Firmware (v.2.40) Walkthrough Part 2: Trophies

570 0

Hello again, everyone! Very recently, we demonstrated a major new function enabled in PLAYSTATION 3 firmware v2.40: XMB access in-game. But that’s only part of the story, as the next system software update also introduces the Trophy system to the PS3. This video demonstration shows the system in action.

Super Stardust HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released in June 2007, will be the first game to leverage Trophies and will offer a variety of trophies. Trophy support in Super Stardust HD will be available for first-time users who purchase the game soon after firmware v2.40 is released, while those who previously purchased and downloaded the title will be prompted to install a free patch.

PS3 users can expect to see additional games bringing Trophies support to their feature sets through 2008 and beyond, providing even greater opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and compete with friends. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:

  • BUZZ! Quiz TV
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • MotorStorm Pacific Rift
  • NBA 09 – PS3
  • PAIN
  • PixelJunk Eden
  • Resistance 2
  • SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
  • Warhawk

To further emphasize the community aspects of this system software update, the amount of people you can add to your PSN friends list has been doubled, to 100.

The update also adds a mini-control panel that you can use while playing music and an internet search feature powered by Google that allows you to initiate search directly from the XMB (similar to what we added to the PSP recently). In addition, when you’re using the XMB or accessing the XMB from in-game, the current time and date will be displayed in the upper right hand corner. There are a few more minor enhancements included in this update, once the update is live you’ll be able to read about them here.

Firmware v2.40 will become available for download on July 2nd. We hope you enjoy these much-requested features, and look forward to your feedback.

  • Best Firmware ever!!! And ist on my Birthday :-D

  • What about older titles? will every 3rd party be made to make trophies for new games coming out?

    I hope so.

  • Will there be a website setup that makes it possible to view our trophies and compare with other PS3 owners online?

  • Eric,

One more question… Will there be more updates in the span of the PS3’s Life? In game voice chatting would be great, Chat rooms, in game access to the Internet browser, Flash player updated!!! PLEASE!

    Thank you!

  • Finally! I’m so Happy to get an actual date than getting the update! Thank You!

    But I have questions…

    1. Will the Internet Browser be available while in-game, if one brought up the xmb?

    2. (For Future firmware) Might we be able to record in-game play? Like somehow use a modified version of the PS3 EyeCreate?

    3. Now I’m really lost with the whole trophies and the leveling up part. What’s the point of leveling up? Are there rewards, such as PS Store credit? If there are not rewards, I don’t really see the point of adding “levels” to the trophies.

    4. Now when the video was at the part about “gamercards” and the 3 different area to can look through, the video talked about the languages that you can speak and how it can come in handy, well that is already available on the current profile view on the PSN, why bring that up?

    5. I’ve notice when I press the PS button on my controller (of course I don’t have 2.40) it takes me to the default (Quit Game, Turn off System, ect..) and it pauses my game for me, why wont 2.40 in-game xmb pause the game?

    6. When on the xmb while in-game, can I switch users if I’m not online with the game?

    7. Now the video #1 said that I can view my downloads while in-game on the xmb. Will the downloads download? I’m curious because currently when I go and play a game online, my downloads stop, and don’t pickup till after I quit the game. So I guess the better question is, can I still download while playing online or will the download when I’m just playing single player offline?

    8. And the last question from me. Do you have any current plans for updates after 2.40 that better the in-game xmb? Or after this update will you shift your attention to soon to be bigger issues (after 2.40), like a better internet browser?

  • Whoa! While it’s been a long wait, I have to say — this is more than worth the wait! I’m on vacation and brought one of my PS3s just in case v2.40 came out while I was gone, I’m glad I did!

  • it’s said that current saved games will not unlock trophies until they’re patched correct?

But what about Uncharted: Drakes Fortune and Dark Sector and many others that already have trophies built in, will these have to be patched?

And I have 1000/1000 on Uncharted, are you saying I’ll have to play through Uncharted again to unlock my trophies? (of course I won’t mind playing Uncharted again, it’s a great game)

  • Add this to FAQ Please:

    1. Will developers of future PS3 titles (both PSN games and Blu-ray based titles) be FORCED to implement all features of 2.40 (trophies, custom soundtracks etc.)

