643 0

Hi everyone! We know you’re all patiently waiting for the next PS3 firmware update, v2.40, which includes XMB access in-game and Trophy support. The good news is that it’s coming soon, and you can now see how accessing the XMB from in-game will work in this video demo.

Shortly, we’ll be posting another video here on the PlayStation.Blog that shows the Trophy feature in action for the first time. At that time we’ll provide even more details on how firmware v2.40 will enhance your PLAYSTATION 3 experience.

  • great stuff Sony. thanks

  • Thank you Playstation Network operations.

    Request
    1.Cross Game Chat
2.Upgraded Flash Player in Web Browser

Besides that great job ppl. Looking forward to update.

  • YEEESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!! I love you Sony!!!

  • i can honestly say im starting to get excited!!!!!!!!!!!

    its about g’damn time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    thanks

  • Are we going to be able to use the blu-ray remote to control MP3 playback in-game?

  • Very nice! I am looking forward to this, just 2 more days omgomg

  • Well I am now officially all hyped up about 2.4, bring it on already!!!

  • I appreciate the engineering effort behind the scenes to get this update done. Personally, I don’t really care about in-game XMB, but I like the idea of trophies and it is great to see you guys listening to the requests of consumers. I’m glad you limited the in-game XMB to low resource intensive tasks like texting and didn’t include some of the things people are now asking for like accessing videos and the store without exiting a game. One of the biggest advantages that consoles have over PCs is the fact that there aren’t 100 different things running in the background inevitably sucking up system resources. Every bit of memory that has to be allocated incase a user wants to do something other than playing a game is memory that can’t be used for what game console is really supposed to do: running a game. Great job!

  • This is an awesome update, but if i honestly cant have a hat with my friend in the middle of the game i might never touch this system again, thats what i’ve been mainly waiting for with this update

  • Will we be able to use these trophies as currency for purchases in the PLAYSTATION Store?

  • We’ve waited along time, 2 days will go by quick ;)

( for me at least, Once you get me on Warhawk you cant get me off :P )

  • Great job Sony, I really appreciate your efforts!

  • What about conducting a video chat during the game?

  • holy shart that looks good! exceeds my expectations

    cheers,
    Lh

  • TOO… MUCH… WIN… !!!

  • When will we see useradjustable subtitles in dvd’s and BR’s, I mean, being able to move the subs around when watching a movie (especially up and down), because a lot of companies put the subs on the wrong position (half in the active screen and half in the blackbars) which is a [DELETED] for projectors (or people who really like to enjoy movies just like in the theaters).. Also it would be very nice to have regionfree dvd playback so I can use the PS3 to play all my dvd’s and not have to use a separate for those dvd’s that are region 1 (I’m region 2)..

  • The features look great.

I just hope we can use the browser in game. Imagine playing a game, you get stuck on it so you want to go to a walkthrough or find tips on how to beat a certain part. You press the PS Button and go to the browser, go to your favorite game-help site and look up how to beat a certain part. Then just simply press the PS Button again to close the browser and proceed to beating the game.

Voice chat with anybody at any time would be a great addition as well. Some games don’t have voice-chat features (MKII) and when I play with friends I can’t tell how much my ownage affected them.

  • Yes, great update, great job getting the XMB memory usage down over the past years/months. Also for the reviewers out saying why have access to everything if you can not do it wihtout leaving teh game, you must really not think logically. How great is it if I want to watch a movie, just sselect that, you don’t have to exit out, go over to movies, slect the movie, then select play. Great update and look forward to future stuff. One thing that is needed still is cross game chat while in game, but this is a GREAT start.

  • Amazing update can’t wait only thing thats missing is private chat so i can talk to my buds before we hit a match but then again that will be in home… or if its on this update sorry must have missed the info when i was reading.
    Good job sony thanks.

  • I presume we’ll be able to use music on other computers, too? All my music is stored on my PC and I’d like to be able to play it that way without having to copy it to the PS3, as well.

Also, this is probably asking too much, but, Last.fm support? :D

  • Does this mean that we will be able to access the XMB during a movie? Also, can I change the audio settings in-game?

  • this is perfect. i love you sony.

  • Eric – Wicked cool update! This has been my #1 issue with the system and it’s awesome to see it addressed. It’s actually pretty cool to be part of a growing technology like this. I know a TON of hard work went into this new feature from you and your team so THANK YOU for making this available. It will help the PS3 community explode!

  • Excellent!! There is everything I wanted! Thanks so much Sony! I love this update! Very exciting!!

