PlayStation: Entertainment Unleashed

207 1

PlayStation Nation,

This is one of the fun parts of my job, when we get to unveil our TV commercials and give you, our loyal fans, a preview of our spots before they hit the airwaves. This year’s campaign is dubbed “Entertainment Unleashed” and for good reason.

The campaign actually began quietly a few weeks back with three fifteen second “tease” executions. Hopefully, you’ve seen these by now. These initial ads depicted various people catching glimpses and reflections of beautiful PS3 game footage magically appearing on building facades across a city.

This weekend, we’re excited to reveal what triggered the excitement. The spot begins with a guy creating a LittleBigPlanet level on a building wall and from there, the PS3 takes on a momentum all its own, spreading amazing entertainment content uncontrollably from building to building throughout the city. The ad prominently features not just LittleBigPlanet but also two other PLAYSTATION 3 exclusive titles — Resistance 2 and MotorStorm: Pacific Rift. And we’ve also highlighted PS3’s Blu-ray capability by featuring Blu-ray movies like The Dark Knight, showcasing PS3’s unrivaled leadership as both a gaming and multimedia entertainment experience.

PLAYSTATION 3 offers unrivaled game content, with not just one platform-defining game, but an array of groundbreaking games across virtually every genre throughout the year that are pushing the envelope of creativity and sheer gameplay.

And at the end of the spot, you’ll see that all this great exclusive content has literally been unleashed on the city and its residents. I know our fans will appreciate spotting some of your favorite games across the cityscape.

This week marks an important milestone for the PS3. And one of the things we’re most excited about as we head into year three is the tremendous adoption and excitement found on PlayStation Network. This year alone, we’ve added great new features you guys have been asking for like a service to deliver High Def movies and TV shows that you can rent or buy and store directly on the PS3’s hard drive; a robust trophy system that lets you compare your gaming prowess with others as well as help you discover everything about the great PS3 games you’re playing; and of course, the groundbreaking Home service, which is just around the corner for all. All of this and a lot more has resulted in more than 14 million active PlayStation Network accounts – a very rapid expansion of a service that we have equally aggressive plans for in the future.

So with its tremendous growth and adoption, we thought it was time to give the PlayStation Network its own moment in the sun with a TV spot that sings its praises. This PlayStation Network ad will also make its debut this weekend. The ad is a metaphor and itself depicts the relentless spread of the PlayStation message from user to user. We’ve featured various ways you can “Download/Play/Connect.” Great downloadable games like Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty, PAIN, Wipeout HD and Echochrome. Free online gaming and downloadable levels with games like LittleBigPlanet. Human connection and community via Home. And downloading great movies like Hancock directly to your PS3 and then sharing it with your PSP.

When we launched the PS3 two years ago, we said we would deliver on the most advanced next generation console that would offer ten years of entertainment value. We are committed to that promise and remain confident that we’re now just scratching the surface on PS3’s potential.

We hope you like these new ads and look forward to your feedback and continued support for PlayStation.

Enjoy!

Peter

PS: Killzone 2 is real and it’s spectacular…

  • love the PSN one.

btw brilliant idea to put The Dark Knight on the ad

  • verry orriginal , i like!

  • ATTENTION SONY

There is one thing missing from the PSN ad.

You guys forgot to mention it’s free.

you should know that’s a big advantage you have over your competition ,,,so get the word out on that commercial,,,edit and add something like”o yea ,,and it’s free” at the end.then finish with the Playstation 3 logo.

so people know that they have to buy PS3 to get access to PSN.I kinda like showing the console at the end as it familiarizes people with the look of the console but the logo also will do fine.

does anybody else find it kinda strange that Sony is not advertising their FREE offerings?

  • The ads seem a little somniferous and forgettable. When going against a competitor that has a $100 price advantage, something a little more eye catching is needed in the U.S., maybe like the URNOTE campaign for the ps1 as seen here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nu-rnXoLsxw

The best thing would be if SCEJ allowed a $100 price cut. But I don’t know if that $18.5 million lawsuit would permit that.

  • Something that might be a good idea would be to pack the official bluetooth headset in every ps3 SKU.

