Resistance: Retribution & Resistance 2 Interoperability and Then Some

132 0

Hi everyone, my name is John Garvin, co-director of SCEA’s Bend Studio, and I wanted to give everyone a quick update on Resistance: Retribution. Chris Reese (my co-director at the studio) and I are in Tokyo this week presenting Resistance: Retribution at TGS. After our game was revealed at E3 in July, we got a lot of questions about connectivity between Resistance: Retribution and Resistance 2 on the PS3. We’re pretty excited to announce that yes, we will be providing additional game play and features if you connect R:R to R2! Here’s how it works.

connect1

Connect R:R to R2 using a USB cable. Go into the R2 options screen, and select “Infect your PSP!” That’s all it takes.

Infected mode lasts until you power down your PSP. So, what is “Infected mode”?

connect2

Infected mode provides an alternate story within our alternate history. While in prison for desertion, Grayson is recruited by Specter Lieutenant David LaSalle (from the R2 storyline) and is infected with a mutated version of the Chimeran virus … a different version of the virus that infects Nathan Hale.

While playing in “infected” mode, Grayson wears a Specter uniform and has glowing Chimeran eyes. He gets to use one of the new weapons from R2: the HE .44 Magnum, which fires explosive rounds that can be triggered remotely. He has regenerative health and no longer needs to look for health packs. He can breathe underwater, allowing him to reach hidden areas that he could not reach before. And we’ve added another whole class of Intel that are hidden throughout the levels. Collecting all of the “infected” intel will unlock another R2 weapon, the Plasma Grenades.

Another cool feature we’re including is something we call PSP Plus!

connect3

Activated from the R2 options screen, PSP Plus! allows you to play Resistance: Retribution using your Dualshock 3 wireless controller. We remove aim assist and increase the challenge level of the game. We even support the vibration function of the controller. If you’re playing at home and want to experience Resistance: Retribution in an all new way, this is it.

That’s it for this update. In the near future we’ll have some news on our multiplayer game. Stay tuned.

  • This is amazingly awesome. Thanks!

  • Nice!!!

Now how’s abutt a PSP Retribution bundle for those that are waiting to buy a PSP for this game alone.

  • It’s good to see some creative use of the PSP and PS3 as a team! I’m curious to see how this will all work in person!

Nice work, and keep on posting! (I can’t get enough of this awesome news!!!)

  • From a larger perspective this is what I’ve been waiting for Sony to say. Anyone else notice that with this psp+, Sony is subtly saying that they know that the psp needs a second analog nub. This leads me to the thought that there aren’t going to be small revisions to the psp anymore. The next step will be the release of the psp2. With this psp+ system Sony hopefully has confirmed that the psp2 will have a second analog nub.

I would urge readers of this blog to remind Sony of the other features that the psp2 should have. The first 2 that come to my mind are a touchscreen display, meaning that the main screen is also a touchscreen, and an accelerometer. The accelerometer would be obvious for games like LocoRoco. Instead of using the L & R shoulder buttons, just tilt the psp2 in the direction you wish the character to go. The touchscreen would be great for casual games akin to brain training. Finally, it would be so wonderful if the L & R should buttons were made to feel more analog.

  • this is like crosstalk, only exponentially better! my only complaint is that you should be able to unlock additional ps3 stuff from retribution…

  • psp plus = awesome feature

  • @93: Also was shown in a nice big picture. So yeah; they’re dumb.

  • Very coll thanks for giving the love to the PSP. These are great features. I cannot stress it enough the value that the PS3 adds to games.

  • Thats some tight info right there! w00t
    RESIST! FTW!!!

  • Thank you, everyone involved with these projects for thinking outside the box and giving genuinely unique functionality to the GBA link cable idea. I love how Sony products are really offering unique and fresh experiences. This comment is starting to sound like an “all-i-want-for-xmas-is-a-psp.com” thing but I’m serious. Bravo, Sony.

  • Buying both.

It would be nice to have the PSP display a map of the area or something through remote play…

  • Sony should make a Resistance Retribution, R2 combo package… so get 2 games in 1… like a SE R:R, R2 thing… But i like this current idea for now..

  • This is pretty cool. I’m definitely excited for it.

  • Heres the plan re-buy Resistance. Go and buy a second PSP the new 3000 version to go with my 2000 darth vader version buy a second PS3 so i can keep my 80GB MGS4 with BC safe. then buy Resistance 2 and Resistance.R Then start the infection!

  • According to IGN, at least from what I understood, the infected part works even on the Phat PSP. I hope this is true. It seems you don’t have to stay connected to the PS3 once you get your copy “infected”.

Looks like no one from Sony and/or Bend is on the blog to respond to our questions.

  • wow must have

  • The Resistance series will probably be my new favorite series once these two new games come out!!!!

  • WE FREAKIN LOST TEKKEN 6!!!

  • That’s awesome.

  • Wow what a feature.. I was already buying both games, but this just sweetens the deal.

  • That is seriously so freakin’ awesome.
Good job for thinking outside of the box on this one. :D

  • Can not wait to try it out!

  • any resistance 2 beta updates?

  • @9
    i so agree with u

  • when is resistance2 beta i heard it was the 17th but it keeps changing

  • Holly $&%&,Count me in on this,This is sooo awesome, can’t wait to get my hands on R2 and R.R,Gotsta love Sony and its awesome studios

One Q,I have yet to hook my PSP up to my TV yet,But when I do to to play RR on my 1080p TV,will it at least output in 480p(Progressive mode),or will in upconvert or will it just be standard Def(480i),I will of coarse be using the component (Red,Green,Blue) cables

  • do you have to be connected to the PS3 all the time while infected or can you disconnect as long as your powered up?

  • I have to say I was a bad person. I kept putting Resistance of this july when I got. This game kicks so many other game I got instead. Well I found it for $17 the other day and I decided to pick it up. Low and behold it is just amazing. I am kicking my self in the rear for waiting. The only good thing is I will get to play them back to back.
I have a psp as well and to see the functions you have added in are going to make it a must to have game. I am a firm supporter now. I just want to give you guys Mad props for an outstanding game all around.

  • Awesome game, as usual. #1 on my to get list.

It would be even better if the *@#%* psp had a second analog stick…… *kicks sony* I mean, sony kept saying over and over that they couldn’t get dualshock AND sixaxis to fit into the same package. Low and behold…I now own a dualshock with sixaxis. I firmly belive if sony REALLY got hit with enough complaints they could fit in the second stick. What? The psp would have to be thicker/wider? Fine by me. I’d like to use my psp for something other than listening to mp3’s or streaming radio for once. Playing games on the contraption is impossible without the second stick.

And why don’t we have the live streaming radio on the ps3? My 60 gig is the center piece of my entertainment system. Why the f**k can’t I live stream music on it like I can with my psp? *kicks sony again*

  • I was already planing on getting both, this is one hell of an extra bonus though. I wish that more games had connectivity between there PSP/PS3 counterparts.

  • Holy crap, this is how you do synergy. If I had a PSP, I’d totally get this.

  • Great! I like the Dualshock 3 support!!!

    GT for PSP needs it!!!!
