PS3: Not Just For Games Anymore

214 0

Hi Everyone,

Starting tonight, our Video Delivery Service campaign officially launches with our first airing on Monday Night Football, but we’re giving our loyal fans an early look right here.

When the Video Delivery Service launched on July 15th, we broadened our content offering to include TV shows and movies to make the PS3 the total entertainment package. With nearly 1000 full-length movies and 2700 TV episodes for download onto the PS3 or PSP, the Video Delivery Service brings you digital entertainment right into your living room (popcorn not included). So check out great titles like The Dark Knight, Hancock, Iron Man, Family Guy, and much more.

The TV spot uses humor to convey that the PS3 is not just a gaming machine but also a “movie downloading machine” when a guy tries to win over his skeptical girlfriend. You’ll have to watch the TV spot to find out how this classic guy vs. girl face-off plays out to see who wins in the end.

And don’t forget, you only have until December 31, 2008 to save $150 on the purchase of a PLAYSTATION 3 by signing up for a PlayStation credit card!

We know you guys are a vocal group and we look forward to reading your comments. Enjoy and roll the video!

Where are those numbers from? If they’re from VGChartz, then they’re quite unreliable.

  • Sony did we not learn from our mistakes with the PSP and UMDs? Hmmm…..

The video store prices are way too HIGH! Not to mention you only have 24 hrs to watch it once you press play and the video doesn’t have special features. I’m not suggesting you lower the prices to $1, but make them competitive with other services. $4 for HD and $3 for SD should be fair since we can rent from the comfort of our couches. I mean come on $6 bucks for an HD download? Also why is it $2 more than SD. You can rent Blu-Ray for the same price as DVD’s from blockbuster/netflix! Honestly, the commercial is great, but until the prices go down, I think you just wasted your money on advertising!

  • and its still not available in Canada…

  • As soon as you guys have implemented Samba or NFS support, then the PS3 will be the ultimate gaming/mediaplayer machine!

  • @ F3aturePreacher

The first set of numbers are from EA. The US Little Big Planet numbers are from the NPD, the Japan numbers are from Medcrate and the The rest of the world numbers I got from IGN Australia.

    Your welcome. :)

  • Good start, now give us more. “It plays music” etc. However don’t forget to advertise GAMES!!

  • @40cal

    In the U.S., 215,000 + 141,000 = .356 million.

Where’s the link to the IGN Australia article(s) for sales outside of the U.S. and Japan?

  • EUROPE! Nuff said.

  • Great Commercial.

  • Typical trick type dudes will let their girlfriend punk them out of playing games to watch lame movies.. But with NERDY friends like in this commercial, I’d rather let my girl work the PS3, while I work her out her drawls. No way I would invite those loser’s to my house.

  • Europe plzzz :'(

  • There is more to the world then the US.

  • People love to whine and complain, because they never know what’s going on. They just complain.

People in Europe, licensing agreements would be different from country to country. It’ll take more time for the service to come to you.

Sony has already said that it will find its way onto the PlayStation Store there in time.

  • It is their own choice to have the current licensing scheme set up right now.

Plus, how hard could it be to have some people put a signature on a dotted line? If only they cared a little bit more about the rest of the world.

  • @156 feature p your not understanding my point at all . 1 sony and ms did not come in to this being 2 and 3 in console sale if you think that then you have no ideal about business mine friend . 2 your ideal about price cut a fully loaded ps3 because of the sell of a 360 core make no business sense not in profits or common sense .3 stop your nonsense about ps3 vs 360 because it dumb and have no point to why there not 1 in console sales the wii is and at 249 it out selling the 360 core 199 look how the price cut help them they still cant beat the wii sales . 4 as for games sell i wasnt talking to you about that but ok if you want to jump in someone here ask why the ps3 didnt have alot of rpg like ps2 and why there more shooter so i told him check the number on sell and you see why am not going to list every game like you but the ps2 had more rpg then the first xbox i dont know why you fighting that point . feature p if you not sure you made the right purchase on the right console then that you and your ego ps3 and 360 are two great systems so let it go there no big 360 vs ps3 war and for what? being number 2 oh yea that make a lot sense in your world and if 40 cal right then you have no point .

