PS3 System Software Update (v2.41)

1,366 0

Hi, everyone. As many of you know, we released PS3 firmware update v2.40 last week, but had to take it offline temporarily because, for a limited number of users, the XMB wouldn’t display after the update was installed. We’ve been able to fix the problem, and I’m happy to report that firmware update v2.41 will be released shortly.

We want to extend our apologies to the PlayStation community for any inconvenience. Now we’ll be looking forward to seeing everyone online and racking up those trophies!

  • @1250 GGCAN…….i’ve seen ur posts on this blog the past few days and you dont seem like a bullsh*ter, but i have to pay 190$ to fix my brick so Sony is obv pulling ur leg

  • Godz_pizzaman…yah I believe you….they do say free only if it was part of the 2.40 firmware that messed it up.

Maybe something happened before and you didn’t realize until the firmware got updated.

Really sorry to hear about that though.

I would suggest trying to do what NeCrom-X recommended a bit back first and if it doesn’t work, I guess you gotta go that route.

  • I have a question…
I have not update to 3.40v. will be a problem to update direct to 2.41v.?

  • Oop! 2.40v.

  • if youre having any Metal gear solid 4 problems
its because you have a keyboard connected

  • @1254 Ohizukakun01, I think you’ll be ok, but if I was you, just to be safe, I’d give Sony a call and ask them before you update.

Better safe than sorry right ?

Anyone else here gone from a much older version to the newest with any problems or did everything work out ok ?

  • @ 1257.

    I went from 2.36 to 2.41 w/ no prob.

Anyone know when we are getting home? and why can’t I watch videos on ps.blog on my ps3…? Also, where/when can we get patches for the games to use trophies/in-game music?

    Add me! (ID: Ckrovax)

  • @1258…rumour has it beta Home is Sept 08 and full Home is 2009.

I saw this article at PSXExtreme.com on July 4/08:

“It used to dominate the news on a weekly basis, especially in the months directly after its unveiling, but since then, we haven’t heard much about PlayStation Home. We’re well aware of the delays, of course, but the last report says an open beta is scheduled for this fall. Well, that’s still the case, as Sony’s PlayStation Network director Eric Lempel says.

In a recent interview with Next-Gen, he said very clearly- “The Home open beta is still on schedule for release later this fall.” He was asked about PSN director Susan Panico’s earlier comments when she said the initial beta rollout would be “similar to Gmail” and it will work just fine as an “open, functioning beta.” This statement was met with mixed results by gamers; some still bitter about the delay saw this as an excuse to release a half-done Home this year. But that really is not the case:

“If you think about Gmail and Susans reference, Gmail when it launched in beta was a fully functional email service. I personally was using it and it offered everything youd expect, but was in beta just to say that theres more to come and maybe its not fully polished. The reason weve been delaying [Home] is so that we can deliver a high quality service that the users will enjoy. Even though it will be in beta, it will be a fair representation of what the service can be and its potential, so it wont be a 0.5 release, it will be a fully robust service.”

So there you have it. Despite the fact that the official launch of Home remains in 2009, we’ll still be able to jump in and test it out this fall. Besides, one has to remember that Home will likely be a service that receives ongoing upgrades and enhancements even after its official release, so if you look at it this way, the open beta rollout isn’t much different than a regular ol’ launch. Oh, and just as a final side note, Lempel did reconfirm Sony’s plan to launch a downloadable movie service for the PS3 in the US this summer. That is a very cool option, and one that should make selling PS3s an even easier proposition.”

As for getting patches for games to use trophies/in game music….the developers have to code those so we can download them into our existing games.

Right now only Super Stardust has them, but you can also look at psntrophies.com or thesixthaxis.com for times when these patches are going to be released and who will/will not/may, etc release and for which games.

