A new PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles. We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB” access in-game. The update will also include “trophies,” an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements. We’ve talked about some of this on the blog previously and know that many of you can’t wait to get your hands on these features. You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly.

  • this is fine example of how to say nothing and still get people excited. We already know about the existence of in-game XMB and of trophies thanks to news from OTHER sites. So what you have here is a post acknowledging that and nothing more.

Without a time frame this means nothing.

How excited will you be if this update cycle goes …

    2.36 this week
    wait a month
    2.37
    wait a month
    2.38
    wait a month
    2.39
wait a month (coincidentally sales season begins!)
    2.40

Not so exciting when it might look like that.

  • “You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly.”

    I wish they would already.

  • ^well said

  • You have got to be kidding me. Before 2.40 Everyone was complaining about “WHERES IN GAME XMB” or Why They cant have it or when will it come. Now that everyone authenticates that IN GAME XMB is arriving, I see comments on ” NOW WHERES HOME?” or “Whens Home coming now?”.. I guess we have a pact of ungrateful little orphans. Public Demand never ceases to amaze the Deterance from the rest of us. Geez.

  • Still looking forward to it. Makes me wonder what people will [DELETED] about next.

  • DevilHunterDante

I Feel the same way Qberty

  • Thank You! Bring on 2.4.

  • my guess is 2.40 on june 26th or the week before or after e3

  • @ qberty

unless you live in the future this is still “before 2.40.”

As you should know by now a Sony announcement means almost nothing these days. When 2.40 arrives then you can believe it.

Like we would be still be planning on playing The Getaway 3, 8 Days and possibly Heavenly Sword 2, but those titles are all cancelled now.

  • 2.36 is up :)

  • Indeed DHD. The Amount of comments that Flood this blog about things people wanted should seriously be filtered out. Ok. Your opinion will be Monitored. But atleast make your Opinion Plausible From both sides as a consumer and employee.

  • What is the need for 2.36, why can’t you just do the little [DELETED] you would do with 2.36 and combine it with 2.40???

This either means we’ll have two firmware updates really close together, or that 2.40 is even farther away than we think

  • I need in-game XMB.

  • If you go about asking for things in a polite manner you usually get a nice answer as well.

So to all the rude commenters, maybe if you chill a little and just take things as they come life will prove to be less of a disappointment :)

    People usually respond in kind.

  • can’t wait for 2.40

  • ahh.. Late reference to my comments. Yea.. i usually get that alot. Cold bloody Truth is what people hate the most.

  • Great news!!!!!!

  • Fuge man why cant you just release 2.40 with the system stability whats so hard about that? >:O

W/e thanks Eric finaly there is confirmation.

  • 2.36 is out!!! installed it 2 mins ago! bring on 2.40

  • Woot! at long last!! :D

  • Finally in game xmb.

  • Installing 2.36 now. Launching soon means something totally different to Sony. I imagined it meaning within the next few days but hours later is nuts. I wonder when we could expect 2.40

  • ya 2.36 is up and for the psp 4.00 is out so all in all a good day

  • psh soon…
I hate when Sony says soon…
It always bites us in the butt (ex. Ps3, home, mgs4, and updates)

  • Could we get some details about FW 2.40? Specifically regarding the rumor that in-game XMB requires constant devotion from one of the Cell’s SPE’s, leaving only 6 SPE’s available to game developers? Could someone please confirm this or disprove this?

  • xero_cool_miguel

The update has been release YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @322 If you didn’t hear it from here that means it’s probably just some fanboys hatin on the PS3 because their demise is coming.

Once 2.40 comes out the “other” fanboys are just paying for…/shrug

  • This is all we wanted Sony!
    THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
    Just a little official word!!!!
Eric Lempel YOUR OFFICIALLY MY HERO!!!!
    EVERYONE AT SONY GREAT WORK!!!!
    WE LOVE YOU ALL!!!!

I DON’T KNOW IF I CAN SLEEP TONIGHT NOW!!!!

    MGS 4 WHAT?

    2.40 YEAH BABY!

JUNE 17TH IS THE SECOND HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE!!

THE FIRST WILL BE THE RELEASE OF 2.40!!

    AWESOME!!!!

  • For all those people who can’t wait for 2.40 I have this to say, put yourself in the place of an early adopter in 2006 who didn’t even have background downloading in the PS Store. Sony hears our complaints and have officially confirmed a step in the right direction with in-game XMB, and even if it isn’t the entire XMB functions, it is good that they are at least paying attention and their engineers have been working to give us what we want. I can’t tell you how many things they have improved since November 2006. The big ones to me were upscaling PS1/PS2 games, movies and network media streaming. Yes, can you believe we didn’t have those before. Good things have been coming and more will come.

  • Booya! This is definitely good news! Thanks much! :D

  • I think so far the biggest features were:

    New PS STORE
    Background Downloading
    Themes
    Remote play via psp
    and the PSN icon

Everything else is useless, IN GAME XMB is what everyone is waiting for and hopefully shortly means tomorrow.

  • I keep getting a download error after about 30%. Been looking on the website to download to card and update on the PS3 but cannot find any link other than 2.35 or a non working link saying 2.36 coming soon. Anyone else having this issue?

