1.02 – MAG trailer shown. It bears repeating – 256 players! Land and air battles going on (with paratroopers), really, it’s pretty huge. Big applause.

12.59 – A brand new game revealed for the first time – MAG. Andy Beaudoin from Zipper Interactive details this Massive Action Game (get it?). MAG will support up to 256 players (!) MAG is squad-based, with teams broken down into 8 players, with fine-tuned soldier types, ongoing campaigns and character growth.

12.58 – InFamous – it’s up to you to save or destroy an entire city. Trailer shown with in-game footage. Looks awesome, though I invite you to judge for yourself when you see the video. Out Spring 09.

12.51 – Developers from Treyarch, EA Tiburon, Ubisoft, Bethesda, 2K Marin, and Lucas Arts are shown on video talking about how much more they’ve learned about programming for the PS3, and how that’s going to pay off in games like Far Cry 2, The Force Unleashed, Prince of Persia, Call of Duty World at War, Madden NFL 09, and Fallout 3. “We’re just beginning to scratch the surface of what PS3 is capable of.”

12.48 – New Hardware package: the 80 GB Core Pack coming this fall $399 – 40 more GB at that price, plus DualShock 3.

12.46 – Lee: “You can stop imagining now.” Video shown featuring lots of DC Legends like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Joker, and more.

12.43 – Mr. Lee is a HUGE MMO fan, been playing since Everquest began… so this is a dream project for him. “Imagine being able to create your own superhero… and help Batman take on the Joker… that’s a cool image.”

12.41 – SOE – Sony Online Entertainment – bringing titles to PlayStation 3. Jim Lee (of comic book fame) on stage now to preview DC Universe online. He’s doing 1-armed push-ups. Don’t hurt your inking hand!

12.35 With an install base of over 35 million worldwide, many more PSP games are on the way. Montage shown, featuring Patapon 2, The Force Unleashed, Super Stardust Portable, Madden 09, LocoRoco 2, NBA 09 The Inside, Lego Batman, and Buzz Master Quiz.

12.33 – For the first time ever revealed – Resistance for PSP… Resistance Retribution! Out Spring 2009.

12.31 – On to the PSP – announcing a new PSP Entertainment Pack – in October we’ll launch the Ratchet & Clank Size Matters pack, which includes the PSP-2000, National Treasure 2, a 1GB memory card, and echochrome.

12.30 – Eric demonstrates how to copy movies to the PSP. You can do this either through a PS3, or through the PC Store. BTW, this video download service will be available TONIGHT (applause). We’ll be adding new titles each week.

12.29 – “How long will it take to download an SD movie?” The answer is about an hour for a 2 hour movie. However, with progressive downloading, you can begin watching your video almost instantaneously.

12.25 – Eric Lempel takes the stage (you remember him, right), to show a live demo of the video download service – it’s part of the existing PLAYSTATION Store – there’s a new video tab. Each studio has a page. Eric shows how to buy, rent, or preview a movie.

12.23 – Jack talks about the new video download service. On Day 1 – Sony Pictures, Fox, MGM, Lions Gate, Warner Brothers, Disney, and more will have content available. A huge differentiator – you can take movies and tv on the go via PSP.

sonypresser12

12.19 – Jack Tretton PlayStation Home: “Your patience will be more than rewarded.” We’ve got great publisher support on game-specific spaces. A new video is debuted showing more of what Home’s experience will be all about.

12.17 – Gran Turismo TV introduced – racing video content coming to Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, shows like Top Gear and other original content in Hi Def. Gearheads will definitely be all over this. Lots of international content. Launches August 1st.

12.14 – Jack Tretton: “We’re not interested in filling up our store with games that nobody wants to play, just so we can say ‘we have the most games.'” He follows this up with a trailer showing a number of upcoming PSN games like PixelJunk Eden, Fat Princess, Crash Commando, PAIN Amusement Park, Flower, Ragdoll Kung-Fu and Siren: Blood Curse.

12.11 – 180 million pieces of downloaded content since launch. New stuff coming to the PLAYSTATION Store – Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty. “Like a summer blockbuster – high quality, less expensive.” Q4B will answer the questions to Clank’s disappearance at the end of RCF: Tools of Destruction. Price will be $14.99.

12.09 – PLAYSTATION Network – we’re instituting a single sign on this fall – online on a PC, a PSP, PS3. Check your friends list on a PC (I think a few of you have asked for that).