  • The 2.41 upgrade seems to have caused my PS3 to not be able to read CDs. I had no problems with the 2.40 upgrade. As soon as I upgraded to 2.41( and I mean within an hour afterwards), my Blu-Ray movies and all my PS3 games would lock up after a short period of time. I have tried multiple restores (including a hard reboot and full format) and nothing works. My PS3 isn’t completely “bricked”, but it might as well be. Luckily, my PS3 is still under warranty, and Sony says they’ll repair / replace it (their option, of course), but it’s going to suck having to wait a month or more to get my PS3 working again…

Anyone else having the same problem? I’ve seen some other people out there on the internet with the same problem, but it seems like the majority of people didn’t have problems with the 2.41 upgrade.

My console is a 60 GB model, bought Sep 2007. Maybe 2.41 just messes up certain models? If anyone else is having a similar problem, please speak up. If there’s enough people affected, maybe Sony will release another patch (God forbid! LOL)…

  • Hi there, since I’ve updated to Firmware 2.40/2.41 I have seen two little issues with my PS3 that can hopefully be fixed with the next system update ?!
First, sometimes when I shut off the PS3, the system hangs for a short while, then it beeps 2 times and after a while it switches off.
Second, somtimes the controller doesn’t synchronize with the PS3 when turning on the PS 3 by pressing the PS-Button on the it … The four ID-LEDs are always blinking and the controller will not be connected.
This can only be fixed by ressetting the Controller…

  • F*#&%*#$&%*$&$*$&%$*$&&%#@!*%@#$^!!!!!!!!!!!!
    my ps3 aint working…

btw the up date is awsome now i just need a game with trophies

  • oh i dont know if the problem is from update
i doubt it b/c it just did this 2 day my games are freazing for no reason and now they freeze like as soon as i start them.(im angry)

  • My system is crashing constantly since the update. At first it at least let me start the game to the point where I got to the menu. Now, it’s dropping as soon as I hit the XMB.

  • Wow… Sony’s phone service tech support is… crap! Seriously. Where’s the “If your PlayStation3 keeps shutting off with a blinking red light and refuses to stay on for more than 60 seconds, press 6.”

  • Update 2.41 has done nothing better for me or two of my other friends it has slowed the game and decreesed the wireless signal for the PS3 so we would like to have this fixed if you are able too.

    Thank You, Tanoc

  • rumble feedback as you navigate the xmb would be great :D

  • it cant be the update b/c only my disk games arnt working

  • I had no problems with 2.40 installing but now after installing 2.41 my PS3 keeps losing its wireless internet connection off and on constantly and now the wireless controllers, Which are Dualshock 3’s, are malfunctioning. The controllers will either cut out while playing a game then become active again during game play and I’ve noticed the L.E.D. on the controller that indicates your controller # will not be lit yet the controller is working! I saw one other person mention that they were having similiar controller issues so there must be something to all this regarding Firmware 2.41. Any others with similiar problems?

  • Also forgot to mention my controllers will do the 4 L.E.D.’s flashing thing and be unable to establish a connection with the PS3. Also they mysteriously will shut off (no L.E.D. lit on controller denoting its controller assignment #) This all occurs pretty frequently now but not consistently.

  • Oh, and my system is an 80Gig PS3 purchased Christmas 2007.

  • similar problems here, no wireless, some of the games (example Bejing 2008) wont install and load. Also stalls and then double beep when turning off the system.

  • oh and 60GB version, bought late last year.

  • I was starting to think my router was to blame but all is well there. I went into the PS3 network settings and redid all the settings (Security, IP address, etc) and my connection problems persists. Another thing of importance possibly was that when I would, for example, be using the controller to type in my WEP key via the onscreen keyboard in the network settings screen all of a sudden I would suddenly get extra characters typed or just get no response at all from the controller. I mentioned the controller ‘no responsiveness’ when playing games in a previous post but forgot to mention it happens within the XMB too!

  • it didnt just keep the XMB from showing it completely messed my system so it wouldnt run. when it restated it would only shoe the opening wave then when I reset it it went black and that was the end of my ps3. Sony seems to be trying to down play this whole screw up with the 2.4 update. dont lie to people and say it only wouldnt bring up the XMB. cus if that were the case I wouldnt be without my ps3 for weeks.

