PSP (PlayStation Portable) v4.00 Update

332 0

I wanted to give you all a heads up that a new PSP system software update, v4.00, will be released soon, adding Google Internet search directly to the XMB (XrossMediaBar) interface.

This new upgrade replicates the Google Internet search experience, delivering the same search results that you’d get at www.google.com. And with a search history recall of 20 items, Web searches couldn’t be easier.

After you download and install the firmware on your PSP, click on the XMB’s Network icon and then the new Internet Search icon. Enter your keywords and then let Google’s algorithms do the work. You’ll need to be connected to the Internet via a wireless access point or Wi-Fi hotspot. Googling something on the go has never been more convenient on your PSP.

Another new feature delivered through the 4.00 update is the ability to change viewing speed during playback of videos stored on your Memory Stick PRO Duo, so you can speed through or slow down what you’re watching. To do this simply press the up or down directional buttons while playing a video. Enjoy!

  • I also would like to know when is their going to be another PS3 update and if trophie acheievement we see on YooTube is true or Fake.

  • @kedaro

dude c’mon…seriously…the last psp update was april…so in 2 months what the SONY team managed to “develope” for us is a g’damn link to google and place it on the PSP’s XMB…and your going to defend them?????

be realistic…im not jumping down your throat at all so i hope i dont come off that way…i happen to be out of my teen years and into what most would call an adult…and not to mention i have an iPhone so i barely even use my psp anymore after GOW:COO…but ANYONE can look at this update and see the pathetic attempt to blow smoke up the consumers asses.

2 months and all that Eric Lempel can show for himself is a google xmb icon…either he needs to step down like Mr. Harrison or SONY really needs to get someone into Lempel job who knows how to code and PRODUCE. If the SONY team produced what the consumers have been screaming for…would there be a need to complain? or go out and buy other devices like iPhones?? just to get what we want…i gave up on the PSP a long time ago…the iPhone killed it but SONY thinks a google icon is the best thing since sliced bread????…c’mon who’s anyone kidding

  • Could you start being more specific in your PSP firmware updates, by letting us know if this is for Both PSP’s, Regular and Slim, or only for Slims.
    THANK YOU

  • @ 251

Maybe it wont come out tomorrow but how can you guarantee something than no one knows except Sony.. you are pushing a little too far, just be patient and stop assuming things

  • 257 Comments, Some that are good questions/Comments and no replies. I was wondering if there was a certain criteria needed to get a response from the team. It seems that it has yet to be met here along with questions placed on last Thursdays store update.

  • Nice updates!

Although, I have to admit that I expected more out of this release since it is not a 3.xx it’s the full-on 4.00 release. Still, the google function will be a nice addition to the already outstanding list of features.

Changing the speed of the videos should have been on there a long time ago, but at least you worked it in there.

I want to see this added:

During Remote Play I would like to be able to designate the sound source. Currently when I connect to my PS3 all of the sound is transferred to my PSP. When I have a party, I would like to be able to just use the PSP as a control panel for selecting the music and changing the volume, but I still want the sound to come out of my home theatre sound system. I just think it would be a great additional feature that many people would find uses for.

Thanks for the hard work guys!!

  • @ 259

Not sure if your being sarcastic but you can already do that via Remote Play. Just connect then go to the Remote Play setting using the PSP. From there you should see Audio Device Output and you can switch to outputting to the PSP or PS3.

  • Lol, releasing soon…and remour of the ps3’s firmware update being tomorrow, things just keep on making sense.

  • Nice update. Hope to install it this week. I’m looking forward to seeing a better, quicker browser update with a keyboard like Go! Messenger which works way better.

  • Ehm… for what? For Google I can choose google.com as my Home Page in the Internetbrowser. Probably it’s faster too. And who wants to play Videos slower or faster? Okay, if you search for one point in the video, you can eventually use it, but for it there is already slow motion. In my opinion this update will be one of the worst.

  • What about the Yahoo users? I suppose Google is probably paying you all for this update, and the speculation looks like Google and Yahoo may be the same company in not too long.

Is there anything in this update that does anything useful for those of us who don’t watch videos on the memory stick and those of us who spend very little time in the PSP browser? I’d like it if the PSP was able to go and download videos and stuff itself rather than depending on a windows machine for that. Not all of us want to plug our PSPs in to watch videos, it’d be nice to be able to get PSP content without depending on another machine.

  • “You’ll need to be connected to the Internet via a wireless access point or Wi-Fi hotspot” I assume Google from the XMB will automatically attempt to open the internet connection once the search is initiated and open the browser for search results?

“Another new feature delivered through the 4.00 update is the ability to change viewing speed during playback of videos stored on your Memory Stick PRO Duo…” NEW? ummm, not so much. I can already change the viewing speed for video playback. I am assuming that finer control has been added.

If you’re going to be adding these type of secondary features to the PSP, may I suggest wrap around for direction in the text entry. i.e.: when I have highlighted “GHI4” pressing left would take me to “MNO6”

Adding additional functions to the PSP is appreciated, but an improved browser with YouTube (Flash) support really should be a top priority along with an in-device PSN Store.