  • hello this odd to me … where is Playstation Home I’ve been waitting for word on this item since fall 2007 what’s the word guys?

  • When will we get In-Game Game?

    JK

  • Once again thanks Eric for the big firmware update! I hope you guys can come up with a in game function to video chat.

  • I have a question about playing music while in a game. I love the feature, but I want to know if it will have a more extensive volume control other than just +1/-1 and +2/-2 with normal being zero. Will there be more incremental increases/decreases available in a volume change? I would really appreciate this feature as sometimes I want to hear game sounds moreso than music and viceversa.

  • @521
If you have a media server, and you have the option enabled in the PS3, you should be able to get to your music. I use Mediatomb for Linux and I am able to get to my music.

  • About time!

  • Yes, finally. This is really great news. I can’t believe it’s actually coming this soon.

  • yey!!!THANKS ALOT ERIC AND JEFF!!!!!!

  • now if only wednesday would get here faster!

  • Lovin it! :]

  • hey eric or jeff…do you think there is any chance of you guys implementing in-game audio chat anytime during the ps3’s life-span?

  • Does he actually state that in-game voice chat isn’t coming?

  • Sony, awesome job. I really appriciate the hard work you guys did and quality of this update. It’s everything I wanted and dreamed of and even more. Now, the question is, what are we ps3 gamers going to ask for next? That’s a hard question. My requests, but are not neccesities are:
-In game chat, cross game chat (audio only; video not necessary)
-Able to watch videos stored on a users ps3 hdd or display web page when in a chat room out of game.
-More functionality during chat-room (go online, etc…)
-More avatars, possibly an avatar download service in the PS Store.
-Upgraded flash player for the internet browser to view more videos beyond youtube, such as the ones on this blog.

These are some of the minor requested features I think would make the OS just flawless. This update looks really stout, and thank you again Sony for keeping us informed and your creation.

  • Very Nice!

I have one question, I was watching a bluray movie last night, and I noticed that I get logged out of the PSN while I watch the movie. This is nice if you don’t want to be interrupted during your movie, but I was patiently waiting for a friend to come online so we could play some Warhawk, when I’m offline I can’t see those messages. Can I have the option of staying logged into the PSN?

That would be great, and thanks for 2.4!

  • @521 I want to know if streaming is supported for the in-game background music feature too. I don’t want to copy all my music to the PS3.

  • Best Firmware ever!!! And ist on my Birthday :-D

  • Still no Netflix. So sad :-(

  • I bought my PS3 approximately 3 months after launch. Everyday after I get out of work I go through forums and news sites just to cheack out what’s new. Everyday I saw people post good things about the Playstion 3 and bad things about the Playstation 3. And through it all I kept my opinions to myself. I kept my mouth shut.

But now, now is when I created an account on this blog. Strictly just to post this comment.

I own an Xbox 360. Its in my brother’s room. I hardly play it. The games I liked where always on the PS3, and the free internet gaming was only on the PS3.

But people talked so bad about it. It didn’t measure up to the Xbox because it lacked in-game music. in-game communication. in-game XMB… And in one swift blow, one single update, all those voices where all shut out.

Personally the “Gamerscore” concept was never really for me. The numbers where too static. 123,000 points for you, 235,037 for me. It didn’t catch my attention. But TROPHIES, actual objects, Bronze, Silver, Gold, THAT sounds like something I can really get into. They took the “Gamerscore” concept and gave it LIFE. That along with Home, I can forsee a lot of happy campers.

Overnight the Playstation 3 will take LEAPS past the competition in terms of features and functionality.

I can truly now say that with this firmware update the Playstation 3 will finally be complete. Anything that comes after this is bonus. And I personally want to thank everyone that made this happen. Thank you.

    Laters.

  • So I’m not sure if this question has been asked before, or if any of the moderators are still paying attention to questions asked 500+ responses into a thread, but…

Since we’re able to access the XMB at any time now, does that mean downloading items will no longer be idle during gameplay?

    -Thanks

  • Its About Freaking time! jeeze

  • I’m not going to lie this is a good update but

it took to long for scea to deliver it I

mean how hard could this update be come on

its not that that big of an upgrade.

  • That’s awesome that we can listen to some of our own music during Pixie Junk Monster, but say i wanna listen to some System of a Down during the God of War II theme song about holding the devils pot of tea… can i do that?

  • Here’s hoping I catch your attention Jeff.

My question is will the capability of custom soundtracks be a requisite for future titles? I mean, if future games do not support this option, then nothing has changed really. It would essentially be titles like Super Stardust, which already have the capacity to play custom soundtracks.
