Happy Birthday, PS3!

November 17 is a special date for us at SCEA because, as many of you fans know, it’s when we launched PLAYSTATION 3. Two years ago today, we delivered our next-generation console, providing consumers with a gaming and home entertainment system unlike anything in the market – the power of the Cell Broadband Engine, out-of-the-box HDMI support for 1080p resolution, and a Blu-ray drive for high-definition movies and expansive games. The PS3’s launch was also when the Resistance franchise was born, and the original title’s success has spawned a blockbuster sequel with Resistance 2 and a unique PSP installment with the upcoming Resistance: Retribution.

PS3 Anniversary Card

But that’s just what we started with, and PS3 has come a long way since November 17, 2006. If you stood in line the night before launch, the PS3 that you took out of the box when you got home isn’t the same system that it is today. We’ve added new features and enhancements that you all have asked for, such as Trophies, XMB access in-game, Remote Play with PSP, DLNA Media Server capability, and BD-Live support, to name just a few. Along the way, we became the first gaming system to be recognized by Guinness World Records for Folding@Home and, because of the strong PS3 install base, helped Blu-ray win the format war.

PlayStation Network has truly hit its stride with unique downloadable games and a video delivery service featuring movies, TV shows, and original programming that you can watch in HD with your PS3, or bring with you on your PSP. And with 14 million active accounts and 273 million pieces of content downloaded, we know that you’re thirsting for this digital entertainment.

Of course, most important to all of you is the game library, and we’ve seen exclusive titles launch that showcase the PS3’s capabilities, from Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of the Patriots, which takes full advantage of Blu-ray’s massive 50GB capacity to deliver the best installment in the storied franchise, to LittleBigPlanet, whose infectious charm and user-generated content make it a genre-defying experience. There’s something for every type of gamer on PS3, and the efforts of SCE’s first-party development studios (the industry’s largest ) along with our third-party partners will continue to deliver knock-out titles.

Thanks to all of you, PS3’s momentum is stronger than ever. There are nearly 17 million PS3 systems around the world, and in the United States, PS3 hardware sales are up nearly 100 percent from where we were at this time last year. Software sales have tripled from a year ago. Yes, we’re proud about everything we’ve accomplished, and we’re even more psyched about where we’re going with our holiday software lineup (our best to date) and the new Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune PLAYSTATION 3 Bundle, which features a 160GB PS3 and is available now.

We wouldn’t be where we are today without your continued support and all of the feedback you’ve provided here on this blog. We don’t have a crystal ball, but we know that you can look forward to many great games and PS3 enhancements over the next 12 months, starting with the upcoming launch of PlayStation Home’s open beta, which will bring the PS3 community closer together. Then, just around the corner, you’ll have Killzone 2, inFAMOUS, and tons more. So please join me in wishing a happy second birthday to PS3!

  • Happy Birthday PS3! I jumped on board in August of 2007 and haven’t looked back. This blog is a site I visit at least once (if not a couple times) a day and it has made me truly feel part of a larger community, while ensuring I’m getting the most out of my system. Thanks for a job well done on the blog and for keeping things fresh and exciting!

  • Yeah I agree #201 kmac0378, the blog has been a great addition and it does really make you feel apart of something larger. I check the blog everyday for news and something, they always throw us something to chew on, and that is a great thing.

I skipped the ps2 gen , was an avid ps1 owner, and got back to it with psp and ps3 after a long pc only set of years…Once I seen what games the ps3 was getting with the features at $400 last April I had to have it!

  • @FeaturePreacher

Hey bro, remind me to never invite you to a celebration. :)

Thanks for the Killzone video though.

  • “…and expansive games…”

Hahaha, for a moment there, I read it as “expensive”…
Happy Birthday. It’s been a good year, but there’s still a lot of catching up to do if you want to reclaim shelf-space at retailers. :|

  • I GOT A 60 GIG! I’M SO FRECKING LUCKY I GOT THIS AT LAUNCH DATE. I WOULD BE MAD IF I COULD’NT PLAY PS AND PS2 GAMES… Breath of Fire 3, MSG1, Spryo(well it’s downloadable now), Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2, GOW 1 & 2, the list goes on oh and i forgot FF games also. 60 gig is better than all the other versions of the ps3. I ALSO HAVE TO SPEAK ABOUT SOMETHINNG VERY IMPORTANT ON MY MIND WHICH WOULD PROBABLY HELP SONY AND THE PS3 BUT DON’T WANT TO POST IT HERE. NOT ON YOUR BDAY.

  • Wow 2 years already guess it’s true when they say time fly’s when you’re having fun

  • Happy birthday PS3 and I hope that you have many more to come with you in the top spot like your ancestor the PS2.

