12.59 – A brand new game revealed for the first time – MAG. Andy Beaudoin from Zipper Interactive details this Massive Action Game (get it?). MAG will support up to 256 players (!) MAG is squad-based, with teams broken down into 8 players, with fine-tuned soldier types, ongoing campaigns and character growth.

12.51 – Developers from Treyarch, EA Tiburon, Ubisoft, Bethesda, 2K Marin, and Lucas Arts are shown on video talking about how much more they’ve learned about programming for the PS3, and how that’s going to pay off in games like Far Cry 2, The Force Unleashed, Prince of Persia, Call of Duty World at War, Madden NFL 09, and Fallout 3. “We’re just beginning to scratch the surface of what PS3 is capable of.”

12.48 – New Hardware package: the 80 GB Core Pack coming this fall $399 – 40 more GB at that price, plus DualShock 3.

12.46 – Lee: “You can stop imagining now.” Video shown featuring lots of DC Legends like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Joker, and more.

12.43 – Mr. Lee is a HUGE MMO fan, been playing since Everquest began… so this is a dream project for him. “Imagine being able to create your own superhero… and help Batman take on the Joker… that’s a cool image.”

12.41 – SOE – Sony Online Entertainment – bringing titles to PlayStation 3. Jim Lee (of comic book fame) on stage now to preview DC Universe online. He’s doing 1-armed push-ups. Don’t hurt your inking hand!

DSCN0405

12.35 With an install base of over 35 million worldwide, many more PSP games are on the way. Montage shown, featuring Patapon 2, The Force Unleashed, Super Stardust Portable, Madden 09, LocoRoco 2, NBA 09 The Inside, Lego Batman, and Buzz Master Quiz.

12.33 – For the first time ever revealed – Resistance for PSP… Resistance Retribution! Out Spring 2009.

12.31 – On to the PSP – announcing a new PSP Entertainment Pack – in October we’ll launch the Ratchet & Clank Size Matters pack, which includes the PSP-2000, National Treasure 2, a 1GB memory card, and echochrome.

12.30 – Eric demonstrates how to copy movies to the PSP. You can do this either through a PS3, or through the PC Store. BTW, this video download service will be available TONIGHT (applause). We’ll be adding new titles each week.

12.29 – “How long will it take to download an SD movie?” The answer is about an hour for a 2 hour movie. However, with progressive downloading, you can begin watching your video almost instantaneously.

12.25 – Eric Lempel takes the stage (you remember him, right), to show a live demo of the video download service – it’s part of the existing PLAYSTATION Store – there’s a new video tab. Each studio has a page. Eric shows how to buy, rent, or preview a movie.

12.23 – Jack talks about the new video download service. On Day 1 – Sony Pictures, Fox, MGM, Lions Gate, Warner Brothers, Disney, and more will have content available. A huge differentiator – you can take movies and tv on the go via PSP.

sonypresser12

12.19 – Jack Tretton PlayStation Home: “Your patience will be more than rewarded.” We’ve got great publisher support on game-specific spaces. A new video is debuted showing more of what Home’s experience will be all about.

12.17 – Gran Turismo TV introduced – racing video content coming to Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, shows like Top Gear and other original content in Hi Def. Gearheads will definitely be all over this. Lots of international content. Launches August 1st.

12.14 – Jack Tretton: “We’re not interested in filling up our store with games that nobody wants to play, just so we can say ‘we have the most games.'” He follows this up with a trailer showing a number of upcoming PSN games like PixelJunk Eden, Fat Princess, Crash Commando, PAIN Amusement Park, Flower, Ragdoll Kung-Fu and Siren: Blood Curse.

12.11 – 180 million pieces of downloaded content since launch. New stuff coming to the PLAYSTATION Store – Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty. “Like a summer blockbuster – high quality, less expensive.” Q4B will answer the questions to Clank’s disappearance at the end of RCF: Tools of Destruction. Price will be $14.99.

12.09 – PLAYSTATION Network – we’re instituting a single sign on this fall – online on a PC, a PSP, PS3. Check your friends list on a PC (I think a few of you have asked for that).

12.07 – New PS2 bundle coming this fall – a new Lego Batman Bundle, along with a Justice League movie, for $149.

