Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.
The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.
The 2.60 update also includes:
- Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
- DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Will the PS3 ever accept h264 in an MKV Container?
Now that divx uses that (DivX Plus™ HD), PS3 should also accept this format, it is annoying on always using MKV2VOB to get the videos working on the PS3.

Umm… my controllers don’t register wirelessly after the update to 2.60.
Corded they work just fine. These are new controllers and the PS3 shows them fully charged so it seems to be a pairing issue (not resolved by connecting directly).
Anyone else have this problem? Or anyone know how to fix it?

After the restart for the update, I powered off the system and turned it back on. Connected the controllers to pair them and now they work wirelessly again!

nice update Sony, but i have been having a problem with the in-game XMB, i was all excited about the update, and when i got it, i wanted 2 send messages in-game, and i did for a few days, but sometimes, when i msged in-game, the game would freeze at the reply screen, like it would just freeze my controller to where only the PS button works, so i have to quit my game, and then get back in if this happens, and it has happened to my brother as well, hopefully u guys can fix this, because every time i get a msg in-game, im afraid to check it because im afraid my game will freeze :(

Okay. I have a technical problem, and I am not sure if it is because of the update or just a coincidence of bad timing. After I downloaded the update, any movie I have tried to play will freeze up the system after a minute or two of playback. Games seem to still be running fine so far. Is this a firmware update issue or is there something going wrong with my hardware? Any help is appreciated.

The new Photo Gallery is amazing with all of its smart features, great job guys! Really impressing.
I have one comment about it though. I just wish If I can use the new Photo Gallery with an external Hard Disk. Like a USB Flash Disk. Or maybe any removable media.
I collect my Photos and Videos on an external Hard Disk, so it would nice to use the Photo Gallery without having to copy them to the PS3.

In the middle of downloading this new update my ps3 freaked out sending a crazy distorted picture to my tv. Now I turn on the unit and get no picture at all. I use a hdmi cable but, tried the old composite one just make sure it wasn’t the tv it wasn’t. I tried the reset deal holding the power button got the beeps and still nothing. At the moment my ps3 is just a shinny black paper wait what can I do?
wow, migration went very good, thanks to all the great/wonderful people working at sony obviously, I just have one problem. The update is great, don’t get me wrong, it’s just, as much ideas that are being requested daily, I had the notion that there would be way more. Like I stated ealier; it’s all good but just lacks that umph the SONY ALWAYS BRINGS!
I don’t know where else to go put this but I am having a problem with this new update. When I go to slide show in the photo gallery, it wont play any songs. Including the ones off my hdd and the tracks that are supplied with the photo gallery. Ive deleted and reinstalled the gallery and it still doesn’t work. Any suggestions?
Photoalbum looks pretty cool. Is there somewhere a wish list of future fw features ?

I’m not sure this has been requested as there are alot of posts but…
We have 2 PS3s at home. Each has an external hdd connected and close to 400gb of movies + another 15000 songs. As the collections have gotten really big, it’s a bit time consuming to scroll through so many files.
So would it be possible to implement a SEARCH feature for perusing through media files? Either by the letter the file starts with or possibly with a search box?
That would be awesome. Also, THANKS for the improved divx support!! Between that and HD m2ts/ac3 playback, our PS3s are great media centers.
Now if I could figure out how to just have one network attached drive that the PS3 could see as an external drive, I could get rid of the duplicate libraries on each of the externals :)..gotta research. Something to do with DLNA I think?
Come on guys when are we going to get to play music while we are playing our favorite video games whats taking so long
good update, nice to see how the ps3 is evolving and great job.
but can you fix the clock and battery indicator its anoying
another thing i like was when i was viewing a video the video was still playing and i can navigate the xmb i hope you enable that again, and please made that an option so anyone will be happy
and what about screencaps, at least give us and options for the videos so we can have screenshots of ours movies at least.
and finaly please is not that hard i think, but can you create more backgrounds for the music the earth is beatifull but after hours its boring and repetitive, what about a pack in the next update like the photo app it will be good and much people will be happy.
I would really like to see .MKV support for those of us backing up our Blu Ray movies.
I’m also looking forward to some day being able to:
-Play my own music during a game
-Multitask while transferring files over the network – you can do this while downloading from the Playstation Store but not copying files from a computer or other device, so that would be greatly appreciated.

Great updates guys, I love the multimedia features of the PS3 and the new photo gallery adds that much more.
I do have a request for a future firmware update though, can you guys please add a general screen resize option? The reason I ask for this is because when I use the web browser or play upscaled PS2 games, a lot of the screen is cutoff and I can’t see important information (such as my HP/MP in FF12) because of the overscan on my HDTV, which is a 5+ year old CRT.
@Arcusiq: You do so already! In the browser, press the triangle, then as I remember, from the View menu choose Maximum.
Give us DivX7 (mkv) support already. Please!
hey, i reckon that in the next update we should be able to have a party with our online friends who are playing other games to ourselves and may be on total different screens or games and will still be able to talk to eachother through headset.
xbox 360 can do this and i thought it was awesome and straight away wanted ps3 to do the same.

