PSP (PlayStation Portable) v4.00 Update

332 0

I wanted to give you all a heads up that a new PSP system software update, v4.00, will be released soon, adding Google Internet search directly to the XMB (XrossMediaBar) interface.

This new upgrade replicates the Google Internet search experience, delivering the same search results that you’d get at www.google.com. And with a search history recall of 20 items, Web searches couldn’t be easier.

After you download and install the firmware on your PSP, click on the XMB’s Network icon and then the new Internet Search icon. Enter your keywords and then let Google’s algorithms do the work. You’ll need to be connected to the Internet via a wireless access point or Wi-Fi hotspot. Googling something on the go has never been more convenient on your PSP.

Another new feature delivered through the 4.00 update is the ability to change viewing speed during playback of videos stored on your Memory Stick PRO Duo, so you can speed through or slow down what you’re watching. To do this simply press the up or down directional buttons while playing a video. Enjoy!

Yes you can access the store via remote play but that good to download all the things of the ps3 when you are at the office or far from home and want all ready when you arrive home, that’s one of the features that I love the remote play.

The thisng is that we need the PSP store… even in the past you can download the demos, walls and videos in the psp in the official site of the psp… now you can’t because now the demos is only on the PlayStation store via PC.

Yeah, maybe you will say that it’s better to download it via PC because will be a lot faster… but it’s about commodity and be mobil… that’s why is the PSP, to be portable so I’m not always at home and you know.

Whitout saying that many underage and teen people doesn’t have a PC or their fathers don’t let them to use the PC so it’s better to have all in one place and… this is when PSN cards needs to be out to for those people

  • Where is the ability to access the Playstation Network and your friends list etc on PSP…

    (not via remote play?)

    THis feature may never come…
Becasue of hackers and custom firmwares which will compromise the security of the network…

Yea…blame all yourselves people who support CFW and all the hackers etc…

    :(

  • @201

IMO, it’s probably more of a PSP hardware issue as even the slim version lacks the extra flash space and RAM to run such an app.

    BTW, another question for Eric.

Out of all the things in these systems, why do you guys skimp on RAM when designing your systems?

  • no that cant be all for this update they must be hiding somthing special :)

  • @202

Those aren’t real limitations, you can use the flash memory of the memory stick PRO Duo as a cache for RAM and use the Memory Stick to store the rest of the store app that cannot fit on the flash inside the system.

  • @205

Good point, however flash media typically has a finite number of read/write cycles, thus cache usage would be less than ideal.

  • I wouldn’t want to use the MS as RAM, it would make it really slow

  • @207

    That too. :P

  • sweet update for the PSP. I’ll be using google a lot more on my PSP i thinks! Hopefully 2.4 for PS3 will be right around the corner.

    peace,
    Lh

  • I wonder whats holding it up..

  • @207

Would you rather not have these features, for the sacrifice of speed?

  • SONY HEAR YOUR FANBASE! ALMOST EVERY POST ARE ASKING FOR IGXMB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    IGXMB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    IGXMB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    IGXMB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @212 – Don’t get your hopes up. It’s not coming till after E3.

  • Cause there is probably gonna be a 2.36 first. Let the whining commence!

  • Thats a pretty nice update.

  • It would be nice to receive more video codecs for the PSP and a stand alone PSP Store App. Also, the ability to update firmware utilizing the DC connection. My psp battery is too low to allow for the firmware update even with the power cable plugged.

Also, over the air transfers from the PS3 to PSP would be a great addition as well.

  • Agreed being able to transfer music from my PS3 to PSP with no cables would be nice for on the go

  • @ FreePlay….

    Thats great man….Great comment…

    No seriously….

I know that security will be compromised on the PSP if it has direct access to the PSN…You know thats true…

If the PSP can play games, load web pages, play videos, run skype etc…
It can load a simple PSN app..
So I doubt hardware is the lmiitation..+ the coders at sony will be able to make it run smooth…

Having it running in the b/g during a game is a problem….

  • @ 218
    Agreed
I don’t know if i want to leave my PSP on for a while to download a 500mb+ game

  • @219

Certainly not to download a 500 GB game (though if you lack a PC and a PS3, that’s better than not being able to download at all). But an PSN Store for PSP would be great to download smaller stuff, demos and themes/wallpapers/etc. Not to mention it might legitimize downloadable games for the PSP (since some developers think its a joke right now, and they’re probably right).