12.03 – Let’s talk about PS2: More than 130 new titles coming to PS2. Not bad for a 9 year old system.

12.01 – Among the announcements – we’re turning our attentions to Latin America… and a announcement of PS3 Greatest Hits. Huge applause for sackboy, Alex, and LBP!

11.58 – Alex Evans of Media Molecule is out on the stage to help Jack work through the business side of things… more on this later…

sonypresser10

11.56 – Ted has left the stage, Jack Tretton is back out to talk about user generated content. “We’ve seen a glimpse of that future – it’s called LittleBigPlanet.”

11.54 – More, even huger enemies/ships shown in an R2 video. An Idaho location has been mentioned as well. Add that to Chicago, San Francisco, and the California redwood forests.

11.53 – PS video from the Press Conference will be available on PSN, you’ll wanna make sure to see this.

11.51 – Did I mention this thing is huge? Cheers from the audience as the live demo ends.

11.50 – Ted is taking on a 300 foot leviathan (you may have read about this in GamePro) with a rocket launcher. On paper it’s one thing – in full motion, it’s something else entirely…

11.48 – Here’s a look at Resistance 2, Ted Price from Insomniac Games takes the stage.

11.46 – Jack Tretton: “If PlayStation in 2007 was all about hardware, PlayStation in 2008 is all about software.”

11.45 – Jack Tretton: “The PLAYSTATION 3 is the most complete and future-proof Blu-ray player available.”

PlayStation Press Conference

11.41 – OK back in my seat, as CEO Jack Tretton reacquaints us with the history of PlayStation and Sony Computer Entertainment. “We take a longer look ahead.”

The press conference is just about to get started and I’m up on stage playing Metal Gear Solid 4. You might be able to see me as soon as G4 starts their live video stream (look to the left side of the stage).

I’ll keep updating this post with news from the event, so check back often or keep your eyes on our twitter feed for the latest.

  • So, unsurprisingly, all they had was Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and God of War 3…WTH is wrong with Sony? RPGs…where?? Important exclusives?? I’m not seeing any.

I ask again. THAT’S IT?! THAT’S REALLY IT? MS gets the whole Square Enix lineup while we get stuff way late or never at all?

I feel disgusted. As a Sony fan, I’m really disgusted. Once a reliable 360 shows up, I’m getting one, this is too damn much. I didn’t buy a PS3 for B grade shooters and delayed ports.

  • Im getting a 360 also but idk, for non online multiplatforms its ps3 for me. PS3 has better graphic (me and my brother compared our DMC4 and PS3s had more of a unique color fill out and better lighting and lesser loading times.)Ill get the games like FFXIII and star wars for ps3… idk about RE5 though… the online co-op. Online Multiplatforms are for 360 hands down. Xbox is winning in RPG and shooter unless resistance 2 or KZ2 just blows halo and gears away. Honestly… getting FFXIII on 4 discs… not for me. Id rather get it on one disc but as of now, xbox 360 might be a good investment for the other RPG hopefully not multiple disc like lost oddessy. Neither do i want a Shortend version cause its on 360 cause of Microsoft not willing to pay for the multiple discs for another game. I just want FFXIII as best as can be for the system im getting it on.

  • ############ SONY! I highly recommend
############ that you put a good
    ############ FFXIII trailer at your
    ############ E3download section at the
############ psStore – You need to show
    ############ that FFX13 IS A PS3 GAME,
############ the one that appeared at
############ MS’s last moment would be
############ a good one, but change
############ the ending saying it goes
    ############ to the ps3. More ps3
    ############ owners need to realize
############ that its should be played on
############ the ps3, its where its home is.
############ And it would be nice to see a ############ well rendered trailer from
############ FFX13, its always good graphics.

PLEASE!! PUT A FFX13 TRAILER AVAILABE FOR DOWNLOAD IN THE PS STORE!!! ITS THE LEAST YOU CAN DO AT THE MOMENT!

  • Oh AND sony’s presentation… Disappointment but they are showing the games SCEA really has been cooking up hopefully i see some RPG at TGS. Their presentation showed Everything we already know about… come on… Not much different from microsoft. Im like… Ive seen RE5,Fallout 3 and GeOW2 and those 3 JRPG from SE. The ONLY thing that made them top was the FF surprise. If it wasnt for that, they would’ve been on par with sony. As knowing how microsoft does… that new avatar crap is just wow… its like mii mixed with home but its arriving ALOT earlier than home. Sony would be smart to pick a couple Sony fanboy who actually know business and take advice from them to know what to do next cause they are clueless.

we have Folklore…that is a jRPG…have you tried it?