I do appreciate the photo app. I am big on two types of media on my 160GB PS3: Family photos and my MP3 collection. I really commend you guys on some excellent firmware improvements, and while many may be asking for various features, I would like to ask if we can get back to basics and fix some of the Music menu functionality.
If you are like me and have imported thousands (13,655 to be exact) tunes, it is a *terror* to browse through the list of songs with the current configuration. At the simplest level, just the feature of a “page up” using one of the left triggers and a “page down” using one of the right triggers would do a WORLD of good here. On a more complex level, perhaps an app for music comparable to the app you have created for photos. Just *something* to make life easier for the folks who are using the PS3 as their music hub. Was thi not what the 160GB was partially intended for anyway? :)
Again, keep up the fantastic work fellas. There are many such as myself rootin’ for yah…maybe just privately in most cases :)

i did your update now my headset dont work when im on socom 3 why is that and how can that be fix i have the 60g ps3 all i used my ps3 for is games stop doing update i dont need them all is does is stop my ps3 working right thanks
The multimedia feature in PS3 is a bad joke. It’s a fake.
If you want a multimedia, buy a WDTV or similar.
PS3 accept H264 but only in Sony container file.
PS3 accept AC3, DTS but only phisical devices like DVD, BD or cheating the system like AVCHD or transcoding the source. Physical in an increasingly virtual world.

Anyone else having problems with 2.60? My system is not bricked or anything but I am having video problems (screen flickering) and the sound for my disc based games skips/cuts out randomly. I have checked all my cables but I am still having trouble (BC capable 80GB with HDMI)
i loved the new update 2.60 but like zektor said it would be awsome for a music managment program and the ability to cross talk with people in other games like for example if im in home i could call someone playin cod4.or if im playin skate 2 and the other guy is playin burnout we could cross chat! That would be exelent!!! p.s. a music player for games like the 360 has would be nice!!
HELP!! OK RE5 demo has the same audio problem as my disc based games (guess I did not notice it because I usually only play my disc games). I would greatly apprecaite some feedback on this, SF4 comes out soon and so Does RE5 we need a small update to fix these hiccups, the audio skipping is really grating on my nerves. Like my above post I am using HDMI for my audio. I hope someone sees this!!
I’m having problems with the latest PS3 update (2.60) and Photo Gallery. When I launch Photo Gallery, the image on the TV flickers real bad and I can’t see the menus. I called Sony support; the guy told me to delete Photo Gallery and download it again, but I still had the same problem. He then suggested I might try formating my disc but it sounded like he was just guessing that it might work. It sounds like a too drastic a solution so I didn’t do it.
Any suggestions on how to fix the flicker problem with Photo Gallery.
Has anyone encontered any problems running home since the update, my brothers ps3 just freezes when the hdd indicator comes on after stating the home program.
Was on home just before the update came out, stopped, completed the update, tried to log back into home and … nothing.
He still cant get it to work eve after deleting it and re-downloading it.
On a different note, the items in the update are a good addition. I never used my ps3 to view photos until now since the new photo thing makes it easier to browse through them and find stuff.
Got me thinking though, seems like the music player could use the same ideas to allow for better sorting and searching for music instead of the folder system currently in use. This combined with full i-pod support (not just being able to view the music in a random file format) would do for music playin what this update has done for photo viewing.
Hope this is considered for next major update along with expanded movie file support as I still have several movie files that will not play on my ps3 despite being perfect on my pc.
The only other addition I would like to see is the ability to add direct links to web pages from your bookmarks to the xmb such as u-tube, bbc i-player etc. THis would save alot of time starting your browser and having to go through several menus to find the bookmark you want before loading the page you want to get to.

its great. i love the photo gallery app. Whats going on with Life with PS? its been freezing up lately and now have of the cites are gone.
I really would like to know when are we going to get an update that will let the ps3 bitstream high def audio. Its great the ps3 decodes high def but I would love for my receiver to do the job. (I want to see true hd or dts hd light up on my reciever) COME ON ALREADY

After the update, my sound in it’s entirety just quit like the whole system is on mute, I’m running on S-video with basic sound cables
u guys should make a way we can change our avatars into actual pics of ourselves.
With the FAT32 limit on external drives, the PS3 needs some form of displaying multiple movie part files as a single movie. For example: “Some Movie1” and “Some Movie2” being displayed as “Some Movie”. This should not be hard to implement and would drastically improve the HD media functionality of the PS.
What about the music? I wanna be able to listen to my music in games without having to quit. If that update is made I would be forever in your debt.
Ps3 needs to come out with something like the xbox’s in-game music player. Need to listen to my music to get pumped up for cod.

We desperately need more control over grouping content on the PS3 hard drive, for videos, pictures and games.
1) Ability to add custom folders with custom names e.g. I want to put all my anime movies in an ANIME folder, or put all my wedding pictures in a WEDDING folder, or all PSN games, demos or PS1 games in their own folder, etc.
2) When multiple files are being selected, have the size displayed on screen so we could more accurately determine how many more files can be selected to copy to another location/drive. 3) An alternate way to view files, like a grid view, or an overlay with the alphabet to sort files alphabetically. This could apply to music, video or PSN games because when content piles up, scrolling down a list becomes a chore. You have to stop every now and then to see if you’re in the right place. 4) Some way to import album covers directly from the internet, this would help make music feel more like a collection. 5) Surely the PS3 is powerful enough to allow us to use the XMB to view pictures, play music or movies while files are coping in the background similar to how it works when downloading content.

I want to request CC (closed caption) decoding on the PS3 so it can be inserted into the HDMI video. My wife is deaf and right a lot of our DVDs are useless because we have the PS3 hooked up via HDMI and can’t get the CC signal to the TV.
i think one cool update that SONY should do is to let us hear music while we are playing games and also talk to people that are playing different games than us
sony u guys should check the forum that shows u an amazing psn profile design that will make our head’s turn and mouth water check it out it’s PSN gorgeous!!!!
Im hoping that the next update will add a sound for when you receive a new message on the PSN (much like when you get a new Trophy).