  • An Google based Internet Search Icon.. Are you kidding me Sony? Everyone who has a PSP has already bookmarked Google.com under their personal favorites, so are you really doing us a favor by giving us this FW update? What the PSP really needs is more “Remote Play” functionality. It would be nice if we could watch DVD movies using “Remote Play”, but the PS3/PSP doesnt reconize DVD movies while using the “Remote Play” feature. Another feature that would be nice if we could play CURRENT PS3 Games using “Remote Play” because those old PS2, and PS games are horrible, and if I didnt buy them back then, what the hell makes you think I want to buy them now? And both the PS3/PSP need browser updates badly. As of now, “Remote Play” is only good for turning on your PS3 and downloading content while away from home. AND THATS IT!

  • I wish you could watch regular DVDs (I know Bluray would be hard) But why can’t we watch a regular DVD over remote play?
    @ 220
thanks that make more sense and clears stuff up a bit

  • Yea…thats another gripe with me and the psp…

I mainly use my psp for remote play…checking downloads, messaging friends…

Watching and listening to content on my ps3 HDD…

But the ability to NOT watch DVD’s and Blu-Ray discs via RP sucks..

  • You know, in Asian cultures, the number “4” is considered unlucky since it rhymes with the word for “death.” I was hoping the PSP would prove this wrong, but MAN, I could not be anymore underwhelmed than I am right now. Terrible update, and a slap in the face to the remaining PSP fanbase.

    What I’d like:

    – An option to enable the full 333 MHz in PSP games.

Come on… we all know the PSP is underclocked and there’s no way to set it to full speed with official firmware. And we also know that the full 333 uses more battery. Well, many people bought the new PSP Slim and the Extended Life Battery Kit just so they wouldn’t have to worry about battery life anymore. Just create a setting called something like “Enhanced,” add a note about decreased battery life, and stick it somewhere in System Settings.

    – Some sort of PDA function.

Sure, the mylo is still around, but I doubt the people who spent money on a PSP would fork over more money for a mylo. It would be great to take notes with the PSP, even with the current text input setting.

    – USB screen redirect.

Homebrew users already have RemoteJoy, but I’d even pay for a fail-proof screen redirect.

Those three things alone would take me back to official firmware. Things that should have been standard by now, IMO, would be:

    – deeper folder support

    – better playlist support (I don’t want to have to make one in advance on my computer)

    – updated codec & flash support

I’m truly baffled by all the “Great! Google is easier to use!” comments… horrified, even.

  • I’ve never seen so many cry babies in one thread! Its unbelievable how you guys act.

  • I do not understand.

Sony has paid to have the certificate Divx, and also has an agreement to distribute Movies in divx format on the PSN.

PS3 is Divx certified, instead PSP, with 4.00 Firmware still did not support Divx.

    I do not understand.

  • Wow!… just WOW! people…

… and to think, once upon a time I sounded like that… no wait a minute, I don’t think I’ve ever sounded quite like this.
Most of you obviously think you know how to run a leading Video game company better than the people who have been running it at the top of the industry for over 12 years.
I don’t want to be rude guys, because part of me wants to scream and shout with you about certain things I would like to see implemented before a google shortcut… Honestly though, what gives me the right? Besides being able to customize soundtracks in my games with my own mp3’s etc, I knew what I was buying with both my ps3, and my psp… I honestly expected that feature to be there, I was suprised when I found it wasn’t… bottom line is, we(as in you… me… them… whoever) do not have the right to act like spoiled little brats about every little format we want supported, etc.

Seriously guys/gals! just let it go, Sony is doing the best they can, all the time, keep giving your feedback, but why be so rude, reverse psychology only works on kids, Do you guys assume the company is run by a bunch of children? because that’s how you’re treating them.

Want my advice? track down people who have the same firmware interests as you, create a group, sign a petition, or contact consumer services as a group, and do it respectfully, and intelligently, I have no doubt the company is paying full attention to the blog, but I am willing to bet all I have, on the fact that they will pay more mind, to intelligent/respectful feedback.

  • Erm, hang on…

    I don’t want to search using google.com – I want to search using google.co.uk

It is switchable, yes? Because if it isn’t, it would be an embarrassment of neo-colonial proportions.

  • TheApprentice said: “I know that security will be compromised on the PSP if it has direct access to the PSN…You know thats true…”

Except… no. Because it hasn’t happened with the PS3, where we’ve been able to redirect things through a proxy. You have no clue what you’re talking about.

If Sony gave two sh*ts about the things we suggested to them, we wouldn’t complain. Not a single suggested feature has actually made it into the firmware yet. They’re too busy locking out homebrew to care about features.

  • Schitt mann, I was hoping for some type o Youtube player, updated browser compatible with yahoo’s newest homepage, Music ingame/internet,and generaly just make it easier for companies to make simple or complex applications for the PSP other than just games. A daily planer would be a good Idee.