    2. Will trophies be linked to your PLAYSTATION NETWORK ID? (For example: I have a second PS3. I want to know if when I log in there, will my trophies be there? And will my friends be able to see them when im logged in on my second system.)

  • I hear the ” When is HOME going to be released” question is going to be the next hot topic on the site.

    :D

  • Jeff i have a question and i would like you to add it to your FAQ if you could please.

Will the PSP ever get these features in the future?

I feel like the PSP is being neglected by Sony

I dont have a PS3, but i love the update and your overall commitment to Playstation, but i feel as though the PSP doesnt get the same features the PS3 gets.

    Please respond
    Thanks!

  • beautiful…. I love the presentation and think it’s perfect. Certainly well thought out and designed…

  • The July issue of Official PlayStation Magazine UK states that:

“PlayStation 3 achievements – called ‘trophies’ – will be unveiled soon (this bit we already know, but here’s the interesting bit), and 70% of games will already be compatible.”

    Jeff Can you PLEASE COMMENT.

  • I love the trophy system, the gamercard seems kinda plain, but is awesome.

  • 2 Questions.

Does 2.4 support cross game invites or is that feature being saved for Home?

Is voice chat available from the XMB while in game?

  • i know this doesn’t have much to do with the 2.4 update. but it has to do with purchases from the psn. games are 1.99$ and such, so we spend that and end up with .01 in our ‘wallet’s and such. that kinda wastes our money, so wouldn’t it be better if games were 2.00$ or maybe after buying so many games we get some type of rewards? like getting a free download for anything under 9.99$ or something, just a suggestion. ^^

  • One more question.

Can the profiles/trophies of other people be viewed/compared while in game?

  • I imagine MGS4 will have trophies patched into it, but this brings my to my main question of:

Will trophies unlocked previously be given to the player or will we have to replay the game to earn the trophies?

Reason I ask is because I already got 40/40 emblems in MGS4 and it took quite awhile (had to beat it 8 times) so I really don’t want to do it again, and I wouldn’t do it again. So I think trophies already earned should just be given immediately.

  • Sorry if someone has asked this before, but do you know anything about specific 3rd party titles that will get trophy support? And will Uncharted get trophy support? If it will, I will get extremely happy as it would be a reason for me to play that wonderful game again.

Anyway, looking forward to wednesday now. This is going to be the best FW-update ever.

  • Thank goodness you guys finally made a really good update. The clock has been necessary for a long time and the music and XMB features are really good too but will they be accessible in PS2 and PS1 games as well as PS3 games? And have you guys finally updated the Flash player to a decent version (at least 8.0)? And does it have speed up and slow down features like the PSP? You should have just made this 3.0.

  • This is awesome. Really looking forward to it!

  • damn, apparently 2.40 also updates your tv. good, glad this is dropping. will put a few people in check for sure. word up.

  • @410 so true!

    On topic:

I think this will make gamers play their PS3s ten times more, and Sony had better get the developers to support it IE games like the fallowing need to support the PS3 fully that don’t right now:

Call of Duty: 4 (Lacks both DualShock3 support, and now trophies/IN-GAME XMB) Plus the developers claimed that the PS3 dev kit was utter trash I think you should get on their butts and tell them if they don’t support the PS3s new additions they will not be allowed to make games on the PS3 at all.

Battlefield: Bad Company (Not only dose this game have bad mic support for the PS3s BT headsets/USB headsets, but it now also lacks Trophy support, and IN-GAME XMB support as well EA I think will be quick to fix this but let em know please! As fare as shooter games go this would increase PSN users bhy a huge number if they could get trophies and increase in rank online as well)

Burnout: Paradise (This game is doing vary well on the PS3 as of now, and I can’t think of another raceing title that would be more fun then Burnout Paradise with Trophy support!)

Rock Band (This is yet another major seller on the PS3 that would do vary well to have trophy support added and soon! Rock Star better get on it!)

