Hey all – I’m back again, and I hope you’ve had a chance to read my recent post on Linger in Shadows from last Saturday. Linger releases today on PSN for $2.99, so I wanted to answer some questions that popped up, as well as give a little insight as to how you go about exploring and interacting with Linger.

First things first … I know I haven’t gotten back to folks on the comments, but I have been busy working on finishing the PSP download version of Everyday Shooter, but I promise I’ll chime in and respond to some of the questions and comments here.

When you actually play through Linger in Shadows there are a bunch of things to think about as you explore. Roam through the timeline both forward and backward. Look beyond the frame of the picture as you see it. There are things hidden that you can play with, unlock, and even get Trophies for if you find them. You’ll want to utilize all aspects of the SIXAXIS or the DualShock3.

Right now you may be thinking, “What in the world is he talking about?” But once you jump into the experience, you’ll start to realize what I’m talking about. I don’t want to explain it too much and give it away.

Also, there are even hints both through audio cues, visual effects, and the DualShock3 if you have that controller as well. If you miss something critical, it winds back, and you are given a hint, too. We added these hints because we want you to enjoy it and not get too frustrated.

Ok, onto Trophies. The reason for including Trophies is that we wanted to reward the player for exploring. The more exploration beyond the basics, the more you get. A lot of these are reflected through “greets.” For those of you who don’t know what greets are, they come from the demoscene. Demo groups put in call outs, or greets, to friends or other groups whose work they really respect. It is kind of like liner notes on a record album. It’s a tradition of the art form that I think is cool, and it exposes you to other demoscene groups that you should check out.

Another thing to think about is that Trophies don’t have to be the traditional “You Killed XXX enemies” or “Beat time of blah” sort of thing. They can be explored as part of ideas, philosophy, mocking the traditional idea of Trophies, or for very unique approaches to playing the game, art, or whatever. I think we’ll start to see Trophies awarded for a lot of different things moving forward as people think about them as being more than just a bullet point.

I hope I answered some of your questions. I probably created more questions than I answered, but then again, I hope I can address some of those in the comments. I think that once you get your hands on Linger in Shadows and explore the experience today, it will start to make a lot more sense.

  • Just wanted to say that I’m very excited about this art/game. I remember seeing the original trailer and becoming instantly intrigued. It looks amazing and as soon as I see it on the PSN store, I’m downloading it. If I don’t like it, at least I’m helping you guys get going with doing something different! Good luck to your team with your future endeavors.

  • I guess another late update :(
Really going crazy to play LIS…

  • wheres the update??? and why did you guys like tekken 6 get away??!!!!???!!! I didnt know that tgs was for giving us all bad news

  • In the European psn there was no demo, only the full version!

  • Great job on answering all these questions! I think comment #108(Jason Greeson) and its reply by rlowe are the first developer-developer comments in the blog’s history! If not, then it’s at least the first time I’ve seen it. :D

    • Ouch!! Just because I have a management like title I\’m not a dev. :o

Just giving you a hard time. :) Believe it or not I\’m old school. I\’ve done code, art, sound, and design before I became a producer.

      Cheers

      Rusty

    • Hey X1rtam, That\’s what we do here at Santa Monica – blaze trails ;)

In all honesty though, I\’d love to claim I\’m one of the devs for this but in actuality I\’m Rusty\’s Associate Producer here at Santa Monica Studio. I just get the pleasure of working with awesome teams like Plastic and many others.

  • Congratulations Plastic and Sony for bringing something so daring and original to the PSN. This is fantastic and something you can’t get anywhere else.

I’m buying it today. Even if I end up not liking it, I support the idea and want to encourage Sony and devs to take little risks like this now and then.

  • Tekken not coming to PS3?

  • no but its not exclusive anymore

  • @156 Trust me, you will like it! It’s very original and well done!

  • I will be giving this a go tonight. Looks amazing!

  • The ps3 games always lose quality when they go multi platform! Just imagine how great Grand Thef Auto could be if they used the full potential of blu ray. WE WANT MORE EXCLUSIVES!!

  • @159: I was in the C64 and Amiga demoscene so I kinda know what to expect. I am really looking forward to it!

