Resident Evil 5 demo live on PSN today

Hey everyone, I’m Shawn Baxter (Snow) from Capcom-Unity. Our amazing Resident Evil 5 Demo goes live today on PSN, so I thought I’d tease you a bit with some of the cool things to expect, whether you’re an old fan or new to the series. One of the first things I noticed is how good the game looks. It’s hard to get by the beauty RE5 has to offer. Better still, you get to play through two beautiful stages in the demo. Aside from the sweet graphics, there’s plenty more that the demo has to offer.

For those new to the series, the controls can seem a bit different than you may expect. The RE brand has always forced you to take your time, stop while shooting, and conserve your ammo. It really helps add a sense of tension a normal shooter can’t offer. But to help those who are new to the world of RE, we have new control types that ease things up a bit. My favorite is Type A, which is probably best if you’re a fan of the previous games, especially RE4. Next on my list is Type D, which I find myself loving more and more. Type D is best if you’re new to the game, and it offers something the others don’t… Strafing! May seem like a simple thing, but in a game as tense as RE5, it can really help in those situations where you have little time to react.

Alright, so I’m sure you’ll love the graphics and controls, but there’s something even better that the Resident Evil 5 demo has to offer: Co-op. Best part is, you can play co-op online over the PSN, or even split-screen for some couch co-op. Now, of course you can play single player, but nothing beats actually playing through with someone who can plan and strategize with you. For an RE game, the fact that I can play with a buddy adds a whole new level of fun. Nothing like getting into a swarm of Majini, and having your partner shoot a few in the face so you can uppercut or flip-kick one of them!

Once you’ve played through the demo, you may want to try taking on the Executioner (huge axe-guy) with a buddy. The first time you play through the demo, run! He is extremely tough. But once you get comfortable with the game and controls, try and bring him down. I’ve tried, and he is extremely hard, but it is indeed possible to kill him, so don’t give up.

Oh, and a quick tip I’ve found is to aim for the heads on the Majini so they stagger back. Chest shots work, but one shot to the head means only one bullet expended, then push Square to pull off one of the crazy powerful melee attacks. If you get them to fall on the ground, run up to him and stomp ’em with your boot or stab with the knife if you’re playing as Sheva!

February 2nd is just around the corner, so add me to your friends list, and I’ll catch you online for some co-op Majini butt-kickin’! PSN ID: Snow_Infernus

See you online!

  • Oh yeah, and the demo is only 900MB, not 5GB, but they could be talking about the retail version of the game. So, for all of you out there that haven’t downloaded it because of the size, fear not, it’s only 900MB.

  • nice online sweet finally another demo like BFBC or LP

  • I’ve downloaded the demo and can’t install it. I keep getting an error message saying that there was a problem with the install operation. Does anyone happen to know what I can do to fix this? HELP!!!

  • Hey Shawn

I have a few questions that I’m sure will get ignored, but why is there a 5GB mandatory install on the PS3 version? Why not make it optional? I have an OG 60GB but I have less than 500mb left and it sucks I can’t enjoy one of my favorite game series on my PS3, so I’m forced to get it on my Xbox360, thanks :(

Next, I know this isn’t a final representative of the game but can you tell me why the Xbox 360 demo looks better? The PS3 demo has frame drops all over, blurry scenes and graphics are not up to par compare to the 360. Is this an early build and the Xbox 360 version is just further away in development?

  • nice im going to download this

  • You said “Aside from the sweet graphics, there’s plenty more that the demo has to offer.” I agree, there is also broken online coop, framerate issues, recycled RE4 animations, no custom soundtracks(which is understandable for a demo), and crappyportitis. Those are all things to look forward to in this demo.

I can live with the controls and the recycled animations but I am f**king tired of all these multiplatform games being inferior on the PS3. Why does it look better on the 360 Capcom? I would rather play this game on the PS3 because it has better controls, a nicer interface, and better online yet you spit in the face of PS3 users everywhere by offering us this inferior port.

Most other developers have figured out how to make PS3 games look equivalent to their 360 counterparts and PS3 exclusives blow everything else away. And yet here you are , Capcom, acting like it’s 2007 where crappy PS3 ports are the norm. If there is a solid reason outside of time restraints that the PS3 version isn’t the nicer looking one than I would like to hear it.

  • Weee! This really turned my sucky day around! Thank you!

(SCEE if you follow the US blog, this is how to do things you, you…worm infested offspring of molasses :))

  • Damn…..
Capcom what’s up. Why are ps fans being treated like
    we don’t spend money?

BC-rearmed no trophies or cs, fine. What’s next.
SFHD no trophies ookkkk…. 5gb installs still so far,
    in 3 titles.