Grand Theft Auto: 5 (This is a major killer app game for the PS3, but it has major issues! it dose not instal correctly, it lags like hell in online mode, and on top of that now it lacks trophie support. If GTA is to be a major flag ship for Sony, then they best get the developer to support trophies and fix the problems as well as quit dogeing the issues by claiming it was not their fault) Note: Rock Star claimed they planted the wrong installer in the BD version of the game and I think that warrants a recal of the title and a major investagation! Check Slashdot.com for that news bit!

  • everyone check out IGNs article. it has a lot of these questions answered.

  • very nicely done Sony.,I can’t wait for the update, man about time with the XMB clock !! lol, good job.

  • @423

Thats would be dumb if they aren’t allowed to make PS3 games anymore. That will only hurt the gamers.

  • I hope this level thing turns into something greater, maybe you Sony guys have already planed on this, but heres an idea; why not at a certain level say level 20 you get to choose a different pallet for your player profile(the current one isn’t as flashy for my tasts). Or other things, make it so we are working towards a cetain level so we get an additional award.

Im all for leveling up , but at the end of the day its just a number unless theres something in between to make me want to keep going.

  • I hope that HOME Beta comes out for the masses. The trophy system would probably look a lot better in that 3D environment. It is good to finally have in game XMB access for texting and other stuff but what about XMB chat. I still believe Sony and the PS3 is capable of including such a feature just like the xbox360, which is not suppose to be a superior system to the PS3. I remember reading an article where Sony boasts about its engineers and they themselves even spoke about discovering new ways to work the PS3. Please try to include XMB chat without the confinement of the chat room. Thank you.

  • I bought my PS3 approximately 3 months after launch. Everyday after I get out of work I go through forums and news sites just to cheack out what’s new. Everyday I saw people post good things about the Playstion 3 and bad things about the Playstation 3. And through it all I kept my opinions to myself. I kept my mouth shut.

But now, now is when I created an account on this blog. Strictly just to post this comment.

I own an Xbox 360. Its in my brother’s room. I hardly play it. The games I liked where always on the PS3, and the free internet gaming was only on the PS3.

But people talked so bad about it. It didn’t measure up to the Xbox because it lacked in-game music. in-game communication. in-game XMB… And in one swift blow, one single update, all those voices where all shut out.

Personally the “Gamerscore” concept was never really for me. The numbers where too static. 123,000 points for you, 235,037 for me. It didn’t catch my attention. But TROPHIES, actual objects, Bronze, Silver, Gold, THAT sounds like something I can really get into. They took the “Gamerscore” concept and gave it LIFE. That along with Home, I can forsee a lot of happy campers.

Overnight the Playstation 3 will take LEAPS past the competition in terms of features and functionality.

I can truly now say that with this firmware update the Playstation 3 will finally be complete. Anything that comes after this is bonus. And I personally want to thank everyone that made this happen. Thank you.

    Laters.

1- Most games include the option to adjust the games sound effects, music, and sometimes even dialog. So you can manually turn down the games music, and keep the sound effects on, etc. But future titles most likely WILL be able to make it where whenever you select a song from the XMB to play, the games music/dialog will automatically mute itself. Not a big deal either way though.

2- PS Store and Internet Browser access won’t be possible in-game, but I do see them adding those later down the line. This is only step one to this feature, I am sure.

3- Yeah, I realized that too lol, was wondering why Eric said that, but I dunno maybe just to remind people it’s there! XD

4- I agree, most updates sometimes are just fixing behind the scenes glitches or errors that hackers and such can take advantage of. And they most likely didn’t talk about the upping of the friends list, because they were hoping no one would realize until 2.4 came out! :P Oh and for YouTube in-game uploading, why would they say something about that when essentially no games support it yet? Just to get people hyped for nothing.

5- Well the entire XMB can be pulled up when listening to music, watching a video, viewing photos, and using the internet browser, but not everything is accessible. This is no different. Later down the line I am sure they will extend it though, adding in-movie XMB, etc.

6- Once the game is patched to support trophies, you will need to play the game again to earn the trophies. Unless it is an online game, or the online trophies. Thsoe stats are in the PSN users account, not the game save like single player games.

