Firmware (v.2.40) Walkthrough Part 1: the XMB

643 0

Hi everyone! We know you’re all patiently waiting for the next PS3 firmware update, v2.40, which includes XMB access in-game and Trophy support. The good news is that it’s coming soon, and you can now see how accessing the XMB from in-game will work in this video demo.

Shortly, we’ll be posting another video here on the PlayStation.Blog that shows the Trophy feature in action for the first time. At that time we’ll provide even more details on how firmware v2.40 will enhance your PLAYSTATION 3 experience.

  • Hopefully, the ability to listen to your personal audio recordings will be shut off automatically when playing online games that use voice chat or there will be more people being muted when playing.

I don’t want to have to listen to someone elses favorite songs/albums when doing Call of Duty. This update may encourage some players to play their personal audios without concern of complaints that they might receive from others to turn it off.

But, the ability to play your own music in your offline games is a nice one. Thanks.

  • I still need in-game voice chat (Different games)…And video chat in-game…

  • 8:01 was referring to the trophy video.

  • Personal profiles and avatars are needed.. Better, video chat software and in-chat music…

  • One more feature for PS3 to scare Microsoft

    – CROSS GAME INVITES

In case people don’t know what they are. They allow you to select a friend and invite him into the multiplayer match you are playing. Quick and easy. No searching for people.

  • this update good enough they can take their time with the next one
but i do want flash player a newer version in both the psp and ps3 this is what hold the psp and ps3 web surfing ability!!!!

  • How is ANYONE voting this post anything less than a 5??? Whenever there is news of an upcoming update, that means that it is a mere couple of days away! Here’s hoping this golden update is released this week, before E3!!!

  • It’s a very good start. Thank you Sony!

  • Damn, watching the video in anticipation this morning.

I have only 1 thing to say Sony. THANK YOU! :D

PS. When can we see iPod support?

  • Awesome!!!! It is all OFFICIAL and it coming very soon. I can not wait to see the Trophy System in action. Time needs to move faster and zoom straight to the release of 2.40. Can not wait. Thanks

  • why not called the day of the fw release?

  • to 347
I dont think this will be a problem. My PC is right next to my ps3 so i have external speakers for it that are about 1m away from where i sit and nobody has ever complained to me about it before (until i start singing along :P). If you dont play music too loud i dont see it being a problem. However i can see your point as on xbox live i do get frustrated once in a while with people playing music too loud. If they keep it to a sensible volume it will all be good.

Cant wait till the next video and i hope theyve just missed out the in game private chat as i know this is an important feature to one of my friends who refuses to play offline without it. Just need a release date now :D

  • Having voice chat in a game is up to the individual publishers I believe. There are games out there that do have that feature right now.

  • @325

My god man, did you watch the video?

  • @360

Yes he did. Did you read his post properly?

  • why is it that I can’t post a link to a screen where you see ingame chat invites!?

  • This is awesome. I would have been happy with just messaging and other friendslist actions, but this is simply awesomenes.

  • last try – thesixthaxis.com/images/uploads/178.jpg

  • A very pleasant surprise! Made my day- ps3 rocks.

  • Nice FYI – now I dont have to hear about how in game music was not coming (LOL). I have a few games that support it now, so I know it has always been available for the software devs but thanks for making it there for the lazy devs….

  • This is amazing…it’s exactly what I always dreamed of!

  • Thank you thank you Eric !!!

OMG i can’t believe it im going to play my music while playing GT5 soon :'(

  • Nice, trophy section is what I am really anticipating.

  • This is all very good, but it’s trophies that i’m really excited about! That’ll give me a reason to complete games I otherwise couldn’t be bothered to. Good stuff i’m sure, get that video out soonish! (or even better, the update)

  • Hmm that looks dissapointing. It’s the same old XMB. Not even Microsoft used their exact same dashboard when you press the middle button.

Sorry Sony, that just looks lazy.

  • @371

might not be gettin your comment right but what do u want then? id rather have the XMB. why would you wanna learn where everything is all over again. XMB is great no point changing it. nice and organized

  • awesome

  • I tried to read through and see if anyone else had mentioned it, but…why does sony not make it a requirement that all games pause (if actually possible at that exact time) when the PS button is pressed? I know a few games do, but why is this not standard practice?

