As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

Hey Jeff, where are the trophys? not all of us have a credit card to purchase Super Stardust HD. Your fellow Canadians could use those PSN CARDS right now if thats to much to ask.

All my friends have it but i never got it!!!! what a disappointment they all type to me in games but i can’t…..oh well i cant see half my friends in games anyway!!! ESSPECIALLY THE CLUB!!!
I installed 2.4 with no problems. The icons are a bit slow to come up but that’s all. I wish the best for people who had issues with this firmware update. I’m sure Sony is working very hard to get to the root of the problem.
Personally, I have a feeling that this could be sabotage. It’s funny how this firmware update has issues AND the site had a possible breach.
Downloaded around 0230 this morning. It took less than five minutes. Installed in about two minutes. Everything is working fine. No lag, beeps or any other problems that folks have mentioned. Hopefully, those problems will be resolved soon for those that missed out on the wonderful update.
Fix for 2.4 update.
There doesn’t seem to be any real pattern as to which systems are affected. 60GB, 40GB, 20GB, and 80GB systems alike have all been afflicted with the issue. We’ve contacted Sony for word on the issue, but in the meantime several of the more tech savvy forum posters have determined how to fix the issue, if you’re willing to yank out your console’s hard disk drive.
Users found that removing and reformatting their PS3 hard drive and then reinserting it into the console would get the system to boot completely, after which it asks to reformat the disk again and everything runs normally. Of course they lose all of their saved games and have to redo all of their downloads, but I suppose that is better than sending in the system for a $150.00 repair.
To the haters, go buy and XBOX, you might get a couple of months out of it…

I was late for the update myself, my friends updated it and seem to be working fine. I read about smaller problems such as problems with remoteplay and mics not working online or somewhere around that. I guess the update data got corrupted because of the mass downloads of it at the same time, most users who updated as soon as it came out seem to not hav this problem. Well i can try updating using the update from somewhere else i saw but i rather wait for the official sony patch/fix, i dont mind waiting my 2.36 works fine. I just gotta say to all to just be patient.
when can we listen to music and play games
Fortunately for myself, 2.4 has been installed successfully and there’s no real problems to report apart from the occassional error code when trying to view friend’s profiles. (error code: fffffff). No idea what’s going on there.
I have to admit that at times updating can be a bit of a worry that you might end up with a bricked system. I don’t want to lose my game saves, data, all MP3s, videos. I think it’s time to make sure everything is backed up.
yea this is kinda crappy some of us have to work all day and dont a chance to sit around and jump on these updates the minuet they come out…i think those of us who have to wait should get somekind of store credit or somthing im really dissapointed right now.
I updated around 11 this morning and it worked fine. As others have said, the download and installation times are about the same as what i encountered. After that, I did not have any problems running the new features 2.40 had included.
The interface has slightly changed but in a good way. The XMB is now revamped slightly with the trophies features and the FRIENDS section is more than less changed as well. But still all very managable and presentable.
I just thought id post all of that to show all of you that the download process maybe the only problem and not the update itself. 2.40 works perfect on my system and i believe that it will just take time for EVERYONE to be able to have it. In the mean time. RELAX, CHILL, PWN NOOBS ONLINE,LAUGH WHILE YOURE AT IT, and REPEAT.

Did your friends succesfully manage to update their ps3? maybe possibly if they didnt, theres a problem, a difference due to the change on the profile from 2.36-2.40 idk just a thought.

It was good that you brought the sony up to speed with some of the xbox features. To bad it seems the red ring of death seems to have followed them

as of july 1st, my 1 yr limited warranty was up. if my ps3 were to have screwed up thanks to that fw, and they did nothing about it, i’d be pissed as hell. luckily, installed successfully.

Will it be by another update?

Well so far i have had no problems at all with the new update.
i havent had an issue with 2.4 yet. i dont wanna jinx it though (i have a launch 60 gig model, the best i know). it kinda freaked me out though last night when I was downloading it, it got to 60% then jumped to the end and was done. thought that was kinda wierd. another minor thing was that while i was testing out the igxmb during pixel junk monsters i was at the start screen for the game and i popped up the xmb. then it froze for a few seconds and i got totally freaked out and i realized then why it did that. im guessing it was because i left the start screen idle long enough that it started playing a preview to a level. well i hope everything gets worked out for those that had problems and that sony will soon fix this.