12.07 – New PS2 bundle coming this fall – a new Lego Batman Bundle, along with a Justice League movie, for $149.

12.03 – Let’s talk about PS2: More than 130 new titles coming to PS2. Not bad for a 9 year old system.

12.01 – Among the announcements – we’re turning our attentions to Latin America… and a announcement of PS3 Greatest Hits. Huge applause for sackboy, Alex, and LBP!

11.58 – Alex Evans of Media Molecule is out on the stage to help Jack work through the business side of things… more on this later…

sonypresser10

11.56 – Ted has left the stage, Jack Tretton is back out to talk about user generated content. “We’ve seen a glimpse of that future – it’s called LittleBigPlanet.”

11.54 – More, even huger enemies/ships shown in an R2 video. An Idaho location has been mentioned as well. Add that to Chicago, San Francisco, and the California redwood forests.

11.53 – PS video from the Press Conference will be available on PSN, you’ll wanna make sure to see this.

11.51 – Did I mention this thing is huge? Cheers from the audience as the live demo ends.

11.50 – Ted is taking on a 300 foot leviathan (you may have read about this in GamePro) with a rocket launcher. On paper it’s one thing – in full motion, it’s something else entirely…

11.48 – Here’s a look at Resistance 2, Ted Price from Insomniac Games takes the stage.

11.46 – Jack Tretton: “If PlayStation in 2007 was all about hardware, PlayStation in 2008 is all about software.”

11.45 – Jack Tretton: “The PLAYSTATION 3 is the most complete and future-proof Blu-ray player available.”

PlayStation Press Conference

11.41 – OK back in my seat, as CEO Jack Tretton reacquaints us with the history of PlayStation and Sony Computer Entertainment. “We take a longer look ahead.”

The press conference is just about to get started and I’m up on stage playing Metal Gear Solid 4. You might be able to see me as soon as G4 starts their live video stream (look to the left side of the stage).

I’ll keep updating this post with news from the event, so check back often or keep your eyes on our twitter feed for the latest.

  • I consider myself a dedicated Playstation fan, and I have to say that I was a little underwhelmed. There was very little that we didn’t already know, and I was just waiting for a massive announcement at the end, but while MAG looks amazing, I was hoping for a little more.

    Positives:
R2 looks to be everything I hoped for. Very nice trailer.
    R&C QFB looks fun.
    Resistance PSP!
    MAG looks very cool.
    Video service today!

    Reservations:
    I hope GOW3 footage is not pre-rendered.
    Where is “real” motion control?
PSP needs dual analogue control, touch screen & Flash storage.

Overall, not bad, but I can’t help thinking that M$ may have had a better press conference. Perhaps Sony will have some more in store for us @ TGS?

I look forward to seeing some of you guys at King Taco tonight, after having some time to digest all of this.

  • Even Amer amer F*G came.

  • Did White Knight get canceled or something? The didn’t even show a clip of that game.

  • Hello everyone.
I am ps3 from the first day, i paid 1000 american dollars to get my hands on this machine, because as many i believed that it was worth it.
Now, the reality is that about 80% of the games for the ps3 are both for the ps3 and xbox360.
With final fantasy coming to the 360 more people arent going to buy a ps3 now. So why should i be worried uh?

Because less people buying ps3= less fanbase
    less fanbase= less exclusives
    less exclusive= more multiplat games
more multiplat= why the heck did i bought a ps3

    Now to summarise all this:

WHY DID I BOUGHT A PS3 FOR 2 THE PRICE OF THE OTHER CONSOLE, IF THE OTHER CONSOLE GETS THE SAME GAMES AS ME WITH EVEN BETTER QUALITY AND DOWNLABLE CONTENTENT EXCLUSIVE????

  • I am devoted to my investment, but sorry, MS press conferences seemed more polished.

I know stuffy executives are not always as enthusiastic as they mean to be. Nevertheless, it was genuine.

With little new content to discuss your really have to oversell existing stuff to your audience. Not sure I felt that.

Sounds like we need to watch out for SONY at E3’09.

  • Where’s the big Square announcement?

    Where are my RPG’s?

Where is the announcement about the flood of PSOne titles coming to the network?

Does the new 80 gig have BC via software?

Only thing I got out of this was a few good games on PSP. which I’m happy about btw, what was formerally dead has signs of life.

Everything else was great news, but I NEED AN RPG!!! I’m real close to buying an xbox as a result of this nonsense. Year 2 and we have yet to see a jRPG.

