Firmware v2.40 FAQ

Eric Lempel's Avatar Posted by

SVP, Marketing & PlayStation Network

Hi again! It’s great to see the positive reaction to the unveiling of system software update v2.40. We can’t wait for you to finally go hands-on with XMB access in-game and the Trophy system – and it’s less than 2 days away. Not surprisingly, a number of you have posed questions both here and on other forums. Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Will voice-messaging/private chat be featured in 2.40 as well? If not, can we expect to see this feature added in the future?

We are evaluating the opportunity to offer voice chat, but for this update, we wanted to focus on text messaging as the key priority for communications that our users have asked for.

Can you use the web browser in game?

No, you must exit the game before browsing the internet.

Will In-Game XMB come up during playback of PS2 games, Blu-Ray discs, and DVDs?

The XMB is an exclusive feature for PS3 game titles. Accessing the XMB during gameplay was the top request from our users, which we focused on for this update. However, we continually engage PS3 owners for feedback and will evaluate the opportunity to offer XMB access during movie playback in the future.

Can we go to the display settings and change anything there in-game (resolution, input, etc)?

No, you must exit the game before changing these settings.

Will it be possible to change in-game the sound output?

Yes, sound output changes are supported.

Will we be able to access the PLAYSTATION Store while in-game?

No, but you can view your downloads in progress.

Will we be able to stream music (either via media server or USB drive) for custom soundtracks or is it relegated to music stored on the HDD?

Currently only music stored on the HDD is accessible in games that support this feature. We’d also like to reiterate that Firmware v2.40 merely enables custom soundtracks. It’s up to developers to include this feature in upcoming games (or to patch existing ones).

Does 2.4 enable cross game invites? Will it down the line?

No, cross-game invites are not available in this system software update. We are evaluating opportunities to expand on the new features delivered in 2.40.

Will trophies be mandatory for all games release here on out?

We are working with developers to ensure that Trophies are supported across the board in the future.

Where is each player’s trophy stat info held? I am going to upgrade my hard drive and I don’t know if the trophies will still be on my account if I earn some and then get a new hard drive.

Trophies will be attached to users’ PSN ID. Trophy data needs to be synchronized to the online account on PSN to be transferred to the new PS3 system.

Will the patch automatically allocate unlocked trophies according to your saved files or would you have to do it again?

    No, Trophies aren’t retroactive.

Can we view PSN profiles/Trophies from a PC using a Web browser? Will there be an API for web developers to access the PSN data, so online profiles can be created?

We’re evaluating these opportunities to expand where Trophies can be experienced.

Can you only compare trophies with friends that are online?

As long as a friend has a PSN account, you can compare trophies with them regardless of their online status.

Is there a limit to how many trophies the devs can put set by Sony?

There’s not a limit on number of trophies, but there’s a value assigned to each trophy. Developers must balance out the trophies that are available to stay within an overall value based on whether the game is considered large-scope or small-scope. Essentially, a user that has unlocked every trophy in one game would have the same level as a user that unlocked every trophy in another title, all titles (depending on scope) have the same overall impact on a users’ level.

Will new games have a cool little icon on the back saying “trophy compatible?”

We’re currently working on how Trophy support will be messaged to the consumer on our software packaging.

When you get a trophy, does it make a noise?

Currently, no. How quickly things can change – there *will* be a sound effect when you unlock a Trophy.

    What is Eric’s favorite cheese?

Once again, we will continue to evaluate opportunities to enhance the PLAYSTATION 3’s system software throughout the console’s life cycle. Consumer feedback has contributed greatly to the contents of Firmware v2.40, and continues to be appreciated. Don’t forget, this Firmware will be available for download on July 2nd.

After 2.4 is release is it possible to get a list of games (first and third party) patched to support the update’s new features?

That would help me a lot. If not, that’s cool.

Honestly, I thought since it took so long to come out with this that everything would be addressed. No unified network ID, no cross game invites, no voice, thats the whole reason to have in-game XMB. so i can communicate in those ways. text is not gonna cut it man.