  • is there any word on the PSP Eye toy coming out in the U.S.?

it would be nice to use the cam icon for something.

  • Well, not really all that impressive, but the PSP is getting to the point where improving won’t be so easy. Thank you for making it such a versatile system! :D

  • this took 2 MONTHS???

could havee done something interesting like more video formats allowed or like a rocket ship coming out of the screen. but no, they put a stupid link to an internet site that most people have in bookmarks anyway!

    I AM NOT HAPPY

  • @259
this feature was added a while ago, in remote play go to the ps3 settings and in sound settings you can change the source from psp to whatever source the ps3 is hooked up to

  • A few more thoughts, after deciding it better not to comment on all that caught my attention.

    TheApprentice

I assume you haven’t kept up with the news, the store’s security was already circumvented and now anyone can download the files from it without paying onto any PSP with custom firmware. People with custom firmware can even download those files straight to their PSP and use them right away, unlike legit customers who either don’t mind pay or even those who prefer to pay if the convenience is there.

Really, the only reason I see stopping Sony is that they are trying to make it secure enough using the PSP’s web browser so that customers won’t start getting their identities stolen via this, since that would probably be the worst thing that could come of it.

    Stoffinator

So how many months have you waited for new features, only to see an advertisement installed in the lastest update? That’s what the Google icon amounts to, and many people are pissed since full numbered updates always had something special in the past and this time there isn’t even a new feature that makes the update worth installing over.

  • this is the big 4.00 update? this took 2 months ? eric lempel this is the best sony could come up? a pathetic google icon when google works fine and everyone already has google bookmarked. thats sad oh and video playback speed thats lame. you could have spent the two months upgrading the psp’s long outdated flash player or atleast added more video support? but u added two useless features. i can see why people go to cfw, because sony cant make any good features. eric lempel i wont “enjoy!” this update.

  • Are you freaking kidding me? Google search? I can already do that very easily on my PSP. Speed up and slow down video playback? Yawn. This sounds like it should be 3.97 or something.

Where’s our on the fly playlisting? How about shuffling and standard playlists that work across subfolders? These are such useful and simple features to implement.

  • I cant believe all this negativity, any update which enhances the product is a good thing, back in the days of ps1 or ps2 we had no updates at all.

  • Google on psp thats good but please also these:
    – gif animation support.
    – photo viewer just like on wii or a editable viewer.
    – Editable menu where i can delete feature or turn off..and move the bar and icons.
    – Video supported but editable background/wallpaper or gif animated wallpaper.
    – Custom sound options at selections of icons in menu of psp.
    – Auto savegame icon when you press it..it will ask insert game and loads game and save at same time
-Better umd video menu where i can select chapters including previews shots
    – Editable photo/gif/video screensaver
    – Finally just like Nintendo DS PSP hotspot wifi where we can download free demos of games…and expand that to major cities arround the world!!Not just UK.

now then i would consider my psp to be the ultimate handheld console ever!

  • uhhh ok…because just loading the browser and going to google.com is really all that hard? whats with this lame ass update??? i hope this isn’t the ‘best’ feature 4.00 has to offer.

  • again WHEN is this update coming……if you say soon , that can be any time from now to next month….. so come on… today, tomorrow, next week… what

  • @ freeplay…

Has the ps3 firmware Been hacked???
Is there ps3 custom firmware been released???

No… Security is fine on ps3…

Security on PSP has already been compromised so releasing the feature now is risky as hackers can manipulate it the way they want….

Why do u not understand this???

  • 276 posts and not a single reply from Eric Lempel about any of the questions that have been asked, i think he might have just posted this and not bothering to come back and have a look lol also with all the “roumers” going about with 2.4 you would think “sony” would at least put something up in their blog about it. But heay this is sony we are talking about and they can’t say anything incase they have to “delay” it lol

  • @Everyone interested in the PS3 2.40 update.

Custom Soundtracks & trophies require a patch with older games. That goes for all older PS3 games. So of you know this. Custom Soundtracks will not magically work with all PS3 games, it requires patching. Games from here on out may use them more often.

  • I hope that the new icon will be theme-customizable… Or at least distinct in its own right, unlike the LocationFree or Skype icons.

I REALLY wouldn’t mind a few more features, though… maybe the additional video playback features will be nice.

  • Firmware 2.40!!!! Please!!!!!

  • 4.0 M33?

  • 281 comments and no little red posts…maybe it’s because out of all these comments there are a ton to wade through that are not about this topic. If you want to talk about something off topic take it to the forums, where you can create your own topic and let us read comments which actually pertain to THIS post, Thanks:)

Ok well, I actualy read only about 160 posts but I didn’t see anyone asking for this yet.
Is it possible to make something for the PSP to make it always online? Something like one of those cards that cell phone companies have for your laptop?

I do have to agree with those who said please improve the browser. I want YouTube and MySpace. Without hacking my PSP.

Also more PSOne games. I like having more choices bcause I have games stored on my memory stick. Less to carry:)

People are complaining about the lack of releases for the PSP, well I agree. Maybe it’s because the 3rd party developers are wondering how many PSP owners are going to buy their games as opposed to downloading them.