  • You have a very versatile machine and you need to bring it into the mainstreams attention. Also there are a number of strengths compared to competition which you can point out e.g free online, all-in-one, etc.
This ad is the way to go and I hope there are some connecting storyline ads in the future.

  • Oww really, according to promotions PS3 was a movie station right from the start :-P

And if the waiting continues on in Europe I’m gonna pack my bags and move to the US next year! Fed up with the constant waiting. I’m glad games are region free, WTF couldn’t the video service be region free *sigh*.

  • @womfalcs3 like Europe is still waiting for their f*****g PSN tickets! If that takes more time we may be happy to see the video download service.. ow.. maybe somewhere in 2012.

  • am so sick of anyone making a ps3 vs 360 beef or war whatever you small mined people call it . you act like children with your comment what next mine bigger then yours or how about mine dad is better then your dad ps3 and 360 are two great systems and if you think you made the purchase then you mine friends are small mined and have an ego problem . ps3 making money and sell, 360 making money and sell can anyone be happy for both company on that? i dont understand the big deal on who winner in systems sells when they both are 2 and 3 in sell let it go people you wasting time with this try growing up some.

  • sucks thats Japan doesn get movie options. even if we buy them on PSN we can’t download them.

  • Thank for finally advertising other features of the PS3. I understand that you are caught between a rock and a hard place. You can afford to make another price cut in order to be profitable so you need to continue sell all of the features of the PS3 to make people realize the value of their $400 investment. I think you have done a good job of advertising blueray (Blockbuster machines and TV ads), now we need to see more commercials like this for HOME, Games, PS Store, Internet, Remote play, Music, Pictures and did I mention GAMES, GAMES, GAMES!!! Excellent job on the commercial, now keep the momentum going.

  • @chriscowboyd
You say RPGs aren’t popular, but 4 of the top 10 best selling PS2 games were RPGs. I can’t believe an entire genre could go from so popular to so unpopular in just a few years.

Sony is not giving RPGs a fair chance. And that’s probably why most RPG fans are not buying PS3s. Fans of all genres bought PS2s, but the PS3 is pretty much limited to shooter fans.

I don’t understand why Sony wants to turn the PS3 into a shooter-system. The original Xbox was a shooter-system, and look where it got them: only 24 million shooter-oriented Xboxes were sold, compared to 140 million all-genre PS2s.

I would also like to point out that Mario Galaxy – a platformer – has outsold Call of Duty on the PS3 and 360 combined. So, I don’t think platformers and RPGs are anywhere close to dead.

  • @172 your right but what am saying the big 3 ms ps3 and 360 are looking at shooter . rpg was on top untill xbox show us halo now every systems want a halo killer not a ff killer . i dont hate rpg i believe there a place for them and who know maybe people will get tried of shooter and want more rpg. also i play fallout and that an rpg and i love it if you can get someone like me into rpg it may be back on the rinse agin

  • we’re going to need more then movie. We need more anime, TV shows, and more game shows like G4. The Xboxc 360 beat us on anime, and TV shows. If we can get CSI, and Law & Order that would give PS3 it’s potential.

  • @174 that true and all what you saying about content but what ps3 really need is dvr i was looking at play tv and if they can bring that to the u s it will be large here . am gald sony is thinking outside the box when it come to the ps3 .

  • Thanks kim Nguyen, very funny lol. :)
@ 51 & 55 i agree. i also go to redbox every tuesday new movies $1dollar just a few blocks away. Neflix, Blockbuster, & Cable “optimum” charge way to much no can do.
@ 106 agree 95% :) @ 113 i think you can redownload up to 5 times only. Sony you need a PS3 price cut, $500.00 160gb is to high for alot of people. Alot of people are buying the WII just because of the price. Note: i did not buy my PS3 it was given to me as a gift :) and yes i do love it. Wow i’m off the subject hehe. sorry kim :)

  • When will you guys get this service to Canada?

