Hello again, everyone! Very recently, we demonstrated a major new function enabled in PLAYSTATION 3 firmware v2.40: XMB access in-game. But that’s only part of the story, as the next system software update also introduces the Trophy system to the PS3. This video demonstration shows the system in action.
Super Stardust HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released in June 2007, will be the first game to leverage Trophies and will offer a variety of trophies. Trophy support in Super Stardust HD will be available for first-time users who purchase the game soon after firmware v2.40 is released, while those who previously purchased and downloaded the title will be prompted to install a free patch.
PS3 users can expect to see additional games bringing Trophies support to their feature sets through 2008 and beyond, providing even greater opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and compete with friends. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:
- BUZZ! Quiz TV
- LittleBigPlanet
- MotorStorm Pacific Rift
- NBA 09 – PS3
- PAIN
- PixelJunk Eden
- Resistance 2
- SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
- Warhawk
To further emphasize the community aspects of this system software update, the amount of people you can add to your PSN friends list has been doubled, to 100.
The update also adds a mini-control panel that you can use while playing music and an internet search feature powered by Google that allows you to initiate search directly from the XMB (similar to what we added to the PSP recently). In addition, when you’re using the XMB or accessing the XMB from in-game, the current time and date will be displayed in the upper right hand corner. There are a few more minor enhancements included in this update, once the update is live you’ll be able to read about them here.
Firmware v2.40 will become available for download on July 2nd. We hope you enjoy these much-requested features, and look forward to your feedback.

One small inconvenience I can see with the trophy system right now, is it doesn’t show your level up in front, you actually have to click on your buddies profile to see what level they are.
It would make much more sense to somehow incorporate this into your publicly viewable name, that way you can see all our buddies levels just by looking at their avatar. Cause seriously, who is even going to bother going through their buddies profiles one by one to see what the have achieved? I want to see that number right in front.

2)I own but I have yet to play MGS4, should I wait until a patch gets released to play MGS4? (Cuz really, what would be the point of starting it if I’m going to have tostart it all over again for trophies(in what could possibly be 1-11 months from now))
3)What if a game I currently own won’t ever support trophies? (Like in the scenario I just mentioned, What if MGS4 won’t ever support trophies?, I might as wellstart it now then)
4)How will we know when our games have become trophy ready? (Will we have to constantly pop in games to check or simply constantly check dev websites)
Please don’t get me wrong I’m truly grateful for the advancements the PS3 will make with 2.4, but having to start ALL my games over is angering and saddening. So once again I ask…

So basically, I spent two weeks beating GTA4 100% of release, Getting the Big Boss Emblem and the rest of the emblems on MGS4 in two weeks of release, the MONTHS it took to get all the skill points on Rfom, the days it took to beat Assassins Creed, and the months it took to get all the gold weapons in COD4 and finally beating Through the Fire and Flames on guitar hero is now worth [DELETED]!?

Do you have a sleep timer for movies? When i watch blu ray movies at night my tv has a timer but not my ps3 is there anyway this will be included in the update?

i was planning on geting xbox 360 but now i don’t think there is any need for it.
When the first screenshot was leaked, it didn’t look that great to me. But after watching this video, I’m more than excited for being able to use trophies..

not that i am complaining about the trophies but do you know how long it will be to get them for some games i am afraid to continue on any game knowing that i will have to start over to get the trophies after conquering hot shots i was going back to motorstorn and resistance and a little gta4 but now im just playing online poker dont think i will have to worry about a trophy for that lol

I really couldn’t care less about them and the idea of notices and sounds going off while I play a game alerting me that I’ve scored a trophy is pretty big turn off.
The moment we’ve all been waiting for. The only thing that’s missing is in-game chat and voice messaging.

but agin the voice chat thing.. put that as your num.1 priority if it isnt already.. cuse trust me there is really nothing out there that can compete with this system.. and adding the voice chat feat. will just make them cry.. which is what we want them to do…

