Firmware v2.40 status

2,454 0

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

  • Sorry to hear all the people with frag’d systems. Glad I got mine when I did, and it seems to be doing just fine. A little bit sluggish running MGS4 and XMB, but still sweet nonetheless. Now for games to start implementing trophies…. …. …. …. ….

  • well I haven’t logged on since last night or this morning. and I was playing MGO and the in game XBM worked fine no problems installing.

  • V2.40 so far has been fine for me. I downloaded it and installed it shortly after 11 PM PDT last night…

Already started on those Super Stardust trophies!!!

  • well, with what games we can listen music and play at the same time???????? if someone know, please let me know

  • @haters

Just because in-game music is available, doesn’t mean it will work right away. Devs have to patch support for it into their game. Pester the game developer to add in-game music.

  • This is where the “locking down” of systems can appear irrational and somewhat irksome. Chances are if the ps3 were opened up some nerd could come up with a fix to this problem and post it, or one could just downgrade…

  • I fixed my system by replacing the hard drive with a new one. If you want, I’ll send you my broken hard drive if it will help figure out what the hell happened.

  • I updated the Firmware and now I can’t even get my system to boot up. Everytime I turn it on I get a message that tells me my “Hard Disk file is corrupted and will be restored”, I hit the ok button, it shows me a progress bar, restarts and then I get the same message again. Called support and they told me it would cost $149.00 to “fix” this problem.

For those of you for whom the system update went smoothly, you should feel blessed because the rest of us are now looking at a $499.00 paperweight if Sony doesn’t offer a solution.

  • I have one question:
I dont know if it has anything to do with a glitch or not but Eric described (In the first video tutorial)that the custom sountrack feature should work with most games directly from the in-game xmb. So far NONE work. Is that a bug or do games really have to be patched?

  • but all the games will need patch or the new games don´t need it???

  • Hopefully someone will read this post and use my “bad” experience as a clue to the problem behind the 2.40 update.

Unfortunately I was one of the customers that have the freezes at launch. After the update my PS3 “freezes” during the XMB launch. I only see the waving background.

BUT my PS3 is not bricked like people are saying. No, right now it’s perfectly fine with 2.40 running on it. After I reformated the hard drive I was up and running in no time.

Also my hardware partition was not corrupted like other people are saying, nope, my hard drive partition was fine. Why do I say this after just having said that I had to reformat the hard drive to fix the problem?

Well, basically I have a launch 60Gb PS3 upgraded to a 320Gb hard drive. Since my original 60Gb hard drive was still around (I just recently upgraded to the 320GB) I decided to just put the 60GB back into my PS3 thinking that all will be good. Well, it wasn’t. My 60Gb experienced the same problems. I put it in, start the PS3 and it freezes with the waves and no XMB. This hard drive was not upgraded at all, so could not have been corrupted by the update.

Well, after that I knew it wasn’t a corruption caused by the installer but since I just upgraded the hard drive and I have a full backup around I decided to format the 60Gb hard drive and boom, my PS3 launched fine and was up and running with the 2.40 firmware in no time.

I was happy to have my PS3 back but need all my data so decided to just reload my backup into the now working fine PS3 with the original 60Gb hard drive, 2 hours later, restore completes and I reboot… to ANOTHER FREEZE ON WITH THE WAVES.

Ok, now I’m seriously worried. I have a full backup of 19 months of use. I own 28 PS3 games (only counting blu-rays) and have lots of save files so my backup better work when 2.41 comes out.

I think overall this might be good to help developers determine the cause. It’s clearly some setting on my data. I was using the official MGS4 theme and everything else was pretty much default. Besides the basic configuration (network, audio, video, headset, etc) I don’t remember changing anything except the “Full RGB” and “Full White” things to get better color on my 1080p HDTV.

