Attention To Details: The Little Things That Help MLB 09 The Show Shine

187 32

Hey everyone, Greg Batalucco (Game Designer) and Clayton Read (Associate Producer) here to bring you the next installment of the MLB 09 The Show blogs. This entry will focus on all the little details added this year to The Show that give it an added touch of realism. For this year’s version we wanted to make the game as accurate as possible and included in MLB 09 The Show are actual team mascots, new and improved stadium jumbotrons with game related movies, K boards, realistic crowds, and improved lighting and skies throughout the stadiums. All these enhancements add to the overall gaming experience to make MLB 09 The Show as real as it gets.

One of the main things we wanted to accomplish this year is to add as much realism to the stadiums and the crowd as possible. We’ve listened to what the community has been telling us: “We want that same experience that we get at a real ballgame, the look and sounds of the crowd, accurate and detailed stadiums, the smell of popcorn and hotdogs, etc.” Well we can’t add in smells (or can we?) but you can imagine. We devoted many, many hours of research to get everything as realistic and accurate in detail as possible in hopes of making it seem like you are actually at the game. We want your friend, spouse or whomever, to walk in the room while you are playing the game and say ,“Hey what game are you watching on TV.” That’s how real it is! In this blog we will go over a few of the things that help to make MLB 09 The Show the most realistic baseball game ever.

Mascots
As both kids and adults we’ve laughed at, and had fun with, team mascots. They always make us feel young and truly enhance the ambiance of a live baseball game. This year in The Show you get to watch as your favorite mascots come to life. Thanks to the brilliant work by The Show’s character artists (and some interesting MOCAP sessions) you can see the Phillie Phanatic get the crowd fired up, Mr. Met dance on top of the dugouts and Bernie Brewer slide down his slide to the amusement of everyone at the game. You can also spot the Swinging Friar cheering by the rally bell, The Bird getting Orioles’ fans out of their seats and Wally the Green Monster leading a “Let’s go, Red Sox” chant. In over 20 stadiums, these mascots will help entertain and make each game more real and enjoyable. So whether it’s razzing the visiting players, having a dance competition with a few lucky (or not so lucky) fans or just trying to score a few laughs, the mascots will undoubtedly be something fun to watch out for in MLB 09 The Show.

Jumbotrons and Videos
For years we have talked about sprucing up our in-game jumbotrons. Yes, we did say sprucing. This year we took it upon ourselves to view every MLB stadium and get a good idea of what each stadium showed. Combing through countless hours of MLB video and artist photos we got a good feel of how we wanted to layout realistic jumbotrons. As you will see, the new jumbotrons throughout the MLB stadiums in The Show will show full statistics, lineups, pitcher matchups and anything you might see at a real MLB game. Another must-have feature that consumers asked for was added this year – game related videos. Go to any real life baseball game and watch your favorite home town pitcher strikeout a batter or favorite slugger hit a home run. Well, what do you see on the jumbotron? A really cool video that rocks out! From homerun and RBI videos, to “get loud” crowd meter and “stand up” videos which pump up the crowd, all these elements of realism go into making MLB 09 The Show true to life.

Crowds
Every development cycle we find little things we’d like to improve on. One thing in particular this year was to get a better and more accurate crowd. What I mean by this is getting fans to actually wear the appropriate clothing, cheer at the right moments with the right level of sound and show up to the ballpark in real to life attendance figures. To do this we watched many hours of MLB games to view the crowds and get an idea of attendance levels for each team versus every other team it could possibly face. For example, a Red Sox/Yankees game should always be packed, and depending on where it is, Fenway Park or Yankee Stadium, there should be a mix of both fans. Now if you’re playing a game down in Florida with the Marlins, well you’re not going to see as many fans and you just might see more fans of the visiting team on certain days or nights. Crowd accuracy was a big thing added this year and we wanted to get as much detail into it as possible.

