Bionic Commando: Rearmed

Hey my friends, this is John D from Capcom. I’m pleased and honored to announce that Bionic Commando: Rearmed will become available on the PlayStation Store today for only $9.99! Ben Judd, producer extraordinaire, is so excited for this release that his head’s going to explode. And speaking of exploding heads (if you don’t get this reference, buy the game), here’s his very informative blog he prepared for all you PS fans:

Hello again fine folks of the PlayStation Blog. All good things must come to an end and with Rearmed arriving on the scene we need to finish out our all-too-short time here.

So by now you’ve seen the reviews and know EXACTLY what you are getting into. I would say that Bionic Commando Rearmed isn’t just an homage to a classic 2D game with a very innovative swing mechanic, but it’s a piece of where games started. For those who have never played a 2D game, for those who miss the classic “gamey” type games of old, for those just looking for an experience that is certainly worth your 10 dollars – Bionic Commando is it.

Even if you don’t have much interest in these types of games, I would ask you to try out the demo and decide for yourself. However, even if it’s a day one purchase for you, I would ask you to spend a little time to visit the Bionic Commando Community Site and introduce yourself. There are lots of fans of the game to share your grueling challenge room stories with, people in your area that you may be able to hook up with for a night of wild multiplayer action, and just an all around great community.

Bionic Commando is a game that I want as many people to play as possible, so it was very important to get a PSN version out the door for all of the Sony fans out there. And although I think it’s important to deliver the same experience to everyone, that doesn’t mean you can’t add in a few little things here and there to keep it interesting. So, one of the surprises is that the PSN version of Bionic Commando has an exclusive challenge room that you can only play on the PSN version of the game. It may not be the biggest of surprises, but we have tried to give a little something to the PSN users that they can keep to themselves. And with how hard this challenge stage is, it will certainly make for bragging rights!

PS Update #1: Generalissimo Killt
The charismatic leader of the Imperials, the self-styled “Generalissimo” Killt, is a former member of the FSA armed forces who became corrupted by the teachings of the long-dead dictator known as The Leader. Seeking to spread fascism across first the FSA, and then the world, Killt stumbled upon the blueprints for the ultimate doomsday weapon, known as Project Albatross, which had been created by a 20th century superpower that never survived to see it realized.

With the Albatross plans in his grasp, Killt sprung a surprise attack on the FSA, but the size of his forces compared to the might of the FSA means the conflict will be short-lived – unless the Imperials can activate the Albatross in time…

Bionic Commando

Medals
The FSA awards Medals to only the bravest soldiers for outstanding service above and beyond the call of duty. There are 12 medals to collect in total, with something to suit every type of soldier, from brawlers to thinkers.

Medal #4: Faster Than a Speeding Bullet
The Bionic Arm is a true utility device – not only does it provide many forms of attack and a nifty method of transportation, but thanks to the wonders of 2 dimensions it can also be used to defend yourself. Time your firing of the Bionic Arm’s grappling hook just right and you can stop the Imperials’ mysteriously slow-traveling bullets in mid-air! All you have to do get this Medal is to repeat that not once, not twice, but 100 times.

Bionic Commando: Rearmed

Super Joe’s Machine Gun
This legendary firearm is a prototype weapon developed by Super Joe himself. With all-round damage capability, a tremendous fire rate and seemingly unlimited ammo, this gun is perfect for clearing your way through the Imperial hordes. Only two things prevent Super Joe’s Machine Gun from being the perfect weapon – it requires a short reload period after each intense burst of fire, and nobody knows where Joe placed the prototype before he was captured by the Imperials. If you want to get your hands on this weaponry, your only option is to locate Joe.

John D again. I usually play and finish the games I work on. Not this one. I want to wait until the game launches, so I can enjoy every minute. I’ve played parts of this game and it really is that good.

So I’ve been hinting for quite some time that we have something in store for you PS Street Fighter fans. Well, I’m happy to announce that Street Fighter Alpha is available today in the PSone Classics section of the store for $5.99! Some of you may be asking, “Come on John D, was that’s it?” Um, if I say more, the PR team will kick my a$$, so I’ll leave it as a definitely, maybe. (Eh, my girlfriend made me watch that. It wasn’t that bad, shhh!)

As always, I’ll try my best to answer your questions and comments. I’ll be back to give you updates on Age of Booty, our strategic pirate party game, and Mega Man 9, the next installation of the classic series in 8-bit glory!

Till next time! Go-GO-Go-Bionic!