Sony: please, please, please fix the “2.40 XMB boot” issue. It’s not a problem with the update process. As you can see from my experience the PS3 was fine until I reloaded my backup. Please note this same backup worked fine when I upgraded to the 320Gb 2 weeks ago. If I loose all my data even having a FULL BACKUP made according to Sony safety guidelines I will be really pissed. Right now I’m fine since I do trust Sony to figure it out soon.

PS: If someone from Sony needs more information just let me know where I can send my personal details to so that someone can call me. I have the 320Gb untouched and the full backup.

  • Glad i didn’t get chance to download it now, rather have a clean version with no chance of problems, Hopefully it’ll be sorted soon.

  • Can’t play my songs while playing Call Of Duty 4
    ???????????????

  • This is really odd, in the beginning (of this post, and FW release), no one had any problems really, only a few, but now after the DL people are supposedly starting to have problems.

I guess I am really lucky, or something, because everything is working 100%…

  • ok so what is the difference for some people that it works fine and others it kills them?

I got it at like 12:30 AM and it was smoooooth as silk

maby the different models are the problem I have a 60GB maby only some models work right

  • @ 261: That’s really nice of you to post that information krik! I hope Sony will follow up on it if they haven’t already figured out the cause!

  • and the people who have a lot of problems with the new firmware??????

what happen with they????? they have to wait for a new firmware like the 1.90 and all the problems disappear on two week when the 1.92
    see the light

  • @266 Thank you :)

I really wish someone that can make a difference reads it and sends the info to the developers. They will sure figure it out soon. I’m a software engineer too so I know how helpful this descriptions can be to find problems.

  • How long will it take for u guys to put it back up?

  • Love the update it was about time;)

  • Downloaded the firmware early this morning, along with the Super Stardust update and it ran fine though I don’t think I’ll turn on the console until I get word from Sony that it won’t brick. It seems like too much of a risk because my PS3 is past its warranty. Do you folks think, if it did, Sony would charge me for repairs to a defect that their firmware caused?

  • I have a question Jeff/Eric/Grace/Anybody who’ll listen:

once i was finished installing 2.4 i went to the PS Store to buy Super Stardust HD to get me some trophies, but i noticed something weird about the store: at the far right, the big square where all the “Top Downloads” and “New Releases” lists used to be, it was just a blank playstation store logo (it was light blue colored). it seemed a little weird. is this normal?

i also noticed that for some reason it took longer to access the store; i clicked the icon then waited like 8 seconds until it popped up; before the update it was instant. is that normal too?

but finally, late last night for some reason whenever i did absolutely anything that had to do with the network (basically anything under the friends and PSN category), i had an “an error has occured” screen. once i signed out and signed back in though things were fine so far. any advice?

    thanks sony!

  • Theres going to be alot of MAD gamers Now, thanks SONY.

  • can i not post?

  • Basically #261 has described the same issue that I’m having as well. Launch 60GB PS3 purchased and swapped to a new 320GB HDD today, tried to restore but freezed again.

Sony tech support DID decide to offer me a “good will repair” to my out of warranty PS3 which was is appreciated, but gave me the run around before doing so.

What really sucks is the fact that I also restored/initialized my PS3 in an attempt to fix the issue, and am pretty sure that nuked any chance of restoring my backup saves and DLC without re-downloading them.

One things for sure, I’d hate to have the PS3 firmware team’s job. Trying to create universal firmwares that are smaller and have more features across multiple hardware revisions with a laughable amount of RAM must be Hell to say the least.

  • WOW! can’t say i’m surprised, i’ve been dumped on by Sony since i bought my PS3. i was just over at my brother’s house and he did get to DL the update. turns out the only game with trophies is superstar dust! on top of that the xmb music feature isn’t xmb at all, in order to use the xmb music the developer of the game your playing has to write it in, so if they don’t you can’t listen to your own music. correct me if i’m wrong but shouldn’t in game xmb be GLOBAL and non dependent to the game? oh but the clock looks real nice ;) thanks Sony!

and to all the numb nutts on here defending sony, saying “what have you done lately”, and asking why were all whining. I’LL TELL YOU!

