Life with PlayStation is on its way

215 0

I’ve got some good news and some okay news. We’ll start with the okay part. We’re still pushing some paperwork on Life with PlayStation — so hold tight just a bit longer. Now on to the good news, the Life with PlayStation application is looking great and to quench some of the curiosity around what it’s all about, here’s what I can share today.

We’re going to offer this as a free service that will be easily accessible directly from the XMB. Life with PlayStation will feed live content to your PS3 with updates on news and weather on a visually stunning and interactive global map. Imagine being able to wake up to your PS3 to see if you need to pack an umbrella for the day. Or just relax as you listen to your favorite tunes while reading up on top news from around the world.

We’re also very excited to share that Life with PlayStation will be combined with our Folding@home project. What does this mean? While you’re tuned into Life with PlayStation, you’ll also be helping Stanford researchers cure diseases like Alzheimer’s and various types of cancer while Folding@home is running in the background.

We know you’re eager to check it out for yourself, so we’re working hard to get it in your hands. Stay tuned.

  • Playstation Home? give us something PLEASE! love the info about LIFE WITH PLAYSTATION its about time! *Sighs*

  • yes! cant freakin wait.

  • Delaystation 3 continues to live up to its name!

  • I see Sony’s getting aggro about taking over my living room as promised.

  • Man it would be nice to have a job with no deadlines…sign me up!

  • Cool! Fantastic news!

“Life with PlayStation, you’ll also be helping Stanford researchers cure diseases like Alzheimer’s and various types of cancer while Folding@home is running in the background”.

That is simply an awesome ethical feature. :)

Please say this is coming to Canada as well, the same time as the US.

  • Please say this is coming to Canada as well, the same time as the US.

  • been there, said that.

  • thank you for the update…I was wondering if you would make the deadline you set for yourself. 2 days is cutting it close, but PLEASE DEAR GOD do not delay it to the end of Sept. or beyond. I mean with EVERYTHING getting delayed *cough* home *cough* again and again and AGAIN AND AGAIN we are getting restless. and to the guy mentioning the “console wars” they all won in their own way…but they are OVER

Sony: Best overall system and best integration with a handheld

Big white box: best online experience (until LWP and Home)

small white box: holy crap we made the most money and sold the most units…but more than half of our games are shovelware

Some of you who just accept everything Sony puts out with no complaint are even more annoying.

The people who complain want the best from a company which promised a platform which was going to be the best. However, so far they have missed some of the most obvious things that are missing from their platform. Remember, it took them nearly 2 years before they put a clock on the xmb even though the psp had one at launch. I applaud the firmware developers for finally getting painfully obvious features such as in-game xmb released. But I castigate them for not meeting the features of their competitors or their meeker platforms.

It is easier to organize data on the psp than on the ps3. This could be fixed immediately and would probably take a week to create. Just allow us to edit the album info of multiple pieces of data.

Cross game invites is simply sending and retrieving text.

Playing music in the background or having voice, not video, chat seems like it could be done with one of the coprocessors.

I believe the reason so many of these obvious and simple task have not been accomplished in the firmware is due to a lot of pre-planned junk that the firmware developers wished they could release. Now they’re probably in a debate over which of their pre-planned rubbish, which no one wanted in the first place, is to be scrapped to make room for obvious and straightforward features that will help the ps3 become truly competitive.

But, maybe it will take a dip in sales numbers for the ps3 before people who complain about complaining realize just how valuable complaining can be. I will continue to complain to do my part to help make this system the best there is of this generation.

  • Thank you sony, for making your announcements for new PS3 products and features even more unbelievable

Jack Trenton the head of SCEA lied to the press at E3 stating this “Life with PlayStation will be out by the end of this month”

When the end of July came and a blog post was made stating that Life w/ PlayStation was not going to be released to this month as previously stated I almost expected this to happen with no updates after the statement let alone a hands on preview available at E3. After it was officially announced it was not I told myself its got to come out in August that’s enough time to get the testing and bugs out it and have it ready for release but this post is telling me the opposite. DON’T MAKE STATEMENTS YOU CAN’T FOLLOW UP ON. YOUR LYING TO PEOPLE THAT BUY YOUR PRODUCTS

You’ll launch a video service the same day its revealed because its a revenue generator but not a unique, possible console selling feature such as Home or Life with PlayStation because its free.

  • I’m not whining, pointing out the real problems with these delays are

You can’t have presidents of companies lying at E3 Press Conferences

  • @ Comment 2 —>

I 100% AGREE with suggestions 2 and 3!!! I have always wished for a hd Crash game and for Naughty Dog to buy it back. Also I think a melee game with Crash, Rachet and Clank, Warhawk Man, Nathan Hale, and others would ROCK!!!!!!!!! :)

  • It would be nice to give an approximate release date instead of a vague “coming soon”. Maybe Sony should think about not announcing new services until they are truly ready instead of raising PS3 owners expectations and then continually delaying things.

  • I have major issues with this feature, in my opinion this is wasted man-hours on copying the wii’s weather/news channels, and i forsee it being a future way of delivering branding/ads right to the XMB >_>, to address just a few major issues your in-a-dark-cave developers seem to have missed.