  • Question: Is there a reason that post 2.40/2.41 – that backup/restore does NOT collect and backup earned trophies?

Or is it just a case of someone missing to fix/change the backup/restore applications to also look in that folder, or whereever trophies are stored? :)

No big catastrophy right now, though, since only one game supporting trophies is out. But for the future, it would probably be a good idea if you patch this…

  • First Sony awsome update big step, in my response to it the only thing I have to complain about is how your gamer card for online is ONLY ONLINE, I have to take my PS3 somewhere to get updates and download PSN games, and yes I know its alittle thing BUT, I think it would be cooler if your “gamer card” (profile) would update trophies and be viewable offline as well.

My second and last thing I think is important that would help ALOT is a more multiplayer inviting interface…….so with that said I think you should allow mulitple users ON the local PS3 to be able to log in atthe same time (of couse this includes PSN accounts foronline play). The only reason I say this is its really ANNOYING when you play say resistance and your saved data is not saved to your profile, it would be really cool if when you playes co-op your progress was saved under your profile….instead of having to log into your user account then you HAVE TO START ALL OVER because nothing you did earlier with whomever you share your PS3 with counted for your account. And furthermore trophies will count for crap if playing co-op games if you can’t unlock your own trophies for your own accounts…sorry not cool to unlock somethign for the person you are playing with. Anyways thats my thoughts and I hope you think about it.

  • hopefully the next update will make the trophies feature look at what youve already done and give you the trophies for it. it wouldnt be that hard for them to do it either since all the save data is on the hard drive anyway.

  • well after i updated from 2.36 to 2.41 i started to get load lockups in my games like Turok and Rock Band. I mean the game will run but after so long if I have to load a new level or song it gets stuck in the loading sequence like eternally. i’ll even hit quit game and then it does the same thing eternal waiting. then I have to shut the system down with the main power switch. has anyone else have this happen after updating to 2.41?

  • WHEN ARE YOU GUYS GOING TO FIX THE 2.41 ISSUE?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? IF SONY WAS SOO QUICK TO FIX THE 2.40 WHY CANT THEY SAY HEY MAYBE WE SHOULD LISTEN OR READ THE DAMN BLOGS AND TRY TO FIX THE 2.41 ISSUE SINCE THERES A
S H I T LOAD OF PEOPLE WRITING ABOUT HOW JACKED UP IT IS

  • FIX IT NOW

  • FIX IT RIGHT NOOOOOOWWWWW I WOULD LIKE EVERYONE WHO READS THIS AND HAS HAD A PROBLEM SINCE 2.41 TO KEEP WRITING THIS PEOPLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM I THINK E3 SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS

  • I just updated to 2.41 and I am having sound problems. The PS3 loses the sound signal and gains it back every few minutes. My PS3 is connected to a receiver, so my surround sound goes in and out. This is occurring during games. I haven’t tried out CDs, DVDs, or BDs yet, but I’m sure I’d have the same issues. Is anyone else having this happen? If so, I hope this will be fixed sooner than later. I’m very upset about these problems that people are having. I didn’t realize the scope of people’s problems!

  • fix the problem

  • ok sony is completly assinine i called today to get my warenty info and so thay could mail me a box so i can mail them this POS to fix it thay told me i need to mail them a copy of the receipt well if it was normal paper and not your meijer/wal-nart heat sensitive paper that would be fine but no thay said thayll mail it back to me if i dont mail them a copy of this receipt how the hell can i even do that this makes no sence