    A) I spent $500 of my hard earned money this shiny black paperweight! And anything that costs me a weeks worth of pay gives me the right to complain about anything I effing want!

    B) Playstation and Playstation 2 NEVER had this many problems, not near!

    C) Xbox seems to be doing just fine with their console, they’ve had everything we (the PS3 community) have been asking for since the console launched!

do you know how hard it is to defend the PS3? the Wii has all this motion sensored interactive games that rock! but worse is the XBOX owners, i feel shame whenever i play my 360 like on cheating on my PS3. whenever i want in game chat i have to boot up my PS3 then log onto my 360 get my chat on there and then flip back to the PS3, so i’m chatting on XBOX network playing PS3, while my bluetooth headset collects dust. yeah i’m mad, WE’RE ALL MAD, we’ve dumped hundreds and hundreds of dollars on a console we want to love, while XBOX 360 is doing everything we want and more, and making it look easy!

    sony get it together!

  • I Second that!!! I really want it to be the best….and it’s just lacking. :(

  • The “good will” repair is nice to hear about…still going to wait for the all-clear sign though!

  • any one as the media server error
    (80710736)
My media server is up and running , I can see everything thats on my Mac (eyeconnect) But when I try to select something This error pops up…I’ve been using this feature for about a year or so, So I know that my setup is good…
Everything was working, A ok, Last night Before 2.40

  • ME AND MY FRIENDS HAVE ALL DOWNLOADED THE FIRMWARE 2.40!!!!!!!!!!!! like more than 10 hours ago :)
and i just wanted to tell SONY that..aarrggg……..
ME AND ALL MY FRIENDS HAVE HAD ZERO PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    kthnxbai

  • Well put #277

  • Unrelated to the happenigs right now but the more and more I think about it what 3rd party game has been announced for Trophy support other than Burnout?

We see Motorstorm 2 < in house
We see unchsrted < in house
We see Warhawk < in house
We see Stardust < in house
    We see GT5 P < in house

See a trend? I am not all togethe sure 3rd party is on board with this like we think they are. Given the fact Sony hasn’t mandated any of this, but encouraged it, doesn’t bode well for us gamers.

Developers don’t even give us an on par port of a multiplatform game, let alone any extras for our 50 gb blu-ray disc. Hell, they often make us install 5gb onto our hdds.

Guys, I’m getting worried here. I mean, are trophy’s going to be different than xbox live’s achivements? Say Burnout does get tropy support, are the requirments the same as xbox live’s achivments for the game?

See what I am getting at? Do you honestly think developers are going to give us a different set of requirments for trophy’s as they do for xbox live’s achivments?

I don’t think so. I don’t think they’re going to give us anything. Never leave it into the dev’s hands unless you have direct ties with them, Sony. As we seen with Ubisoft and COD4… No patch for dualshock 3 support, no Trophy support?

Konami said they’re not thinking about trophy support at the moment. This isn’t going to go well guys. I hope I am wrong. I really do but I don’t think developers are thinking about this like we hope they are.

  • Sony could have just as easily have put out the PS3 and never gave us any updates at all. So everyone that is complaining about what we didnt get should just shut up already. Now for those whose system is broke that does suck and it sucks bad but at least Sony is working on a fix for it. Honestly for those that keep comparing what 360 has to what the PS3 doesnt, well if your so unhappy then just sell the PS3. There problem solved.

  • Mine is A Ok!!
Thanks but Where Are the PSN Cards??????
or ad Mexico on the PSN so i can use my Credit Card!!!

  • 2.4 working smooth here…already earned a few trophies in SSHD. There is only one trophy that didnt apply when it should have but all the others have.

I wonder if the issue they ran into was due to the bandwidth draw on their servers (huge demand for 2.4) and it messed up the DL. You would think there would be a software integrity check before install though.

  • @ 277

I was so feeling the rant until

“the Wii has all this motion sensored interactive games that rock!”

there is nothing on the Wii that rocks. Let’s clear this air right now. I do, however, agree the xbox 360 is the cheaper, more graphically capable and stable machine when it comes to features. That is for damn sure.