  • i’m sick of the troll who only plays games for trophy’s….have people forgotten the REAL reason to play games is for fun, not a D!*K measuring contest…BC:R is an excellent game and the work done on making it from the ground up is evident in every aspect.

BC has brought me back to the classic days of gaming where i would sit in front of my TV amazed at the awesome 8 bit graphics (lolol) that laid the foundation of my passion for gaming. Thanks Capcom and the whole team for putting good ol fashioned FUN into the current gen of consoles! Bring on Final Fight and i’ll send you my money instantly :D

  • wow your still answering questions…
    anyway

    @ 250

why are you calling BCR’s developers lazy if you have no idea how thropies work. You said that ssHD had thropies when it’s updated, maybe they worked on thropies way before it was anounnced. So don’t go around telling devs. that they are lazy if you have no idea how to imput these type of things to thier games.

  • Just bought BC:R. It’s so addictive. I suck at it, but it’s still fun :P. It certainly knows how to get my temper going lol.

I’ve never actually heard about this game before I watched the trailer. I must say, the catchy-well-synced trailer was what got me heh.

Can’t wait to see more classics ( some that I know haha ) re-made like this.

  • One of Johns biggest points is that if a game doesn’t include it from the get go, its exponentially more difficult to implement trophies. Well, SSHD did not have trophies in mind from the get go, and yet was still receieved in a timely manner.

You can say I lose all credibility, thats fine. One can be lazy and inefficient and still end up with a good final product. I mean, it isn’t that hard to discern when you look at a game like DMC4…a 25 minute install? Unnecessary. Capcom has a history of awesome games…and some curious design choices. I apologize if recognizing this trend discredits me or offends anyone at Capcom, but I call em like I see em.

As for trophies, as it stands, a game with trophies is more appealing than one without…at least while there are so few that support them. And announcing that BCR would support is like dangling the mouse in front of the cat. It was bait, and a lot of people took it.

Speaking of trophies: they had better be retroactive for BCR. Because while I enjoyed getting the 8 of 12 medals I’ve already earned, they are not things I want to have to do again, especially chasing down all those darn Yashichis and weapon upgrades…not to mention the hidden databse logs. If trophies are announced that aren’t retroactive, BCR is being deleted from my hard drive.

    • Madman, the difficulty in the implementation is not necessarily in the programming but the additional resources it requires. One of the challenges of including trophies was that the guidelines and requirements for trophy support wasn\’t available until recently. You are making a lot of false conclusions based on limited information and pure speculation. Your assumptions are as foolish as saying that the devlopment of BCR was lazy and inefficient.

  • @ 254
    think of it this way,

    1. bcd wasn’t done(maybe I wrong) when thropies were introduced. So the devs. are saying “should we put thropies in the game and possibly delay the game(for both platforms or just the psn vesion) because of it, or release the game as soon as possible without it and patch it later”.

sshd was done when thropies are introduced, so they don’t have to worry about time or finishing up the game. then again they were working with the add-on. but they don’t have another version of the game to release at the sametime.

    2. the install in dmc4 was suppose to help the game by reducing the load times. but I would loved that install to optional because it eats up 5gigs of my hardrive.

    3. I agree that games with thropies is more appealing, but if people bought this game just for thropies, because they would of waited for it, then again I could be completely wrong.

    4. didn’t he say that it’s retroactive?, but I still think it won’t because I don’t thing sony would allow it, maybe they will I have no clue.

and why do you care so much for thropies? all it’s for is bragging rights ” Wow I got more thropies than you, I’m a better gamer than you, blah, blah, blah. don’t get me wrong I like getting thropies and it adds replay value to games. But not deleting a game just because of thropies.

well it’s your opinions and can do, say, or think whatever you want

  • wow I got poor grammer :P

  • Not out in Norway

Sorry to burst your bubble, but BCR is not out in all of Europe. The game is not out in Norway or Germany (afaik), so either someone voted Norway and Germany out of Europe or someone at Capcom, Grim og SCEE dropped the ball on this one.

Being a PS3-owner I have gotten used to getting the short end of the stick living in Europe and all, but now certain countries gets singled out? To qoute David Reeves:

“When the US launch, we could launch in Australia and we could launch in New Zealand and the UK, but if we did that then our colleagues in Italy and France and Germany and Spain would not be very happy, so we’ve chosen to stick to the strategy of doing it pan-European and pan-Australia and New Zealand,”

So what happened, guyes? I take it this wasn’t planned? Did some of your summer-interns steal the code for the Norwegian-version and pawned it at some basaar in Chairo? Must be it.

