Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

Eric Lempel's Avatar Posted by SVP, Marketing & PlayStation Network

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

Photo Gallery looks awesome!

PSN ID signing in works great, but when I sign into the PS.Blog, then head over to PlayStation.com, I have to sign in again. Do we have to sign into each site individually?

I think the Emulator would be better if they had to purchase from the store, as many of us got on board very early and got the ps3 with BC and would be a waste of space to do this in an update. Make some money off those who waited for the price to come down to get in the game.

Cool glad you guys are still doing updates, great job not something I use but o well great job none the less. Why do people want in game cross chat or whatever, do you have to talk to somebody not in the same game as you, just call them LOL, or perhaps its because you want it to be like Mr.Gates abomination. You guys do realize how complicated that is right, its not something that can be done over night, if you think about it they will need a server dedicated to voice chat. So not only will they need a firmware update but buy another server, think hard on this stuff before you whine because you didn’t get what you wanted.

Nice! I was waiting the new system was up to make my first comment :)

This playstation blog is awesome, and its a nice way to keep people misinformed, something that has been happening lately in Europe.

We need a European playstation blog (preferably not a UK exclusive one) where we could know for example the reasons why a game gets delayed, or news about PS1 games released in here (Theme Hospital looked like it popped out of nowhere and that’s not how it should be).

ThreeSpeech makes me think that SCEE does not care about Europe at all.

FIX THE CLOCK!
FIX THE CLOCK!

FIIIIX THE CLOOOOCK!!!

Are any comments about the clock invisible to Sony insiders?

Also, custom avatars please. No more naff icons. I want a simple pic of me smiling. Maybe with some kind of hat on.

oh….one more thing…

I love gaming but I also use my ps3 for it’s other capabilities….it’s my gaming console, my movie downloading machine lol…my blue-ray player…when i’m too lazy to get my laptop i use the ps3 web browser…i use the eye for youtube vids and myspace pics…this really does improve the way to view photos so thank you sony

Pretty cool update. I might actually load up my photos onto my PS3 to try this out. I’m also loving being able to post as my PSN ID on the blog. Keep up the great work guys.

That’s freakin’ awesome. No wait, I hate free stuff! I demand a price tag for this feature! XD This video will keep me warm until I get home.

Just one request I REALLY would like: when I hit shift+backspace on my keyboard it deletes the entire message. This has caused massive problems. If an option to turn off this feature could be added I’d appreciate it.

Thank you once again. =)

One major gap in media support is DTS audio support over UPNP. Any chance of this?

This update looks nice I love the new photo feature that will be comeing towards us.

But when will there be new avatars for the Playstation Network? We need 2 or 3 more at the mininum.

I also think the About me in the profile should be extended.

Migration was seamless and easy!! :) New update looks to improve on some media portions of the PS3.
But when are gonna get features like cross game chatting (like Live), cross game invites (like live), im all 100% Playstation fan but i played on the other system recently and the cross game chatting and invites are something the PS3 could definatley use and benefit from. I like being able to talk with my buddies and we can be playing different games. Or the fact i can send him an invite to play me in some socom while he is playing little big planet. I think the PS3 can use these features or even improve on them. Creating a party with more than 2 friends, so we can talk while we all join the same game would be an awesome addition to the PS3.

Good I guess, but I wanted a simple feature (connected to PSN while playing optical disc like DVD and Blu-ray).

Advil_Yum said:

Awesome job with the migration – I’ve wanted to post here for a while, but never wanted yet another ID to keep track of.

As for this update, it looks really nice and loving the gallery. But, can you use it with a DLNA server on the network, or does it have to be on the local PS3 HDD? I’m assuming that it’s local since you’re organizing photos into groups, etc, in which case, it won’t ever get used in my house. Contrary to what Sony wishes, I don’t trust my data to actually live on the PS3.

My dad is a movie guy. Loves to watch films at home on his HDTV and at the theater. This past Christmas I bought my dad a PS3 because I wanted to get him the best bluray player on the market. He absolutely loves it! He told me that it is the coolest present he has gotten in an extremely long time. He was like a kid when he opened it and started hooking it up. :) What surprised me was that he played his first video game (Mirror’s Edge) on the PS3 since Spaced Invaders on the Atari! For someone who hasn’t touched a video game in 20 years, he did very well. Got past the training and prologue in under 2 hours and received his very first trophy!

This new feature is something I know he’ll love. A way for him to see his grand kids on the television.

Thanks Sony for making my dad feel young again!

In my opinion, cross-game chat is a MUST in a next-gen gaming platform. Heck, I’d settle for universal same-game-chat.

For those of you who haven’t experienced it, you’re really missing out on one of the most exciting and enjoyable experiences of online gaming.

…no really PLEASE!! stop with this useless updates….. but seriously.. this kind of things OK are great but after most important feature… PRIVATE CHAT!!! we’re asking you since ps3 launch and since firmware 2.40! there’s some kind of technical problem or what?

It’s frustrating to play online and you can’t speak with your friend because there’re 9 years old kids that scream in your ears! ..really all the comunity is asking for this… please

Thanks for the update… Does this Photo Gallery option work only with photos stored on the internal HD, or can you also use it with photos kept on an external storage device?

Money1 said:

cross game chat…now can someone tell me why i would want to chat with someone playing a total diff game of a probably total diff genre

Letters2Kay said:

January 20th, 10:12 am

I would really like invisible sign in, please. A lot of people are complaining about being overwhelmed by invites in LittleBigPlanet, and it’d be nice to be able to play online levels in single player or create and publish content without such hassles. I’d also like to visit the store without having to exchange mail with people who see me online and want to chat when I’m not up to it. Please?

What’s with consoles having their features broken off into separate apps? Photo Gallery, Life with PlayStation, Netflix, XBL Photo Party, every channel on Wii, etc. What the hell happened to integration?
