CES 2009: Who Won the Street Fighter IV Event?

That’d be Team PlayStation, as represented by Joe C. (no relation to this guy) in the CES Street Fighter IV event.

Capcom threw one heck of an event: swank hotel suite, 4 PS3 Street Fighter setups with the official, upcoming Mad Catz arcade sticks and Fight Pads, and a bracket of fighters ready to whup each other up in Street Fighter IV.

Street Fighter IV Tournament Bracket

The last man standing was Joe C., who powered his way through the tourney with Sagat. He Tiger Uppercutted Major Nelson‘s representative, Josh (via E. Honda), in a dramatic title match, to claim the spoils (a limited edition Star Wars Battlefront PSP bundle), and defend PlayStation’s good name.

Joe C wins the Street Fighter IV Tournament

Joe then took on Justin Wong, one of the very best Street Fighter players in the world, who came out on the winning end with Chun Li.

On the, um, less competitive end of the spectrum, I managed to take my first round match with Guile, but went down 3-1 against Alex N. in the 3rd round. Got to let someone else win the prizes, right? ;-)

Thanks to everyone who came out (some from as far as Florida!!), thanks to Joe C. for donating his awesome skills to the cause, thanks to Justin M. for taking the pics (more here), and extra special thanks to Capcom, who have something else to announce: That wasn’t your last chance to get your hands on Street Fighter IV before its February 17th release date.

If you’re going to be in the San Francisco area this week, they’re holding an even bigger event on Friday night. Want to attend? Head over to Capcom Unity to find out the details.

  • Capcom truly rocks. Now if only they could get us Okami on the store, DMC4 trophies, and a brand new Onimusha.

Too bad SF4 comes out few days before Killzone2. I’m a huge SF fan, but in February, my money will go to GG. Should get SF4 in March.

  • why can’t any of this stuff ever take place in NYC?

  • Good times!

  • @8 bronxchulo
I know right. New York is always getting left out of everything.

  • So awesome we can look past the console rivalry to see what all really brings us together; the great games. Props to team PlayStation and Xbox, shouts to Major and Jeff!

  • Too bad Major left before you,Jeff. That would have been a good match :)

  • Stoffinator

Way to go PS team! But all he got was an outdated PSP? lol

  • DeforMAKulizer

    Team PS rule! =D
Great job Jeff in CES… Sony PWNED! =D
Can’t wait for new updates, and future stuff from the blog!
Wish you took up the Major hehe…

  • I hate people who play with M.Bison, Vega, Chun Li all three are cheating characters not that there hard to beat. But there moves are easy to do and easy to win with. mainly Chun Li if somebody have you in the corner.

  • Congrats Joe! Thanks for playing and winning for the PS team.

  • Screw you M$ boys we WON!!! :D Thank you Joe C.!!! You seriously kick ass :)

Major\’s always a good sport, and so was everyone else in attendance. Don\’t forget – fanboy hate is only for the internet!

      (And Raiders games)

  • Jeff,
I know you didn’t get much time out of the booth, but did you see anything that just wowed you? (besides 3d)

    • Jeff Rubenstein
      Jeff Rubenstein

Ha, that\’s what I was going to say – MotorStorm PR in 3D. I really didn\’t get to leave the booth – but I can\’t wait to get my hands on the final retail copy of Killzone 2 now. Played it a *lot*. Upcoming post on that, btw.

  • @Jeff
I guess I should have been more specific :)
I meant Playstation Blog events. You know, like the ones you had in Florida and Seattle with members of the blog.

    • Jeff Rubenstein
      Jeff Rubenstein

Ah yes. We\’ll be doing more of them, we just try to sync them up with other goings-on.

  • smokey_vols

You mean you guys didn’t get the final match on video for everyone to see? Ohh come on, what’s up with that???

    • Jeff Rubenstein
      Jeff Rubenstein

That was the plan, but it was tight quarters, so you couldn\’t get an angle.

  • That’s awesome.

  • What did MS give there winner?

  • Thanks for the link, lol, you can also see the back of my head here!! also, how bad I am losing…hehe

  • @13 : the “outdated” psp is the cherry on the top. The real prize is the eternal fame Jerry C. can now claims around the PSN and the Whole Wide World.
There’s not such thing as beating the *$$ of of a good countender coming from the dark side of gaming.

Hourra for the PSTeam and everybody behind this event. Now what I need is somekind of killzone2 event in Paris :)

  • superaktieboy

later you’ll hear Major Nelson say “But I couldn’t use an Xbox 360 controller” lol

    • Jeff Rubenstein
      Jeff Rubenstein

We were all using the Mad Catz custom sticks, so it was truly a level playing field.

  • Hey Jeff is the Resistance Retribution demo still coming out on the 15th for those of us who pre-ordered? I can’t wait to play it.

  • Thanks for the blog update on this. It’s really cool to see how the “arcade” scene has evolved, as this seems much more social and connected.

    • Jeff Rubenstein
      Jeff Rubenstein

Really, that was the best part. Everyone getting together and having a great time.

  • Nice, congratulation! musy have been a nice event

Off topic, i want to know if the ballet of death killzone 2 trailer will be release on PSN? (sry for the off topic but i had to ask)

  • RatchetFanatic

does this mean the PS3 won the console war? will microsoft game studios close down?

  • YES! The Eagles pulled through Jeff! Anywho, know anyThing about anythin PlaySttion event related coming to Toront? If so, let meknow bro,

  • Jeff can u post the street fighter video so we can see how Joe kick everyone’s butt!

  • Nicely done Joe C. and team PSB! I’m sure you learned a few things from playing Justin Wong, multiple EVO champ and SF legend.

  • Wow. Nice job, Joe! The PSP was a nice gift, but I think getting to play against the godlike Justin Wong in an exhibition match is reward enough, no?

  • If I were in the area I would so go.

    Oh well lol

  • I’m proud to be a PS3 fan and owner!

Congratulations dude!!! Way to rep PS3 Joe C.

  • Are there any videos of the battle?

Which system did they play on PS3 or 360?

  • @48 i think they played the arcade version not sure tho

  • @Jeff
What about Comic-Con? That is next month, or is too late to plan for an event like that.
If not comic-con, what about Digital Life this September. I know Digital Life is a long time away but I think it might fall around the same time as the Tokyo Game Show event.