Okay, did I call this or what? Sure enough, after I just got done about Sony’s overpromising and under-delivering, they still cannot get it right.
SCEA needs to FIRE these clowns. Doesn’t Sony understand that this is just another embarassment and Sony WILL LOSE more money. It is about the bottom line, and SONY (yes I am a supporter and have purchased EVERY console they have developed), will have people who are thinking about buying a PS3, they WILL CHOSE an XBOX or Wii.
SONY JAPAN needs to fire these guys, at the least, fire them because they have HORRIBLE PR skills. Sony appears incompetent.
This is JUST another example of why Sony loses money. I just read another review saying SONY is still behind when it comes to Social Gaming (Gaming online with friends) and clearly Microsoft dominates here, SIMPLY because they give users what they want (Yes, I also have an 360 and Wii).
Sony, you are WAY behind, and not only that, with $3.3 Billion dollars in losses right now, I suggest you clean house immediately and remove these guys. Clearly, the choice for new customers is BUY an XBOX until SONY PS3 gets their act together.
I am thankful I didn’t download the new firmware release.

As a former Microsoft employee, I think Sony doesn’t do much vetting when hiring their “Directors”, at least from the guys I see on here. How about this, using videos powered by Vitter that cannot play on the PS3. So, PS3 users cannot even VIEW Sony’s videos using the PS3 browser. HOW PATHETIC.. in fact, it can be summed up into one word. Stupid!!
Some heads should be rolling, and I can already name three people I think should be replaced. Because of the negative press, Sony just lost more console sales than all three of these guys salaries combined.
you guys do realize that this also means tomorrows store update will also be delayed. or at least delayed for some. but which set, 2.36 or 2.40? glad my 2.40 is working, but i’m running outta trophies to earn fast…..
oh one thing i’d like to be able to do is toggle the time/date on and off. I know a lot of people requested this feature (i wasn’t one but am all for it) but i’d like to be able to choose whether or not i want it on. thanks guys!

I’ve already used the in-game XMB feature at least 100 times!!!!
And I’ve been getting excited about getting trophies! (I also like how when you choose people’s icons on your friend list, you can see their profile, trophies, and the games you played them in!)
I haven’t gotten any trophies yet… and neither has any of my friends… but I already like the trophy system! lol Nice job with the new features!!!!

Videos. They use the PS3 Browser with a link to read this blog and watch the videos.. but then some STUPID incompetent employee chooses to use Vitter to host the video which cannot be played on the PS3 browser, so… Sony encourages users to use the browser and read the PS3 Blog, but yet they don’t even make sure their users can view it. We can view YouTube Videos, but Eric L and his incompetant counterparts use Vitter. Eric, you are too old for these Freshman mistakes. You’re fired!
V2.40. Sooooooo much hype about how awesome it is, yet it is old school technology in which XBOX has had for nearly 2 years, and now they deliver a product that was NOT tested fully before released and now they got negative press, upset customers who now have a BRICK, and lost more Sales..
These are just a FEW small examples of why SCEA or at least SONY JAPAN needs to clean house. I seriously am calling that SCEA get new management, at least replace these clowns. Now!
For those looking for a good game console, I would tell others to buy another game console from another manufacturer until SCEA gets their act together.
I have a 60gb ps3 version. No problems.
I like in-game XMB. However, I took a course to make Graphical User Interface and having so many options that can not be use in-game makes it more complicated. A good GUI has to be simple and require less work(scrolling down) for users to use a function. I think Sony tried to make it look like the original XMB. However, Having so many useless icons makes the GUI confusing in inefficient. Unless Sony is going to allow user to use those function in-game, I think they should be removed.

I know you’re taking losses on hardware, though and maybe that’s why the PS3 has been underwhelming up to right now. Maybe if/when you start making Money you’ll pass some good features and games are way.

I can tell by the comments, that most users who comment like having a SIMPLE feature like Voice Chat, have not seen any other console. This is NOT new and shame on Sony for being sooo late to implement this… wait. sorry I spoke to soon. NO, they don’t even have voice chat. This is old technology and basic online gaming.. and yet, they cannot even figure that out, nor can they even give users the ability to Mute other users who talk trash, curse, or leave mic on and you can hear everything. I swear they don’t even play their own system. this is the first thing I noticed when we purchased ours about 7 months ago.
I bet the folks behind these updates go home and play XBOX… because it has those features… um.. 2 years ago. Trophies.. Microsoft has had Achievements 2 years ago. Voice Chat, Texting, Muting, In Game Invites.. etc.. this is BEYOND basic.
Shame on PS3… Hire new guys!
Everyone needs to calm down. To quote one of the posts, “this could make or break the PS3.” That’s hilarious. My install works fine, the remaining PS3 owner’s will soon be updated…w/ no probs. Try not to get all Red in the face (or is it Eye of Death) about this it could be worse, of course.