  • Why not finish the commericial with a graphic overlay of “Get it for as low as $249.99 with PlayStation Visa Card”

    ????

  • Can’t wait to get this service in Canada!

  • Finally. A commercial that highlights what the PS3 can actually do. I disagree with ones who say just stick with the games. They are only focused on what THEY want to see, not what will appeal to a broader audience. I can’t name 3 games on the Wii I even want to play, but its selling like mad. The PS3 has now got the games angle covered. LBP, Resistance, MGS4, Uncharted…all POTENTIAL system sellers. But the biggest hurdles to having more people buy it are:

    1) The cost: You do realize its nearly twice that of the competition in an economic crisis…right?. If not, you might want to send Sony HQ the memo.

    2) The fact that many think that its just an overpriced Xbox.

There should be a line of commercials like this one that show the different features of the PS3. Bluray, Web Browsing, etc. Have a family go into a best buy, each wanting something different and have the sales guy show them a PS3. Then have the Carls Jr. narrator say…”PS3, it can do that” or something like that. Keep the commercials funny as those are the most memorable.

Either way, this is a great step in the right direction.

  • AMEN Brother!!!!

“I like my PS3 way more then my Xbox 360, it’s more reliable and I like the interface and that its more user friendly. However the one thing my 360 has going for it is the streaming Netflix service.

If you’d just offer some sort of subscription service for streaming video like the 360 has with Netflix instead of having to pay for each movie or TV episode, I would start using your service rather then Netflix on my 360. But until then the PSN video service is just too expensive and not worth it.”

  • i really like it , you need to show others ps3 features in commercials like this simple, funny but very straight forward , i hope you guys do the same for the games too, you have an amazing upcoming line up in 09

  • lol.. why you have to buy 2 ps3’s?
    should ppl have 1 first?

  • mathdufort@hotmail.com

Canada? Sony? we live just up there… And we have TVs, we don’t all live in the woods…

  • That was a funny spot for the PS3. You guys better do a damn good job marketing the hell out of KZ2!

  • Get this on the UK store soon or I’m buying a 360.

  • Would’ve been better if she brought him home a Blu-ray copy of The Dark Knight.

Great commercial. Saying “the new Motorstorm” was a nice realistic touch.

  • As a canadian i cant do that on my ps3:(

  • CANADIANS:

Be sure to check out the new “NetFlix” type service for Canadians at:

    ZIP dot CA

  • very nice my only problem though is, WHEN is this service going to be offered in CANADA??

  • @Canadians
Your country’s copyright/licensing laws are a mess. Why should Sony go through all the effort to get access to less than 750000 potential customers? They will yes, but I can tell you it wouldn’t be a top priority on my to-do list and I doubt it is on theirs either. If you don’t like getting shafted whenever a service like this comes out (MS had to go through the same crap with XBL), make your [DELETED] politicians get your laws in shape.

    @Europeans
Get one language, one government, and one set of damn copyright laws and see what happens.

OT: Nice commercial. I agree with the person above who said you’ve got the games thing down. Now you’ve got to show what it can do besides play games, because the competition can play 80% of the same games for half the price.

  • You guys should make Region free movies on Psn, im bummed that i cant buy any movie from the PSN the movie store doesnt appear =[

  • SONY WHEN I EUROPE GONE GET THIS FEATURE TO????? WE AR WAITING FOR IT.

Please can somwhone tell me when this is comming to europe? i am a huge Movie fan.
Please Sony i am begging you to tell me when this is comming.

  • nice commercial. I like how it makes it clear what the feature is, because some of the commercials for the PS3 have too much happening for the average consumer to notice.

  • hey, that was actually kinda funny at the end. haha

  • Canada still being ignored. :(

  • Can anyone help me get my avatar?

    BTW nice add

  • and Europe to! sony is not carring abbout Europe.

  • Although the commercial is funny as a female gamer I feel heavy offended. Again you wipe off your female gamers as unimportant and that kind of tick me off.
