Wow. I should say that again. Wow! I would like to give a huge thank you from the team here at SCEA, Japan Studio and BONES Studio for making Xam’d: Lost Memories episode 1 the top video download over the PlayStation Network for the week of E3. We couldn’t have asked for a better reception to the service or the series, and you made it happen.

For those that followed E3 this year, and I’m pretty sure that’s most of you here, Xam’d: Lost Memories premiered exclusively last week at the launch of the new video service on the PlayStation Network. For those of you not familiar with BONES studio, they are the creators of the great anime series Full Metal Alchemist and Eureka SeveN as well as many others. For anime fans, you know who you are, the name should already be recognizable. For those who haven’t seen their work yet, do yourself a favor and take a look at the new trailer we’ve got on the PLAYSTATION Store!

We are extremely excited to be working with BONES Studio and Sony’s Japan Studio on bringing this showpiece exclusively to the PlayStation Network. This truly is an original piece, by masters of their art, and it’s only available to you PlayStation 3 and PSP fans!

So gear up for the full two season, 26 episode run. Episodes will be releasing weekly, so enjoy the ride. I will be back here soon with a Q&A from BONES studio, so keep your eyes peeled.

  • would have bought this If the video store worked for Puerto Rico…

  • Add one more to the “fix the price vote,” the pricing needs to be redone. A subscription would be an even better idea.

  • Yeah, 1.99 per episode is pretty crazy. Isn’t it possible to just get a whole season for a less price or something? We’re not getting any physical items after all so the cost could come down I’d assume.

Also, the more exclusive episodes/movies we can get the better as well and considering Sony Pictures…couldn’t they stick to either the PS Video store only or dvd/bluray?

  • Argentina doesn’t have access to the Store either.

I know it has something to do with the law, but come on…

Is that Sony’s attempt to support Latin America?

About the videos. It should be another option: “Rent with Choice of Purchase”. Let’s say, 2.99 for the episode for rent. Then you have 24hs to decide if you want to buy it. And then the rent price should be subtracted from the whole price.

I do agree it’s a bit pricey. And I wanted to buy Arrested Development, Family Guy, etc, but I can’t access the freaking video store.

Can Sony be kind enough to let us know which are the requirements to have access to the video store?

  • We need more anime!!!

  • I’m sure someone at Sony or SCEA is considering a membership fee option to allow free rentals or discounted purchase prices… only makes sense to offer such an option.

Why not tie this to the Qore membership fees or something.

Gives us something to save some cash at the same time provide you with a steady stream of revenue.

  • can we buy these episodes?? can ya put this option cuz i really want to buy them its pretty good imo..

  • we need a option to buy them plzzz

  • Even though I am just repeating what has been said her numerous times but….. Love the anime, please either lower the price or offer for purchase. If the price remains the same I doubt you will see the same numbers next week because I and many others won’t find it worth it.

  • if we could save it to our HD then i’d be all on this. it looks really cool and looks like it’d be incredible on my tv but $4 for rental only with no option to save it and watch it whenever you want?

that kind of killed my excitement for wanting to check it out.

  • I don’t often respond to these things but some of the comments are so below the average IQ I had no choice. One this is the US blog this is for SCEA not SCEE. You need to complain to your own regional company. SCEA has nothing, NOTHING to do with Europe.

Music if you guys are so interested in custom sound tracks than you should take time to read about it. It has to be implemented by the developers. Meaning NOTHING old unless patched will have music. That should save you alot of time in testing. Apply some brain power instead.

  • Will we be able to keep the episodes or will it still be restricted to rentals only? i’D reallylike to keep these and not just have it as a rental

  • Ive watched fullmetal alchemist and eureka7 many a times and never heard of them but all the same these anime a great and i be this one is to.

