Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

1,717 0

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

  • Interesting feature but… how did you guys actually miss implementing custom folders on the XMB? Myself as well as many no not wish to edit photo statistics and have them organized as such. We’d rather: Create Folder X – Move (whatever images we like) to Folder X. Just like on PSP.

Organization would be much simpler this way. Really… should have been there at PS3 LAUNCH.

It would seem that the Sony development team are more into taking playing with their PowerMacs with taking an artistic approach rather than providing CORE FUNCTIONALITY that GAMERS want.

  • Money1:

Of course people have clocks in their houses. But not necessarily in the same room as their gaming machines. And not necessarily easy to see when in the middle of a gaming session.

The quick access to the XMB is awesome — but not being able to see it for three seconds is annoying…and completely avoidable.

It would take Sony 30-seconds (maybe less) to change the location of the battery icon (or move the clock down a few pixels so that we could see it).

Their refusal to do so is just baffling.

  • Great update!
Keep looking on that Cross-Game chat and fix the clock bug and you´ll have the perfect gaming machine!

  • You still can’t access the PSP FORUMS on a PSP. For goodness sake, let us have the original Lithium PlayStation forums. They load perfectly fine on the PSP.

  • So still no fix for the broken trophy system? I’m avoiding playing games because I can’t get trophies to unlock, so right now I only have a blu-ray player…

  • @244

    can’t you just ignore?

  • Nice media-focused update, I’m sure there’s a few minor tweaks here and there too. Can’t wait to see what’s next! I don’t think everyone realises this isn’t all Sony’s been working on for the last x months, this is just what’s ready.

  • It looks really nice. Can’t wait to try it out. Hopefully it runs with little hiccups.

Logged in as my PSN ID =)

  • Hi Jeff, thanks for the heads up!
As always, Sony is rising the bar for the PlayStation experience.

    Thank you!

Also the transition was very fast and easy.

  • Hey Jeff, I did the account corssover thingy and it went smoothly, but I had to reset my blog password as I didn’t remember the one I had originally put in.

I’d like to know how I can change it though.

BTW, nice update, but it would be nice to get cross game chat/invites and custom/more ‘official’ avatars on the XMB. Oh, and fix the battery sign over the clock already, its annoying. :P

One more question: when are the ‘auto-updating’ official trophy cards coming? Its annoying to have to use the current ones that require us to manually add trophies.

Other than that, keep up the good work!

  • Thanks for the feature Eric. Are there any plan for implementing new features for the music section? Thank you.

  • Yay, PSN-ID support. They only reason I have never posted a comment on this here blog, is because I didn’t want to set up yet another online ID. Good stuff.

  • Thank you Sony!

  • Well, I’m finally here. Obama ftw!!

Anyway, nice update. I was wondering when there would be a new one. Nice to know you guys are still hard at work making the whole PS3 experience so much sweeter.

Eric you have a very memorable voice. haha
After watching this video I want to put more pictures on my PS3 just to play around with the photo gallery. :D

So Eric when is the PS3 going to be able to play flv files? hmm?

Where is Grace? I want to know what’s coming to the PS Store this week!! D:

  • please add the 16:10 support!!!!

  • Looks Great! Thanks Eric :)

  • Well, I had never commented here before–now that PSN IDs are integrated I’ll be commenting more. (the number of different logins I needed to have was annoying, in my opinion)

Comment #6 or so mentioned hard drive subdivisions, etc. (for external drives). I’d like to go one step further and say that I’d love it if I could use my external drive (networked drive) for music streaming in XMB music games. I.e. when I play PixelJunk Monsters or Warhawk (2 of my favorites) I can stream music from my PS3’s hard drive–why can’t I stream that music from a networked computer or hard drive? I can play that music when I’m not in-game but I don’t want to waste my PS3 hard drive space on music if I have an external drive specifically for that purpose…

  • Nice add this new photo program. But I’m more interested in the DivX 3.11 support! That can be really useful! =D

  • DolphGB @ PS3 Attitude

Jeff – what can I say. Photo Gallery looks outstanding – can’t wait to get my slightly yellow European teeth into it…

PSN migration went smoothly except the Blog name / PSN ID issue, which you’ve already logged.

  • I would like to see YouTubeTV added as a launch application on the XMB instead of having to hit my bookmarks (or changing my default home URL) for it. Integration is best.

    Nonetheless I love it Sony.

P.S. Some PSX game centric update would be nice, as there are games that still have issues (such as Silent Hill, huge audio issue with that game on the PS3).

  • Thanks Sony, new multimedia features are always welcome. I am still hoping for some new PSN features as well. In game private chat and a smoother invites system would definitely be welcome.

  • Money1:

Cross-Game chat allows you chat with your buddies, no matter what you’re doing on your PS3. So instead of awkwardly holding a cell-phone to your ear while trying to play a game, you can just chat while playing.

You could be playing the same game against each other, or a different game altogether.

It’s a blast to talk with your pals while gaming. Especially when you’re playing against them (and the game doesn’t directly support mic chat).

If you haven’t tried it, you really should.

  • Pretty nice update. Hopefully we get some more music visualizations and some of those future avatars you were talking about Jeff.

  • nice update :D

  • woo ive been waiting for psn log in

  • a very nice update BTW

  • cool update but we seriously need Cross-game chat and cross game invites, not that crappy invite system that sucks.

