Firmware (v.2.40) Walkthrough Part 1: the XMB

643 0

Hi everyone! We know you’re all patiently waiting for the next PS3 firmware update, v2.40, which includes XMB access in-game and Trophy support. The good news is that it’s coming soon, and you can now see how accessing the XMB from in-game will work in this video demo.

Shortly, we’ll be posting another video here on the PlayStation.Blog that shows the Trophy feature in action for the first time. At that time we’ll provide even more details on how firmware v2.40 will enhance your PLAYSTATION 3 experience.

  • This is GREAT!

  • Hey Eric

thanks for the video it’s awsome

i knew in game xmb was real! one question tho will fw 2.40 be out before friday because i am going away and will only have

dial up.. i really wanna load up music to my
ps3 cuz thats all im gonna be doing is playing it at my friends for 3 weeks thanks again.

  • @50″no cross game voice chat?!?!”

one thing at a time mate!

  • @229:

Yea I thought about that knowing the differences. However my logic was regardless of the technical specs of the PS3 and streaming it directly to your PS3 from PC, it’s still using your PS3’s bandwith regardless of your online conection. So not only is there a downstream from your PC (which btw for me, my PS3 is connected wirelessly which is slightly slower or more prone to lag)as well as an up and downstream to the servers playing the game. I’m sure it’s possible, but to be effecient especially since it’s a newly implimented feature, that option would be disabled. There is always hope for the future for people who need it. Me myself, I normally stream music myself but I don’t mind installing songs to my hdd.

  • This is alright.. =P

  • @234
YOU HAVE THE WORST IDEAS FOR FUTURE UPGRADES EVER.
XMB option to save current system state (memory dump) to save to disk the memory state of the system and shutdown. Basically I’m playing the best I’ve ever scored in a game, then I get a call and I have to leave immediately — I just write a memory image, shut down, and can restore later once my crisis is over. WTF????!!

  • but it seems that a new book has jest opened up titled IN-GAME MESSAGING well look like we will go on another adventure Jeff.

  • Lol, PS Nation hinted on some news on Monday. Didn’t expect this at all!

    Nice going SONY!

  • I LOVE IT!!!!!

Only think i dislike is the fact that you will have to pause the game first – that seems kinda stupid. The current PS button functionality pauses the game.

Some of the functions also seem, from a usability point of view, a bit “quick and dirty” – the XMB menu system is starting to being bloated – so Sony will soon have to decide – should they increase the numbers of “menuitems” on the horizontal?

  • I meant to say IN-GAME VOICE MESSAGING.

  • @ 255

Not really. The Hybernating option would be very benifical. I’d also like to see a sleep timer for the ps3 aswell for when watching blu-rays. I often fall asleep while watching a movie and have my LCD on a 120 min timer, but my ps3 remains running long afterwards until I get so hot I have to turn it off myself.

  • @253

ok yes, wireless could be a problem while playing online and streaming at the same time due to lag bandwith etc. Im connected to my network using a 1Gbit (1000Mbit) switch (PS3 had a 1Gbit RJ45 Lan connection). And to the internet using a 12Mbit download and 2Mbit upload connection. Streaming and online playing games wont be a problem i guess.

  • thank you so much sony!!! and the best part is its FREE!

  • Great work! =)
Are you going to add ISO standard time? You know YYYY-MM-DD, note the dashes instead of slashes.

  • @258

You don’t have to pause the game, Eric was doing that so he didn’t crash into any walls in GT5. Didn’t you see PJM playing in the background as he was selecting his music? Anyways bravo Sony. Hope it comes out soon! :)

  • Oh @people who want a way to change display settings in-game. Let’s be logical here. Even when you play a game on your PC and change the in-game resolution they tell you to exit and restart the game. So why even ask for something like that. Yes it would be convient for you, but you’re asking for something not even PC’s are capable of doing. Be glad knowing you’re able to go to the display settings quit the game change your resolution and then restart the game.

  • Excellent, just excellent. This update will definitely exceed my expectations, In Game Messaging was the must for me, and now in just a short time will be available as well as Trophies and Custom Soundtracks. Definitely one of the best blog posts to date IMO.

  • bOO YAA!!

  • I hope someone from Xbox is reading these posts because at 9am this morning my xbox live subscription is cancelled bye bye paying for gaming…….

Nice one Sony….cant wait for part 2.

    GET IN!!!!!!

  • @205

Even before that, the ps1 pretty much mopped the floor with the n64 (looking at consoles sold)

*that was not meant to rhyme*

  • AND WHO WOULD GIVE THIS VIDEO LESS THAN A 5? IN MY EYES THE PS3 IS COMPLETE. IM MAINLY EXCITED ABOUT C.SOUNDTRACKS AND THE LITTLE CLOCK! IN GAME MESSAGING IS COOL TOO BUT EVERYONE ON MY FIRENDS LIST ARE MY REAL FRIENDS SO WE CAN JUST CALL ON THE PHONE. TO EVERYONE ELSE.. THERES NOTHING ELSE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT SO PLEASE STOP! SONY HAS FINALLY DELIVERED. THIS POST SHOULD RECIEVE NO LESS THAN A 5. TAKE YOUR BS SOMEWHERE ELSE!