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Folklore is an Action / Adventure with only a few RPG elements, but absolutely “not” a full RPG.

The PS3 has so far “0” RPG exclusives, except a crappy JRPG 360 port (Enchanted Arms) and a very good WRPG 360 port (Oblivion).

If you’re a die hard RPG fan, you’d better stick with the PS2 or if you want HD gaming, you better get a 360, that is what the whole E3 is telling us.

  • The Playstation fanbase is based upon people who enjoy Action Adventure games, story driven games and RPG’s. Where are these games? Hopefully the tokyo game show will showcase some of them…but, from what it seems, the exclusives list is dwindling and Im curious to see if other devs follow suit with making those exclusives multi plat. But, Logan Almasy has a point, people didnt buy the PS3 for B list shooters and delayed ports. If we wanted a plethora of shooters, we’d get Xboxes, and since Microsoft has gone out of their way more then you to secure RPG’s you not only are alienating the majority of your fanbase and giving them up to Microsoft.

  • You’re EXACTLY right Onna76_NL.

  • I agree with you Onna… if your one of those huge RPG fans you want a ps2 and a 360 since FFXIII is on it. Ps3 is now targeting NA and EU for some apparent reason with shooters while forgetting about rpgs. Sony is doing alot of wrong things this year while microsoft has made their massive mistake with the RRoD which has been fixed. I still have my ps2 even though my ps3 has full BC cause BC on ps3 IMO is bad. The screen is way too shaky it drives me crazy. My ps2 is mainly used for FFXI (which i love).

  • wow, what an incredible number of comments. you guys really feel a lot for this stuff.

so many great points were made, I just had to add more.

    1. Final Fantasy XIII
The sentimental value of the FF franchise for long-time rpg gamers is big. When you’re weaned on classics like FF VII and up, it takes out a lot in you to be told that the latest in the series is being ported out to a rival worldwide (except Japan). Whether or not the FF franchise is declining or if FFXIII will be fantastic is irrelevant.

    2. Gratitude
Unlike health care, the concept of gratitude for consumer products is unfounded. Sure, ppl establish brand loyalty if the brand offers the buyer a great experience. Unfortunately it only takes 1 bad thing to spoil the experience. If you didn’t get a perfect experience at the clinic, you’d still go back. In Sony’s case it seems there are a lot more issues.

    3. Making Business Sense
To play the devil’s advocate, maybe it makes business sense to pursue the First Person Shooters and neglect the RPGs. Yes, they piss off the loyal fan base (myself included), but what’s a few thousands to the millions of players?

    4. The Tale of 2.1 Systems
Not many ppl can afford multiple systems, especially a PS3 AND 360 at the same time. The hype of PS3 and 360 is well-founded, so having one system with a dominant number of great games is important.
As for the PS2, it’s a surprisingly resilient system and many people still buy the games. For Sony to announce the lineup was a great business decision.

Lastly, I read this interesting article on GamaSutra, worth checking out. “Sony says ‘Just Wait’ – But Can Consumers?”
    http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=19433

  • I hate to say this, I really do, but today left me almost wishing I had a 360 instead of a PS3. And that really bothers me alot. Dont get me wrong, I love Sony’s machine and I’m excited about all the stuff shown in Sony’s presentation yesterday, but I’m not so certain about the PS3’s future. It just seems that the whole 360 bandwagon keeps steaming ahead strongly, and Sony always seems to be a few miles behind…always trying to play catch up. Am I wrong to feel this way? Is Sony really that far behind? I guess I just need someone to hold me and tell me that everything is going to be all right.

  • Sony had a really good conference and they focused on the right things for the most part.
People aren’t feeling that it was very good for two main reasons.. they didn’t have any dirty tricks up their sleeve to counter MS’s obvious attack on Sony. (Though I, for one, am glad they didn’t stoop to war tactics and instead just put faith into their own product.)