I really wanted this game, as I had the weekend off and were looking for some retro-action, but no…

  • Here is a question that i can’t find the answer to.
How do i instal and activate Bionic Commando on 5 active ps3’s?
when i got the demo for BCR at said one low price to instal on 5 active ps3’s.
but since i bought the game i dont know how to do it.

  • Could you guys sell me the Mission modes in BCR separately…coz i played the demo…and was not interested in the singleplayer….BUT DAMN the mission modes are addictive!

  • Okay John, perhaps my wording is a little bit harsh or perhaps even verging on hyperbole, and I do apologize for that, but can the BCR dev team not take any criticism?

I’ll put this into perspective: a game like Uncharted did not have trophies in mind when it was first developed, but the idea of a medals based reward system was. According to Evan Wells at Naughty Dog, the implementation of trophies was quite easy because the game already had a medals based reward system in place, hence a 1:1 correlation between when a user acquires a medal, triggering a trophy.

BCR also has a medals system, except you’ve done it one better: the medals are universal across the whole game, and all save files (as far as I can tell right now anyway). Both of you have had an equal amount of time to implement and learn trophies. So by comparison, the BCR dev team are – I shall not say inefficient – ‘less’ efficient than other more skilled developers. Would that not be a fair assertion?

As for resources, can you give us an example or outline just how significant these resources are, which are required to implement trophies? You obviously have to pour these resources into delivering Achievements, so it would be hypocritical to say that such a thing is not “worthy” of resources on Ps3. Thats playing favourites, and only hints at a lessening respect Capcom would have for Playstation users.

You’re planning on delivering trophies, meaning you’ve at least acquired the resources…so at this point, I think a better explanation than “it is hard to find resources” is a fair request on our end, as people who purchased the game.

On a side (happier) note: anyone who remembers the original BC is in for a treat when they reach the Albatross as the entire ship has been made into an extended, super challenging platforming segment, leading up to the final boss, which has also been somewhat revamped. A spot on job with re-imagining the final stage.

    • Here are the assumptions you are making that lead you to believe that the BC team is less efficient than other more \”skilled\” developers:

      1) AAA disc based title budget and resources = AAA digital title budget and resources.

      2) FIRST party devloper A and THIRD party developer B received guidelines and requirements for trophy support at the same time and had same amount of time/resources to implement said feature.

      3) 3rd party company plays the console favorite game by implementing a required feature on one system versus not releasing at launch, a very new, non-required feature for competing console.

And to be \”fair\”, I think I previosly gave a more detailed explanation than “it is hard to find resources\” and also directed that explanation more towards games releasing in the near future than specifically BCR.

I\’m also all about personal attention (ala Jerry McGuire) but I think I\’ve spent way too long on my responses to you and this topic. We\’re beating a rotten corpse of a horse here and this is my last response on this subject. Please enjoy the game. It\’s definitely a labor of love to the fans of the series and genre…and remember…provided to you for only $10.

      Peace.

  • Juggalonutz,

in order to download games onto other PS3 systems you have to add yourself (gamertag, login information, password, etc.) to that PS3, sign into that account and you can then access your “download list” from the PSN store.

Once you download your game onto that PSN system any user on that system can play it HOWEVER you MUST leave your account info on that system which provides the “license” for your purchased games (you can disable auto-log in and auto-completion of password if you don’t want your friends buying stuff on your account or logging in and pretending to be you) or else all games downloaded and associated with you will not be playable.

  • I don´t get why so much complain about the Trophies issue. Mr. Diamonon assures us about a future Trophy patch( retroactive hopefully ),so its not a big deal. I´m just Hoping ( listen the voice of consumers John ) that patch be free and don´t get priced or come with a some add-on forcing users buying new stuff to get them. This is not right.

And this time lets be fair with Capcom: Bionic Commando Rearmed PS3 version its visually slight(but is)better than X360( also is good to mention the crap XBOX digital control ). So I dont see a inferior version here as occurred with Lost Planet for example.

    • That\’s why this forum is a great vehicle to gauge user interest. Thanks for always being active on here J. Your concerns don\’t fall on deaf ears.

    • When people complain about the trophy support, why don\’t they acknowledge the fact that we implemented Remote Play? How many downloadable titles, or PS3 titles in general, even support this? Just goes to show that no matter what you do, there\’s no pleasin\’ errone.

  • @John

I respect your position on the matter, and obviously we are at odds so I also will respect your decision to leave the issue alone.

Though, it should serve as a reminder to how important trophies are. New or not, they are an important (and desired) feature of new games. Many people have said they will not purchase the game until it has trophies. I think that speaks to their importance.