  • I’m expecting 2.4 to launch around E3, but I’m sure the anticipation for the trophy video will be great too. :) Actually it might come before E3, next weekish maybe, either way I can’t wait.

  • Good…good…now to release the update…

Then it will be time to move on to the next update for features that we’re heard. When will games start supporting the upload to youtube video functions?

  • Thank you!

  • Nice one!!! ;-P HOME next ;)

  • @265

I just proved you wrong. I just swaped out Crysis on full settings to Crysis on 800 x 600

Xbox 360 can do this same feature. I don’t know what you people are on about saying it can’t be done. I have a dual core double hdmi grafix card in my pc and it does it just fine. The xbox 360 does as well.

If you would actually read what I wrote then you’d understand what I am asking for.

I am simply asking for the option to swap rezolutions in game and have it then reboot. I’m not asking for it to scale to screen and fit to image on the fly. I am asking for the access to display settings in game, allow me to uncheck 720P and 1080P at will and then have it reboot the game while at the start menu of that game.

    That is all.

  • Hey! Thanks for another FANTASTIC update!!! Suggestions:

    1. Better on-screen keyboard!!!!!!!!!! (replicate the Danzeff OSK found here: http://pspupdates.qj.net/index.php?pg=49&aid=23876)
    2. Separate auto-play setting for BD/DVD vs. game disc!!!
    3. Ability to reorder downloads in download manager
    4. A system cooldown timer after power off would be nice (system is hot after game play and then the system fans stop blowing after power off direct from in-game)
    5. Add video thumbnail feature found on the PSP
    6. All system dialogues should default to “Yes” choice not “No”. And Remove “Delete Completed” dialog.
    7. Ability to easily add files to a folder grouping in XMB… annoying having to type in group title to each individual file
    8. The browser should auto-zoom the text field when entering data. Better flash support & “select” should equal a tabbed interface with bookmarks AND history. Furthermore, triangle should allow for opening of aforementioned “in a new window”.
    9. When your deep in XMB menus (especially on media server directories) holding left should back you out of the menus to the root xmb category and stop there.

Whew! That was long winded! Thanks for the update again and for listening the user community! You’re awesome!

  • @260 gamesblow
You mean a sleep timer.? yes that would be cool. everything else. no

  • awesome,,,,you guys rock,,that’s all I wanted for now, so you can take your time with home as long as you like.

  • Finally :)

  • well i was hoping for access to the PS store, internet browser, in-game voice chat and all the settings but i guess the messaging and music will do untill these features come

  • Is it me, or the PS3 looks really small. I think that massive HDTV have something to do with it. Phew…… I wish I had that beast.

  • When is part 2 coming? Should I go sleep?

  • Thanks for the update! Can’t wait much longer! AAAHHHH!!!!

  • @276:

I read what I said, and I am correct. However I read your response, and yes you are able to change the resolution in-game however for a majority of titles that I can recall, for the settings to take proper effect, “it is recommended that you exit and restart your game.” So again what you are askin for is convient to you, but not needed because at some point you are going to have to exit the game for the effects to take place. For games to have a built in resolution changer would require the devs to utilize such code in there games, however seeing as though this is a console and not a pc they optimize there settings for a pre-defined resolution. The PC is more flexible as far as what resolutions your monitor can display. TV’s are more defined. And again I iterate, it’s pointless because 1. they have given you access to the options in order to change your resolution accordingly and 2. the system will require you to restart the game anyways in order for the new resolution to take effect so why complain?

  • I feel like a kid in a candy store right about now. I want to see part 2 of the video giving us the lowdown on the trophy system.

  • WE WON THE WAR AGAINST XBL geah.. thanks sony but will there be in game vocie chat with it as well. i would love it. i could finaly talk to my friend while playing MKII or dbz and to tp it off i could listen to my music while i do all that. THANK EVERYONE WHO HELPED BRING US 2.40 THANKZ :’)

  • its kinda sad you have to pay for this feature on xbox live.

  • Ok, you give us cross-game messaging. What about cross-game voice chat?! Come on that would make communicating with friends so much easier.

  • Second video will be posted in 3 hours and 45 minutes.

    5am PST / 8am EST

  • @287

Don’t ever say the other console’s name again.

  • Thanks for the walkthrough movie Eric and Jeff. Can’t wait for the update. :D

  • ALELUYA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for this update. You guys Rock.

  • sweet jesus someone pinch me i must be dreaming

  • Please have whatever game you’re playing pause when you hit the PS button. Not a big deal, but even more of a convenience.

  • @monkeyisland,

Don’t worry, I’m sure either Sony or the retailer you bought your ps3 from will be able to replace your ps3 if you continue to have problems with it. Just don’t freak out on us, alright? (Too late) lol