  • You guys would rather have MAG than Socom4, which obviously isn’t in development?

  • I am excited about video store with PSP playback too…I can watch movies at work and school…I mean …er…uh…while I am on a long trip…yeah that is what I meant…trip…yeahhhhh

  • at KazeEternal

we have Folklore…that is a jRPG…have you tried it?

  • Sony redeemed(to me you never lost it).

  • Oh yeah! PSN also had a very good showing to. Good stuff for the PSN. Though they didn’t talk about trophy support for all those PSN titles. Which kind of sucks.

  • I’m not surprised we didn’t see anything from SquareEnix. It’s not like they aren’t developing games for the PS3, because we know that they are. I think Sony decided that they didn’t want to reward SquareEnix by giving them a bunch of press coverage after they embarassed Sony by taking away exclusivity of FF13.

  • Yea guys MAG will be great! 256 players with no mics on the PSN! Squad based gaming when you’re the only guy in your squad with a mic! Awesome fun action & communication right there..oh wait! Cant wait!

They should announced an official PS3 headset or something…and JRPGs

  • Yeah we got psn thats great but if your never on playing games whats the point of all the psn crap

  • @ Ghostm

I am sure they will have it…they realize that if you add trophies they will almost instantly sell

I am excited about SSHP (Super Stardust Highly Portable)lol

  • Why is everyone complaining about FF13 being stiolen by MS
first off it wasnt stolen the game is multiplatform
and secondly i understand your anger but you have to look at it this way, so what they have FF13 we also get it. does that change the fact whether you will get it or not?
it really shouldnt. If this changes your opnion from im def getting this game to, how g@y i dont want it if 360 has it then that is sad. PS3 is the leading version ok, i would exspect it to be superior compared to the 360 since its the one being worked on. The 360 hasnt even started in development and it will be a port of the PS3 version.

Good job at E3. I for liked it and was very pleased with the video store coming out tonight.
BTW what internet were you guys using down there. lol it worked really fast on the pS3.
Ok here is a question? how often will we recieve show/movies on the store? i mean seeing thta you guys have a ton of companies for it i would exspect one almost every week. And will you guys dvertise it? i mean i dont really need it but i could see it saying it in every movie commercial(or at least PSN upcoming films trailers) that at the end of them its available on DVD, Blueray, and The playstation network ##/##/##
. And any chance that we will get video early then when they are released at retailers?

  • what’s with all the whining? there’s a lot of sweet stuff coming, and as was said a few times… 8 more years coming — A 360 lasts maybe a week before red-ringing.

I’m not sure what I’m most excited about. I like the shooters, so I’m very excited about R2 and MAG.

As has been said, some of the coolest things are the NEW titles like LBP. I don’t care about Final Fantasy 97 or whatever, give me something I’ve never seen before!

  • @ 211

Yeah we have Folklore but what else?

  • I Guess i am going to have to wait until TGS for any news on JRPGs. Rise of the Argonauts looks like it might has some potential.

  • I WANT MIRROR’S EDGE NOW NOW NOW NOW

  • @ 193 are you in the UK?

I’ll sell for £200 with ratchet and clank, COD4 and burnout. I’ll chuck in my PS eye and dual shock 3

  • I AM SOO PISSED
I WAS RECORDING THIS ….AFTER LUNCH I CAME BACK TO WATCH THE REST
AS SOON AS THEY MENTIONED THE MAG GAME COMING OUT, IT STOPPED RECORDING AND SENT ME BACK TO LIVE TV, WHICH WAS ASAM SESSLER CONCLUDING THE SHOW!!! I WANT TO KNOW WHAT MAG IS!!!!! AHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • @ 215 VOOZI
sony is planning on bundling headset with PS3 now i think
and also idont think it will be a problem if sony plans this smart by having a bundle option with it like socom.

  • No live demo of Killzone 2? I’m surprised.

God of War III — One word: Epic.

  • OMG SONY.. I am sooo sorry for ever doubting you lol.. You just made up for the loosing the exclusivity of FFXIII :D i mean 256 players :O :D first broke the record with 40 players, then record with 60 players… now with 256 player :) the smile on my face becomes bigger and bigger :D

  • And BTW. Yea losing FF sucks. Verus for now is still exclusive but before you go declaring MS winners. FIRST WATCH THEIR CONFERENCE! It was really lame all they had was their last announcment. THATS IT! I watched the last part of NINTENDOS but nothing that’ll make me say i want a wii. Im not interested in playing invisible instruments or wagging a controller. Call me oldschool but it just doesnt appeal to me. If didnt own any of the consoles and had to pick one based off of the e3 conferences, I would definitely pick sony. Not being a sonyfan but the console does more of what i wanted to do and it has a more variety in their games. plan and simple. Go watch MS conference on g4tv.. it really did suck.