  • i too am disappointed in botht e pricing of the PSN videos and also the policy for watching rented movies–

I mean, you can only watch it twice? once when you first watch it and then the second time HAS TO BE WITHIN 24 hours?

are you kidding me? even blockbuster let;s you watch em again and again until an entire week is up..

hopefully the store will benefit from our feedback!

  • Gah seems like its only rentals, come on Sony let us download and keep this thing, it looks so interesting, but its kinda wrong to make us pay a rental fee for a show thats exclusive to the PSN, maybe this is a way keep it PSN exclusive and not wind up on the net but im not going to follow this for long if its solely for rental

  • hmmm..

i just noticed the poster’s idea to link the membership of Qore to a monthly membership of unlimited rentals at the PSvideo store..

    great idea!

  • I have a question. When can i buy the episode for $1.99 instead of renting it for more?

  • This is so awesome guys, I’m excited to hear about video for Canada if you guys have the time to explain anything.

  • Puerto Rico users need this!!! I want to have movie downloads too!!!!

  • Give Puerto Rico the movie service!! We need it to see this anime!!!!

  • So I checked out the first episode of Xam’d, and I really liked it. Unfortunately, I won’t be renting anymore. I simply cannot justify spending $78 on something that I will never own.

I would, however, be more than happy to rent the series for $26 or $30. So hopefully you will add a rent the season option similar to what Qore does.

Personally, I think this would be in your best interest because I (and many others) will most likely buy the series on DVD or Blu-ray as well.

If you don’t do this then people will either pirate it or wait for the Blu-ray or DVD release. Either way you will miss out on money that you could have had.

  • It looks like a good anime but i would like to know when i will be able to purchase the spisodes instead of renting them.

  • Are we going to get a DVD/Bluray release when it’s over? (releasing bluray would in essence keep it PS3 only).

I love anime but I haven’t rented Xam’d (even though I heard it’s great and I loved E7 and FMA) because it’s simply that: a rental. I’m not going to pay $4/episode (HD anime is very nice) to only have it as a rental and not be able to transfer it to my PC to burn as a hardcopy or anything.

If you publish it on Bluray count me in for a purchase.

  • When are we getting this in the Euro PS Store?

  • As other have said, something has to be done about the pricing. I rented the first episode in SD and even that was a hard price to justify for something 25 minutes long that I could only have for 24 hours. Everything needs to be purchasable and have more compatibility than just PS3/PSP. At the current price I’ll have to wait for the Blu-ray if it comes.

  • I would love to rent some anime hd content but I’m latin american so I’m out. Mi band with sucks so I except to bring some big time to download it.

Hope to see something for us as you promised in the past E3.

  • I hate you so much right now sony sooooo much hate are we ever gonna get this in australia or do we get the ass end of the stick from you guys like every other big multinational entertainment comapany.

  • Until you give us the option to watch it in it’s original language with or without subtitles I’m not interested.

  • I would like previews on more TV shows and especially movies.

I would like a monthly subscription service with unlimited rental downloads.

I would like to be able to buy who season of TV shows (and on HD as well), not just single episodes.

I would like PSN cards widely available.

And of course I would like more content and more studios.

  • Also some movies and shows are missing the description on certain screens, hopefully this would get fixed so there’s consistency.

  • @Silver
Xam’d is in Japanese with subtitles. My biggest complaint is the price right now.

  • I just can’t understand why the movies can’t come to japan. tv shows, fine keep ’em. but most of the movies will be on blu-ray at some point right? aren’t japan and america in the same region for blu-ray movies? if that is the case then i can’t see what the problem is. whats the problem, talk to us, come on!! and and also can you give me some word on my previous comment about xam’d? talk to uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuusssssssssssssssssss please

  • It might be #1 on the video store charts THIS WEEK, but I promise you that’s just out of people’s curiosity. There’s no way in hell you’re going to get people to pay 4 bucks a pop 26 times for a 25 minute RENTAL. That sort of pricing just begs “pirate me”. This will end up being the video store’s biggest flop, I assure you.