7- For some reason I doubt music over a media server will work. Also, copying files probably won’t work, even when listening to music, watching a video, or viewing a photos, the option to copy a file is blocked out.

8- Well it is much quicker then loading up the browser, going to google, typing your search, loading it again, etc. This is just, X, type your search, X, loading, and bam. Rather then X, loading, type in the site, loading, type in the search, loading, etc.

9- Voice Chat isn’t in 2.4, but I am almost 100% sure they will add it later down the line.

10- The trophy system is quite a great advancement and a unique take on the achievement system, I am not the only one to think this either (ie IGN, PS3fanboy, users, etc). I am sure they will add some kind of reward system tied into home, like unlocking a special outfit of Ratchet, if you get all the trophies for the game (or platinum trophy for the game).

That’s my answer to you bro!

  • @ 423 ITS GTA4

  • Sweet it’s out Wednesday sooner than I thought…:-)

  • nice!!!! simple ,but elegant looking, thanks Sony.now time to get that Platinum trophies playas !!!! lol.

  • Sony,

Make the trophies retroactive. Just connect all save files to the machine before you do the update. Then award trophies to the thousands of players who do not wish to play all of their games over again. It can’t be that hard, can it? Just connect the existing game saves and all future saves to the psn ID. I am not going to get the Big Boss emblem (MGS4) again because Sony says that I don’t deserve it because I bought and beat this game before they could get their multiply delayed trophy system up and running.

Sony, stop being lazy and make the trophies retroactive. I understand your reasoning but who cares if cheaters get a trophy? Don’t ruin this for the people who honestly achieved the goal and deserve the reward.

  • Oh and Sony it’s about time you stop putting things such as Google search in xmb as if we spend time searching for stuff. Why have you not refined the PS3s browser. Update its flash profile. We do not need a google search outside the browser. Maybe you guys could ask Google to create a better browser for the PS3 and include a Google bar.

  • @ 426

Well what else can Sony do? Activison has given the PS3 version of Call of Duty 4 the short end of the stick IMHO. Even the PC version works better, and supports all manner of items for Vista64bit, and Windows XP.

I’m just tossing ideas around. The developers need to stop calling out fowl on Sony and start takeing responsabilities for their fowl ups, and misshaps with a system they never developed on before.

Sony developers have no issues, Sony has 24/7 tech support for the third party developers, and on top of that half of them don’t use it.

It’s why the PS3 got so many crapy ports before this year. I can think of quite a few games that should of never been released in their condition:

RainbowSix Vagus 1/2: Why? because the PS3 version has major FPS problems. So bad in fact that the game lags like a crap cake in combat. Sure it has more land scape that can be destroyed but if they can’t get the game to work and run smooth then why bother? Granted 2 was ten times better then the first one that was a straight port to the PS3 of the Xbox360 version.

Enemy Territory Quake Wars: A major fail IMHO and most reviewers. Though both console versions suck big time the PS3 version again has FPS problems, and texture issues, on top of all that the graphics for the game were dropped down on both consoles to the point where it looks like it’s runing on a PC in low GFX mode with little to no texture detail.

GTA:5 This game had a great selling rate and made a huge amount of cash thats true. But the fact that Rock Star gave the BD version the wrong installer, and anybody with a launch 60GB PS3 gets the short end of the stick is not acceptable. The Xbox360 version may have less issues, but both versions lag online, and the PS3 version can’t even instal correctly on 4% of PS3s. How a game like that did not get a recal is beyond me.

  • May have already been asked but, Will developers be required to incorporate trophy support in all games? From what date forward will this go into effect? If it’s not already a mandate, can you mandate it? You would think that with as big a selling point as they are, you could use that selling point in your memo to developers :) Thanks for the soon to come FAQ’s on FW 2.40.

  • Are the trophies going to been seen in only 2D, or can it be seen in 3D like the HOME video?

  • i wanna listen to my own music while i play rock band lmao jk ok here it goes Voice chat while playing a Game is gonna be the next most requested. so may yall think about adding this feature after 2.40 it doest say its inculded but it doesnt say its not. idk but im gald its finaly here thanks everyone a SCEA thanks

  • Sony,

Please reconsider making the trophies retroactive. Just connect all save files to the machine before you do the update. Then award trophies to the thousands of players who have already completed the requirements. It can’t be that hard, can it? Just connect the existing game saves and all future saves to the psn ID.