2.40 looks like a great Update.
Now I would like to See:
1) Internet Radio like the one on my PSP.
2) Simultaneous output of Audio to HDMI and Optical. HDMI for the TV and Optical for the Stereo. It is quite the pain to have to constantly switch something that the PS2 could do out of the Box.
3) Home.
Leveling up through earning Trophies. I actually think they should implement to rumored PS3 HOME (I know its not a rumor but waiting for it for almost 2 years almost puts it to rumor stage or on par with Duke Nukem) Since everyone going to be on HOME and a lot of us will probably hit the in HOME arcade and games build in with it. Let say there is a arcade game machine standing there and you want to play it but someone is already occupying it upon your arrival there should be a special room or separate arcade machine / in HOME game, reserved for people with high levels hmmm let say level 20 and above and if you have that level you can go up to it and play it and if your level does not match you have to wait your turn or whatever.
that is going to be cool hopefully cod4 gets it

Personally this is my first comment on this site. Just to say in the future mabye you could:
Make a call with a friend, while playing a game, so that when the game is loading or your not in a game, u can still talk with each other. Instead of having to exit and just talk without doing anything.
Also custom Profile Picture.
And i cant think of anymore :( its just so good.
And this is very unlikely but since the ps3 wants to be an all in one unit, then mabye a ps3 instant messenger. Like u could chat with all your friends in one big chat room.
And I just remembered about HOME. I feel stupid.
P.s. When is HOME ever going to come out? Mabye next summer or something I guess. I would rather it was perfect than rushed. Haze is an example of this.

the only thing bad about the trophies system is that it should be for all the games to unlock trophies
Hey, real quick issue with trophies. I downloaded the 4.00 patch for Super Stardust HD, played around for a while, and earned a few trophies. When I popped into the in game XMB to check my gamer level on my gamer profile card, the card had not recognized that I had earned three trophies. So, after a while longer, and a few more checks, my profile card had still not updated, so I quit out of the game, and went to check my profile card in the XMB while NOT in a game, to see if it needed me to quit from the game to update.
This was not the case. For some reason, my trophies did not synchronize to my profile card until I tried to compare my trophies to one of my friends. When I selected the “compare trophies” icon from within my friend’s profile card, the console went through a load screen that said something to the effect of “synchronizing trophy data”. Afterwards, I quit out of the comparison screen, and went to look at my profile card. Huzzah! My three trophies had loaded into my card, and my progress towards the next level was clearly indicated.
My issue is this: Why did my data not sync on its own? There are a few reasons I can think of:
1. There’s a bug in update 2.40.
2. There’s a bug in patch 4.00 for SSHD.
3. The servers are so bogged down by people trying to download 2.40 and 4.00 for SSHD that it ignored any query on my end for a synchronization of the data.
Sorry for the long post, but I felt that I should let you guys know of this issue, so you can either attempt to take care of it, pass this issue along to the SSHD team, or assure me that possibility #3 was the case.
Good job with 2.40, by the way! I’m a happy owner of both a PS3 and an Xbox 360, and this update will go a long way towards which console I’ll be spending most of my summer break with!

I do a theme to my Playstation 3 system, but now after the 2.40 update the “Trophy icon”, the “Shutdown the system” and the “internet serch” a “?” Icon, same as the “online help”
So, whats the name of this 3 icons?
ex. the user raw look like this:
It’s the “Icon ID” fore those 3 icons i want.

Hey i was just playing GTA IV while donloading SUPER STARDUST HD and i noticed that the download was not progressing. When i left the game i could see it was downloading but the ‘watch downloads’ feature wasnt working. It seems to take a screen shot of the download when you enter a game and show you that.
I would like to know if TROPHIES can be use on PS2 titles such as SSX TRicky 3. This game rely on TROPIES and it is still fun.
I just wont the function so that I can go to the XMB in game and send game requests there. also I would like the function to join other peoples game from the XMB in game. Because its so much easier to jump online and join one of your friends games. those features shouldn’t be that hard to implicate. (get on it sony)

Love the update but I wish that they added the voice messaging option that XBOX Live has. Other then that 2.40 was well worth the wait!