  • Hope turning 2 is fun PS3! I sure don’t remember my 2nd birthday.

  • I couldn’t get the system day one but I did put my name on a reserve list and picked it up on December the 3rd.

  • I played a bit of Killzone 2 when I went to the eGames expo here in Melbourne, Australia. Few people from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe gave a few people to try out the game. All I have to say is it is awesome…. but there were obviously glitches here and there. I guess we will have to wait and see when it finally releases because the game is like any other FPS game (other than Call OF Duty that is, lol).

Happy Birthday PS3 but do we get any nice treat?

  • happy birthday ps3!!!

  • Congratz! LVL UP!

    Happy Birthday Playstation 3

  • Happy Birthday PS3! I want to thank you for all those long nights of hot and passionate gaming ;)

  • PS3 will Raul forever.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY! PS3.

    Sony Forever.

    PSN ID: stennex.

  • Happy birhtday PS3!

  • loyal since day 1! big ups PS3!

  • Happy etc. Okay, on to business.

Listen, I respect what you guys are doing. I LOVE my PS3; I do. That’s why I want more people to have PS3s. I appreciate that you want more people to buy Uncharted. I think that’s a really cool strategy to support an “old” game like that.

The problem is this: You need to be supporting LittleBigPlanet right now. The PS3 should be $299 with an 80GB hard drive and bundled with LittleBigPlanet. Period. LBP needs to be the mascot for the PS3 the way you can’t buy a Wii without Wii Sports. It needs to be associated with the system. PS3 needs THE mascot, and Drake is not. Sackboy is.

And I know the schtick you guys give in interviews about how the PS3 is ultimately an excellent value proposition, and mind you, it is, and I agree wholeheartedly, but $399 is still too much. Make the money back on software sales and Blu-ray royalties. The most important thing right now is getting the PS3 into people’s homes.

Adding more value like extra hard drive space, Home for free, etc isn’t going to get you sales. People aren’t holding out on buying the PS3 because they REALLY wanted that extra 80GB. It’s because of the price.

  • Happy Birthday PS3! :D lol

  • “…home entertainment system unlike anything in the market – the power of the Cell Broadband Engine…”

I love my PS3 but the power currently is as good as XBOX360 – not much difference. Thats a bit dissapointing!

  • Happy Birthday!!!

    PS3 rocks… WHOOT!!!

  • Happy Birthday PS3. Thank you for the great fun and a truly amazing piece of technology! Who would have thought 20 years ago….such a device could have exisisted.

  • whatisdelicious…NO IT’s NOT b/c of the price. The price is perfect. Sony can’t lower the price they won’t be making any money. Their career is to make technology and make it run better and give it’s best to customers. Let your career be this and you wasting your money to make a customers life better. I bet you won’t. Popularity is a big thing but making and family is the most important of them all (also responsibility). So I believe they should’nt be lowering the price they should just make more systems with lower feature and spech’s then they can lower the price for those. Sony spends to much money on Blu-Ray and it’s probably the most importan of them all because game developers get to expand their games almost to a full extent ex:MSG4 using 50g on one CD. The 360 only supports 15gig CD’s they have a real big limit to making a length of a game and PS3 don’t because of blu-ray. Blu-ray itself cost more than the ps3 if you was to buy it seperately. So let Sony do their job and pick what they need to do about prices don’t comment them about it because of your friends. Tell them to get a job or save up.

  • Its been a great 2years. More than I could ever ask for in a game machine. If I could only get some NetFlix on it that would be the bomb!

  • happy bday PS3!!! my life is ps3 thx you for all the games sony thx you!

  • happy birthday. speaking of 160gb, when is the uncharted bundle coming out? i keep seeing dates getting pushed back, it’s making me impatient. i already have money saved up and i don’t want something to happen that will prevent me from buying it, same that happened to me with the mgs4 bundle.

  • Happy birthday PS3!!! =D
I bought mine on 28 Nov 2006 =D Never regretted it once!
Sony, thank you for all the innovation and great additions you have given us over the past 2 years.. I have a feeling that you guys have much much more up your sleeves for 2009..
Killzone 2 and God of War 3 are alone beyond awesome! Not to mention a new R&C and some new exclusive IPs?!!! =D
YAY!!!!! We still got 8 more years =D Maybe more!

  • I’m Sorry I know is your birthday PS3 but I think this is the most recent place I can post my comment on what I was thinking about.
    Dear Playstation CEO’s or w/e,
My great message is to inform you that I’M LOVE with my PS3. The PS3 is the perfect gaming system that has unlimited update ability. BUT! There is one major problem which I want to discuss about. The online experience. It is cool how we get a web browser, Remote play, Life with Playsation, and much more things.

