New Burnout Paradise updates coming to PS3

185 0

Hi there! It’s great that Criterion Games has made it to the PlayStation.Blog, so with this first post it’s best that we bring everyone up-to-date with what’s been happening since Burnout Paradise was released at the end of January.

The truth is – we simply haven’t stopped.

Hunter Olympus

We’re into our “Year of Paradise” – 12 months where the Burnout Team keeps on developing exciting new stuff to expand and change Burnout Paradise (and in the process, we aim to radically change what everyone expects of downloadable content).

We’ve so far released our 1.1 update, and our second update, codenamed: “Bogart,” packed with fixes and game-enhancing features.

Now, we’re expecting our third FREE update codenamed: “Cagney” that’s coming on 10th July (yes, that’s FREE – just put your Burnout Paradise disk into your PLAYSTATION 3 and it’ll download automatically), and we’re really excited about it as we count down to its release.

We’re talking:

3 new Online Game Modes

  • Online Stunt Run – you and up to 7 others compete for the highest stunt score
  • Online Road Rage – where you team up and try to stop the other team from reaching their destination
  • Online Marked Man – someone gets called out and everyone else tries to hunt them down

70 new Online Timed Challenges

  • Everyone teams up to pull off stunts and other feats in the world, against the clock

New Vehicles (including the Hunter Olympus)

Major improvements to our Ranked Racing system

Plus heaps more, including:

  • 1080i support for PlayStation 3 owners with “almost HD” sets
  • Improved Standard Definition rendering for PlayStation 3
  • Support for Custom Soundtracks on PlayStation 3

Hunter Olympus

Outside of the game, our website, www.criteriongames.com is changing too – we’re posting up to 4 stories daily direct from the team and we now have an audio and video podcast from the team that goes out on a weekly basis. This week’s podcast released on Friday, we’re talking in detail about what to expect in “Cagney” and the other game-changing updates beyond that.

The pace of change here at Criterion is breathtaking, so we’re going to be posting here on the PlayStation.Blog at least once a week to let you know more about what’s happening and what’s coming to Paradise City.

    MS Patent

  • Is the 360 also getting the update with ‘Support for Custom Soundtracks’? If so, we can assume in-game xmb has music. but if not then…….

  • @saunderswan, that url points to an application. It has not been accepted as of yet, notice the patent hasn’t been issued yet. At least thats how I think google patents works. If they were accepted there would be an issue date. So its probably one of those patents which Microsoft tried to get which made the patent office burst into laughter :D :P
lol, let me know if I have it wrong.

  • @ ED

I never said it was etched in stone. In fact I said I didn’t know, but I thought that was the way it would go down. I wasn’t aware it was deleted too so you’re playing the villain very well to the admins.

I haven’t been out of line 1 time in this post or since the night of the late up date and I think the admins here would agree to that.

This isn’t about us or how much you dislike me or whatever grudge you have. This is about burnout and if we can’t keep it on that then we don’t need to post here.

On topic: I’m enjoying the game somewhat. Still missing the driver in the car, though. I agree that to have one might’ve been a bit disturbing, though. I also agree Motorstorm didn’t look malicious or inappropriate.

Maybe we can get crash test dummies in the next patch, heh?

  • I keep trying not to buy this game… I just bought GRiD and have GT5 with a Logitech G25 steering wheel but these updates will end up making me buy it. My friend just bought it too so that doesn’t help me to resist it. Please stop patching this game. My wallet can’t take it! ;)

I have read the reviews buy I can’t get a good feeling for how big the play area is. Is the demo a good idea of the size? My favorite racing game right now is actually GTAIV because of the immense size of the driving area, not being restricted to the race pathways, being able to get out of the car and jack another during a race in case of too much damage or car exploding, and if I am near last place I can get points by taking some of the other players out and potentially win even though I come in last. Racing games that I have played in the past have never had a balancing feature like that.

  • To those inquiring about this new custom soundtrack feature and 2.40: Custom soundtracks have already been possible for PS3 for quite some time. Sony has made “the code” or whatever available to developers for a long time now, and (I believe) are keeping it an optional game feature so as to give the developers free choice.

