As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.
If you did a successful install you are fine, I install last night around 8:45PM Mountain Time and loved it.
The in-game XMB moves slow at first but its no problem if you installed it ok the first time.
Everyone clam down, this problem has affect a small and repeat that small percentage of PS3 owners and you don’t know what they had on there systems to begin with it, corrupt data can cause a brick that is for sure.
Don’t fear, I bet 2.41 firmware will be up in about a day or so for all you worried about this.

mine works just fine.. installed 2.40 successfully and rather quickly just after midnight Tuesday nite… and first game to received update was Stardust, thus i tried it out.. also tried Pain, tho no trophies there.. i would expect the downloadable games be fairly quick(and easier) to receive this trophy system in a patch.. i can wait.. wasnt in any hurry anyway..
and thumbs down to any of those whiners who decided to complain about it missing this or that.. those guys need to turn their PS3s in and go play somewhere else..
I had my PS3 on for over 10 hours after I downloaded the update and I didn’t experience any issues at all.
Whatever is causing this mess, I hope you guys address it soon so as anyone can enjoy the new features!

my install was fine and my firmware is excellent
60GB PS3. Downloaded and installed 2.4 this morning around 9 or 10 O’clock. Booted up fine immediately after update. Started Super Stardust HD just to get the trophies installed, then quit back to XMB once the update was complete. Checked out what trophies were available for Super Stardust HD but didn’t have time to actually play cuz I had to get ready for work. Now I’m going to go give a few trophies a try on Super Stardust HD
Update works fine on my older 80G.
It amazes me how many people panic and get hysterical without reading all the facts.
I do count myself lucky though. :D
Hmm, mine went through just fine.
But I did experience a lot of difficulty updating Super Star Dust, my system kept shutting off and restarting.
Whether this was due to 2.4 I don’t know.
I’m happy with it, i just want to see developers make the most out of it.
Custom Soundtracks for Oblivion, Pixel Junk Monsters, WWE, all racing titles and well…everything else would be appreciated.
Is it possible to update us on games as new features are added, so we don’t have to guess at it?

What happens even when you fix the update to the people’s ps3’s that do not even work anymore because of the corrupt update?

I just wanna know if this firmware is going to be back online tonight at the latest, I had to wait all day before I went to update it and what do I get when I get online….BAM!!! this blog. Anyways I understand the problem I just dont wanna wait till tommorrow I have to take my PS3 to my gf house cause I dont have high speed…..anyways I am done venting sorry.

I am guessing the problems start at random, slowing two or five people got a bricked system and complained online and knowing the internet it got blown out of the water.
Other then some bugs like slowly or glitchlyness its fine, I love the clock now.
So lemme get this straight:
If I already downloaded and installed v2.40 and it worked fine, I have nothing to worry about right?

I have a launch system (60gig), I installed the update at 4:55 EST and have not had any problems. All the features work perfectly.
Launch 60GB here…no problems after the update. Downloaded and updated 6AM EDST.
I did the update and after it, I´ve played Rock Band, NBA2K8, GT5P, PES2008 and MGS4 without any problems. I´m playing for almost 8/10 hours without any problem these games.

ZOMG guys! Give them a break. S*** happens…I too was excited to get the update when I saw that there is none. It doesn’t mean you have to take it out on Sony :P
Any way I can download a patch for SSHD on the PC? I did the same with FW 2.4, since my PS3 is not able to get online at the moment (no internet connection). Have a feeling that isn’t even possible, but damn I wish I could play SSHD and get them trophies already!
A lot of the news is definitely overblown and that makes it very hard to honestly know who is telling the truth when you have people who don’t even have PS3s reporting that it killed their non-existent system.
Of course I’m not saying it doesn’t effect a lot of people. It’s just hard to decipher who is being lame and who isn’t.
As for me, no issues. Got 11 trophies and I’m playing Puzzle Fighter right now.
May I please have the ability to remove date and time? It’s nice to have the feature but it would be nicer if I were able to disable it as well.
And I am not, just would like an idea when I can see this thing back up…….

I have an 80g. Downloaded this morning( made me late for work, lol). I have only tried warhawk, but 2.40 seem to be doing what it was suposeto do. Sorry to hear that some people have had some trouble.
I do have a question thouigh, trophies for warhawk. When will they be ready. I have also down loaded broken mirror and omega dawn, where are these saved, will I lose them if I delete my game save to start over to take advantage of the trophies from the begining of the game? Restarting the game really is not that big af a deal I am only a Chief Srgt.( I am really not very good at the game, but getting better.

I have a 60GB model.
I downloaded/installed the update about 7am this morning. Everything works fine except PS2 games. I put in a game and start it up. Black screen, buttons, PS button on remote, nothing works. I have to hold down the power button on console to turn off.
PS3 and PSone games work just fine? Any other 60GB owner that has no problems starting up try any PS2 games??