  • i was playin my 360 the other day with friends and i thought, wouldn’t it b cool if your friends could create profiles on your ps3 like they can on a 360 and when you and your friends play they could log in and unlock trophys to when devs start using them, just a thought

i know you can create multiple profiles but im sayin wouldnt it b cool if you could log in on all of like you can on the 360

will sony make that possible by a fw update or sumthin

  • My PS3 is pretty much unusable at this point. I posted earlier here (1269,1270,etc) regarding my problems post-2.41 update. I can’t play any games now without the controller losing communication with the PS3. I’ll play SuperStardust HD, for example, and I’ll being controlling my ship then suddenly it continues on in the last direction I steered it in and ultimately leading to my death. The communication loss occurs for about 6 secs in duration and just continually happens several times a minute. Also I continually get a system message appearing saying I’ve been disconnected from the Network. this will continually occur whether in a game or not. I truly hope someone at Sony is aware of these problems. Later today I’m going to try some trouble-shooting steps of my own and I’ll post any noteworthy notes/observations here.

  • I mean i didnt get a chance to update the 2.40 update but i got a chance to update to 2.41 and once i did that i started having problems with my system like if im on the internet browser and i go to any website the browser screen will disappear then wen i exit out to go back to the main ps3 options my screen will fuzz then it will sort of erase the picture off my screen and if i turn off the ps3 from the front the light will jus blink for like foreva so ill have to turn it off from the back and im havin alot of freezin problems if im playin a game and hit the ps button to go to the xmb the game will freeze. idk wat to do i had the ps3 since the first day it came out and neva had problems until now.

  • flexito,

I have the 60GB system hooked up to my TV via HDMI cables and my PS2 games don’t work either. If I hook the system up via Component cables, then PS2 games work.

Everything worked on HDMI just fine before the stupid 2.40 update. :-\

(doing a full system format/restore didn’t help either)

  • since my 2.41 update. My PS3 hasnt been able to read any kind of discs particularly my ps3 games and my DVDs. i was playing burnout paradise when it locked up after an event. i waited and waited until i turned the system of via power button on the system itself. i turned it back on and it hasnt been able to read any CD since… i get stuck with the little swirly thing on the upper right hand side of the screen. i am so disappointed as i average 3 hours of gaming a WEEK! i purchased the unit on May 25, 2008 so its pretty new. I really need help as hong kong office isnt doing anything after several emails. i come all the way from the Philippines and support here is close to ZERO. Im afraid that 2.41 actually damaged my hardware by somehow overclocking it to some extent… i know firmware… they can make or break any electronic and i think it just broke my ps3… so so so disappointed

  • Update to my 2.41 upgrade problem that I posted about previously: After trying a hard reboot and full format in conjuction twice, my PS3 has completely stopped reading any CDs. At first, it would at least read Blu-Ray and PS3 game CDs for a little while before they locked up and would read regular CDs, as well. Now, it does nothing.

I’m thinking about putting a new hard drive into my PS3, in order to force a fresh PS3 image. In not, I’m waiting on the return coffin to come from Sony so that I can send back my PS3 (still under warranty).

Menawhile, It’s obvious that this problem is real, at least for some of us. Sony should pull the 2.41 upgrade now, to save other folks from this same problem. They should also acknowledge the problem (even if they don’t know what caused it yet), in the interests of good customer relations.

C’mon Sony, get it together! I know you’re better than the companies that make the other consoles (that’s why I bought a PS3). You just need do what’s right. It won’t help me, but it may help thousands of others…

  • Portable PSN id…..

Wasn’t sure where to post this, found it at PS3 Fanboy site.

“Here’s a nifty feature some of you have been looking forward to — an official way to display your PSN ID on various websites. Obviously, you will need to have a PSN account. You will also need to sign up for a PlayStation Underground account as well if you do not already have one. Linking to the two of them together will allow you access to the PLAYSTATION Network portable ID. The PSN portable ID “is a visual summary of your PLAYSTATION(R)Network account, including your Avatar, “About Me” message and Online ID.” There is even an HTML code provided for you to display this information wherever you please.

You can also now access your Friend List via the PSU — in addition to the information on their portable ID, you will see their online status. If online, you can view their comment/status and what game they are currently playing. If they are offline, you can see when they were last online. At this time, you cannot manage your Friend List via the PSU. So what are you waiting for? “

  • @ MNWestStudent

I didn’t get to read your post until after I did a master reset. As you mentioned, this does not work for our issue. I did switch to my old component cables and the PS2 games worked fine.

