Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

1,717 0

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

  • Very Cool. I actually sold a PS3 for you in about 5 minutes by showing my dad his childhood slides on my PS3. The next morning he had me pick up a PS3 on the way to his house.

One question- I use an HPMediaVault for holding all my pictures and other media. Will the new gallery use this as the storage, or do I need to copy the pictures locally to the PS3 (which will be a problem as I only have a 160gb drive with 80gb available!)

  • sounds great!

id like to see more updates tho

  • Migration Complete :)

  • @272

Ahh i see…not really a feature i need or want since i have 2 headsets and usually on phone while i game….2 headsets come in handy…if the people want this then i guess the people have spoken…sony should consider i guess…gaming consoles aren’t about gaming much at all anymore lol

  • Looks great! Hope to see an update to play .MKV files soon.

  • @290, a bit like firmware update feature requests mate. DivX 3.11, whoop do, that’s almost 8 years old and just about dead. Give is V7 if you want to get with the times. Photo album on the PS3, well that’s good for 3 people I guess.

  • and of course at least one more new visualization.. or make that fluid one visualization change colour – not only purple…

  • Please dont fix the clock overlap !!
    Pleaseee !

  • TXNY:

If we all keep requesting cross-game chat (and a real implementation of in-game custom music) perhaps for Firmware 2.70 Sony will develop a nice spinning globe with temperature read-outs for only ten cities in the world.

Oh wait, they already did that.

Then maybe a nice checkers game.

That should keep us happy until the knitting application in 2.80.

  • -hmm no one needs the psn store guests browsing.
the divx 3.11 update is fine

but where are some great new features/bugfixes like:
    -better browser stability (freezes)
-fix the clock/ds3 xmb position screen
-implementing cross-game chat / voice messages!!
    -easier custom soundtracks ingame support
    -faster trophiescreen
-add save savegames “more than one file at time”

  • Even with DivX 3.11 support, the PS3 still has a long way to go before I will use it as my media player. I currently use a Popcorn Hour, but there’s no reason a PS3 shouldn’t be able to fill that role if Sony fixed the following:

    – FIX USB drive support. Why do we have to have our files sorted in VIDEO, PICTURE, and MUSIC folders, when other media players can find files in any folder?

    – Support SMB shares. Why should we need to run a “DLNA” server on our computers, when other media players can connect to any regular shared folder.

    – Support MKV.

  • First of all, thanks for 2.60, and keep up the great work !

    Like all these before me,

I would like to know about Divx 7 support. Ps3 is a certified Divx product right ? … right ??? ;)

We can already play MKV by re encoding them, but its a pain. I would be very happy with Divx 7 support.

  • When can us Canadians expect the video download service?
Also I’d like to see some new avatars for the PSN.

  • wow after months without an update that’s all we are getting? pretty lame if ya ask me. where’s the better profile pages of your friends list, see what games your friends played last etc.. cross game chat /sigh

  • This sorting photos due to colour and people in photos sounds extremely good.

Although, I would prefer it built into the XMB as opposed to having to open up a separate application. I just cannot see myself starting this application when I can view the photos instantly on the XMB.

  • and forgot :
    298 silverthorn ;)

  • what sony needs to do is add 16:10 support

  • nice update, but i still want in game chat, and leave a voice message, please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
make the friend list more friendlier like joins a game a friend is playing from the xmb.

  • DivX 3.11?

    That was released in 2001!

    Good grief Sony…

  • Sorry, forgot to add that there is already a 300+ petition for MKV support out there :

  • This is cool but you guys really need to focus on the gamers here. People might use this right when it comes out or a few other times but is not something for gamers which is why most people buy the PS3. Please start adding features like cross-game chat and inviting as well as add new gaming applications. THE NUMBER ONE FEATURE I WANT ADDED IS A FEATURE TO WHERE YOU CAN CLICK SOMETHING ON THE XMB AND IT TURNS THE FANS ON THE HIGHEST LEVEL TO GET THE DUST OUT OF THE SYSTEM.

  • Great! Thanks to sony for the continued support of a great Entertainment Center…

  • Cool features. When is this update coming?

  • Nice, Divx I was waiting for this :D And even asked on the forums

  • You guys never stop amazing me =] Even with the economy the way it is you still take the time to bring out all these amazing features.

  • my ps blog id still shows up but not my psn id

  • looks like a good update.

But when are you going to lower the price of the ps3?

  • @12 YippyKiAy
“But for the next update, you should be able to have two separate PSN IDs logged in at the same time”

i wish they would that already
Please Jeff put the word out!

  • Online competitive gaming is becoming the catalyst of these next-generation consoles. I don’t consider Nintendo Wii to part of that due to its primitiveness. I promise you SONY, if you do not start putting more of an emphasis of the improvement of PSN and online gaming, the Playstation 3 will fail miserably, and you will lose many of your most faithful customers.