The warhawk pacth will be released with warhawk update 1.5 which will be released in August, with a probably booster as well.
Hope they get it fixed soon, bought my PS3 2 days ago cus of MG4, have to say….. they did not let me down, the game is just amazing. Though it would be the only game i would play on ps3 but now that i see some of the newer games that r coming for just PS3 and not xbox well ima start buying ps3 games…. sony keep getting pro games for ur console only. Dont know what happened with GTA but w/e i know u still have more great games exclusively for the ps3. Keep up the good work… oh… blueray owns =-P

I updated to 2.40 last night around 12:00AM EST. Everything works great for me! I downloaded Super Stardust HD and I must say the trophies are awesome!
I successfully installed my update but when ever I bring up the XMB and click my music it says that “music can not be played while in use of this game”
anyone else?

An interesting thing I noticed while playing around with the new firmware was the new cards that pop up when you select someone in your friends list.
I have a suggestion regarding this. There are currently three options available on this screen (new message, compare trophies, and start new chat), I think an option to look at the most recent message received (or the whole message list) would be an excellent add on.

For all the guys who are thinking that Sony didn’t test the patch:
Wake up!!! If there’s a problem, it’s because of one of the greatest thing this console is giving us, which is customization.
They have tested it inside out on all their SKU for sure. You won’t find one person saying he just bought a PS3 and the patch didn’t work. Why? Because all the hardware is the same. You don’t have a different sound card, you don’t have a different graphic card, you don’t have more memory. THE HARDWARE IS THE SAME ALL OVER.
So people who have problems are likely the ones with strange homemade theme background. Or those funky avatars coming from out of space. Maybe some save game trading going south because of some hidden ID no longer working. Or who knows what. Basically, something that Sony could not have tested in-house because there’s so many of them now. People want to be able to customize their PS3, well, that’s quite likely the problem right now.
You could not customize previous consoles like that. Testing a few SKU only take so long, but testing so many possible variations? Good luck.
Could not download it, but since I’m using only Sony’s theme and Sony’s avatars, and so on, I would do it on a dime right now, knowing well that it would not hurt my console.
I am extremely ticked off at SONY!!!!!! We finally get this Freaking update & I can’t play any Music during game play!!!!! Why oh why does sony always mess up on us fans, if this update is not fixed emidiately I will trade in my PS3 for good….. I have several Titles for the PS3 old & new like: Metal Gear Solid 4/ Uncharted/ Devil May Cry 4/ GTA 4/ Resistance Fall Of Man/ & over 11 PSN games witch give me a total of 16 Titles. All were unable to play music from my hard drive!!! Fix it SONY, if XBOX 360 can why can’t you?????????

I own that model the 60gb bought from launch, and yes I can play all my ps1/ps2 games perfectly.
Also the PS STORE seems to be running faster.

Sony didnt mess anything up, microsoft did. They have a patent for in game music.If you want it send a freaking email to all the PS3 devs.
I downloaded it last night and it locked up after installing so I held the ps button and shut it down from that menu. Started up just fine afterwards.
I would assume some individuals pulled the plug or pressed the button in the back. Always use the ps button to shutdown or hold the power button in the front if you have to. Never respond to a a frozen system by cutting the power via the pulling the plug or the power supply button in the back.
after restarting my ps3 a couple times between last night and today, it’s all good in the hood.
in fact, i’ve reached level 2 trophy hunting already. :) good thing SSD HD has custom soundtracks already. now, how about some updates as to when and what games will support this. like tomorrows update of the store, will there be any trophy games aside from SSD HD then? also, when will the next installment of qore arrive?
Well… Get it fixed… I do not want to install 2.41 over again when my firmware is working… How about a minor update and a complete update?! Instead of having to make the whole update compatible, use minor updates! Look man… I have a friggin DSL line that promises about 786kbps… All I get is 36 and lower KBs…. I do not want to download another complete update! I want a minor update!
I’ve had no problems, save Super Stardust HD having trouble updating, but even that eventually got through. Still, I’m glad SCE is being so proactive in the situation. :D
I’m getting plenty of use out of the messaging, though I’d really like to be able to disable that typing shortcut “Shift+Backspace= Delete All.” That thing has frustrated me after just one day.
I downloaded 2.4 and It works great. I have had no problems with it what so ever. And I have the 60gig model.
I think their just 360 fanboys making problems up to sabotage our beloved new update.
Yeah i got no problem with it. Still sad that i can’t listen to music in games without a patch for each game.

I agree, they should add an option in the ‘Date and Time Settings’ called something like ‘Date/Time Display’ -> Hide / Show / Show only when pressing the PS button.. How simple would that be?
OH and moving the controller info (battery life, controller port) to the bottom left when pressing the PS button.