  • ok first i’d like to say, that this update is a good one, so thanks for that. now…

1.what can we look forward too next?

    2. Im dying for my own personal music within my games, so as for custom soundtrack/in game xmb music, or whatever you wanna call it, will it ever come into fruition? thanks sony, gonna go update and try this out now.

  • Thanks for the update

  • Nice update, can’t wait

  • great this looks fun!!

  • cool update but we seriously need Cross-game chat and cross game invites, not that crappy invite system thats currently on the system

  • About time they released an update

  • Oh… forgot to mention. CROSS-GAME CHAT! Thanks!

Been wondering why I cant use IGXMB to chat with people while playing any game, browse the web, shop the store, etc.

Also wondering why can’t I ACTUALLY MULTITASK while on the XMB and using XMB features… really… if KZ2 can look/run that good I’m sure i can browse the store from in any game, use the web browser, etc.

CORE FUNCTIONALITY FIRST – you guys don’t even have a good FOUNDATION YET and you’re coming out with apps like this.

    Fire your dev team, please.

  • Interesting firmware update. Also, now that my PS Blog and PSN is merged I am the true Neil ;)

  • Update looks cool, but i hope it’s not mandatory. (I have a feeling it will be) I pray to anybody that it’s not. I am now scared, nervous, just leaked in my pants :( Sorry people but i hear the word “update” and it freaks me out. To ME it’s like 95% good, 5% won’t read disc etc, 5% fried. I’m sure “i pray” everything will be ok. Sign: Mr paranoid

  • NathanJ, you’re an arrogant absolute idiot. Just be quiet.

Multi-tasking capabilities are essential in this generation. If the PS3 does not catch up with the capabilities of the XBOX 360 in this area, it will fail miserably, and that’s the simple reality that everyone needs to accept.

  • I think we would all prefer features and functions that are related to gaming somehow.

  • Cool new features.

How about adding mkv support like in the latest Divx?

Can I use this photo app with pictures not stored on the local drive via the media server?

Just wanted to add that the the login went fine, it has my avatar from the PSN ID but it’s still using the non PSN name.

  • Have that many PS3 users really requested a new photo organization utility?

    I can’t believe that.

This makes me regret taking the time to fill out all of the PS3 surveys that were emailed to me.

Because clearly no one is reading them.

  • Nice update… I presume it’s a great effort to provide such a valuable lifelong product (ps3) support.. Thank Yoy!
How about creating some kind of interactive calendar/organizer (monthly/weekly view), which would provide us with the info of upcoming ps3 titles and other events (for example future game releases and accessories, so we could plan our purchases, links for some any sources considering those games, the info about some special ocassions such as upcoming double XP points weekends like Treyarch and Infinity Ward do, then give us the opportunity to add our own info.. maybe it’s not so imprortant and valuable.. the main thing it should be accessed very easily.. something like an upgraded info board, looking like a calendar…

other functions that would be very appreciated:
    1. resume playback functions for audio files.. at least for those which are longer than 10-15 min for example, so that listening to the long tracks like mixes would be more easy.. then a scroll function for audio files for fast accessing any point of the track….
    2. the search function through your music “library”… more music organizing features…
thank You for your great work – it makes my system feel always fresh and very enjoyable!

  • wooow thanks sony for the update
anyway i love sony very very much ( keep up the great work )
i hope to see more great titles like KZ 2
and i hope to see sonic the hedgehog more often on my PS3 thanks again sony
and special thanks for you eric

  • No the PS3 does not need to be like the XBOX 360, it must be better… and in order to be better it needs some of the same features, and some better ones. It already has the better features, now just needs some of the same to put it over the top. Talkin to your friends while playing a game has many advantages. I talk to my friend all the time about gaming, unfortunately i have to call him on the phone while doing so… i hate talking on the phone! In home we can call each other, via call a friend, and talk while in seperate places which is way cool. The game invite system could use some work, but not be like xbox. I hate getting invites to a game that i’m not playing, if i wanted to play that game I would be.

  • It’s great to finally be able to post on the PSBlog. I have been waiting a long time for this synch to happen so I didn’t have to remember another password.

Hopefully you guys here read a few pages further so I can get feedback, I noticed a “game” sorting on the sort menu that was brought up in the demo. Does that mean that the PS3 will soon have much more screenshot capabilities than it currently does? I hope you make all your features like this one and the in game music a mandatory feature for devs like you did with trophies very soon.

  • @Jeff

Any chance of the PS3 getting Netflix support? Any excuse I have to use my PS3 instead of my 360 is appreciated :)

  • I thought that you could also look at your friends and see who playing and send messages through your computer. I suppose i was mistaken…

  • Sounds great, can’t wait to update.

  • I did say update was cool, a welcomed edition :)

  • Good stuff, when this update will be available?

Hi Jeff, i noticed too that my PSN ID doesn’t show up on the Blog, i hope it will get fixed soon.

I have another question, does trophy information from our accounts get implemented to this site in the future? I noted in the European Playstation site when you login with PSN account they mention in the future about adding the trophies too.
    Thanks in advance.

  • hey, looks like a lot of people beet me here… hope my PSN name shows *Link01* .. glad you guys finally pushed this out :)… and this photo application is great.. now let’s hope for a video one :)… but what I really want to know is when are we * if ever * going to see in game chatting.. just wondering :)