Btw, there is currentl;y a way to play music whilst surfing the net from your front porch of your house.I take no credit for this feature. I listen to the internet radio, switch tabs and click what bookmark I want. Its that simple.XD Enjoy.

    Author:Miguel561

You need Firmware 3.80 or higher to use the Internet Radio.

    1. Go to your internet browser and type this in on the address bar, file:/PSP/SYSTEM/BROWSER/bookmarks.html

    2. Once it shows up, set it as your Home page.

    3. Exit the internet browser and go to Internet Radio an select a player.

    4. Once it start ups and you start hearing the music, switch to another tab and press the triangle button and select “Home” (the icon that looks like a house) and you’re bookmarks will show up.

    5. Click on any of you’re bookmarks.

    6. Now you’re listening to music while surfing the web on your PSP.

  • the Google thing has got to be the most retarded thing ever. It’s not even a new feature. It’s a feature we’ve had since 2.0 just making it more easily accessible which if Google was set as your homepage or a bookmark then it was already easily asseccible. this just makes me like my iPod Touch so much more.

  • Very poor update to justify this all new “V4.00” firmware.

I mean, adding the google search to the XMB its just a shortcut, its almost a bookmark to that browser feature.

Changing video speed, ok :| !

    Sugestions:

-> PSP Browser needs to be redesigned from the scratch due perfomance and compability issues. Why don’t try to implement Firefox Mobile?

-> PSP is a personal gadjet, why don’t implement the Avatar feature like PS3, to automatically use on Go Messenger and multiplayer games?

  • If you search ideas, for new functions, for PSP, look here:
    http://envrac.romandie.com/get/11625/Projet%20PSP%20v2.1.pdf

It’s in French, but there are lots of very good ideas.

  • Please, add the OGG Vorbis and FLAC Codec support.

  • Why I cannot post a hypertext link?

  • First of all, who cares about the PS3 FW2.40 update… This is a PSP BLOG! NOT PS3, besides, we have been anxiously awaiting the 4.00 update for a lot longer than you have had a PS3!

  • The latest PS3 2.35 firmware still has a bug on the 40GB European model that causes the audio to be re-activated on HDMI although it has been set to S/PDIF output only. Shutting down and restarting the PS3 usually solves the glitch. I hope next firmware releases will make the setting stick.

Also, another bug/limitation it’s the fact that USB flash memory sticks above 2GB just don’t work. They aren’t recognized by the PS3 OS. You there at Sony need to update USB drivers. I even had corruption when reading files off of 1GB USB flash memory, they got corrupted during copying. PS3 XMB USB drivers need to be updated and fixed to avoid this kind of issues.

  • You have anxiously awaited 4.00 so you can have Google on the XMB instead of a bookmark in the browser and fast forward and slow down movies? WOW! I have PSP and I have never really been anxious for a Firmware update for it unless it is to enhance the RemotePlay abilities.

FW 2.40 is where it’s at with all these online games coming, the PS3 needs to step it up and add the basic functionality needed for quality online play.

Booooooo on cancelling Eight Day BTW!

  • This is one of the most dispointing update so far.

Once again you bring totally useless features where you can bring very much needed ones, such as:

    -Divx, WMV, etc.
-Ogg, Flac, tec (And gapless audio for all codecs)
-auto or manual thumbnail creation from a video
-Better folder option, and deeper folder creations and organisation.
    -video chat in skype
    -Blu-Ray/DVD play in remote play
-Wireless file transfer with PS3, and also throuh remote play

These are the ones that come in mind.

  • I cant wait to try it out thanks

  • This really should be like 3.98 making it 4.0 usually means a big revision but this just sounds like something to hold us over for a bit are there any major changes to make this change to the major revision number?

  • hmmm…as a FORMER slave( “married man”) , from My tormented past Life ( Parallel Line/ Loop), let Me just tell You that if there’s a 4.00 , there’s a 4.OO. There WILL be a date where NO MORE TECH PROTOTYPES or TECH INTERFACE APPLICATIONS/”DnLodes” will be available from former studios for purchase or free use by the public of “Arcane Arcadium”( Known by Dreamers/ nüübs as the “North America”(?) continental Interstatial/ Midstatial zone). And “Eric Lempel” thinks he has a “golden pillow”? huuh<!

  • How disappointing, I was hoping to watch some YouTube videos on my PSP.

    Oh well.

  • are those all of the new features we are getting

  • @luckyabc, Dude I sure the hell hope not!Man we so deserve more than just a google shortcut and new video speeds!Man, I’ll buy a pandoras battery from a specialty site before I hold my breath for a decent update from sony……

  • so whenz the PS3 update ? :D

  • i guarantee that firmware 2.40 will not be coming out on the 18th.
