A new PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles. We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB” access in-game. The update will also include “trophies,” an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements. We’ve talked about some of this on the blog previously and know that many of you can’t wait to get your hands on these features. You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly.

as far as I know, you can log into your PSN account from any PS3 as long as you have the password. You’d just have to create a seperate user account on your PS3 for each of your buddies.

I don’t work for Sony so I obviously can’t be sure, but I can’t imagine Sony doing it any other way. (like, what would happen then if you had to repair/exchange your PS3 or something?) So I wouldn’t worry about that if I were you. ;)

This is driving me absolutely CRAZY!! I keep checking this blog and sifting through the internet just hoping for some kind of confirmation of the release…
I dont get it at all….Why does Sony ALWAYS leave its loyal customers in the dark?? giving me an ulcer jeezus!! All they have to say is it will be released this month…or next month or whenever but JUST SOMETHING!!! it would make everyone happy I dont get why they have to leave us hanging and tease us with this pretty useless 2.36 update….JUST TELL US SOMETHING ANYTHING, or I just might stop forking my cash over to you guys.

I mean, sometimes I’d rather download the update on my computer because it downloads about three times faster than the PS3, but they don’t update the site for almost a day sometimes. Hopefully 2.4 comes soon though. So I’ll be able to tell my friends that are playing COD4 to join me and play Metal Gear Online without leaving the game :)
Seriously though, update the site much faster. If I can download it through the PS3, then it should also be available via PC simultaneously.

Would it be possible to implement a system where you link your PSblog account to your PSN account? I don’t mean give it away, (I’d prefer not to display my PSN id for the world to see…) but just a little something to show whether the person who’s posting actually owns a PS3 or not. It would be very nice to see if the people making all the doom and gloom/trolling/complaining/bashing comments actually own a PS3 or not. Just an idea…

OK, well since I installed the update, I can only stream my pictures and video from my Vista PC and not my MP3s. What the hell happened? Streaming music is one of the most important functions of this machine, since it essentially replaced most of my home entertainment equipment.
Any information about this problem, who else has it and if others do, if some sort of solution is out there would be appreciated.

The 40gb ps3 will never have ps2 backwards compatibility. This is because it has neither the ps2 “emotion engine” cpu nor the “graphics synthesizer” gpu. That’s why sony can afford to sell it for 399. The 80gb can emulate the cpu but still contains the gpu. Even the mighty CELL isn’t powerful enough to emulate both chips at the same time and still maintain a good experience. Regular psOne games are simple enough that they can be completely emulated. SO STOP ASKING FOR 40gb BACK COMPATIBILITY!

well my ps3 cant play ps1 games either….its the 40gb version so if it is indeed capable I would like to know how to accomplish this…
the 80gb version has an extra gpu? interesting…It still doesnt make sense that the ps3 can run these intense games that it does but cant play an old ps2 game…should be easy for it…I dont know [DELETED] about how it really works though.
I have a question…that little door that opens up on some ps3’s (not mine) is that a feature of the 60gb and 80gb ones?

You cant register two psn id’s on one ps3..
this is because each account costs sony money to maintain on their servers…they manage this by always keeping enough server space to accomidate every ps3 that has been sold….if you have multiple account on each ps3 then it would bog down the servers storing all your psn info, and would probably cause sony to charge for psn…
that is my theory anyway.
Wow, this sounds awesome. I recently purchased a ps3 (mgs4!) and its great. The only thing that really bugged me (apart from having to create a different ID for MGO instead of using my PSN ID) is that when u pressed the home button, there wasn’t a clock displayed (unlike the psp)… Its something very simple, yet it would be nice to know the time at the simple press of a button, instead of getting up to check the time (especially for those late night game sessions) Hopefully this update fixes this….

Great to hear Sony come forward and state officially that it’s coming.
I really hope that in game XMB does allow us access to all the XMB’s features and not just to our friends list. I really would love to be able to access the internet browser to get a little help when I’m stuck in games without the need to exit the game and then load it back up.
Quick suggestion: Could you guys possibly update the PS3’s flash player? And increase the limit of friends on the PSN from the current 50. Plus recording gameplay. You guys talked about this at the launch in North America. It’s coming right? The youtube link is the hidden surprise that no one is talking about.
I’m not so sure if there’ll be access to our MP3s though since games are still touting that they’ll have custom soundtracks. However, all should be revealed shortly. I’m hoping for news in the next couple of weeks with a release around E3 time.

GIFs i dont understand why the ps3 cant read GIFs. or whut about a multiple delete option. thats some thing i think should be fixed. they get to that soon i think. i jus feel we as in playstation users should leave a mature comment and not a [DELETED] one. lets all ask in a respectful way. cuz they give us respect by listening…

@redfox: install tversity (free)then use your wireless router to stream photos music and movies to your ps3. whats cool is that if you have a psp and a ps3 you can connect both! imagine watching movies or tv shows in the bathroom! If you want a step by step, my psn id is evilmonkey501 :)

oh and since 2.36 my gta freezes all the time with it resetting my controller to port two? FTW about that one. can you help me out. sorry to double post but thats it B’y. I’m sick of it already, every time I go to multiplayer mode in gta4 and try to get my headset working it flips my DS3 to port 2. HELP HELP! It’s driving me nuts.

The reason the PS3 can’t play PS2 games without having PS2 hardware included is because the PS2’s graphics card includes 4MiB of embedded DRAM. While the PS3’s RAM by itself is more than fast enough to compensate, it does not have embedded video RAM comparable to the PS2’s card. This creates a RAM bandwidth problem that currently cannot be surmounted with software emulation and may never be surmounted. (Though I’m sure millions of PS3 owners are holding their breath, hoping…) However, as far as I know, all PS games should play on all PS3 models with no problem as even the PS2 could handle software emulation for that.

@551. I was thinking more along the lines of the ability to have my friends logged in on thier PSN ID and mine on My PSN ID at the same time. Instead of when we play multiplayer games locally (example Warhawk) they have to share my PSN ID Axeblade07(1), Axeblade07(02) ect… and same thing when I’m at thier house. If we play together on 1 machine I loggin as thier PSN ID with a (1) or whatever next to it.

Congradulation Sony. Didn’t have alot of positive things to say a couple of weeks ago. However, I am glad that you guys are starting to turn the corner. Still think there is no excuse when it come to PS1 game coming out in Japan. However, what ever’s really going on, I hope you guy resolve it and bring those ps1 game to the US. Good luck to you Eric. i sided with the british dudes. the other team was worse than a sukboxpleasefixme.
After this I hope we get a upnp server, fixed video playback(keep getting errors in the middle of watching videos) and the ability to create a new icon for the psn option on the xmb. It makes most themes look out of place.
The most important thing there would be video playback, having it crash allot is very annoying and makes it impossible to watch a video from start to finish without interruption.
Things are looking up, great work.
One thing that might be a good idea is to launch a similar site to the dell brainstorm site to get feature requests and bug reports from users syndicated.
This would also reduce the amount of off topic posts on the blog and give sony an idea of what features are actually the most wanted.
Dont launch this before 2.40 though if you dont want to have to plow through the duplicate in game xmb posts :D :P lol
ps, before anybody mentions it. These are mpeg files I am talking about which are supposedly compatible with the ps3 and I dont want to waste power,time and memory transcoding the videos to the ps3.