    >> Imagine being able to wake up to your PS3 to see if you need to pack an umbrella for the day.

You can already, it’s called a window, if you look out of it and see water falling from the sky, or significantly gray clouds, it’s time to pack an umbrella..

    >>Or just relax as you listen to your favorite tunes while reading up on top news from around the world.

You can already, just hit news.bbc.co.uk in the browser..

What next, Playstation Life virtual-pick-your-nose?, pick those solids whilst enjoying music on the dashboard, or waiting for your new game to finish filling your hard drive with data it could just have easilly read off the disk… only benefit there? clean fingers, but at least virtual-pick-your-nose HAS a benefit.

  • @ 115 —>

Dude, it is called innovation, no substitution. If you don’t care to use it when it arrives, dont’t. ;)

  • love the integration with folding at home, excellent ideal, I’m excited to check this out, sooner than later hopefully

  • thatsmartguywiththefro

Ah well, hopefully this will give you guys time to add more features to firmware 2.50. :P Combining it with F@H will be great! I remember when they were showing LwPS you could choose music from your HDD, will this be added to F@H? This would be a lot more convenient then just shuffling through your music. Thanks for the effort, and I’m glad you didn’t give us a firm release date, since it would be entirely possible that you hit another delay (God forbid), just keep that in mind next time, and give more general dates like Summer and Fall.

  • YAY! Bull! I not see much promised from them. I do not appreciate it. Sony is big time SUCK.

  • @115
I somewhat agree. But let’s hope this is finished quickly so they can move on to more useful updates. I think firmware developers should put focus on cross-game invites, persistent voice chat, in-game background music, and multiple data album editing. Once these obvious and more important things are done, then developers can work on useless stuff that’s probably already available.

  • @ 116
If their idea of innovation is copying something other consoles, and virtually any pc, then the ps3’s life is doomed.

Life isn’t much that you couldn’t already do, the only two things that make it redeemed is the f@h intergration and the interactive map, the weather/news stuff.. is pointless, you can do it anyway from ANY browser if you go to the right sites, i just think there are countless more important issued that need to be addressed before they start adding new features.

When i redecorate my home, i start on one room, and move on to the next when the first is done, to start a new room before the previous one is done, makes BOTH room take longer to complete.

The same is true for the ps3’s features.

    1) how many firmware revisions until the clock doesn’t cover other information?
    2) how many months until more than a handful of games support trophies?
    3) how many years until GT5, final fantasy, etc.
    4) how long until the standard SKU’s only offer enough hdd space to own about 10 games because of mandatory installs?

And all the while we play the waiting game for sony so finish walking around with their head in the clouds, the price of the ps3 itself gradually drops, and all the early adopters.. and i don’t even mean people who went out and bought one the first month.. i mean everyone who bought one between release, and RIGHT NOW, get to watch sony focus on pulling in new owners, with new features and more attractive pricetags.

What did we pay more for?, i’ll tell you what.

We paid to wait, because that’s all most of us have been doing since unboxing our PS3’s.

  • Essentially we are doomed, because sony do not make money on each console they sell, they need to make it elsewhere, so first party games will always cost a crapload when new, services such as Home, will be crippled, you think you have free reign!, but look at all the screenshots.. and tell me just how wide the choice is.. you can get your ass that soon after Home launches, they will release a store section devoted to selling customizing items for every aspect of home.. even though brand names will be paying through the teeth to have virtual stores, you’ll still have to lay down the credit card to buy those virtual sneakers, or virtual sofas.

Home isn’t delayed because it’s not complete, it’s been ready since the first day of beta testing, everyone in the world could have been experiencing the same as the beta testers, and helped sony make Home grow.. but instead they’ve been waiting it out, dangling the big fat carrot and waiting for brand name companies to sign themselves up for PS Home, you mark my words, when home finally releases, there will be brand-names all over the place, because as someone else said in this thread.

Sony need to make their money back, so until they do, we’re all slaves to their desire to achieve it.

  • Sounds like “Life with Playstation” won’t be out until September or October to me. Then again, I’m quite used to the countless delays. Mr. Jack Tretton is a man of his words.

As for the blog post, thanks for posting something and telling us nothing.

  • At least you guys are wising up and stop giving dates lol

  • Thank you. Please read your post. its good for us to know this. We want to be a part of these things

  • Looking forward to this before SOCOM comes out.

  • @#62

Isn’t it obvious? People act like the PS3 just has all the delays in the world. My point is that delays aren’t PS3 exclusive. To illustrate my point, I listed delays on the other HD 7th gen console.

I can draw you a picture or make flash cards if you’re still lost.