The second was Jack Tretton.. I mean absolutely no disrespect to the man but he was unenthusiastic, boring, not funny, awkward.. tripped up a lot.
Hosting a conference like that is no easy task and who knows what he has been though recently. (For all we know he ate some bad sushi and was on the can all night.)
But yeah.. I think it really hurt the overall feel of an otherwise pretty solid showing.

That and the fact that the Resistance 2 level they demoed looked terribly unpolished and ugly.

  • RATCHET AND CLANK ON PSN FOR 14.99??
    I just peed my pants!!!!

  • Rely disappointing how Europeans don’t get all nice stuff like the US people do. I think I’ll back my bags and move to the States :)

Some one should start collecting names to sort out how many would be interested in e.g. the video store and other stuff we are currently missing.

    Would this not make sense?

  • Ok, I have seen it completely, with patience, so, here are my thoughts…

Sony had the best conference except for the Shock factor, I mean, Yeah, MS stole (no, wait, they paid for it) FF XIII’s exclusivity, but that’s as far as they could, why?, cause they have nothing, I know GOW2 and stuff, but if you take a look at what they showed, it’s just a lot of 3rd party multiplatform games, instead, Sony focused on their IP’s, and some new stuff we freaks already knew, because we spend half the day digging for info, but for me Sony did the right thing focusing on their own products, that I must to say are a LOT.

MAG, caught me by surprise, it’s nice to have more MP madness, and I love the video thing, even when it’s taken from MS…dunno if I’ll use it much, but it’s nice to have that on the go…

Jack, well, the guy lacks that spark to keep things interesting, he’s a good frontman, but too calm…

    Overall, good presentation…

    Resistance on te PSP: GREAT!!!

  • when i originally got my video games systems, i said to myself, i’ll get the 360 for my shooters, the ps3 for my rpgs, and my wii for smash bros.

only two of my three systems have followed through. the closest thing to an rpg my ps3 has seen asides from ps2 games is folklore, which didn’t quite fill my hunger for a great rpg experience.

maybe i’m part of a dieing breed of sony fans who grew up playing great rpg/adventure games on the ps1. but when i think sony, i don’t think fps.

  • i have to say one more thing before i go to bed. I LOVE SONY!!! that mag looks pretty cool, however, i’m really not into squad based combat or shooters, really. seeing that jim lee is doing a dc online game was awesome!! now, i’m a marvel fan, but that game looks sweet. i just want more action and adventure games. can’t wait for little big planet…keep up the good work sony, and have a beer…you’ve earned it!! p.s. GHOSTBUSTERS!!!

  • AMAZING 562 comments and not 1, not 1 comment from sony themselves.

  • I’m sticking with the PS3, I hate M$ too much to consider a 360, and WII is officially now a console targeting on the casual market only, despite the fact I own a WII, it ain’t my main console.

Sony if only you could provide us RPG fans with our needs, you’d be my hero’s! You made the PS2 to be my all time favorite console with the most games than on any other “console” for “everyone”.

I shouldn’t have to look at M$ line up and freaking out for the fact that they stole our precious RPG’s. “We” could have had Tales of Vesperia now, “we” could have be looking forward to Star Ocean IV. Almost 2 years on the market and next month we’re getting our very first exclusive SRPG: Disgaea 3, September Valkyria Chronicles (PS3) and in October Eternal Sonata. Good, but when you’re looking at the entire PS3 line up you see nothing but blasting fun for the shooter whores.

Let Level 5 wrap up White Knight Chronicles already and let them create a Dark Cloud sequel. Make sure we’re getting Kingdom Hearts 3 exclusive and a Suikoden game and if Star Ocean IV is coming to the PS3 as well, better make the announcement “as soon as possible”.

  • Or guys, you’ll be losing a “lot” of fans!!!

  • Onna76 is right about the rpg front, looking back at ps1 and ps2 games, and even my psp games, easily over half of my games for all of these systems are rpgs. now when i look over at my ps3 collection, only ONE game out of my 12 is an rpg, and thats not even counting my psn downloads.