How do u delay a DEMO to another system!?
RE5 feels like what u guys picked up on in your new business
method. So far it does not feel like re. The crimson zombies
would have been fine, but THERE ARE NO ZOMBIES!!?

Keep dead rising, if you port us anything let it be RE 0 and 1,
Or give us something new. So far capcom, man…. i wanna
say SF4 CE is bought your other games no.

    Only your classiscs.

  • you guys at the top mean a 5GB demo!!! or a 5GB install for the full game? im just curious…… BTW…. KILLZONE 2 BABY!!!!! YEAH!!!! ONLY 25 DAYS!!!!

  • Nice that Capcom doesn’t come back to answer some of these concerns. I guess this announcement didn’t go over as well as they were hoping.

  • Do you mean a 5GB demo!! Or a 5GB install for the full game? Just curious…. BTW…. KILLZONE 2 BABY!!!! ONLY 25 MORE DAYS!!!! YEAH!!!!!!

  • @161

Its the install for the game not the demo.

  • @Techp13
the full game will have 5GB install

  • @156 – It means the download is corrupted, delete the file and download it again, it should work.

  • PS- I know u guys are trying to appeal to the western demographic.
But we bought a japanese system to play japanese games.

You kats have a very quirky yet innovative formula which is
y we buy. Don’t let a disstasteful, dishonest american
company have u lose that. Money is replaceable, not u guys.

Spend wisely ps3 fans, MS is leaving a very horrid taste,
    in the gaming community mouth.

  • awesome. i cant wait for the game. awesome.

  • @168- I didn’t buy PS3 to play jap games.

  • Ugh, I don’t like the look of Resident Evil 5. Terrible controls, ugly looking graphics (just because it’s detail is good, doesn’t mean it looks good).

What is this game even trying to be? A horror game? And action game?

It’s not scary enough to be considered a horror game. Maybe a game that failed at trying to become one, but that’s it.

It’s no where near good enough to be an action game. I heard you can’t even move while shooting (on the default layout), or reloud while moving. The aiming system is terrible, and the camera view is too. Your guy moves like he’s a robot.

I’m basing this on RE4 and gameplay videos I’ve seen. From my point of view, the game looks terrible, and I think the only reason it’ll get any high scores is because of the hype. Gran Theft Auto 4 – Okay game, high scores, because of hype. This will probably turn out the same way (I’m being generous and calling this game “okay”).

I really, really hope I’m proven wrong.

  • what about the controls?!

i want to shoot with the X button not the square!

this game is good though not what i expected no more zombies…more action now than horror, but still survival. i love the resident evil series since im a big survival horror fan. i own alot of them.

  • @170 u must be multi console owener.

Maybe i worded wrong, let’s try this..
The only american games thats hot are sports/fighting,
    Japan as everything else covered.

  • I could not find any “Move and Shoot” controls in the demo. Can we get some official news as to whether this is in the full game? Control scheme D does NOT include them

  • THIS GAME SUCKZ
    THIS DEMO SUPER SUCKZ
    HOLY CRAP
I WENT 2 GAMESTOP THIS MORNING
AND TOOK MY MONEY OFF THIS CRAP
    THIS DEMO IS SO DISAPPOINTING
    HOLY CRAP

  • make X the acion button instead of SQUARE

and make SQUARE the run button instead of X!

    please and thank you!

  • The game rocks but the capcom service for PS-gamer is a big dissapointment!

    – demo 2 month later
    – PS3 version looks worser as XBOX
    – 5GB installment

  • Thanks a lot for this, have been an RE fan ever since the first chapter on PS1 =)

  • Any word about DLC for this game when it comes out?

  • this game is over hyped and not that good. The controls are horrible and if your looking for a good horror survival game get Dead Space, not RE.

  • All these complains are starting to worry me. I can’t wait to try out the demo tonight.

  • I have a bad feeling that this Resident Evil is going to suck. I’ve played the others (minus RE 3) and this one has no signs of that “Resident Evil” feel to me.

It’s a good thing the demo is here because it’s going to either save me the money of buying it, or it’s going to give me hope that the full game will be great.

  • i don’t know why people are dogging this demo…….you complain about it being classic RE style but if they changed it 2 much you would complain and say they out everything you love about the series and 4 the people complaining about the 5gb install…….shut up and go buy you a bigger hard drive because apparently you need 1 anyway.

  • This is pathetic Capcom. Why does the 360 version look better when PS3 is clearly the more powerful system? Stop being lazy.

  • dead space is dope but i think the co-op makes RE5 have alot more of a replay value.