I would prefer it this way, as I would rather music REPLACE the game music, rather than play on top of the game sound externally. Bowling and SSDHD do a wonderful job with the soundtrack functionality and I hope that more developers take notice to that feature and either patch their games or incorporate it from the start. I love me some game soundtracks, but sometimes you just gotta jam some Meshuggah while you raid a bandit camp in Oblivion! :D

  • Burnout Team Rocks! I’m looking forward to this update and future ones as well. This is my personal “Game of the Year” so far, and with all of the new added content coming from Criterion, it’ll surely remain in the running for the rest of the year as well.

xStatiCa (#157), I’d estimate that the demo gives you about 1/6 of Paradise City to roam around in. The city is moderately sized…not HUGE, but big enough that you’ll be exploring it for a good long while. Also, the demo has locked out a lot of features, and doesn’t really give a great impression of the variety of things you can do in this game. I wasn’t terribly thrilled with the demo for that reason, but the full game was excellent.

  • Burnout Paradise is the most fun I’ve had with the Playstation 3 thus far. Incredible game, and it’s completely awesome that Criterion is providing us with free content updates. Thanks a lot you guys!

  • wow this is great news… i’ve already done all 350 , and i want more things to do in the game… at least we get something.

  • This game is AWESOME and keeps getting better!

    Thanks!

  • @159/Jersey-Gamer: Hmm, I’ve been holding off on buying Burnout because the demo didn’t have a whole lot.

I’m not into online with racing games, so do you think Burnout has plenty (as in $60 worth) of stuff to do for a single-player gamer like myself?

  • @163
Here in Canada, Burnout’s been dropped to a $40 game at most retailers.
From what I understand, it’s got a lot of content to it… but I still haven’t picked it up – mostly due to lack of local co-op, but another reason is that the behind-car view really bugged me in the demo. It makes me feel like there’s this huge blind-spot (nit-picky, I know – but it’s my $40).

  • how do you turn on the podcast in Paradise? i’ve always wanted to know.

  • Need 1080i for RESISTANCE 2 and MOTORSTORM 2!

Call it whatever the heck you want, just give us more 1080i support.

    -Pie

  • @StupidityTries, the game is totally worth $70, so you should buy it for $40, no questions asked if you like car racing and crashing at all. Just jump into an online mode and start practicing challenges with strangers or something, its a lot of fun. Expect to be dominated in online races for a while though :)

PS, online road rage mode is going to be awesome!

PPS, damn, gamesblow agreed with me, the world is ending. :-)

  • Sweet.

  • June 10th… could trophy support be added, hm…? ;)

  • Good question Dewmandew7

  • Custom soundtracks, yay!

  • wow lot of excited burnout fans hmm well if they get the 1081 rez & the customized soundtracks plus the bikes & night & island expansions then I definitely will rent it again & possible even buy it but it would have to be as close to an online version o a ps3 Road Rash as u can get & if u did all that then yea it’d be the bomb but then even I hope u don’t stop there,. ZIts weird like several of my burnout friends are still playin it while IO sit here bored wuth GTA so whenever these updates come out man I’m probly gonna ship GTA back to gamespot & get back into cuz like it was just ya know I did a little online GTA but it seems kinda dumb especially just killing & driving & if u want i mean Burnouts definitely the best uh especia;ly man if its in clear high def like 1080 ya know & if they could just shrink that damn um the uh um online uh display screens um like not the map but the other list its too big ya know its distracting & takes up too much of the screen thats really my only complaint ya & the low def so hope u fix all that Criterion & hopefully more ppl will come nback to play bcuz man when GTA came out Burnout just got ded fast like I couldnt even find like any uh any um quick like online grpoup plays & 4get about um gettin anybody to uh join my um customized races or I couldnt even um get peeople to like jojin um a like stunt i mean um challenges dealy that I was controlling & that sucked bcuz I never like got to finish um many uh challenges with like more than 4 players & then when I’d get into a sum1 elses they would just f around like oh they didnt care or they had finished all their challenges so its kinda lame man for people who started late or only recently got online & then nobody is there to like help them finish challenges cuz their all done already i guess. But idk maybe u xcan um figure some way to like connect people with less completed challenges who actually like wanna try and complete the sh*t u know cuz it sux not bein able to get all the cars & crap & then some showoffs got 100% & he bloews your doors off & i want PCd special im sick of the lame ass um walmart bcuz i like f1s cuz they r fast as hell but then theres like a carbon um stinger or sumthin? Poly08 has it i think & it may actually be faster or at least um more consistentlyt fast than an f1 anyway thats my rant ok nut its good to see like a game company actually like follow thru with some new content & improvements & stuff before just going on to Burnout 4 u know? So good liuck & keep up the good work Criterion apparently u guys are this gens new EA cuz this gen EA has kinda blown it by droppin the ball repeatedly. So ya Road Rash thats my final 2 cents worth of 2 words Road Rash 4ever