Since the PS2 games were working fine through HDMI before the firmware update, I can only assume that something was changed with the HDMI signal in 2.41.

Anyways, since the problem was isolated to a mere signal problem and not a crazy hardware problem I just researched that. I found that my Phillips 47″ Plasma had outdated firmware(yes my TV set gets Firmware updates too). I simple uploaded the new firmware for the TV and I’m all set now. All my PS2 games, as well as everything else on my PS3, is running great.

Thanks for all the help guys.

  • PS…

When I called customer service the rep(Steve) mentioned that he had not heard of anyone with my specific problem. However, he had recieved quite a few calls about systems not loading any discs at all after 2.41. He also mentioned bricked systems but only for 2.40

  • For posting 1206 and 1207 ( PS2 games not working on 60GB PS3 using HDMI 1080p with 2.41 update ):

I’ve got the exact same problem, so at least there are two of us out there ( glad to see it ).

I had called sony, they said to do the “system reset”, tried it, and it made no difference.

I also looked at the list of PS2 games that would work with the software only emulator ( no 60GB emotion chip ), and all of mine are on the list that “don’t work”: God of War, Ratchet and Clank, …. I haven’t tried a PS2 title that is supposed to work with software emulation, may go and get a cheep used to experiment with.

After a ton of internet digging, here’s what I think is going on:

    1) 2.40 was so bad Sony was scrambling to get it fixed, and had to make the decision of getting it fixed for only the majority of systems, ie software only PS2. A very calculated business decision.

2). The management at Sony is now deciding if it is worth their while to to address the 60GB systems and re-enable use of the emotion chip, for the small percentage of the 60GB base playing games not compatible with the software emulator. There’s been internet rumors that Sony might at some point disable use of the emotion chip if available, Sony’s management is deciding if this is the right time to officially do it.

Here’s the balance: the small set of “screwed users” spending the $50-$100 for a used PS2 system, versus it costs Sony about $50-$100 for two engineers to work an hour trying to fix the problem ( which in another year or two won’t matter with more PS3 game selection ).

I personally think I’m going to need to go get a PS2 system, even though I conciously went out of my way to get a 60GB system just to avoid doing so.

  • @ 1291
Same problem. After the 2.41 update my MLB 08 froze… When I reset the ps3 (40 gig purchased in january) it wouldn’t read any discs (games, Blue Ray Discs,DVDs). I reset the settings and did the full reformat twice (as instructed by sony rep). No difference. My PS3 and discs are in immaculate condition. I’m swapping my console through Sony at no cost… But this is still some BS. No PS3 for however many weeks???? Garbage.

  • I don’t know about anyone else but I CANNOT use the Start New Chat function in the lobby. I can only chat through a game now which completely sucks. None of my friends have chat capabilities in the lobby either. any way to fix this? Like I said, it works in game but not in the lobby and I never had a problem before. I got 2.40 no problems then 2.41 and no chat. any help please?

  • Edit to my 1297 – I have a 80 gig ps3 – sorry to read about the problems with the ps2 games registering on the ps3. hope they work that out fast.

  • @vinyvat

try using component cables or A/V cables when using PS2 games. It that works it means you have a problem with your signal. I had the same problem and resolved it by updating the firmware on my TV set.

If the PS2 games work using the different cables at least you know you can still use your PS3 and don’t have to go out and get a PS2

So far i’ve counted 3 of us with this problem.

  • And another thing…..Since 2.41 I CANNOT import cds to my harddrive. Thanks sony, for all you do this finger’s for you.

    (you know which one)

  • I CANT PLAY MUSIC WHILE IM PLAYING. I ALREDY CHECK AND THEY ARE THE CORRECT FORMAT(MP3). O AND ITS SAYS THAT THE “MUSIC CONTENT CANT BE PAY DURING TH USE OF THIS GAME”. PLEASE FIX IT