  • Xam’d looks great, but I don’t like throwing away money on rental, so when this is available for purchase, like the other Anime titles in the PSN Video Store I will buy it. I am so happy for the Video Store! I have already bought Anime and put it on my PSP for when I travel. GREAT JOB!

  • us poor australians can’t get the video store. so please put skype on the ps3 so we can talk with americans so they can tell us how good it is. ps3 can be the new video phone for the 21st century :D.

also is there bleach in the store. i heard that is really good but i have never seen it.

  • While I was totally interested in checking this out, I won’t be using the PSN Video Store until SONY gives it more bandwidth AND allows me to re-download purchased content.

I’m a consumer who’s very eager to utilize the PSN Video Store, but, once again, SONY has launched a service with some very crucial flaws that are holding me back.

  • i hope someone here at the blog is relaying our concerns to the PSN honchos!

  • I got one of the episodes to check out the PSN store. The series is great but the service leaves a lot to be desired. And if these episodes are ever for buy, I expect my rentals to be promoted.

    PSN Store Needs Better:

    1) Pricing. There need to be more pricing plans. $3.99 x 26 eps = too much

    2) DRM. Allow more flexible DRM, so I can copy from PS3 to PSP and remote play. Further the rental period is a little short.

    3) Previews. Every movie/series should have some short preview.

    4) More HD content.

  • when can i buy the episodes instead of renting them?

  • Wow. I didn’t notice that Xam’d was rental only for those prices. On second thought, you guys can keep your overpriced video store just for Americans.

  • I think its very awesome that theres an anime series on the Playstation Network… Just hope it comes weekly or even more frequently.

  • I am so looking forward to this game! Keiichiro has been one o my favorite producers since I first played it on a 15-inch tv with wrong cables, making the game black and white. True horror. Too bad I ain’t gonna touch this game until it goes Blu-Ray like sooo many others want it to.

Look, not that many people are going to download a 10 GB game, perhaps in five years when Terabyte hard drives and something better than broadband is standard. There’s just no way this is going to work. Or be profitable.

I know I can import the game from Asia but I’m quite a perfectionist so I want all my games to match up.

So it comes down to the question everyone keeps asking; Will there be a Blu-Ray release world-wide, or at least in Europe?

  • @Ice_Pick
Sorry got confused by another site. Thanks for clearing that up.

  • evolutionkakumei

Subscription service and more exclusive or same day/same week releases of anime airing from Japan.

  • I was very excited by the anime section on PSN, even more excited when I read the description of Xam’d. Then I saw the price for a RENTAL of Xam’d. What a total rip off, I am sorry but $3.99 to RENT a 25 minute episode is beyond ridiculous. $3.99 is more in line with the rental of a feature film.

You need to drop the price immediately. Even if it was to BUY, $3.99 would be outrageous. The going rate to buy NEW episodes on just about every DL service is $1.99 per, with a discount to people who buy the whole season or subscribe to the season in advance.

The strict DRM on purchased content is another HUGE turnoff for me. When will media companies realize that DRM is pointless? In fact, it’s detrimental. DRM encourages people to pirate media. And why shouldn’t they, when you can get a superior version of the product for free? Pirated media is transferable to as many devices as you want and has no limitations whatsoever, all while maintaining the same quality as the original.

Stardock proved to the world that DRM was pointless when they released Galactic Civ II for the PC without DRM. It went on to sell many more copies than predicted. I would venture to guess that the average “pirate” would gladly pay for media if it was DRM free. The older, less tech savvy generations of America willfully buy DRM media but in 10-15 years when my generation is running things (I’m 24), this won’t be the case. There is likely not a single person in the US under 25 that doesn’t know how to get pirated media. They do it because the pirated media is BETTER not because it’s free.

  • Stoopid PSN Video store… Why cant Canadians have it? we share the same region codes on games and movies, so why dont we have the video store… I REALLY want to see Xam’d, it looks so cool.