  • . There is one thing you guys are lacking and I’m positive you can change it. The online gaming experience… The online gaming experience should be blowing XBOX 360’sz XBL out the water with the things you guys can do but your being lazy and just putting these things aside. People would love to privately chat while their doing anything on the system by meaning anything I mean playing any game, watching a movie, on the web, or just privately chatting, we would also like to be able to join into a game a friend is playing from anywhere also ex. im on youtube and my friend is playing socom i would love to join the exact match and everything just like you can with halo in the 360xbl, does it really matters if microsoft fans call us copy catters.

  • NO! IT’s best to give the best to customers.and i don’t think your giving the best yet. I just sold my 360 because i have no use for it anymore, but i still remember the xbl it was so frecking comfortable to just access your friends from anywhere, hear music from anywhere and

  • the MOST IMPORTANT!!! HINT! HINT! IS TO SIGN ON WITH MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS ON ONE SYSTEM ALL AT ONCE. LIKE I WOULD LOVE FOR MY FRIEND TO COME OVER AND ME AND HIM WOULD BE SIGNED ON AT THE SAME TIME ON THE PSN BUT NO WE CAN ONLY HAVE ONE PERSON SIGNED ON AT A TIME. OR EVEN I CAN GO TO HIS HOUSE AND NOT HAVE TO SIGN HIM OFF FOR ME TO SIGN ON. THESE ARE THE LITTLEBIG THINGS YOU LACK. I LOVE PS3 IT IS A FACT. BUT I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE A BETTER EXPERIENCE THAN THE XBL of THE XBOX360… LOOK SONY IF ITS THE MONEY THAT YOU NEED TO DO THIS. I’M SORRY TO SAY THIS PS3 FANS. BUT I THINK YOU SHOULD MAKE EVERYONE PAY FOR THEIR ONLINE EXPERIENCE. I WOULD PAY ANYTHING JUST TO HAVE BETTER ONLINE EXPERIENCE. ANYTHING!!! I KNOW SONY HAS THE POTENTIAL.

  • AND I KNOW YOU GUYS DON’T WANT TO DO IT FOR FREE. IT WOULD BE NICE. BUT NO! THATS WHY THE 360 KEEPS UP WITH THEIR GREAT ONLINE EXPERIENCE. IS BECAUSE PPL PAY FOR IT! IF THEY WHERE GIVING IT OUT FOR FREE I BET THEIR ONLINE EXPERIENCE WOULD BE SUCKY. WELL THIS IS MY MESSAGSE TO THE PS3 AND THE CEO’S. I HOPE YOU HEARD MY MESSAGE. THEIR WOULD BE GREAT CHANGE TO THE GREATEST SYSTEM ON THE MARKET! PS: EVERY SINGLE GAME SHOULD BE REQUIRING TROPHIES! TROPHIES MAKE PEOPLE PLAY GAMES OVER AND OVER AGAIN. AND ESPECIALLY BUY GAMES JUST BECAUSE OF TROPHIES!

  • I BOUGHTSOME GAMES MYSELF BECAUSE OF TROPHIES. YOU SHOULD BE ENFORCING THAT TO EVERY GAME DEVELOPER. JUST LIKE THE 360 DOES. YOU WOULD GREATLY BE MAKING MORE MONEY AND MAKING THE GAME DEVELOPERS MORE MONEY. ONE MORE THING. LOL I KNOW I DON’T SHUT UP. I ALSO THINK YOU WOULD MAKE MORE MONEY IF YOU WOULD PUT EVERY SINGLE PS1 and PS2 GAME ON THE Playstation Store on the PS3. I KNOW IT’S PROBABLY A MASSIVE THING TO DO BUT YOU WOULD BE MAKING WAY MORE MONEY PEOPLE WOULD BE BUYING OLD GAMES LIKE NEVER BEFORE.

  • ALSO KNOW THAT YOU LIMIT YOURSELVES TO RELEASE OLD GAMES SLOWLY TO FORCE PEOPLE TO TRY THOSE GAMES OUT BUT JUST LIKE ME I’M NEVER GOING TO BUY A GAME I DON’T LIKE SO I’M WAITING FOR ALL MY FAVORITE PS1 and PS2 GAMES TO COME OUT ON THE PS Store on the PS3. IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE? THAT IS ALL THANK YOU IF YOU READ THIS MESSAGE. I GREATLY THINK YOU SHOULD CONSIDER SOME OF MY THOUGHTS.

  • Happy B-day PS3…guess what it’s my B-day too…so let’s celebrate playing one of the best consoles the world will ever see…

I know bill it’s hurt because of the PS3’s sale’s and popularity..one thing is for sure he sure can use my fist on it’s mouth…

    happy B-day PS3!!!