I turned off my PS3 5 minutes before the update went live, and got home roughly 10 after it was pulled.
Ah well. I supposed the wait will be worth it. Who knows? One of those bricked PS3’s coulda been mine.

Sony is the best, they try to make us all happy but when they get rushed into releasing a firmware like this then you can expect something to go wrong. i dont care about what anyone says, Ps3 is still wayyyyy better than Xbox 360
Pay attention jut22 and do your homework. Sony USED to be the #1 Console.. now they are LAST place. They have lost, already with just the PS3, $3.3 BILLION dollars, that is not a good model. Also, read the press, Gamers are NOT convinced to turn away from XBOX or Wii.. Sony has WAY too many problems. Sony gives you what? A BlueRay player? Literally, that is one of the only values at this time. A Sony BlueRay player alone costs $389, if you buy a PS3 for $399 ($10 more), you can look at it that you get a $10 Game Console along with a BlueRay player.
I have convinced our in-laws to get a PS3, PURELY because it has a BlueRay player and comes with a Game Console.. other than that. If you are a hardcore Gamer… um.. um…. very few will say pick up a PS3. Read the reviews from people who use ALL 3 like I do.
Sorry, I got a good job and can afford these toys.. I am just making sure Sony hears the B*tching from their TRUE loyal fans like me who wants them to succeed. I can tell people who think Trophies are cool, they must think it is NEW. Other consoles already have this feature. Truth is, Sony is just behind when in fact, they should have had this long ago.
BUY a Sony to play your movies… NOT ready to be a game console that will replace the other 2.
Most people have good installs, you obviously don’t understand that PRESS talks about these flaws… and it DOES..no matter how ignorant you are, affect sales. Sony, WILL lose sales from customers who are not yet satisfied that Sony is serious. Check the NEWS before you ignorantly laugh…

Can we get the controller battery status moved? It blocks the clock on the in-game XMB. Also, very laggy XMB. Please fix it.
I can only surmise that the problem lies in the the hardware revisions used in replacing the launch 20/60 gB models with the newer 40/80.
I’m guessing most of the debug models that Sony’s programmers use when prepping the firmware updates are (for the most part) launch or pre-launch PS3’s. Just as an example, the launch PS3’s had the PS2’s emotion engine built in and included memory card readers whereas the newer 80 gB revision used software emulation (emphasis on software) for PS2 playback and the 40 gB model lacks card readers of any sort (thus removing all the firmware needed to operate said card readers).
Perhaps these differences are what’s leading to the freezing issues. Just a thought
Does anyone have mic problems after this update? I heard a lot of people have. Me and my friends weren’t able to hear each other yesterday in numerous games, like COD4, Resistance, Battlefield and Warhawk.
I installed 2.4 this morning apparently with no issues. I only noticed that the trophy menu has a question mark “?” icon. Is this normal????
From what I have read ppl that have downloaded the update extremely early (11:30 p.m-7:30a.m.)have had no problems. I downloaded the update at about 11:45p.m. and logged in in the morning and a lot of my friends were logged in and they downloaded the update early. All the ppl that downloaded it afterward have experienced problems. Someone said that Sony was hacked and I agree with them because only ppl that downloaded after a certain time had problems.
I have one question. My in-game xmb works on all my games except MGO gameplay (works with mgs4 and it works in the lobby in mgo). My question is Will it be fixed???
Assyarian.. just out of curiousity.. in what way is the PS3 better when it comes to GAMING. Yes, it is a better MEDIA player.. Blueray capabilities.. but beyond that?
Better Graphics.. not really. Better Online Gaming. NO WAY! Better controls? Personal preference? Better online options? NO way. XBOX 360 you can download movies, videos, music, and they have a MUCH better GUI (Graphical User Interface).
So, YES.. I use the SONY PS3 as our MEDIA player mostly. Play music throughout home using home theatre throughout our home. It’s a Blueray player.. very cool! Bluetooth capabilities.. I like it! I probably have more games than most PS3 owner on the system.. BUT.. when it comes to playing games online with friends.. XBOX 360 is a much better SOCIAL experience for voice chatting with friends, Achievements, Muting annoying players, downloading movies (Although Sony Japan announced the other day they will soon be offering the ability to get movies online… I won’t be holding my breath).
Sony.. went from 1st to 3rd.. and mistakes like this.. just hurt them more.
I am pulling for SONY.. that is why I expect a few people to be fired soon. Sony is not a small ma-pa shop. This kind of crap.. makes news. It’s all over the Tech industry that Sony screwed up… Not my problem. I just am commenting and pleading to Sony.. straighten up!