We do, however, got to give Sony the benifit of the doubt. Their service is new. Xbox live is over 5 years old now.

Early times for Sony… the problem is Sony should see what we want and act on it. Not take 6 month vacations in between these updates. I think we should’ve had 1 update every 2 to 3 months.

  • #286, Go to someones name on ur friends list and press X

  • @285 no, it’s not problem solved. If Sony is listening to us like they say they are, they need to make it right. 2.40 firmware update is just more proof of half-@ssed work. It wouldn’t have taken them 2 years to make this FW update. It was only after SOOOOO much complaining that they finally said, fine we se the error of our ways and will try and make it right. But so for, it’s a shoddy effort. More games better start supporting trophies and fast, cause that’s all the update has going for it at the moment!

  • Well put #290 (Rendermonk)

  • Never a problem with my Launch 60 gig PS3, Im sure you cheap bastids are getting what you deserve with them gimped 40 gig consoles! muahahahah

  • Gotta love the know IG-XMB beta testers XD

  • @272,

Feel free to make them compensate you for damaging your working property.

It is more than reasonable to expect an official firmware update to be safe for installation on your machine when done correctly, even if it is outside of the factory warranty.

Sony is liable for this issue, and provided they accept it, remedy it, and learn from it this should be a straight forward process for everyone involved.

  • BTW tryp i got a 40 gig and have no problems at all Never have

  • @285

Your not the brightest crayon in the box huh? I wont be happy until my PS3 cures cancer. Period. lol

  • Sounds like a case of “You only hear it when you make a mistake. And no one appreciates it when you get it right.”

  • I only have to say this. as human beings that we all are. there’s always going to be mistakes,Sony you have done a great job with the PS3, nothing is perfect and I understand that updates might have some minor or major problems. at least, you are telling us that you are working on this issue, keep up the good work guys.

    PSN ID:nandosupes

  • nice xXnitroXx, It’s like rollin the dice at the casino bro you just didnt crap out.

  • Hi there!!!
First of all i want to admit something, i really liked your gaming systems Sony, i never got the ps1, but i was able to play the games for your console. When the ps2 came out! I thought I want that!!! And I got it…

I really like computers and tech stuff! So when i heard all the details about the PS3 I didn’t even hesitate! I mean the PS3 is not a gaming console is a computer! It has a huge potential, the cell CPU, the graphics card, well u know this better than i do, but i don’t know why u dont unleash this beast!? Why do u want to keep it under the hood?? What’s whit Linux for example i mean u can run it, but what whit the driver for the graphics card… If u release that I can’t even imagine the things people would be able to do whit Linux running on their PS3’s emulation maybe… This may not be the main purpose of ur system and it wont be if u keep coming whit u exclusive titles like MGS4, Uncharted, Warhawk… But definitely that feature would make customers happy! What about bluetooth why can’t i use my ps3 to share files with my cell phone??? I’m running 2.40 on my ps3 and i was really excited about it now i’m kind of dissapointed this 2.40 firmware update??? It’s good now i have the trophies, but if my favorite ps3 game GTA IV doesn’t make use of “trophies”, well then it becomes frustrating… And what’s with the music feature??? I mean i can’t listen my favorite tracks while playing my favorite game????? WTF????
Where are all the cores of the cell processor… if the xbox 360 can do it why the ps3 cannot??
I’ve heard that ps3’s hardware is so advanced that it’s hard to program it… i wouldn’t like to believe it’s true i really like my gaming console and i wouldn’t change it for any other.
But please come out with all the features we users would like in our system, (I’ve just mentioned a few of them but I’m sure that there are many other users with things they would like to see on their console), since u Sony guys are the only ones able to do it… unlike the psp…
By the way the sending and receiving messages while playing it’s a really cool feature I’m loving it!!! hahaha
    That’s all falks!