  • i just read a preview sayin that its still gonna be ps3 but just released on a ps3-system based arcade first

but idk i’ll believe it when i see it but untill then whats goin on with this update

  • Are you the guys that made that one demo with the bricks going through a city and the bricks somehow re-built the railway and the bricks ended up on the roof? I don’t know why, but I remember that one for some reason. Won an award or something.

Anyways, for people looking for an expansion pack for this, think of it like this:

Remember how George Lucas went back into the original Star Wars and added all of these extra scenes and CGI? Remember how that version took down the original movie about a dozen pegs compared to the original?

THAT’S why you won’t likely see any additional content: more doesn’t mean better in all cases.

  • I will be buying it tonight. And for once I can say I’m not getting it because of trophies. :)

    Great job guys.

  • This update it’s taking to long! Maybe there are some surprises up ahead!

  • Just want to say Ive been looking forward to trying this out ever since I heard about it. Very cool! Cant wait to get it.

  • Most of the trophies that i won was just by exploring, only 5 of them are left. Some of the throphies are “Greetings To” development teams like Fairwizard.

  • Sorry, it’s not Fairwizard it’s Fairlight.

  • UPDATE DONE, EVERYBODY TO THE PSN :)

  • It looks amazing, and at this price it’s a steal. I am very interested and will buy it later.

  • I’m still confused. Is it like a movie but you can use the controller to move the camera a bit? What else can you do?

  • Sweet Price , I got this queued up in my DL list :)

  • Very creative and very well executed. Had to get it 100% complete as soon as possible.
Good job on taking the demo scene one to another level. It was a great buy and I expect to see some more similar projects in the future. Maybe a more serious project with a matching price.

It is not a game but for the price it is awesome. Good luck!

  • I’ve always been attracted to games, err, projects that have a unique atmosphere. Definitely caught my eye when I saw the video a few months ago. Going to run down to my PS3 and download it now. Really glad to hear that there is more “artsy” stuff in the works. It doesn’t have to be a bloody FPS to be really cool.

  • It can work both ways. You can watch it as movie or you can move the camera and interact as well. It as some cool goodies and it’s very well done!

  • Hi Rusty, I will be picking this up as I love the whole asthetics of it all. I hope the developers are getting a slice of that $2.99 pie.

Can I suggest that Sony release their PhyreEngine to the public and open up indie development on the PS3 so that quite a few people can create demos and mini-games for PSN. If they release it with a licence that only allows publishing through PSN and youtube videos will get loads of people jumping in. I think Sony would be surprised with what indie developers will come up with, given a starting point like the PhyreEngine.

More software, sells more hardware! Always has, always will!

  • Already got it from the Euro Store. Can’t wait to try it.

  • Decent update. I can’t wait to watch Qore. It has paid for itself already with all the betas and information. I am glad I purchased that instead of a magazine subscription this year.

I’ll pass on the premium themes but I’m glad they are there. Sure I can make my own but I’d rather get a professional one for free if it is within my tastes.

  • just tried linger in shadows, i didnt try it enough to fully understand it but Wow, give me a full game that weird and im buying it day 1!!

  • My god that was awesome,
I’m in the LBP beta, and that was FAR more fun than LBP will ever be!

    Thanks plastic, and Rusty.

An hour and a half of pure enjoyment, exploration and wonder, I have all the trophies.. now to look at some of the other demos from the demosceners you’s mentioned..

    Thanks!!

  • This demoscene is one of the best ive ever seen….its not like just go out and kill this or do this, its more like watch and observe this, then use the powers you have discovered to venture further into the demoscene…..it puts you in a god like position, i love it

  • @rbuchert (Huh? I thought it said rlowe earlier), haha I see. Maybe the management usernames should have their official job titles after their screen name or something. That’d be handy so screw ups like mine never happen again! :D

  • ok i just finished it, what an amazing art piece, the music with the sounds is awesome too
    Good job!
Is ‘Into the pink’ your next project for PSN?

  • This is rather very disapointing…

Paying for an art demos, I am sorry, but this goes against the philosohpy of the the whole DEMO SCENE!