For example: I am not going to get the Big Boss emblem (MGS4) again because Sony says that I don’t deserve it because since I bought and beat the game before they could get their often-delayed trophy system up and running.

I understand your reasoning but who cares if cheaters get a trophy? Don’t ruin this for the people who honestly achieved the goal and deserve the reward. Don’t do this for loyal fans who don’t have the time or the will to replay every game to achieve what if rightly theirs.

    Thanks,
    Darren

  • I tried going through all these comments, but couldn’t manage it to read each one to see if this question was asked. I’m hoping to get this answered in the FAQ?

About the music in-game. I noticed it was said you turned down the music soundtrack to hear it. How well is the music implemented, will all games need to have it turned down, or (hopefully) can it replace the game soundtrack, to where you can still hear the cutscenes, and the sounds of the game?

I wouldn’t like the music to drown out all the noises, soundtrack, and (especially) cutscenes. Only replace the soundtrack.

Thanks in advance for the answers, and the great job you all are doing!

  • One more thing I forgot….These patches for games to have trophies, will they be available for download from the PS Store? Or will the game just prompt you when you load the game, and will it say something like “Update for Trophy Support” so we’ll know that’s what the update contains?

  • DAMN everyones asking the same questions OVER AND OVER again!!

    Seriously, here is an FAQ, people, copy paste this to anyone who may ask the same question over and over again;

Will the Internet Browser or PlayStation Store be accessible while in-game?

No, you will be asked if you would like to quit the game to access these features. These will most likely be added in the future though.

Will I have to play my game over again to get the trophies for it?

Once the game is patched to support trophies, you will need to play the game again to earn the trophies. Unless it is an online game, or the online trophies. Thsoe stats are in the PSN users account, not the game save like single player games.

Is the Voice Chat feature accessible in-game?

No, you will be asked to quit the game to access the feature. Though this feature will be added in at a later point.

Will MGS4 get trophies? What about GTA IV? And Uncharted? etc.

It’s up to the developers, but we can assume that most titles will get a patch later on to support it though. Rest assured that most if not all major future releases will have trophy support from day one. And by 09, it will become mandatory for all games.

Will we be able to access the XMB in-game when playing a PlayStation, or PlayStation 2 game? How about when watching a movie?

No, but in the future it will be, if there is a user demand for it.

How will trophies effect Home when launched?

Some Trophies will get 3D representations, depending on the title. Though any game can be patched, even now, to have 3D trophies for Home.

Anything else I need to add to this list? …

  • @441 LtPliskin01
he ,your proposal defeat all the purpouse of the trophies ,anyway , you are not forced to re start your MGS4 (love that),so dont worry you are not forced to replay your games.

  • Does the trophy data save on the PSN servers or on the console itself? For example, if my HDD was to become corrupted, would I be able to retrieve the Trophy data from the PSN servers? Thank you.

  • I hate that Playstation went to a “trophies/gamerscore” Xbox rip off! We see people stat pad and cheat in games to get higher ranks… I can just imagine all the B.S. that’s going to happen to increase gamerscores or the childish “I’m a better gamer than you are” stuff that’s going to happen.

I just hope you have an option to turn off the trophy system… some gamer privacy should be maintained. Maybe I don’t want all my buddies, random strangers or serious clan mates to know I play a particular game like “Free Realms” or the upcoming Leisure Suit Larry game!
… Love the ingame access to messages though!

  • Please let me use my PS3 cam for my profile picture!

  • On another website I read that 70% of all Playstation 3 games will be compatible with the trophy system when 2.40 launches.

If this is true, and a number of my games are compatible, will I have to replay each game to get those trophies or will somthing be done with my save file. Perhaps a game update?

    -Thanks

  • NnoooOoooooooo! No MGS4! Blasphemy!

  • Resistance 1
    COD4
    GTA4

can we please get trophies for these?

    cant wait for the update!