  • GoW3 was great to see. Movie purchases and rentals beginning tonight is great. The new core package should generate a lot of new sales and put it right there with M$ when you relize what you’re getting for your money. They didn’t show off any JRPG’s for the PS3 that’s just so wrong. Especially after yesterday. . don’t know what to say. It was ok ! !

  • @225 fusen
There is a demo on the E3 floor :)

  • to 225

    Epic what?
    EPIC CGI trailer??

  • Underwhelming but I’ll accept it. I like that the video store allows movie purchases. It will give it something over XBL.

I think its pretty safe to say that Resistance 2 will be completely awesome… it did not look nearly as awesome as Gears of War 2 though.

I am excited about the Ratchet and Clank PSN game coming out. PSN defintely has better games than XBLA.

There was no announcement on a PSHome release date and that upsets me. I mean we were promised this last October in 2007. Where is it? My Sony fanboyism is still boiling after that FFXIII bombshell, surprise launching HOME would have made me forget about it.

    @Ghostm

All the PS3 has done its whole life cycle is catch up and I am really get fed up with it. The video downloads is something I have had on my 360 for over a year and I have had “in game XMB” and “trophies” since launch on my 360.

MGS4 is the only I have as a PS3 owner to brag about. It is the only thing that seperates me from being a retard and wasting $500 of my dollars on an system that cannot deliver the same content than a under-powered broken piece of crap.

Everyone feel free to add in to this list on things Sony had to play catch up on:
    -Rumble
    -Trophies
    -In-game XMB
    -In-game soundtrack
    -Video download service
-background downloading (for the retards like my self who bought it at launch)

Even the trophies are not caught up to achivements. I can earn achievement on all my 360 games, but only a few on my PS3.

God I am getting angrier as I type so I am gonna call it quits before I lose it.

    Sony, STEP IT UP!

  • It was a good show. Love the movie store and Life with PlayStaton thing. I liked it, but hopefully you guys can work out a deal with Square to get another game ( or maybe EA/Bioware so we can get Mass Effect and KOTOR! )

  • That was just embarassing!

Sony you’ve done it again. MSoft have owned E3 and stolen your thunder.

Once again you have failed to deliver. I’m going back to Msoft. Perhaps when you actually listen to the gaming community, and employ people who actually give a flying [DELETED] about gaming you MAY redeem yourselves.

That was just embarrassing. Resi 2 was the best you could do?!

Do we care about movies? no we dont!! we dont care?

When is Home out? 2010?! PS4???!!!

When are you going to sort out the PS European Store?

Where was KZ2,where was the fall releases? the RPGs?

    Just awful!! Sony, you suck!

  • Honestly, I am dissapointed with the games. Seriously no new blockbuster game announcements, no hat trick to steal one from Microsoft like they did to you with Final Fantasy XIII? I am starting to loose faith in you Sony!

Where was some coverage for BioShock’s content or some new video of Killzone II demonstrating multiplayer mode or some cool new gameplay modes. Where were the RPG’s? I am getting tired of shooters!

  • I agree that we are still light on RPG’s, other than that Sony showed some awesome stuff!!!

They beat the other 2 conferences by a long shot. Just the fact they used LBP for their slide show made their presentation better than the other two.

  • @225

Nop…As usual Sony gives ABSOLUTELY 0 release dates. [DELETED]?!?!?!?? Where is

    1) Home
    2) Killzone 2 multiplayer details
    3) ANY GOOD NEW GAMES

Megaton of E3: FFXIII on 360.

Sony’s comeback: Um….Uh…Er…LittleBig Planet! Oh yeah, Resistance 2. Plus, you get to see Jack Tretton’s horrible comedy act!

    E3 = About the Games
    Sony’s E3 = About….An excuse for a conference..

  • Pre-rendered teasers, R2 being shown way too early (fog below buildings yuck) and a lack of anything surprising.

Where’s Legend of Dragoon 2, Eight Days, Parasite Eve 3, Heavy Rain, ICO 2, Fear 2, Syphon Filter? Are these not being made for the PS3? If not, get them made. These are what people are waiting for.