  • LOL silly mistake. I already found it weird, but Valkyria Chronicles which was shown as PSP game, won’t get a PSP release “as well”… The trailer shown as PSP game, was the trailer of the PS3 version… *Oooch* :-D

  • @ tsukasa1288 | July 16th, 2008 at 1:50 am

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Idem, I have my PS3 since December and I have now about 12 PS3 games (plus over 10PSN titles), with 1 non exclusive WRPG: Oblivion. The rest are all other genre’s. Check my PS2 collection and you have like 80%+ RPG’s.

  • Damn! Dead Rising will be in Wii la! No PS3

  • Good Bye Sony…i jump to the Microsoft 360 because you are completely disinterested of what you’re fans want…

  • Thanks for the laughs sony. Biggest joke in the industry as of the end of July 15th, 2008

  • still whining I see, go and look at motorstorm trailer, looks sick

  • Hello, I’m from Europe. Yes, that place over the pond where you have lots of PS3 owners. Remember us? No? Ah, thought as much.

    Thanks.

  • if i see another trailer for KILLZONE and LBP i will cry….you cannot sell a console on these two titles alone…..

As for LBP, it looks like fum for 10min, after that…..bargin bin…..

Try to come up with something innovative and new in the world of gaming…..it seems its all about FBS and driving games.

  • Okay, when the heck is Europe going to get the video download service?

People outside the US are “not” able to download movies from out of the US video download store. IP addresses are being checked and blocked.

    SO NOT FAIR!!!

  • Hey guys, don’t worry, we have ARC THE LAD, WILD ARMS, SUIKODEN, STAR OCEAN, DRAGON QUEST, VALKYRE, KINGDOMS HEART, FF, and many more RPG…..oh wait…this is PS3 forum…i forgot…there were all Ps2 games (exclusive)….wrong forum…apology….
just keep on bringing FPS…that is all we needed now. PS3….great job…what i am gonna do tonight with my PS3….mm…stream movies from my PC on my TV i guess…it work the best…for movies and it looks great…beside that…can we play game on PS3?? i can’t remember seeing my controller for long time now…..anyway, just pardon me..i shall go back play my xbox360 now.

  • Looks like the video service is US only for now- Canada is left out of the loop as well. Can we get some sort of ETA for it up here?

  • Honestly, the lack of RPGs on this system after 2 years is ridiculous. Disgaea 3 and Valkyria Chronicles (another tactics RPG with – gasp – shooter elemnts, what a suprise) just don’t cut it.

In other news, I purchased (traded in a mess of PS3 games and paid the difference) a 360 along with a ton of RPGs (Lost Odyssesy, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, Kingdom Under Fire) and Japanese-centric titles (Bulletwitch – she’s a witch who dresses scantily, can summon lightning and has a gun; what more do you need? A plot? Nah :) ). You know, the sort of titles that made me fall in love with the PS1 and 2.

Strange how Sony’s publishing decisions would be the catalyst to turn me on to MS’s machine. Even more ironic that I got a 360 with all the wasted investments (games) that I made with the PS3. I still have the PS3 and EOJ and Singstar, just because I can’t really trade those ones (cards and d/l songs). I also put a 250 gig hd in there too, and that’s money I’m not getting back either.

I also have a secret hope that in keeping the PS3, Sony will one day pull their head out of their a** and get back to making the games that attracted people to their systems.

There are more important and interesting things in life than shooting things. I actually find it a little insulting that Sony thinks that this is the only way to appeal to American/ European sensibilities.

    Cheers,
    – C

P.S. Anyone ever up for some EOJ leave me a message, I still play it sometimes.

  • Well the thing is this districted locking from video downloads has actually nothing to do with Sony but with local legalizations. So Sony is forced to lock it, or else I’m positively sure they wouldn’t, except on highly command from SCEE.

I’ve heard from a PSN friend (GGCAN) who’s from Candada (figuring out his ID now :-D), that on the 360 in Canada the people still don’t have any video downloads. While the US has already have it for a year.

That doesn’t sound good. I guess we’ll never get to see the video download service in Europe :-(

  • There are video downloads in Canada for the 360. The selection is kinda crap, but the movies are there. You heard wrong.

  • Looks like it I’ll tell him he’s been informing me “wrong”.

  • I’ll have to agree with Bastard11 wrt Jack Tretton. The poor guy exuded a “just let me get through this” attitude. He may be a good businessperson but a good trade show presenter he is not. He doesn’t take care of himself physically obviously. SCEA needs to find someone else to do the presentation.