Ive been collecting and even making demo myself, since the C=64 days, then on to the Amiga golden age of demos, and then finally on the PC.

DEMOS have been freely available from the dawn of time, and now easily avalaible from the internet for popular site such as Pouet (one of my favorite) and Scene.

Why charge for those arts? Most people from the demo scene have always been develop those multimedia arts presentation to impress their pairs of what can be done in either low memory footprint (4k, 64k demos) or the impossible that can be done with graphic chips, cpu, etc…

The only time we can say money was involve is when DEMOS were presented at big venue such as Assembly, The Gathering were they were competition were the top demos were getting prizes.

I really think this should have been release as FREE!

    Intruder/Wanted/Optic Vision

  • its cool and crazy i like. i got 7 trophies aready i want more give me more this art game

  • from all the positiveness I’m reading here I will be picking this up as soon as the g/f is done with her movie. Blast her!!!

    peace,
    Lh

  • Just finished my first round through, pretty awesome I must say Rusty. Already looking forward to any future pieces you’re working on.

  • I WANT THE SOUNDTRACK FOR THIS :D :D :D

  • Wow im impressed $2.99 for this with Trophy support what a DEAL!!! looking forward on purchasing this!!!!

  • Wow, just finished the first time and I am very impressed!! Well worth the $2.99

  • Can’t wait to buy it looks amazing! I like this kind of stuff!

  • I’m not sure how to explain it but this is amazing and highly worth the money!

  • Well I just finished it I got 100% trophy wise, and I have to say it was quite an experience. Once you figure out what to do it really just flows. Great Job, I loved it.

I have to ask are you guys cat lovers? I don’t want to say why without spoiling it for some.

  • i just had a few minutes with it. put it down for a second. mainly to not rush through anything.

and decided to check the blog.

i dont know what to say. for a $2.99 download thats a tech demo i’m really impressed.. and quite frankly freaked out. LOL

the art style grabs my attention. whoever worked on the music did an impressive job. the visuals and music blend really well.

i’m seeing things used with the replay and fastforward/rewind the sixaxis controller movements, looking around with the sixaxis.

i’ve never felt that much involved with my sixaxis controller since shooting kai’s arrows in heavenly sword.

what are the plans? building on this tech demo into a larger universe?

    something completely new?

i remember reading an article or seeing a video that interviewed the crew that worked on this.

does sony have plans to hire them? if so please adopt them into the family. so many games are missing an edge and this team could be used to inject a different element into other games. they would be great for a LOST game. (no i dont count via domus as a game)

    so many questions..

honestly i might leave Linger in Shadows running as a screen saver from time to time. i’m that into it.

i dont even know why LOL.

    • Thanks LordRoah

Linger runs on my PS3 at work a lot when I don\’t have it doing something else. :) Half the time, I just leave it sitting on the menu once the text has faded out.

One of the ways we described Linger early on was to call it a digital coffee table piece. It\’s great to leave on when you have guests coming over cause they immediately want to see it!

I have to admit, this is one of the first games I\’ve worked on where there have been real puzzle elements to it and I can sympathize with anyone that has made a game with puzzle mini-games. George Weising, our designer, worked very closely with Plastic to make it engaging and challenging without making it absurdly difficult and obscure that most people will never get it.

I think the result was pretty good, but then again I\’m a little biased. :)

    • Sorry I meant to say Lord Raoh! Posting at 1 AM leads to such things…

  • i unlock all trophies and unlock the hidon part next one is in to the pink cant wait thank u and ur crew

  • It’s friggen wierd yet cool at the same time! If not for anythiung I think LiS is worth the money just so that you can experience this Interactive Art.

Thanks guys. I’m looking forward to more original stuff like this.

  • Well, it was shorter than I thought it would be. Was it worth $3? *shrugs* I dunno. But as others have said, I do not regret paying $3 to support something different for a change.

  • I’ve just played through it for over an hour and I was very pleasantly surprised. It’s original and rather dark. Poor doggy…I’ve already got 75% of the trophies and can’t wait to get the remainder. Hope we get more of these and soon. Everyone should give it a try, especially for the low price of $3.

  • Cool, kind of reminds me of .theprodukkt’s .debris demo.