  • I somewhat Feel for sony as demands are selfishly being placed all around. People DO need to remember that THEY bought the PS3 Knowing What It was MADE to do. Meaning you Paid for the Features You Got. At PS3 Launch Nothing else was intentionally Promised to quickly. Extranious comments here and there. get a grip. By the way SONY, Your Hawt.

  • @326 considering the 360 had in-game messaging and custom soundtracks out of the box the fact that the PS3 shipped without such a basic feature doesn’t give Sony any props for working on it now. Like many things it shipped without some basic features that should have been there from the beginning. It wasn’t top secret, all they had to do was look at how 360 users use their console. It was there staring back at them. This step in the right direction is still a mile behind the guy walking in front.

I was on the early adopter ride and while it was exciting at the beginning getting new features every other month the fact that they have left an essential component until this late in the game is pretty ridiculous. Nobody needed Profile 2.0 support before XMB. There is only one retail player that supports it as it is and barely a handful of blu-ray discs.

As a PS3 owner I want the gaming features of the console prioritizing. Get those done then start work on Blu-Ray features and Earth music visualizers.

  • This is why I am so happy with my PS3. I love gaming and I love blu-ray movies and for both, Sony has kept us updated with the latest, delivering every time. The DTS Master audio update was a dream for me, what quality movie soundtracks, and now XMB, previously great upscaling to 1080p, Sony you are the best! My PS3 was worth every penny and then much more!!!!

If you could update for all ps3’s to play all ps2 games, we could get rid of our ps2’s, too many machines to hook and unhook. I have the 60gb ps3 so I can play both but many friends are switching between machines and it’s kind of a hassle. I think it would be a great way for people to let go of their ps2’s and enter the PS3 world too.

  • @322 I just remembered by the way that one SPE was always used for the PS3’s Operating System so In-game XMB won’t change that. It’s just fanboy talk like I mentioned before.

  • After all the people complained about this update not getting announced in the blog on the PSP’s latest firmware, I’m glad this finally came.

  • I agree with you .

  • Great that we’ll finally have ingame XMB… though if the trophies are some kind of public “gamer status” thing, I can do without that! Too much like “other” console services.

  • @331 To suddenly change something within a year’s release might have been a risky move and I imagine Sony wanted to test the waters before actually putting resources into it.

Btw that’s not really a basic feature at all, basic is “It plays disks and has sound”, I believe it’s more advanced.

Also for the cheap shot =P You can’t watch 360 users cause their systems spends so much time getting repaired they never get to play it. (Overexaggerated but you get where I was going.) Constant updates are great though, imagine waiting for a new update once every season (if that’s what it is) and being unsure as to what you’re getting. Sony is listening to it’s customers and acting on it except when they did the Blu-ray 2.0 profile. In that case they were trying to win a format war which greatly helped them I believe and will in the future.

  • Firmware 2.36 is now available for download… :)

  • ver2.36 is available right now. I’m downloading it as we I type this. Which means ver2.40 must be right around the corner.

  • one last comment c’mon
    i want in-game xmb

  • 1) Is there any work on a means to update the PSP via the PS3? My wireless router is a giant piece of crap and it took a good 30 minutes to download a 25Mb file when the PS3 downloaded and updated in like 4 minutes. A way to connect directly to the PS3 to update the PSP would be awesome.

    2) I’m tired of being told I can’t update my PSP’s firmware because it doesn’t like the battery level. When it’s plugged using the charger that should not be a concern, can this be resolved so I don’t have to wait another hour – after the 30 minutes wait described above – to then install the firmware?

    3) Will there be a video of v2.40 in action along with PSP 4.00 like we’ve seen for previous updates?

  • I am glad, because I tire of reading “Where is XMB?” in the blog comments. Lets see what the next complaint is going to be.

  • Awesome, however it never says that 2.40 is after 2.36. It just states there will be more details on 2.40 soon.

  • FINALLY!!IN-GAME XMB COMING AND CONFIRMED BY SONY THEMSELF!! YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

I was so pissed last week when xbox 360 was getting most of the rpg’s but with in-game xmb coming soon. It’s kinda worthless to get a xbox 360 now!!I OWN THE BEST CONSOLE ON THE PLANET!!!I’M GLAD THAT I’VE MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE OF PICKING THE PS3!!

What do we want : In-game xmb

When do we wanted : NOW!

Since it’s coming soon,is it worth it to get the other consoles with those kind of features: HELL NO!!

Which console system is no1 : PLAYSTATION 3!

    Which console will win the console wars : Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,Playstation 3!,

    THANK YOU SONY!!!

  • frightfulactions

This official statement is very reassuring indeed. We’ve been hearing nothing but in-game XMB demands from the beginning. Funny, since I really dont care, though it will be nice to finally play games to my favorite playlists, rather than in-game music. Other than that, I have no use for it. Im glad to hear that its finally coming out soon though, but this 2.36 seems pointless to me. Mainly since I’ve never had any problem with game stability, nor do I play any ps1-ps2 games on m PS3, so this update means squat to me. Up till now, the only update I really loved was the custom theme creator. Heres hoping we’re not suprised with 2.37 through 2.39 before we finally get 2.40.
    Sony FTW!

  • Thanks alot for the update.

I hope we won’t have to wait a month to get it. You said 3.6 was soon, and it was here about three hours after I read this blog.

  • @344 I’m guessing your a cheerleader :D
