If you’ve ever wished you could find everything you need to start your day on your PLAYSTATION 3, Life with PlayStation give you one more reason to do so. This free service delivers a new way for you to utilize your PS3 to instantly access real-time news and information like weather updates from over 60 cities around the world.

Life with PlayStation provides a stunning interactive globe, a 3D world map that you can twirl around to see live cloud movement courtesy of the University of Wisconsin, combined with up-to-date weather information from the Weather Channel, top news headlines provided by Google news, and live web cam images via the Earth Television Network — all localized to the select city. And why not have your favorite soundtrack playing in the background while you go through your morning ritual (just think, no TV commercials and teasers to find out if you need to bring an umbrella to work)? You’re on your own for your morning caffeine fix.

For those following the progress of Hurricane Ike throughout last week, we were able to track the storm’s real-time movement from Life with PlayStation. (See the screenshots below)

We’re also really excited to share that this new lifestyle service is running in parallel with our Folding@home project. Essentially, this means that while you’re taking a stroll on Life with PlayStation, you’re automatically helping Stanford University to work towards curing diseases such as Alzheimer’s and various types of cancers. For those familiar with Folding@home, we’ve made some enhancements for more advanced simulations of protein folding and support for wider variety of simulations, in addition to adding a unique ranking system showcasing top contributors from around the world.

I’ve also put together a quick video demo to make sure you’re checking out all the new features here:

Life with PlayStation is now available for download by selecting the Folding@home icon under “Network” on the XMB. Give it a whirl, we look forward to reading your feedback.

  • Awesome! Can’t wait to try it out.

  • Thanks for the update.

  • Wow, wow & wow! Thank You very much, it’s a great feature!

  • Now that LwP and the PSN Cards are out, I wonder what all the commenters are going to start complaining about. Flash Player update seems to be the most likely candidate. ;D

Regardless, nice job Sony! Took a little longer than you had originally estimated, but I’d much rather have a solid end product than something rushed out the door.

  • Do we get this just by launching the Folding@home, and it should update? Maybe it will not be online for a while, because i’m launching folding@home, and nothing new :(

  • Couple of questions for the developers:

    1. can you add a zoom feature to the browser?

    2. Remote play is a nice feature, but the text is too small to read when trying to browse, so can you add a PSP zoom feature as well?

    Thanks again

  • He he I’m first, that’s something you don’t see much often :-D I’m downloading the update right now :-)

  • What??? Spoilers :-P

  • How do you update it? I’m selecting folding@homa and nothing happens.

  • @ParadoxSeven when you start up Folding@Home it will automatically ask you to update. With me it asked me twice to update, a general update and the 1.00 update. Maybe its not available yet on your PS3 due to timezone (middle of the night in the US / CA).

  • Wow, and I thought I only had the bike pack for “Burnout Paradise” to look forward to today!

  • @Onna76_NL — its 1:12 AM Central, if you have it in CA, i should have it here in Texas by now :)

  • Wow, this is pretty cool.

  • woohoo, there it is, I had to LOG out of your ID, and log back in for it to show a update, I’ve been playing Bionic Commando Challenges all night, and just quit, and saw this posting, so went straight to check folding@home, seems that you have to log out and back into the ps3 for it to do a fresh check? none the less, i’m downloading now! :)

  • Good stuff guys thank you so much for keep adding awesome things to our much loved ps3s..

I chose ps3 for the variety and you guys have definitely not disappoint..

    Thanks again.

  • @ParadoxSeen, I’m from The Netherlands, but I’m glad the US / CA can download it as well :-) SHOOT! Burnout patch of course… nearly forgot about that! :-D

  • ftwrthtx: PS3 browser has had zoom since day one. Just click R3 to zoom and L2/R2 to change zoom level. Same trick works with Remote Play as well.

  • Great new i get it when i finish mi SOCOM game :p

  • I’ve had it since yesterday thanks to having it up for a short period of time late last night. :P Thanks guys! :)

  • I had to login on my UK account to get the update.

  • Nice work. Only two suggestions …

    1) Ability to setup local news feeds
    2) Ability to setup local weather

Otherwise, thanks for the cool application.

  • Erm… my PSN account is logged in as the Netherlands how come I wind up in San Francisco when I open Life With Playstation? :-?

  • Thanks!!! :) I love Sony (LOOOOONG TIME READER, First comment ever!!!)

  • And…getting the American news :-?

  • I would really start using this instead of checking my local news channel if you had LIVE traffic reports video feeds showing the current conditions of highways, streets, etc. Something similar to that would be nice. Thanks for reading! :D

  • It looks great. Have it up and running.

Anything you can tell us about possible adding more cities later on?

  • Will more cities be added? If not news, atleast weather. Ability to set city to go to when opening, it appears to not even get close. But other then that, its awesome. So Great work, love every little thing thats released.

  • Definitely needs a 15 day weather section and please please i would love to have a traffic section… it would be great.. like google maps does it… main highways green or yellow or red accordingly to how traffic is.

and of course all major cities.. thanks again guys.. great start thou…

just encourage you to keep working on it thou, there’ so potential on this program.. please don’t abandon it half way.. like with the in game-xmb where everything works half way..

  • @TT-2k — although the ps3 browser has zoom function with R3, it doesn’t appear the browser in life has this ability, rather odd, but its needed.

  • Thank you.

  • Finally!!! Downloading Now. Thanks!!!

  • Awesome!!!!!!!!! Finally!!!!!!

Word of Advice though. Don’t ever make promises like you did at E3 saying “it will be here at the end of the month” and then have it come out 2 months later.

Give yourself some wiggle room. Like “its coming soon” or something.

Unless is like what they did with the video service where they said “and its available now” then don’t give such specific dates

  • Can we change the temperatures to Celsius?

  • @joeymp — I rather have rough estimates, then “coming soon” oh how many times has coming soon turned into years!

  • Its awesome Sony…and would love some additions to it like Local weather etc…

Great job.and thanks for the release.

  • The browser needs a zoom option but apart from that a good start from version one.

  • @Mindplague — Yes you can, press Triangle to bring up your options, and go up one to current channel, and change the temp. i believe thats where the option was.

  • @ParadoxSeven-I would too, but if their not going to deliver then they shouldn’t say things like that. Look how many people got pissed off.

  • @Tondog
You’ll have to wait just one more day to find out. As for flash, I kind of understand why that would never be updated. They don’t want you to play free flash games when they could be monetized on the psn, i.e. “Flow”.

  • Just to let everyone know that after updating to Life with playstation you will not be able to Fold@Home via remote play anymore!

It was a nice feature to F@H remotely instead of sitting in front of your PS3.

    Bad move Sony!

I hope you can rectify this maybe with a future update.

Thanks for all the fantastic free features your bringing to the PS3 : )

  • Good job Sony! Keep these great features coming!

  • When will we be able to play our own playlists in folding@home/playstation life? I would use folding@home much more if I could choose my own playlist.

  • Another great, free service brought to you by Sony. PlayStation 3 FTW! Thank you Sony!

  • Looks like even the Wii kicks your butt on this one. Seriously – this is pretty sparse.

  • It’s finally here :) Thanks for the free service, I hate the local news here so this is nice.

  • Lol What is the point of the weather forecast if we can’t set it to your hometown?

  • Also in the UK it doesn’t focus on London despite my setting being for GMT and having the correct time like it is stated.

  • @48 I meant “our”, not “your”.