Another area we wanted to get more accurate was the clothing crowds wore to each game throughout an MLB season and fans leaving during a game. First, in dealing with fans’ clothing, we wanted to make sure they weren’t wearing t-shirts and shorts in April in, Detroit! Each team was charted out by looking at weather forecasts for each city and every month that a baseball teams plays. So now you will see fans in pants and warm jackets at appropriate times of an MLB season. Maybe even a few earmuffs! As well as in San Diego, most fans will be in warm weather attire, but once the sun sets, break out the jackets…burr!! What you might wear at a game for your favorite team is what our crowd will wear.

Secondly, in dealing with crowds leaving early from a game, we have gone through each team, their attendance levels, scores of games, who they are playing at the time and figured out when they would get up and say enough is enough, my team is getting blown out! As you can imagine, there are the die-hards out there and we track it, so no matter what, these fans always stay and support their team. And finally, we have added fans walking up, down and in and out of the aisles throughout each MLB stadium. Fans will also be seen milling around the concession areas and actual vendors are walking around the stadiums. So grab a hot dog and soda, because the little things matter to our team and hopefully you’ll notice these little details as well.

NEW LED and K boards
When you head out to the ballparks these days, you notice that each stadium has a unique look and feel. What we wanted to do is replicate this for our fans by having all the LED boards and K signs that real stadiums have. Fans can view every statistical category imaginable throughout our stadiums with the new LED boards that range from batter and pitcher stats to lineups and pitch count boards. Watch as the boards change and give you updated information for every batter and pitcher. Also, each stadium either has a section where the fans put up K signs or an LED K sign board. These track every K for the home team pitcher so look for this as you rack up the strikeouts. Hopefully you stat junkies out there will love the little added details and accurate statistical displays throughout each and every stadium!

Lighting
When you play baseball, you want to feel like you’re watching a game, not a video game. For MLB09, the lighting methods were rebuilt from ground up to make everything fit together naturally. Employing Global Lighting techniques, we light the stadium using the sky, then turn around and light the players with the sky and stadium. This makes players feel like they belong to the part of the stadium they are standing in front of. Keep an eye on color, reflections and highlights on players as they move through the environment. Also watch the dirt as every step and slide of a long game shows itself, and as chalk lines get disturbed. Day time games vary over your season, from the soft feel of a cloudy sky, to the harsh rays of a clear summer day, and even overcast days if the time and place is right. Night games are now true to life as we capture those long shadows which stretch across the field at the start, stretching farther until finally the sun goes down and the stadium is fully lit by its own lights. How dark it is at the start of the game depends on the day of the year so don’t be surprised if your spring training game is dark at 7pm. All of these little details add together to help immerse you in the game, and bring you back to the core – playing hardball.

Player Accessories
A key theme throughout this development cycle was realism, from stadiums to true-to-life batter stances and pitcher motions. We think we have it nailed. One area we wanted to really focus on this year was the player accessories and beefing it up. We have added eye black, glasses, wrist tape, and batting gloves in the back pockets to name a few. These are some of the player accessories that add to the realistic nature of our game. When you look at your favorite player and you see an arm band or shin guard you will know that we took the time to get that in the game. Focusing on the little things this year and listening to our fans, we have tried to get the details down pat.

Final Thoughts
You may have noticed in this blog I have mentioned realism quite a bit. Well there is a reason for this. The MLB 09 team really wanted to convey the sights and sounds of baseball to you, our fans, in the best possible fashion. So when you are playing with your favorite team or player, check out all these details mentioned here. We know you’ll love it.

We appreciate your feedback and will always listen to our fans as we try to make the best game possible. Thanks for your time and we hope you enjoy MLB 09 The Show and the realism we bring to you. OK, that is the last time I will say realism…oops. Sorry, I said it again.

  • Great job on the improvements! A couple of questions and suggestions:

    1. Will you release a patch that will change the Citi Field walls from blue to whatever Mets fans it is in real life. I’m kind of sick of all the whining.