you mean the like outside overhead cam view of the car cuz u can totally um get like a 1st person not even see the car you’re in view that I usually use that cuz ya it looks better & for me its easier to drive andsteer that way so if that’s wut u mean u shouldn’t let that view u saw stop u from playin cuz there are other views.

  • i 4get how u change the view its like select button or sumthin?

  • Wow it’s really great to see the developers still lovin this game bcuz honestly I’ve played likeDrake & assassin & heav sword & of all the PS3 games I had more fun on Burnout than any of em so hopefully there are still enough players left to experience this & it’s really great u guys are doin all these upgrades man for free & thats way cool so props to Criterion u guys made a rockin game keep on rockin

  • If this is definitely dropping on the 10 then GTA4 is goin in my gamefly mailer today so I can drive to my own music thats like awesome thank god cuz GnR was so played out even though I kinda miss hearin it at startup the rest of the music was em how to put it nicely whacked? hehe but ya 1080i & custom music & all this other stuff it’s definitely time to get back to Burnin Out

  • well thanks to Burnout & Criterion the 2.4 update wasn’t a total overhyped waste of time after all

  • Can anyone plz explain what is this meaning of trophies???

  • From what i understand reading their statement here and on the criterion site, we will NOT be getting trophy support in the cagney update on july the 10th.

It will be in a future update, this is not a digg at criterion, but just so blog users dont get annoyed when they dont get trophy support on july 10th.

Thank you criterion for adding this support. Cant wait for the update when you do add it, when will the update with the trophy support come?

  • My friend says that u will unlock a new area in paradise in a future update, is this true?

  • yes that will be in a future update, go to the criterion website and look at what each update we will get do. doesnt have a release date for eastwood update etc tho

  • Love the game, play it daily. Cant wait for the new updates. More dev teams should set back and take notes from criterion. Any chances of 1080p support in the future?

  • Well its good to finaly have a game with custom soundtracks. Can’t wait!

  • um note this is the first ps3 disk game to have custom sound track avaliable

psp: gta liberty stories, gta vice city stories…

    wii: excite truck

(im sure theres more but idk them

(oh in about 12 hours burnout paradise)

  • omg 360 held back again (lol) projected date about end of july… 360 sucks soooo bad hahaha….

  • The hassle of Custom Soundtracks. Since Sony did the XMB access & in-game music the way they did with 2.4, instead of playing BurnOut I am spending the next few days copying my 10,000 song AAC music library 1 GB at a time from my PS3 to my Walkman then transferring them to my PC then Converting them with Itunes from AAC 64bit to MP3 64 bit which takes about 3 hours per 500 files then I must retransfer them all back to PS3 from PC using TVersity which will probably take another hour per 500 files so maybe by the end of the week I’ll finally have customized soundtracks in BurnOut because for some reason although SuperstardustHD’s customized soundtracks plays AAC just fine apparently Criterion decided everyone should just use MP3s which also have worse sound quality than AAC at the same bitrate so I have to give up sound quality or leave a lot of songs off my PS3 or I’ll fill up the harddrive. By only allowing it to work with MP3s Criterion effectively decided that AAC (ipod format) & WMA are useless on PS3s. Cmon u guys how much more work could it have taken to allow AAC & WMA? Seriously couldn’t be as much work as I & everyone else who wasn’t using mp3 now has to do removing transferring & converting our entire libraries. So thanks for that major pain in the ass. Otherwise Cagney is cool except that now I’ll never finish the old challenges because every freeburn challenge game I join everyone is only doing the 70 new timed challenges and that pisses me off.