Trophies are an important part of new Ps3 games, and beyond BCR should not be so easily overlooked or “patched later at some unknown point in the future”. Is that a fair conclusion to make from all of what has transpired?

(I appreciate you don’t want to respond to me anymore, but a simple one sentence reply would suffice if you’re still reading this thread of comments)

  • I didn’t remembered that spike in BC was a pain in the ass that much!!! ;)

I notice that buying BC:R will give you some Bonus in the upcoming BC title (in 3D), is the bonus is only the classic BC outfit (wich I like better than the dreads thing that the SPancer will have… probablly something related to some nostalgia of an 80’s BC veteran ;) ) or is there something else???

BTW, I would have paid twice the price for this game!!!!

It’s appreciated that even after 6 pages of posting, you still give us answers.

    Thank you.

    • I think there\’s more information that hasn\’t been revealed yet regarding the interoperability between the two games. I need to verify that with Ben.

  • thank you Mr. Diamonon for being real in your comment. i like to read some emotion in a response.

Not saying i enjoy seeing anyone (madman..) getting his *** verbally handed to them when they are out of line, but all in all a “real” reply. not a hallow soulless robot reply.

nice to see we’re not talking to robots… (your not right?) lol

thanks again john!!! keep the honesty flowing. maybe it’ll catch on…

    • Thanks Dank. I think everyone deserves honest and open answers to honest and open questions. The PS Blog is a great vehicle for this 2 way interaction. I may at times react to personal attacks, misinformation or trolling, but hey, I\’m human (and definitely not a robot) :)

Anyways, I\’m more than willing to respond to any criticism or concerns that anyone has as long as they\’re constructive. It\’s all about the approach.

  • p.s. great game. brings me back to being a little kid and being the only one on my block with a video game console… poor people

    • I remember being so jealous of the guy on my street who had an Atari. But I was the first to have a ColecoVision on my block. Good times.

  • hey John filipino ka ba? or alam mo lag mag tagalog?

  • John, what’s with the PS3 version of Bionic Commando Rearmed being mono-sound, while the “other” console version has Dolby Digital?

    Any chance of a patch?

  • why don’t they acknowledge the fact that we implemented Remote Play? How many downloadable titles, or PS3 titles in general, even support this?

The demo worked pretty good with remote play. I’ll be buying this as soon as i pay off the pre orders for Resistance 2, LBP, and Socom.

  • About the remote play function: i dont use very often, this feature in some games dont work well( PixelJunk Eden and Lair for example ) so, its always better play in my PS3 with a dualshock 3.

But why not a “real” PSP version of BCR? Would be great! Suits nice in my opinion.

  • how do you install BCR on 5 ps3 systems while only paying the one price?

  • Hello, i’m from Spain. Any word on this game avalaible in europe? Who’s fault is it that we always get everything soooooooo late?

    Some questions:
when will SF2 HD be available?
Will it feature global online play (some PS3 games only feature continental play) ?
Will it be shareable (just like BCR, i own 3 ps3) ?
Will it come to Europe later than US?

    How much will it be!?

  • Hey John,

As far as the in-game soundtrack patch goes, I’m not really in favor of it.

    Would it be cool? Yes.
    Would I use it? Maybe.
Would I pay for it? No.

The music is good enough on it’s own where I probably wouldn’t bother switching it out for something else. I mean, I loved the NES music, and the new stuff follows in the same spirit.

I definitely think the $10.00 was a bargain (especially after looking at my 120 Rock Band songs), but I’m not sure I would pay extra for trophy support or an in-game soundtrack. Don’t get me wrong, I love trophies. But I’m not willing to pay for them.

Paying for extra levels (not just challenge rooms) or gameplay modes though… I would pay money for that!

And good work on Rearmed! I can’t tell you how psyched I am that you remade the original I loved so much, and did such a great job on it!

    Thanks,
    -Jaime

    • Thanks for your input JB. I totally agree with you regarding the music. The music in this game rocks and I don\’t think an in-game music patch is needed. Having more challenge rooms is a good idea.

  • Hey John D!

I just wanted to remind you that there are a lot of fans of In-Game Music that are hoping for a future patch(Ben Judd please).

I know the game already has great music but having my own music to listen to pump myself up for the challenge rooms would be GREAT! It would be OPTIONAL so it wouldn’t hurt.

At least promise me that future games Capcom are working on are going to try to include it since Sony has given you the capabilities to do it. What do you say?

