Firmware v2.40 status

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

  • all this time i was fine with 2.40, until about 10 minutes ago. it won’t recognize my external hdd anymore? this blows, how am i suppose to back up my system if the system doesn’t recognize the external attached to it. it worked fine before the update. i don’t regularly use the external either. i know it’s not the drive, i just transfered some new videos over to it to move to my ps3 today. my other hdd was working fine, but i just sold it and no longer have it… every problem everyone complained about has not effected me, but now this… i’m beside myself with anger now.

    I’ll bet with the traffic on their servers the last few days, they know they’ve got people interested…upset ? ya some…but lots are ok and patient.

    I said before, Sony could give us everything we asked for and you’d still have people complaining for more.

    yes i am sure it’s not the hdd, it’s formatted in fat32 and works fine with my pc. i tried restarting the ps3 before posting here. i even defraged the hdd, error checked, everything short of removing the files and reformatting it. guess that will be my next step then.

  • TheVesra…well if PS3 fanboy is right…2.41 may have the solution on Wednesday this week.

    If not, give Sony a call…maybe they can help.

    “CVG has contacted Sony Customer Support to find out exactly what is going on with 2.40. It’s all been very quiet since the firmware got pulled off the servers, but apparently a fixed version will be available “midweek.” Sony has yet to officially confirm that this is the case but, if true, they should do so within the next day or two. Hopefully 2.41 will fix any of the issues that were present in 2.40. We’ve had absolutely no problems so far, what about you? Let us know in our latest Poll Police post.”

  • WOW this Blog is a wasted land, no official statement yet, only rumors from third party sites, it’s a sad day when a third party site knows more on the status of the update than the Official Playstation Blog, it seems that is very “hard” for the guys who run the Blog to come here and post about the current status of the update, wow how pathetic SONY…

    I agree but, not over 2300 comments! This is mostly due to lack of response! The last few days it was cause they were on vacation, now what’s there excuse? And if PS3Fanboy could get an answer from customer support, can not we loyal fans of the PS3 hence receive a reply? I think not!

    I never could read an external HDD even before the update. my guess is that the ps3 does not like some types of HDD or maybe the enclosure.
    back to the point its funny that alot of sites already posted that 2.41 will come soon around midweek and here we are at the official blog we got nothing.

    You should see the SCEE forums, they NEVER get a response. Even when the SCEE mods themselves started a thread asking for suggestions and dialogue, the community responded with thousands of posts and nothing was ever heard of from SCEE.

    At least on this blog SCEA communicate with you guys – SCEE are incompetent muppets who are risking alienating the strong support for PS3 in Europe and, as the biggest market sales wise, this could have serious ramifications on Sony’s future presence in the console race.

    I agree. One can never be satisfied, unless… if my PS3 can make me pancakes every morning, I WILL be satisfied.

    For Patch 3.0, “I WANT MY PS3 TO MAKE ME PANCAKES!”

    But seriously, for ya’ll expecting a reply from Sony…
    This is by no means a tech support channel. Sony is not obligated to answer anything here. This is just a blog where ppl from all over post random comments (aka complaints) and/or share ideas.
    There’s probably no more than 3 (not 3000) poor saps working furiously (at least I hope they are) on this entire firmware issue with their supervisor(s) breathing down their backs who is also waiting for an update.
    Heck, one developer might still be on holiday!
    The second dev may have gone home early because his/her child is ill. Leaving the 3rd to fend for him/herself.

    Of course this is all speculation…
    But what else can we do in this “blog”?

  • sigh..whats with people now days? especially those xbots that come around running there mouth. Those people need to stay in there world.

    Anyways its my Birthday tomarrow(31)and Iam starting to think Iam getting to old for this nonsense :(. But then again this is the most exciting time for video games so I cant quit yet. Iam having a party on Saturday so if your in the area stop on by. BYOB (bring your own beer).

  • Geez, relax people.

    The midweek release of 2.41 is based on phone calls made to Sony’s technical support. It isn’t a definite date, which is most likely why there has been no “official announcement”.

    I would rather wait until Wednesday to hear that the firmware will definitely be released shortly than hear now that it will be out Wednesday and then for some reason that date slips to Thursday or Friday. Either way, people are going to complain. Better to err on the side of caution than to give out false promises.

    If you’re complaining because you don’t have trophy support yet, be happy you don’t have a bricked PS3.

    If you’re complaining because you have a bricked PS3, then my condolences. Hopefully Sony will sort you out quickly.

    I did get one of my 40GB units upgraded to 2.40 just fine. It’s the only one I had with me on vacation, so my other 40GB, 60GB and 80GB are all still 2.36. But at least they’re running, so I can play MGS4! :-)

  • scee are bad, im in the uk, no blogs to keep us updated, they hardly post to the forums and ringing sony customer support in the uk is a joke. I called them about my problems on friday (we dont have 4th july holiday) and some annoying person just told me ‘ we are aware of the problems’ and put the phone down. That was of course, being on hold for 25 mins. Your right tho, seeing as the ps3 is more popular in europe and very popular here in the uk compared to the other consoles, you would think they would tread carefully in europe, but seems not, also our psn store sucks compared to the us and japan ones. I do like sony, but their service in europe is bad.

    What IS necessary, is getting the correct information out when they actually have everything worked out and can actually give everyone useful information. What IS NOT necessary is to give you guys an update saying “we’re still working on it”, because that truly wouldn’t help the situation. You guys know they are working on it, Seybold made that perfectly clear.

  • I should have just bought a PS2, its built so well it have been out for 2 gens, i think the PS3 is the new dream cast, its going to make or break it for next gens system.

  • i would think they are working on it, if they didnt it would damage sony reputation so much, and they dont want that, so u can presume 100% they are working on it, just we have not updates on if they found the bugs and when they are planning on bringing the update out.

  • So with UT3 you can use a keyboard and mouse to play? What is that? Unreal Tournament 3?
    I thought it’d be from the OS not games. If it’s from the game support then i want Sony to push for all FPS games to have keyboard and mouse support. Controller only sucks.

    I also think Sony needs to have auto turn off the controller after 10 minutes of not being used. Saves battery and is only common sense that it needs to happen asap!

    I also want Sony to stop changing my theme. I have it on default and it always changes and i don’t want ot to change ever.

    I also feel in game XMB whatever it is is a joke and stupid.

  • Who cares about stupid Trophy support? Is it like Achievements on the 360? If so they just took the idea and call it something else. Not original, but it’s ok cus some might like it. i don’t. I couldn’t care less. They’re just stupid numbers that mean absolutely nothing.
    Total waste of time for consumers and developers.

    this external and another were both connected and working prior to this update. the other was working fine, but i sld it o make room for another using my old ps3 40 gig drive i recently replaced. the drive in question wasn’t on during the update. now it’s not being recognized at all.

    you would be in the minority on that. also, it is new, to the ps3. so 360 has had it, big deal. you do realize they are different systems and not everyone has both. its not stupid for consumers in any way. it actually could extend the life of a game. wouldn’t that be a plus to developers as well?