I recently heard that SCEE confirmed that every game on the ps3 released in January 2009 and onwards would have trophy support. Any chance of you confirming mandatory inclusion of in-game access to music and/or in-game screenshots after January 2009? If trophies can be mandatory from then on, why not in-game access to music and/or in-game screenshots?

For anyone who wanted to know, HOME will most likely be released next week. I suspect Tuesday. The QORE beta invitations were just a way to gradually roll it out instead of everyone piling on.

  • Mr. Dille

What do you think about a feature that would allow you to edit the album information for multiple pieces of data in one fell swoop? It doesn’t seem like something difficult to do. When you’re at the album entry for a piece of data, just press the triangle button to access a multiple edit option. This would bring up a screen similar to the ones for copy multiple and delete multiple. You could check off the items you wish to edit, press OK, and then enter the info into a text entry box. Voila, multiple pieces of data will have their album info edited simultaneously instead of piece by piece.

  • awesome!

  • Just the fact that these ads aren’t “Mii-too” is a plus haha. Great job by the way.

  • These tv spots actually make me want another PS3 just for the excitement of buying one. Great job!!!!

  • SHOW THE GAMEPLAY!

Don’t have some wierd stuff trying to intrigue us…it doesn’t work!

    JUST SHOW THE GAMES THEMSELVES!!

    thanks for listening..

  • Why the tease about Killzone 2? :) Incoming public beta? I want it sooo bad, lol.

  • you heard it here first folks! Killzone 2 is really real! YESSS cannot wait. btw the ads are great and i love em all. and yes i have started my xmas list and 160 gig uncharted ps3 is on it. I want another ps3 for my room since my 60 gig launch is in the living room.

    peace,
    Lh

  • it’s about time we get some advertisement. All I see all the time is xbox this and xbox that. No wonder everyone thinks xbox is the only console out there. Keep the commercials comin! Let the public know Playstation is the best console

  • i rly liked the PSN commercial :]

  • Awesome, very creative and original! This is great advertising!

  • I’ve seen two of the ads the other night. They both were on Adult Swim.

Although the actual campaign is available here, I’m gonna wait til I see it on air.

    its gonna be exciting.

  • Great stuff! Let’s see some TV commercials now.

  • I haven’t yet bought the P S triple, does that still make me loyal?

  • update: sorry for the second post. I just saw the LBP one on adult swim just now.

Head on over to Adult swim(cartoon network).

They are full of the new Playstation ads.

  • Oh, and about those downloadable levels in LittleBigPlanet, it would be a good idea to incorporate a self-contained moderation system.
Let players rank the levels in terms of how offensive they are. Then when searching for new levels, there can be a threshold set for what level of offense a player wishes to expose themselves to.

  • Those ads look really good! I haven’t seen any though :(

  • When can we get PSN cards in Canada???

  • $399 dollar Happy Meal toy. I told you way back this holiday was going to be a fail. You can blame it on a $50 price cut/economy if you want. The first one they tried didn’t work. People looked towards the games and that is what they saw. Not only the trouble in quality in finished products such as Socom, but also rewarding developers who do nothing to use the functionality that has been supplied to them over the year. Give them a spot on the store, great. Just because they are there doesn’t mean you should care. They get paid. All this still looks as if the company is silently begging. PS3 is still a system of have and have nots. Great way to end a post with the realization that KZ2 is awesome and you could be playing it, but your not and will not be if you buy one this holiday while others are. Just like the peoples faces in the first video. Outside looking in. I have over 100 games systems I have never traded a game in, but most of this years games have been so bad I actually did. LBP is on the cutting block. You can’t even make a smooth curved radius in the create mode. All blocks and deteriorating circles. Look at what’s high on the rating system. They offer tricks with no game play or quick trophies.

  • i cant wait to talk about this crap in HOME

  • These videos are so awesome!! Everything about the ps3 is so great! Here is to 2 more AWESOME years for the ps3!!!!

  • @mrcaine

    I second that.