Heck you didn;t even mention Prince of Persia.

Where’s Mark of Kri? How about more Heavenly Sword? Uncharted? Twisted Metal?

All you showed was basically what we’d seen before.

The Little Big Planet level was the highlight of the show for me.

  • is mag from bongi

  • @227 WESTSIDE
    i agree
MS E3 did suck (not saying that because i love sony)
    same with the nintendo
did any one else fall asleep during the nintendo conference?
The only one that was entertaining was the sony (once again not because i love sony). They revealed some 1st party games and ect.

  • Quite possibly the most underwhelming conference yet.

Where was the jaw dropping announcement? Not one, everything said today has been heard before.

I dunno… Maybe Leipzeig 2009 will have better (AND NEW) news.

  • Haha, y’know, there was a slight bit of worry in me yesterday when I sold my PS3 after hearing about FFXIII. I was worried there would be some huge wonderful announcement to counter this, like a FFVII remake or a slew of J-RPG’s or something. Maybe some other new, promising non-shooter games. Now I can rest easy though, because Sony, your E3 conference was complete and total garbage.

You know what, I hate Microsoft as a company, I always have, but I’m taking this money I got from my PS3 and buying a 360 because that’s where all the good games are. That’s where the good Japanese developed games are and YOU are the next-gen Japanese system. How damn pathetic is that? Microsoft have made you look like little sissies this entire gen and the announcement of FFXIII was them slapping you after a beat down.

Keeping wasting all your damn time and energy on shooters all of this non-gaming bs all you want. In the end you’ll know what most people learned a long time ago. If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it. You had a working formula with the PSX & PS2, but you’ve blown it with the PS3. Oh how the mighty have fallen. I want to be sad about it because I’ve always been a PlayStation gamer, but Sony’s stupidity is so ridiculous that all I can do is laugh all the way to GameStop to buy my 360 and RPG’s. Ah, it’s going to be a fun week. So long, Sony.

  • Babies! I enjoyed the presser. I truly think it is time we stopped whining. Sony will be fine. We have three systems on the market doing well concurrently. Give them a break, FF is multiplatform, not lost. We got Bioshock, soon a new IP from Cliff Blezinski, be grateful we are not nintendo fans. Who wants to buy my Wii?

  • people they announced 2 rpg entranel sorta and a tales today before event started

  • Well, nice show… i like the VideoStore … but when does the real world (non-us) get this?

One final note, I WAS a Square Enix Fan… the final reason to quit my FF11 Account ;) BTW I own a xbox360 too … SE – it’s just untrustworthy, but in the end it’s all about money … right? (to much loss because you can’t deliver on time ?)

  • ps3 60gb 4 sale hardley used comes with no official headset because u dont need 1 due to no x game chat. ms new dash board looked rude

  • @Asshandler, that wasn’t fog below that was the water that flooded the city.

  • I was expecting much more than that. No Jrpgs.

Sony, you better change your ways or lots of people will leave you.

I don’t like the way M$ do their business but I must to admit they are doing well for their fans.

  • I hate to say it, but I was not overly impressed. I really think that Sony fell short this E3. They were not able to match the thunder that Microsoft had with announcing FFXIII to the 360. They spoke about third party exclusives on the PS3, but than made almost no mention of them.

MAG looks like it will be sick, but honestly its just another shooter. The market on the PS3 is already filled primarily with shooters. I really just wanted to see something else.

They spoke about how 2008 will be the year for software. Than where is it? All they spoke about was a few games that we have known about for over a year. Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, SOCOM, etc… Nothing really made me go WOW.

Honestly the best part of the show for me was the Little Big Planet presentation of the sales numbers. I honestly thought that was genious.

  • GRATS!! i cant wait for MAG!! day 1 purchase for me. Excellent line up for 2008!!

  • Thanks for the live updates Jeff. My favorite part was definitely the LittleBigPlanet version of the sales figures. Very creative.

I was a little disappointed that all of the content discussed was so “far off”. I would have been more interested in the PSN games revealed (Rag Doll Kung-Fu, Fat Princess, etc.) and less on the far away games (MAG, GOW III, inFamous). Or at least some in-game footage.

People want info NOW. That’s why the video store announcement was so cool. Also, tell Jack Tretton to stop being so nervous on stage. He does just fine!

  • I love the Insomniac guys but R2 did not look that great in the gameplay video.
It looked very slow and boring, washed out and the water looked horrible below.