  • Why the hell would anyone want to watch dvd’s over remote play?! If you’re using the local wireless remoteplay, you might as well be sitting in front of your tv watching the dvd since you’re within 30ft of your ps3 anyway. If you’re using remoteplay over the internet, do you know how horrible it would look? First you would need an incredibly fast internet connection at both locations. Second, 802.11b isn’t even capable of producing 11Mbps bit rate after you factor in the error correction and encryption algorithms. The result would be crappy, choppy video. The only solution would be for the ps3 to ENCODE the dvd video into some sort of compressed streaming format designed for internet video IN REAL TIME. Just imagine how long it would take them to get that programmed.

    DO NOT WANT!!!

I’d rather the folks at sony focus on making the psp a good gaming machine instead of some sort of game/media frankenstein where neither feature works well.

  • gertje
I like the idea of giving us more control over the XMB, I would love to get rid of the camera icon as I will likely never use it (unless Sony releases a PSP with an integrated camera like I’ve dreamed of) and other icons are useless for me too. Seems to me like you’ve got some good ideas, though you can view animated gif icons via the web browser as I understand.

  • LOL…for all you guyz waiting for Mr. Eric Lempel to answer a single question or reply to a single post…take a look back at all the meaningless posts that Eric has posted….he puts these posts up and walks away…he wants absolutely NOTHING to do with having to answer anything or clarify anything

so before you go and start begging for answers or want something clarified you must first understand the person your dealing with!!!

unlike Noel Silvia who takes a bullet for the team and comes on to reply to posts that he didnt even post or try to answer questions even though it puts him in the line of fire…Mr Lempel is just as good at blog replies as he is at his own job…GFS!!!!

    GFS = Good For S__T

  • Nice Updates ^^, But……………

When are we gonna have 2.40 for our PS3’s =]

  • Its nice that you guys are updating the psp but seriously can you make an announcement about 2.4 im tired of reading stupid rumors and anti sony things its gettin pretty annoying even if its not really coming out just to clear things up it is very frustrating that we have to read on and on about something that should have been included when the system was first released

  • Hmm, I’m not that impressed if the in-XMB Google search is the only major feature. Ok it’s a nice feature, but it’s not that inconvenient to use the browser for Google. What would be a great feature is the ability to play YOUTUBE videos directly from the XMB. Please Sony, work on this because it’s going to make PSP one hot device. There are some homebrew apps for it, but they aren’t official and don’t work that well. Also, PLEASE add DIVX support. Most videos nowadays now use DIVX, PSP needs to keep up! These are the features that I’d love to see and I’m sure millions of PSP owners do too.

  • This is so crap. i’m pretty sure the internet browser can already get to google :/
and i think watching films at normal speed is good enough for me thanks.
why not give us something useful?
some better visualizations, a pdf reader, a picture viewer that plays gif images, infra-red connectivity to non-PSP devices(phones), playback of flash video, etc.

  • mm well i already have google as my home page so as soon as i go to the internet its already there so im not gona be using that…
and yea i really wanna see my fat friend jumping up and down in slow mottion so ima really use that feature =]

  • @278

360 lets you play your own music over pretty much any game. It just plays over the games sound. This would not require a patch of the game, just a firmware update.

  • @292
First, this is a playstation blog, not a 360 blog. Second, the 360 has always had custom soundtracks as part of its development platform, so of course there wouldn’t be any patches needed for 360 games. This is going to be an entirely new feature that ps3 developers had no knowledge about when the first games came out. Yes, it does take a bit of foreknowledge to make it possible to completely turn off one aspect of a game’s audio while keeping another aspect of the audio playing regularly. Thus a patch is needed. And third, a firmware update isn’t even necessary since games like Stardust HD and the bowling game already have this feature. The reason every 360 game has this feature is because MS doesn’t give developers the option.

  • @293
I was simply doing a very basic comparison. I’ll admit, I do not know everything. But I’d imagine, it would not be that hard to figure out. And yes I do realize some games already come with custom soundtracks.

  • Firmware 4.00 is now available for download over WiFi.

  • crystalx3d

As it is clear few games have such a feature, having a firmware update where it layers the audio (which requires no forethought of the developers as it would simply layer over existing audio if used and the developers did not provide provisions) would clearly be very beneficial as that is a main feature the xbox360 has and as they are competition then it seems clear removing such an advantage is ideal.

Back to the original reason I came to comment.

While listening to my music and looking through some photos I noticed I had no way to quickly pause the music, and thought it would have been nice if I could have used the remote for that or at least had a way to access the music menu without having to hop over to the song and then pause it from there. I think it would nicely mesh with the portable feel as well as help with pause a presentation, should you do one with a Slim.

  • cool, but are those all of the features???And when does it release???

  • The update must be out… I can’t get it. :( My PSP is lagging at the update screen.

  • Ok, a quick restart and I am back in bizness!

  • What can I say … oh yes, I know : thanks Sony to officially unveil that the PSP is dead. Really, thanks !

  • Oh, BTW, 4.00 is out, and these are the ONLY NEW FEATURES.