  • The next PS3 update feature should include a bank loaning system so we can buy all these awesome games lol

  • @123

I cant wait till your 360 is fixed either

  • finally. i’m getting sick of seeing all these xbox360 ads. =)

  • Sony you need to say playstation3 at the end
and not just show the name!!!

The more you hear it the better its common sense, and little kids that cant read get the name stuck in their heads.

  • @WHAT

Maybe you can get it again when Sony gets it act together and put backwards compatibility back in as well. Just look at what happened with rumble.

  • WOW
    AWESOME CAMPAIGN!!!
Now i wish we had these ads in Australia.
All we get are the boring Buzz Commercials….

  • Nice, loved the last two videos. I want those t-shirts! Haha if only…

  • i have to admit guys, the new ps3 ad’s are awesome. prolly the best video game console ad’s i seen so far. much much better than the previous ps3, psp ad’s…. im sorry but the other ad’s you kept showing like dustballs and crying babies is just plain stupid.

  • The second and third commercials was very effective ads.Way better then the xbox 10 seconds ads :)

  • Sorry but these are some of the wrost ads in the world.

Try showing some of the actual games. I know if I didn’t have one, these wouldn’t make want one. Instead it makes me ask “what the hell they smoking?”.

  • Great ads, especially the 2nd one with LBP, R2, MS2, and the Dark Knight.

  • WOW! Now THESE are some great advertisements! Especially in light of the . . . um, well, creepy and strange advertisements for the PS3 that have been in the past!

  • The music on the Entertainment Unleashed ad is just terrible. I had to check if I had another video or something running somewhere else on my browser that was causing that noise. Other than that I think they are good but should run with ads that are specific to a game like LBP ads and R2 ads

  • Finally! Seeing advertisments like this is great. These are much better than the other past ones SONY! Now I’m excited to see the PSP advertising campaign tomorrow.

With the PS. Blog redesign, Playstation.com redesign, Playstation Network ID for all the Playstation sites, these new PSN, PS3, and PSP advertisment campaigns, with Killzone 2 around the corner, and oh wait….did I mention the release of Home??? SONY is gonna start kicking some real ass and this is why i bought a PS2, a PS3, and a PSP, cuz I know SONY never holds back…although things get delayed quite often lol. But neways, keep it up guys!

  • Not too bad. Honestly though, I liked the “Universe of Entertainment” ad campaign better.

  • i was really excited about the ads but were are the bundles? I was really hoping for a good bundle. =/

On the other hand, I really like the ads but i suppose that those are only for the US since i haven’t seen any on TV in Canada

  • What you have done now…. just do it often, that’s all the Playstation brand needs more, advertising, and don’t forget Europe fgs…

  • WOW. Just WOW! I love those adverts, they look REALLY awesome! love the first one the most though, what with the chimera smashing up an apartment, then motorstorm flying out of the window haha

  • PLEASE HAVE AN AD WITH SOME NEW ROCK SONG WITH SOME KILLZONE 2 IN THE BACKGROUND!

  • I agree on the PSN ad, SAY ITS FREE! That’s your biggest advantage over M$! And indeed hearing the words PlayStation 3 at the end of the commercials gives a special exclusive touch.

Home will be most likely out soon, so I don’t see the harm of showing that in a commercial. Its one of the PS3’s advantages.

And I also agree… show the actual games, make the commercials funny or even more family connected, target on “everyone”, not only on the informed (hard)core gaming community. I find these beautiful don’t get me wrong, but I’m not sure if these commercials would convince the regular consumers as mentioned by others.

I can’t find it but a PSP commercial which is shown in the air in Europe is really a good one and an example of how to draw more people to the PSP.

I also would appreciate it if you could make commercials with “female” gamers as well. Its like female PlayStation fans don’t exist in Sony’s marketing strategy.

And may I say that sales are making me depressed? Don’t feel like holding a whole speech of what I think should be done, but one thing is obvious, it ain’t the games their fault.

  • Oh and I’ve promised to mention it with every post I place around here… RPG fans… get Valkyria Chronicles! Can’t say it enough, its for sure one of the best games of this year :-)

  • Love the Seinfeld reference:)