Otherwise I thought Sony had the most content to present, but I also agree that Sony is not providing the level of support for its RPG fans that it needs to to start moving more PS3’s off the shelf. This is a gross oversight. I personally am not a big RPG fan but these folks need to be given their due !

  • I was hoping somehow that the video content wouldnt be as always restricted to USA , but I should have expected it. SCEE is next to useless. We have nothing compared to America. We dont have the different Store search functions (just by Genre), we dont have AS MUCH content, and now we dont have the video store. Great.

  • Would you prefer I said “incorrectly”, or that he provided you with “inaccurate information”. People who try at being pedantic on message boards when their posts are rife with grammatical errors (“highly command”, for example, and at least two fragmented sentences), usually end up looking pretty dense.

If that wasn’t your intent, ignore the flamage. I’m it was, I hope you brought some marshmallows along.

    Cheers,
    – C

  • Dude I’m from the Netherlands, be at least happy I “understand” English comparing to other Europeans.

  • @58 Christian399 thanks for letting me know about the movies for the 360. I don’t own a 360, but last I saw, they didn’t have the movie download feature.
It gives us hope at least for the PS3 down the road having movies in Canada too.

Anyways, here’s something I posted to another blogger in another blog (I’m not sure, but think it’s Canada’s CRTC that is holding this up, not Sony):

.if you’re in the US, it’s at the top of the store….if you’re in another country, you won’t have it on the PS3.

I logged onto the US store on my PC and did see the new icon, but when trying to view one of the TV shows description, it asked for my email and password and then gave me this message:

“PLAYSTATION®Store is not available in the selected country or region. ”

I’m from Canada and think like another poster commented, it’s the CRTC laws.

  • now this is why i am a sony fanboy

  • oh cool now we could stream videos from the ps3
    good job sony
its bad that the 360 has a a lot more in their store and they have netflix
thats disappointing now im going to have to buy xbox live for my xbox and an netflix acoount that really suck you guys

  • GGCAN guy first of all the xbox 360 has a lot alot of movie downloads and a lot of tv show you could watch from
example: the have southpark, all the disney movies(which are gay),history channel shows, they also have most of the reality shows in their and a lot more
Youre wrong you could download movies
    im not a 360 lover nor a ps3 lover
but i believe that sony should start getting its own ides
again i hate fanboys nor xbots im just a neutral playes

  • Well I was initially all excited about the video download service, but now that I realize we Canadians are getting the shaft, I’m revising that to basic contempt (except that the PSN downloadable R&C missions will rock).

  • michoacano2…..I knew they had movie downloads, but last I saw, they were only available to the US…

Christian399 made me aware that Canada now has this service (I didn’t realize), but advised it’s not great in Canada, like in the US.

So maybe in a year, PS3 will have the same ability.

It’s not Sony doing this, it’s our countries laws that don’t allow it until approved.

So possibly the 360 past with the CRTC in Canada here and Sony is applying for that same status.

    We’ll see in the future.

Right now it’s not that big a deal to me. I have the Bluray disc player and just rent them or get stuff that Bell Canada has available to view on Satellite.

  • Past should have read passed in my comment….sorry Christian399 :>}

  • We all need to put up or shut up.

Personally, I’ve decided to get a 360 since Sony obviously isn’t interested in providing the games that I want… which is fine.

Do I get an Elite or wait for the new 60 Pro ? Hmm. the Elite is black and comes with an HDMI cable *cough*Sony*cough*, but the 60GB Pro is cheaper and will most likely come with revised hardware.

What to do… what to do ?

  • TristanMike, it’s your decision and for gaming I see your point.

However, having to by the wireless separately and then a Bluray player separately (on and on) I still think the PS3 is the best deal out there.

I like the gaming that I’ve seen on the PS3, but use my PS3 for so much more than just gaming.

    Up to you though….

  • israel still doesn’t have a playstation store….

  • Backwards compatibility on future systems is very important to me. I have a 60GB PS3, and it upscales PS1 and PS2 games very nicely. I would pay more for a PS3 with those features. If no future PS3 has BC, could Sony please make a PS2 that can tether with the PS3 to offer a unified, upscaling BC solution via PS3 XMB?