I hope in the future you will be able to change your display settings. I also would like it if the theme wouldnt reset every time you reset the display settings.

Not going to happen – if people cheat (and some people no doubt would), then it diminishes the experience for everyone. Trophies will be earned, and everyone starts out at the bottom on day 1.

I, for one, am looking forward to picking up a game that maybe I haven\’t played much recently, and playing with new purpose.

And, of course, it\’s all optional.

Hey Jeff great update!thnx to all you guys who are workin hard to get it out but to my question, i know people could upload a save file to get trophies but for a game like warhawk is there anything you could do so us Warhawkers can gain our hardly earned trophies?

i know im not the only one to feel this way about this game because me, my clan, and many others have played the game for countless hours and to be told we wont receive the trophies we deserve is a real downer. Could you guys at Psn and Incognito create an app or something to see the points per hour and somehow indicate if its “right/correct” according to your guidlines?

Is closed captioning supported yet?

My Mac can play DVDs that have embedded closed captioning in the video stream. I was going to buy a PS3 but now I can’t play my old DVDs because I don’t hear well. Millions of baby boomer customers. Millions of hearing impaired people. Makes economic sense to pursue putting this capability into the PS3. Thanks for your time and consideration.

All my questions are answered. Its a great step forward, I hope the aforementioned in-video XMB, voice chat gets implemented sometime soon.

I think a really cool feature to satisfy those wanting a Trophy Unlock sound, would be to have that be something you can modify as part of your theme. You can choose from pre-determined sounds, or pick from WAV files on your HDD so that everytime you unlock a Trophy or a friend gets on it could play the MGS Alert sound or something.

June 30th, 3:50 pm

Hi Jeff, Do you think in a future update you could implement hyperlinks in our text chats? Like I could say “Hey Jeff check out“. And then you click that link and the PS3 browser would pop up a message asking you if want it to open that link for you. Thought this would save some typing.

You guys are doing a great job, keep it up!

So I have to replay my games again to unlock the trophies? How would I get trophies for Rainbow Six Vegas 2 if it’s already unlocked? Same goes for Uncharted, HVB, PAIN, Burnout. Thanks if you respond. Anyways thanks for the FAQ.

Viper7 said:

“Are any of the games that are already released gonna get trophy support(Resistance, Ratchet, Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid 4, etc.)?”

Imsomniac said something about that resistance: fall of man will not support the trophy system because it would need dramatic changes to the games code or sumthing.
Resistance2 will get trophyes however

Metal gear solid 4 might already have something like this, no1 really knows.

as with not being retroactive I can understand

(its mostly imbossible for Sony to scan savefiles for trophy data (atleast from 1st party games), expecialy now that we know trophyes will be PSN account related (this means developers will have to make the game react and send data to psn when something worth a trophy is achieved))

But I would love to get answers on my question at 78

Sweet! excellent news Eric. i’l admit, i’ve been pretty ticked off for a while about not hearing anything official, but I just played my games and went on with my life lol. but it’s great to finally hear it from the horses mouth that it’s indeed ready and coming. again, thanks!

My single remaining question would be:

So, is that a patched version of Pixeljunk Monsters Encore then, since he listened to his own music while playing? Will we be able to do the same on Wednesday?

That was a modified, earlier version of Firmware 2.4 (check the date when we show the clock). No word yet on if PJM will patch that functionality.

Since you can’t get a trophy for an achievement that u already accomplished, let’s say for example Warhawk, will you just not get a trophy? because the only way that you could restart the game would be???

Eric, Thansk so much for all that you do for us. I do have a question that I’m almost sure wont get answered though.

First off, Sony had such great insight to put a Blu-ray drive in every PS3, but they didn’t have enough insight to have in game XMB on the hardware side from day one? How can that be?

Thanks for your time.

How many games that are already out are expected to be patched to support trophies?

Ive got a couple of small questions..