  • My first comment

  • Cool update! But why is it 2.60? It’s not that much of a change. But I still appreciate what you guys have done with this one. Can you guys also give us cross-game voice chat? If you will, PLEASE DON’T MAKE US WAIT LIKE WE DID FOR IN-GAME XMB! PLEASE! Make this your New Years Resolution.

  • i see my psn avatar but still not the id…just lettin you know

  • cool update, this is definitely going to make it easier and a lot faster to make slideshows from my trips, and get my dad off my back.

since you’re trying to do more w/ media, it would be cool if you could add a similar feature for the video section where i can edit video from my camera, add background music, and maybe even add it to youtube? :-)

  • so when do we get to listen to our music in game? i’ve been wanting that for soooooooo long.

  • I guess I’ll be the jerk here. I don’t mind these updates but this is seriously lacking. When are we getting more custom avatars? When will I be able to change the font color from white to whatever I want?

I want updates that further improves my online gaming. I cannot tell you how choppy voice communication is when I play any game online. “What…can’t hear you, say it again…you cut out…enemies where? WHAT?” Thats basically my online session in a nutshell.

This photo thing you guys released is cool and all, but I thought I bought a Playstation 3. Not Photoplayer 3.

  • This is a nice update for some, but myself, I don’t have pictures on my PS3. When can we expect an update to play our music in-game, like the 360? Or, how about being able to start a Chat, but instead of the boring chat Room, we can go play games and still talk, just like the 360. I would love these features. Yall should also add more Avatars, and PLEASE let us download demos, games, themes, ect. WHILE we play a game. I’m also pretty mad my friend gets to download the new add-on for GTAIV, The Lost and Damned. I sadly cannot. =(

  • Two important things you guys will never bother to do but should:
    1. Much better display output options (add universal scaling to one resolution, add support for other aspect ratios, add universal overscan correction)
    2. Full BC for every unit.
You don’t seem to know that these two things cost you sales, where the lack of anonymous access to the PSN or lack of a photo gallery app haven’t cost you a single sale…

  • Hello from France :)

You’ve done a really great job with that new feature !

    Keep going PlayStation team !

  • Thanks for the for nice looking update!!

Good idea for being able to use my PSN account for the blog, nice and easy.

Possible ideas for the present and future: new avatars, showcase 3-d trophies, don’t forget the PSP, and advertise Killzone 2!!!

    Keep up the good work.

  • fellow ps3 owners…keep whining…sony is sure to come around

  • Oooooh, look who got caught with his eyes closed in the picture! ;-p

    (Thanks for the update!)

P.S. Can you guys throw in a quick fix to move the controller battery meter down just a tad so it’s not covering the clock when users hit the PS button?

  • Dear Sirs,
just i have one suggestion if you can added in your new firmware
in wifi section please add multiple wifi recognition coz i have to wifi network in my area and when i can to connect or disconnect to another i must resetting my configuration it’s complicated

    Thanks in advance regards

  • nice update, the new photo app is definitely good addition to the PS3. People must remember PS3 is not only gaming system but also some use as multimedia center.

For those talking about “Cross-Gaming Voice Chat” system should change the name to “Cross-Application Voice Chat” meaning it can be applied to not only Game(A) to Game(B) but more of Watch Movie(A) to someone playing Game(A) or Photos(A) to PSN Store(B)
    – (A)(B) person A, person B

Also add skype to PS3! we got it on PSP, now add that to PS3 and we can talk from PS3 to PSP.

Q: Haven’t tried Skype-In but does that work wit PSP? (When not in Skype that is). I tried Skype Out and that works nicely through the PSP.

  • I’m going to be purely frank here. As a gaming console, the PS3 is pretty good. As an online gaming console, it is absolutely horrendous. As a media hub, it is horrendous. Multi-tasking is the essence of technology usage. You need to accept that reality, and fast. The PS3’s multi-tasking capabilities are less than that of my 7 year old Dell Inspiron laptop.

  • 2.60 is OK, I guess — but how about creating a “Location Free” app to really enhance the multi-media capabilities of the system? If you can do it on a PSP you should have no problem doing it on the PS3. And speaking of multi-media enhancements…why won’t Sony sell an HD tuner/DVR in the USA when they have done so in Europe? These two enhancements would be a true multi-media improvement.

  • Nice feature!

  • Maybe this time they will think about fixing the game-breaking bug that makes Chrono Cross (PSOne) impossible to beat? Or at the very least ACKNOWLEDGE the bug in their Compatibility List?

I am still mad that I had to send 4 e-mails to their support and they haven’t even lifted a finger.

  • It’s a very nice update i guess i just expected something more or different.

  • I wont use either of these features … meh

  • @ GOTHDOM i agre!! more visualisation for the music player, but in my case comes to my mind the visualisation of the PSone that one that you can control with the sticks get it faster slower bigger tinier and you can save a preset, that was awesome…

also it would be great a program feature for the music player that was also available in the PSone…

…i just started to comment just to use the psn id…and look all i wrote jaja