  • @361 yes he wanted to use google in game. Which happens at the end if you didn’t notice…

  • Hmm, custom soundtracks are cool… they really need to fix character support though. It’s worse than the PSP, I had Ænema from Tool on my PSP, tried to copy it to my PS3 and it doesn’t even see the folder. It could at least leave the Æ off or something, instead it doesn’t even show it…

  • @371: DO NOT FEED THE TROLL! Better Idea: Release the FW today!

  • FINALLY! THANK YOU SONY. I DID MENTION ABOUT ADDING A CLOCK.

I HOPE PART TWO WILL HAVE SOMETHING ABOUT AN XMB CHAT.

SINCE THE PS3 IS A MEDIA HUB IT WOULD GREAT IF CHAT WAS NOT JUST TO ONE AREA. WE SHOULD BE ABLE JUST TALK, MAYBE UP TO 4 PERSONS AT A TIME. ALSO IT WOULD BE COOL IF WE COULD TURN OFF/ON A FEATURE TO DISPLAY TO OUR FRIENDS WHAT BLU-RAY MOVIES WE ARE WATCHING JUST LIKE WHEN WE ARE BUSY PLAYING GAMES.

  • @372 Its not exactly hard remembering where everything is. And I can’t wait for 3.40. But I just don’t think it looks like it will ive up to Sonys promises

@377 Stop being a fanboy. Someone says something bad about your Playstation you cry!

And yes I lve the PS3 BTW fanboys. Its the only next gen syste I’ll ever own.

  • Ahhhh….what a great way to wake up in the morning =)! Thank you!

  • that’s awesome

what monkeyisland said got me nervous, my ps3 froze the second day I bought it, when I was saving GTA4, that was yesterday.

  • Ah that wasn’t in-game. My mistake!

  • Hey, anyone notice the date on the clock display? 6/19. Yep, either the date on the PS3 is wrong (doubtful), or the video was made on 6/19, at about (what looks like) either 4:05 or 4:15.

  • I couldn’t go without saying that the media controls will cause discomfort to people that are not patient enough to scroll all the way up, or simply put, for people that needs to quickly do what they want before they die in the game [e.g. say.. online COD4?] . SO how about using the “select” button while inside XMB to activate media controls? it is a lot faster and makes more sense. seeing how the “select” button is never used on the XMB.. (well from my experience;;) and later on, you could also add like a quick access system where if when the “select” button is activated, it could bring up certain application according to the button you press [e.g. “triangle” for media controls, “square” for Battlefield Bad Company, “X” for a certain music album, etc.]

just thought that this could be an idea outside the box and something Xbox hasn’t thought of yet.

  • Oh yeah I’m also dissapointed you can’t view photos in game yet but they said they were updating…

  • i want 2.40 :D

  • don’t complain people, this is truly heart warming….. just need to know WHEN DOES IT COME…… oh and DON”T WAIT TILLL E3 PLZ !!!! or new years *tear.

  • um i don’t understand people who want in game picture viewing that a dumb idea and make no sence at all.Eric please disregard those request cause the majority of people would care less about in game picture viewing.

  • cant wait, im looking forward to this firmware update. thx sony

  • Will we be able to get thropyz for our older games?

  • Hi Jeff! Thanks for the video, I have been waiting for this. It looks nice you guys have things running pretty smooth now, so thumbs up for that, but I have one question for you:

    – Can we use voicechat in a game trough the in-game XMB Friends-category?

Would be a real dissapointment for me if it turns out this feature is missing. Messaging is great ofcourse, but voicechat is what it’s all about for me!
Wouldn’t it be great to just have a nice conversation with a (or more) friend(s) while enjoying a single- or multiplayer game?

That’s it. Thanks for your time in advance. I have nothing more to say. This already are great improvements!

  • great stuff.

do you have any idea when playstation home will be coming out?

  • Thanks Jeff, and Sony. Simply amazing. Like EVERYONE else, I’m left wondering if we can access voice-chat while in game? I think this is pretty much the only reason I personally wanted in-game xmb. Here’s hoping!

  • Cross game invites would really require dev support.

  • It’s me again.. Still wondering if voicechat will be availble, though I’m guessing now that it very well could be (done)..
I mean; if you can register BlueTooth devices and play music in a game, my guess is that it wouldn’t be much of a problem to start a voicechat with friends..

It could be just me, but doesn’t that make perfect sense?

  • Now I FINALLY feel like my PS3 will be a complete device! I used to avoid signing on to the PSN b/c I hated not being able to respond to messages from my Friends’ List when in the middle of a game.

Thanks for FINALLY delivering this, SONY–please get the update out soon.
