Firmware (v.2.40) Walkthrough Part 2: Trophies

570 0

Hello again, everyone! Very recently, we demonstrated a major new function enabled in PLAYSTATION 3 firmware v2.40: XMB access in-game. But that’s only part of the story, as the next system software update also introduces the Trophy system to the PS3. This video demonstration shows the system in action.

Super Stardust HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released in June 2007, will be the first game to leverage Trophies and will offer a variety of trophies. Trophy support in Super Stardust HD will be available for first-time users who purchase the game soon after firmware v2.40 is released, while those who previously purchased and downloaded the title will be prompted to install a free patch.

PS3 users can expect to see additional games bringing Trophies support to their feature sets through 2008 and beyond, providing even greater opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and compete with friends. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:

  • BUZZ! Quiz TV
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • MotorStorm Pacific Rift
  • NBA 09 – PS3
  • PAIN
  • PixelJunk Eden
  • Resistance 2
  • SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
  • Warhawk

To further emphasize the community aspects of this system software update, the amount of people you can add to your PSN friends list has been doubled, to 100.

The update also adds a mini-control panel that you can use while playing music and an internet search feature powered by Google that allows you to initiate search directly from the XMB (similar to what we added to the PSP recently). In addition, when you’re using the XMB or accessing the XMB from in-game, the current time and date will be displayed in the upper right hand corner. There are a few more minor enhancements included in this update, once the update is live you’ll be able to read about them here.

Firmware v2.40 will become available for download on July 2nd. We hope you enjoy these much-requested features, and look forward to your feedback.

  • MGS4 needs to have Trophies!

As a matter of fact, that list isn’t very long for trophy support.

Do we have to go through our old games again to earn the trophies, or can automatically get our trophies according to the saves we have?

  • Eric/Jeff,

Can you tell us if we’ll be able to display and view these Trophies and compare them with other gamers outside of the console e.g. our gamercards show next to our PSN ID’s on forums and such?

  • So does this go live ion July 2 N. America or July 2 in Japan? Because if it is the latte rthen that would be Tuesday not Wednesday, if the former then it will be Wednesday. I just wish you folks would make it live tonight. Also just wanted to let you know that CFW 4.01 for the psp has been released not a week after you guys put out the official one. I want to know why security on the PSP is so LAX? I also have an idea to help combat the piracy that happens with the PSP. RFID embedded UMD Cases that do an online check with your servers to make sure that an actual game has been inserted into the PSP.

Anyways can’t wait for 2.40 and to have the blog going back to half normal. Because you know what the next thing the whiners are going to start on about. Yes: HOME.

  • oh yeah FREE TIBET!

  • Not sure about this, we’ll have to wait and see if it’s worth messing with.

  • Apparently it’s been confirmed you’ll have to play games again to get the trophies.
Makes complete sense to me. Otherwise people will cheat.

  • Thank you!

  • YEAH!!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH ERIC AND THE REST OF THE PSN TEAM!!!

  • thank you once again cant wait until june 2nd thanks to all the memebers at sony who make this possible

  • Thank you once again for the a video walkthrough of firmware 2.40.

  • Good stuff, Music and messaging was the main thing but this makes it even better!

  • Holy ships! This is great news. I’m really looking forward to this update.

  • YES! This is massively awesome! Sony has done good by me! Of course, how well this trophy system succeeds within the community is almost entirely dependent on how fast they role out the games that will support trophies. I hope that they get these going quickly and there are a lot so people don’t feel like there is a massive gap of titles in the trophy system. MANDATE TROPHY SUPPORT SONY!

  • Looking at the list of games that will be compatible was totally a buzz kill. They’re not being retrofitted into any past games besides Warhawk, PAIN, and Super Stardust HD? I remember that Naughty Dog said that Uncharted would have trophy support. I suppose people would be able to cheat the system, but still.

  • THIS IS PS TRIPLE, BABE!!!

  • I hope you guys have your servers properly serviced as they are going to take A MAJOR hit come the 2nd.

    Good Job.

  • This update is going to be available for download the week of E3. That’s why they are showing the video previews in parts. So I’m guessing every week there will be a new video update.

They are going to stretch this 2.40 update news until the week of E3.

  • @163,

Those are only Sony’s first party games known to date. I’m positive other games will jump on and soon have Trophy support, and 3rd parties are still yet to detail their plans for them. I just hope Sony make Trophies mandatory for future games, because I know the lazy @sses at EA won’t give us a thing if it isn’t required.

  • Mr. Lempel, I can imagine how good it felt to make these videos an be like “You said you wanted it NOW BAM! We Delivered!”

Fantastic. Utterly Awesome. We all appreciate the community interaction this blog provides and are all firm Sony supporters. Thank you again.

NOW GET SOME PATCHS OUT 3RD and 1ST PARTY DEVS!! WOOOOT

  • @ 166 the update is coming wendsday nt the of e3 and there r only two videos

  • Looks great I cant wait for the 2nd :D.

  • wow Thx, but waht about PSN CARDS !!!!!!!

  • July 2nd? Whre does it say this?

  • NVM, i should read sometimes.

  • Great news, Keep up the good work!