  • Makes me want to play the original Contra.

What audio output are you using to your receiver, optical or HDMI?”

    Using optical John.

  • Here is a question that i can’t find the answer to.
How do i instal and activate Bionic Commando on 5 active ps3’s?
when i got the demo for BCR at said one low price to instal on 5 active ps3’s.

  • WHY THE HELL ISNT STREETFIGHTER ALPHA IN THE UK STORE!!!!!!!
    CMON SONY I MEAN CMON…!!!!!!!!

  • John,
Is SFAlpha strictly a single-player affair?

Also, Bionic Commando is most excellent. I have to tell you that when I first played Bionic Commando (the original) I hated it with a passion: No jump button? What were they thinking!!?? But since then I’ve grown and matured (maybe) and realize a great game when I play one.

One last question: I hear that Capcom has an “Ace up their sleeve” regarding BC. Is it a real, working grapple arm? I sure hope so!

    • Chria, SFA is a direct port of the PSN version. So no online play, but you can play 2P locally.

Ben will announce this \”Ace\” at Leipzig.

  • I must say that I am really enjoying Rearmed! : ) I got to the the “very last” stage, and…lets just say around the boss stage (although I think this is a multiple staged fight) I just get killed so fast to even have a clue on what I need to do. But I really like Rearmed. I give this game a B+! Anyone who has’nt at least tried the demo should definitly do so!

I have a question about Mega Man 9. Will this game support trophies. I saw the achievement list for this game, and I would LOVE to be able to show those things off to my friends. They are truly hardcore! Again, hats off to the BC Rearmed team on a fantastic remake!

  • hey thnaks for responding to my question but it really wasn’t answerd. when i got the demo for BCR at said one low price to instal on 5 active ps3’s.
but since i bought the game i dont know how to do it.
if anyone still has the demo please check this out for me.

  • Any update John on an ETA for patch?

  • @ 281

    go to another ps3

    login

go to the store and download bcr
( in your download list )

  • just bought bionic ;)

  • I just Got Bionic too! Awesome game :] John d! Ive been reading alot of snippets of a possible Ps3 hint to the Awesome game Dead Rising! =) Gahh!!! Pleasee please You guys have to consider porting it over to ps3. capcom is known for not choosing favourites when it comes to its game dead rising., And when I first heard about the game myself I thought it would be coming out for ps3 Atleast (due to the fact I was a huge resident evil fan and I knew capcom had put alot of work into that entire series)

As you guys probably can tell MANY many people do WANt this game to come to ps3 and theres no doubt people would buy it right away. Theres even an online petition right now with close to 4000 signatures already Heres the link :
    http://www.petitiononline.com/PS3DR/petition.html

I gaurantee you it will be worth your interest to port it. Not only would you be making many die hard fans happy. But your going to show everyone that Capcom is and always will be a multi platform publisher :)

anyways GREAT JOB ON BIONIC COMMANDO ! =)

  • Looks like the whole “this game will support trophies with a patch” was a lie.

No trophy support yet, and its been weeks since release. This is verging on a practical joke on PSN users…good job, BCR Team!

  • Madman, patience is a virtue. Good things come to those who wait. Things take time, what patch has come out in less than a month of initial announcement? None that I know of.

  • You’r right, not many. But that said, other developers have had the foresight to at least pick a date for releasing the patches. Uncharted, PAIN, Warhawk…they all gave release dates for their patches FAR in advance.

    There are scenarios here:
    1) The trophies aren’t coming, John and his cronies at GRIN lied to us and baited us into buying this game with a false announcement.

    2) GRIN does not possess the intellectual and practical adequacies to actually get trophies running (they are easy, as per EVERY developer that has released thus far) and thus they cannot deliver a date.

I guess there is a third scenario: they just don’t give a **** about PSN users and thus don’t think an announcement about the time of arrival is necessary…to which I will give them the benefit of the doubt and say that they probably know better than to tease someone FAR in advance.

Barring that, both possible scenarios spell bad news for trophies and GRIN as a developer. Should these trophies not show up soon, I doubt I will commit a purchase of BC for the consoles, just to protest the mediochrity of game development that has been ravaging the industry as of late.

  • yupe very disappointed about this too, Capcom has been pretty disappointing on PS3 side this gen. ND can actually promise a date for the patch and it actually got released earlier than expected. Capcom has just pretty much disappeared from the scene and dont even talk about it, no update, no reply, nothing. Unless 90% of the ppl that bought them are PC and 360 users, I can see why the lousy support we are getting…. still, a promise is a promise.