Given that this update will insert new icons into the XMB, will themes created pre firmware 2.40 still work?

Will the new icons be customizable in new ps3 themes?

SabbathRider said:

I was hoping you could answer this for me. Will there be a number of games, apart from psn games that will be releasing patches within days of the update to allow us to play music and gain trophies? or will we have to wait for a month of two to have a good choice of compatable games?

I would really appreciate if you could answer this for me.

SLR2007 said:

@78 Viper7 I agree with you and I have the same questions as well. I’ll be hugely disappointed if I have to replay my games over again. What’s stopping anyone from downloading a game save from the internet thats 99% completed and you simply beat it and recieve the trophy? This is really bad news for us honest players.

SONY, YOU CAN RELEASE HOME NOW!!! None of the other features of Home matter besides finding a way to make Gamer Levels tie in to the Home experience… Whether this be in the form of special clothing, skins, furniture, or apartments available for certain levels.

THIS IS THE ONLY THING FURTHER THAT YOU SHOULD BE WORKING ON. I guarantee you that this will be the feature which definitely earns Home (and Sony) respect above and beyond what Xbox Live has to offer.

I have always wondered one thing, maybe you can or Eric can answer it for me.

Where does the coding for firmware updates happen?
Or is it a joint effort of all SCEI?

Kenaue said:

The ions on pre-2.40 themes will probably still work, but the new ones will probably be the original icons until 2.40 compatible themes come out.

Warhawk is psn related game on the status part. so when you get your 100 kills trophy or something, all the stats will be updated and trophyes should be opened in theory.
But untill you start partying I would wait for confirmation

Inevitable there are always going to be people who are never happy with whatever you give us (for free I might add)

Thankyou for keeping us informed

I think it was a bad idea to not have the trophies retoactive. I know people use other’s gamesaves but I dont see why you couldn’t just make it so that they are just tied to your ID. Playing games over like GTA, Oblivion or Warhawk for trophies would be a huge headache, especially if you’ve racked up a whole bunch of stats that would have equalled a trophy

Michael1406 said:

I have a request, I haven’t looked to see if there’s an official place to ask but here it is regardless.

Will the option be enabled to copy (and copy multiple) from an external storage device when in the ‘View All’ mode? I can’t view my music via the standard way and as a result can’t copy using that method.

Can’t wait for the update, a clock and in-game messaging will be great (and when GTA4 gets a patch custom music will be too)!

@ 31: You may be paying $60 for a game, but how much is the developer paying for a full original soundtrack to be composed and recorded, or liscensed for games with popular music like Burnout.

I’m surprised you didn’t say when talking about cross-game invites that they are already implemented, a firmware update is not nessescary. The system and tools are already out there for developers to add in but the majority currently chose not to include it.

I have a few questions. Please answer Jeff or Eric!

1) Will you please make trophies retroactive? I spent many hours on games and making me do them again just makes it seem like you’re screwing the early adopter.

2) Can you please fix the sign out of PSN error in PS2 games?

3) Will you please make in-game XMB/in-game music compatable with all PS1, PS2, and PS3 games and DVD and Blu-ray movies?

4) Will you please put in-game private chat and cross game invites in?

Don’t get me wrong, I love what 2.4 does and its definatley a step in the right direction but these features are what me and my fellow gamers want. I’m not expecting most of these until a later FW update but please read this Jeff or Eric! Thank you :).

Jeff my man,

Eric seemed rather vague to one particular he was asked on; cross game invites. The second part of the question asked whether or not it was possible to have this feature in the future by Eric did not comment further than stating that it was not part of the 2.40 firmware.

Usually when Eric answers any questions regarding on possible expansions he goes along the lines of saying “we are looking into that/evaluating possibilities” yet he did not do so in this regard.

Hey, guys. Thanks for the FAQ.

Just one question, though.

Are you working with the devs closely to encourage them to put in game music in games, or are you just pretty much telling them they have the option to do so?

In-game music is one of the big things for me, so I hope that most, if not all games wil have it.