  • takes far to many buttons and menus to reply or messege anyone, are you afraid of using a AOL/MSN/ICQ style “friends bar”? or is this touching vs pc issue? or using too much of the small amount of memory the ps3 already has? :o

ease of communication is key for ps3’s future online. home is far from easy :P

  • Are the trophies just going to show up for achievements that u have from this point on? or from when u started the game?

  • Eric/Jeff,

    – Apparently in-game voice chat won’t be supported. This is a very important feature to me and (as shown by the comments) many others. It was actually what I was most looking forward to from in-game XMB. Can we expect to see this feature added in the future? Why isn’t it included now?

    – Information around the net is claiming that trophies are not retrospective. So if a game is patched to support trophies, will none of our previous gameplay be considered? Also, what steps (if any) are you guys going to take to prevent exploitation through shared saves?

  • Nice update, I think sony should make it to where the Trophies give you points toward the purchase of something from the playstation store.

  • What are the chances of the trophy system being enhanced with the release of Home? At the moment, this just seems like a slightly more polished version of the 360’s achievement system. But Home could really add a new level to the trophy system.

Imagine gold and platinum trophies unlocking unique items for your Home. Example: Maybe a platinum trophy for MGS4 gives you an Arcade machine in your Home that plays the NES Metal Gear game. Or a gold trophy in Gran Turismo gives you a remote control race car. Or a gold trophy in Little Big Planet gives you stuffed animals of the characters.

  • @ 163, 167

Yeah trophy should be compulsory for all games like the 360 (well in that case achievements). We would then see games with and without trophies which would suck especially if the popular or good quality games weren’t trophy supported. If I were working at Sony, lol (going a bit overboard) but still I would make things compulsory for developers.

  • Hi eric.

Will you guys have a dedicated website [like xbox.com] where i can go online and view all the trophies I’ve unlocked or a place to view trophies that can be unlocked for any old/future games?

  • Yay, July 2nd it is. Thank you god! Wed cant come fast enough this week.

  • Sweeeeeeettt! =D

  • Who made the rating go down to 4.92?
    Are you guys NUTS?
    This is HUGE!

Still want in game voice chat though! =)

Nice work Sony this is going to ROCK!
Thanks for the release date you guys OWN!

  • I guess this cannot be backdated to games that have already been played? For instance, if Konami decides to add support to MGS4, do we have to start the game over?

Also, shouldn’t this be a required addition to all games, much like Microsoft has for their games and the Achievements system?

  • @180:
I think their actions against game sharing cheats is to ensure that you have to play the games again to unlock trophies… I’ve read somewhere that it’s confirmed that this is the case.
I guess games like Warhawk are different though.. I hope they work out a way of making it as simple as possible

  • Man this is 100% better then the crap box 3suxD a.p. system! I love how you have set how many trophy’s a game of set size can have. So none of that, this game has 3 hard as hell trophy’s and this one has 1000 easy one’s. Like we see on the crap box.

And the ability to look and compare with your friends trophy’s is top notch stuff!

I’m soo glad you guys take your time and do things right the first time.
Instead of rushing to market with melting hardware and half executed ideas…..

  • Wait, what’s this I hear about trophies not being retroactive? I have to 100% GTA IV again? Are you kidding me? That is just plain ridiculous, Sony.

  • Wow awesome guys. Glad it’s going to be here very soon. Wednesday can’t come soon enough lol.

  • gah — guys who cares if you have to replay games to get trophies… i think weather games have trophies or not is more important…

From what i have been reading on the internet (PS3Fanboy, Gamespot, neogaf, etc.) it looks like trophy implementation is up to developers… and let me tell you something — that is bad news… Trophy support in games should NOT be a huge deal. It should be expected from future releases…

Also i heard custom music in-game is also up to the developer… if so I’m really pissed off… please don’t tell me that 2.40 is just “we added interfaces to systems we already had in place”… custom soundtracks have been apart of PS3 for over a YEAR… but it was optional for developers– now look at how many games support them…
Voice chat is optional.. how many support it ? … i can go on and on like this.

In the end, to sum up this little rant — Quit sucking up to developers and tell them they need to add Trophies in their games! They need to add Custom soundtracks ! Microsoft does it and Microsoft is praised for it – by consumers AND developers – and its about time SONY caught up with the competition…

  • If they were retroactive, I could download a 100% save game from the internet and unlock all the trophies for myself without even playing the game.
Seems fair enough to me. I enjoy playing games anyway, it’s not a particularly unpleasant task.

  • YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

  • Honestly, though very painstaking, I would rather go through my old games again to gather trophies than have a system with loopholes in it that would allow for exploitation.

  • @192

At least we have the date of when its released and is very close by. Why are firmware SOMETIMES more intriguing then game releases, lol.
YAY, playstation blog should of added a count down timer for the firmware, hehe.

  • Awesome :) Keep up the good work!

This may sound stupid, but I think we need more PS3 avatars. 5 people on my friends list have the same avatar as Jeff.

  • @189 “I’ve read somewhere that it’s confirmed that this is the case.”

Can you tell us where you read this?
Because it sounds a lil bit like you just made this up to start a rumor.