  • this isnt the finished product every1 and if you truly believe xbox is better go buy a xbox but we all know what the better system is……..all i have 2 say is Killzone.

  • Played it earlier and enjoyed it. Definitely picking it up next month.

  • @187

Go play the 360 demo. You will see it does look a little better. Although I have not noticed any frame rate issues. Don’t assume everyone is a fanboy because they say something bad about a said system.

  • Loved the original games on my Dreamcast and was looking forward to the “next” gen of this game… but unfortunately I’ve been spoiled by modern controls and just can’t seem to go backward to clunky control systems.

Please, please, please learn from this. You need to make controls customizable. My husband is a lefty who prefers switch sticks/inverted look… he won’t play this game and I was looking forward to buying 2 copies and playing online co-op using our 2 PS3 units. As it is, I won’t even buy this game for myself because the controls are so last gen. It might still be a rental, but you’ve lost 2 sales by not moving with the times and realizing that control systems simply need to be “this” gen.
    :(

  • How weird! I’m just playing through RE4 for the first time! :D
    Damn Regenerators! :P

  • Jeff,

I have a question regarding 2K’s MLB Front Office Manager released on the PlayStation 3. After picking the game up, it stated on the back that it has Trophy Support, aswell as many other things.

The problem is, there is currently no Trophies available. Can you exknowledge this and find out what the deal is?

    Thanks
    SpookyJuice

  • Wahoo! This game looks freakin sweet. Cant wait to play!

  • Holy crap!…….. no, seriously i just crapped myself.

  • Great looking demo…but the controls are slow and unresponsive. Interface is clunky too. Is there anyway to change weapons on the fly? Kinda disappointed

  • Finally got to play through the demo. Here’s my only problems with it:

Control is tough to get down. None of the options feel right to me. In classic RE4 mode, SQUARE and X are reversed, so I’m constantly pressing the wrong button. Because of Resident Evil, I always try to set my controls to R1+X for firing weapons. I hate it that now I’m actually playing a RE game, and it’s set wrong and I can’t change it! Also, I love RE4, but I’ve gotten used to aiming with my R STICK since then, and using L STICK feels forced. I’m sure I’ll adjust, but I just figured out of 4 control scemes, one would feel right from the start. Not so.

Partner Actions: There’s too much going on to manage 2 inventories in real time!!! I was just totally out of handgun ammo and couldn’t pick more up, apparently because Sheva was loaded down with it?? It’s too frantic to be exchanging crap like that.

Partner: I want to be Sheva, not Chris! Am I only able to select her as player 2 in co-op, or can I play single player with her, as well??

Other than that, it looks great and I don’t see any of these framerate issues or texture problems that some are mentioning. I smell planted comments from Microsuck…

  • I’m not an xbot, I own both consoles but prefer PS3. It’s obvious the xbox360 version looks far better which pisses me off since I want it for PS3. The controls suck, period, it’s 2009 Capcom, were are the customizeble controls? Also nearly 3 years in devoplment and all us PS3 owners get is some crappy port job?! Seriously this demo has killed any notion of a purchase. Why release such a bug ridden demo?!

  • @ bandit29

You can switch weapons and health using the D-Pad. Very helpful, but you still have to enter the inventory menu to exchange stuff…

  • Love the Demo but this buggy 2.60 firmware is a real pain in my side. My audio keeps skipping randomly in eveything (except direct music/movies off my external HDD) my games (disc or download) and Blu-rays have audio skipping issues after the update, also the audio leveler seems off, my music is too loud but other things like movies seem too low. This started right after the 2.60 update, come on Sony help me out, at least acknowledge the problem(s) and let me know a patch it coming.

  • downloading rite now big fan of the original re

  • this is bullcrap i want to play re5, but no iam banned, now i got to play it on the 360, sony u just lost another fan, u banned people left and right, iam sick of it, iam selling my ps3, cause i made one mistake, thats sad…….. goodbye sony fans,

  • I tried to invite my friend to play and it won’t let me. He invited me, but it won’t let me join. Am I doing something wrong?

The controls definitely take some time getting used to.

I think the controls need to be upgraded. I thought since I was a fan of RE since the beginning that the controls would need any changing, but the way the game comes at you you really do a more modern control scheme.
This demo should have been out last year so Capcom would have had come time to change them.
I almost don’t want to play the game.

  • 2 Grenades, 45 Machine Gun bullets, 30 handgun bullets, an explosive barrel, and 4 rifle shots to head and the chainsaw guy finally fell? OMGWTFLAME.

How about we make the game a bit more, oh I don’t know, not retardedly punishing to the player? Just a thought.