  • yes all we need now is a release date for this and when the invites are going out

  • for home

  • hey how you guy’s doin im mike ive alway’s been a playstation fan,i had an xbox and i realy enjoyed it i mean you chat with friend while playin a game whether you online playin or jus playing a single player game like uncharted i mean that would be a great feature <— (i think that’s how you spell it ?)and i traded my xbox in for a ps3 couse the trophier system jus looked so much better and had more meaning the lvling up is realy cool but then yall say they can choose wheather or not to add trophies cmon man put your foot down and fight for us show me that i made the swich for a resson and how bout upgrading the browser with latest flash players i dont mean to complain i jus wanna see ps stomp xbox i mean yall let star ocean go whats up with that please tell me were geting mass effect?? how bout mgs4 trophies?? or grand theft auto 4 tropthise?? or oblivion trophies?? or cod4 trophies?? i mean dont let them say no tell them it needs to be done. i have alot of great ideas i would like to share as im sure so dose evry boger here belive me when i say i love playstation i do but do you love us ??? thats the question thats the real question

  • don’t lie to us again
put on the playstation 3 lot us is getting tired of delays

  • OFFICIAL STATEMAENTS??? sigh* yeah EVEN OFFICIAL STATEMENTS GET DELAYED!!! nothing can be trusted when even Jack Tretton sais it with its own words! so dont listen to devs when they say home will be released this year!

  • is it free?

  • @Noam, SCE et al,

THANK YOU! I look forward to all the ongoing enhancements you guys spend a lot of time and money putting together to make PS3, PSP and PSN the best there is!

    @Everyone whining about delays…

Get a clue people… Life with Playstation is clearly not just some 100% internally developed content… International news and weather is not free for reproduction and republishing…

Sony is subject to licenses for this stuff… If you have EVER worked with licensing, you would know how time consuming and totally unpredictable things can be.

    I have, and I know.

As for Home, seriously, pay attention to the news out there, folks! Get guy heading up the Home dev team in the Netherlands said at GC a week ago that he is 100% positive that Home will be done by the holidays! Considering how ambitious Home is, that is actually quite an impressive undertaking… to be complete and deployed to the public in only about two years dev time.

Be thankful that Sony is not going to charge for it! It’s free! Sony is awesome to be offering to many extras with PS3. PSP and PSN totally free of charge!

So, say think you, already and go play your games!

  • Honestly guys…don’t bother yourselves…it’s only a cool looking globe with news attached to it…

I wish you people wouldn’t get upset…cuz Sony does not have a single bit of emotion exhausted concerning your frustrations…

    It’s a money making machine…

I can’t get enough of Uncharted!!!!

    MGS4…Killzone 2 on the way…

    Games…it’s all about games…!!!

  • @135
I’m thankful Sony isn’t charging for services except Qore, which is utter crap.

I would be even more thankful if they could scrap pointless stuff like LWP and home until they fix even more obvious stuff such as multiple data album editing and other blatantly obvious things that their competitors already have.

  • i think its a disgrace that they have delayed this thing just because of some paperwork!
it has taken them two months and counting to resolve this issue, i think this speaks of malice and just sheer incompetence of them!

i’m pretty disgusted at sony and their lying ways, first was this then it was the nippon ichi interview that never happened…remember rpg fans? yup delaystation or lyingstation 3 strikes again!

  • btw,why put this program along with folding@home? will there be anyway to launch life without having to launch the folding? because if not then that would suck big time because i dont want my ps3 to be used as an elitist cause…(no,i dont think that folding like crazy helps to find cure agaisnt cancer, thats just another scam by sony and standford to either lie when paying taxes or in standfor’s case to get more govt grants)

  • also i just dont have the money to pay for the electric bill to do the folding crap.but, if sony and standfor are SOO giving then pay my electric bill and i will be more than happy to “help humanity”

  • Its ok for me,its not a game, only a service, people whine so much.

  • I don’t know why anyone is complaining about a delay, it’s going to be a free app.

  • Just had a separate thought on Folding: can we get Trophies for Folding@Home? I think it would encourage people to use Folding@Home if there were certain goals such as: Fold 100 units, Fold 200 units, etc.

  • good news/ okay news….are you serious?? LAME. what type of answers are these??…if sony were a company that actually cared about its consumers/products they could at least nail down a date. this type of answer from a so-called senior development manager is unexceptable. Is it that hard to just give consumers a straight answer?

  • and as for the people who say people complain too much or “whine” its called saying when enough its enough, and not just rolling over, its called asking for a mulitmillion or even billion company that we support to do what we and everyone else expects them to do, but if you wanna call us complainers whiners do so, but take a look at what youre really putting up with

  • another thought… when i drink…i ramble…but at least im honest

  • the wait will be well worth it!

    anything new = win

  • I’m really glad so see you guys told us about it!
    I can’t wait for it.

Of course people will still find things to get pissed about, especially the fake people on here who CLAIM to be PS3 fans.

YOU KNOW YOU YOU ARE AND YOU MUST DIE!

Anyway, hopefully this will come out either this month or next week.

  • very nice! I love free. Its great to hear you guys are working really hard on this and im personally glad you’re taking your time with it. its cool that you are incorporating it with folding. that can’t hurt.

    peace,
    Lh

  • I know yall are probably tired of hearing this but any news on HOME yet. I’ve really been wanting that.

  • So many promises….. only time can tell if the Playstation 3 is a lie or only a imagination.