    2. Will Nationals Park actually have the LED ring on top of the Red Loft this year instead of the generic board?

    3. Has the Camden Yard’s skyline been updated, they have built a new Hilton Hotel that overlooks left field.

    4. Are the benches going to be completely populated with the actual player models, instead of just a handful of high profile players?

    5. For next year it would be cool to have the relief pitchers active in their respective bullpens. Also, please add bat boys and ball girls.

You guys have built a near perfect baseball game, keep up the good work!

  • Big Cub fan here,

One question for you. At Wrigley Field when the other team hits a HR we throw the ball back. Is this going to be on or will you guy’s put it in next year?

Please you guy’s have to put it in if it’s not already in.

  • Hey guys from England!

’08 was the first baseball game I bought and you guys have got me addicted!

    A few questions for you:

. How much new commentary have you added this year? That was one of the best parts of the old game for me.

. Are there more comments for extra inning games or Hit By Pitches?

I have a couple of little suggestions for you guys too:

Next year if you include cutscenes with fans catching (or dropping) the ball, do some with the people round them shouting ‘throw it back’ at an away game.

On fly balls, could you have the AI fielders run towards where they think the ball will end up, then make adjustments while the ball is in the air.

Please include what someone said above and have a TV-style shot of the home run ball after you hit it.

Keep up the good work guys these are the best games ever. The only downside is I may not be able to get the game to the UK on March 3rd!!!

    Cheers guys

  • Thanks for replying so quickly.

I know the demo was an early build but there was a lot of new stuff already in and it did improve the feel.

How much time will you guys get to play the game when it’s finished?

  • game sounds great. is the game in 1080p HD? and will you be able to play at old stadiums like olyimpic stadium, polo grounds and stuff? also are there all the minor league stadiums? thank you for your time please write back and keep up the good work

  • On the question of commentary, I have sort of a complicated question.

Of the available space on a BluRay disc used for the game, how much space will MLB09 use? I ask because I’m curious about the way the addition of commentary works. When you record another X amount of lines of dialogue, do you have to remove ANY of the previous years dialogue? If you don’t, is there a lot of space left?

I ask because I’m curious, if you’re keeping 100% of the dialogue from 08 (maybe 07), and you never have to delete the old ones, by 2012, there could be so many lines of dialogue that you’d almost never hear a repeated comment, which would obviously be fantastic.

So if I need to summarize my question, did you have to delete any commentary from 08 to add the commentary from 09, or do you just keep adding it on to previous years?

  • Can you please eliminate Rex Hudler? I understand he is there to lighten the game up and provide humor. But, just like in real life, you get tired of hearing your friend repeat the same corny jokes and wisecracks after the first few times.

The other two announcers are fine because they provide statistics and relevant information, therefore, it doesn’t get as stale so quickly.

Anyway, Great job on the game. It’s the only one I ever buy.

PS- Arguing balls/strikes and bad calls would be awesome for 2010.

  • Happy to hear that the world series logo is on the field, but is it on the jerseys and hats like REAL life? What is the celebration like after you win?

  • Hey guys. This will be the first arcade-style baseball game I’ve owned since High Heat 2001 (and first console baseball game since Baseball Stars). I’ve really enjoyed the demo and I’m looking forward to getting the game in a couple of weeks.

How does the roster provided with the game handle players who are injured at the start of the season? Using the Blue Jays as an example, Dustin McGowan is expected to miss the first couple of months of the season and Shaun Marcum likely won’t be back until 2010. Will they be in the game at all? If so, will their current injury status be reflected?

  • is there homerun derby for ps3 this time. i still am mad about the last two years no homerun derby on ps3 my nes games when i was young had homerun derby besides that the demos great but if there is no homerun derby this year i will never buy the show again

  • PLEASE FIX THE COUNTING ERRORS! For example: While playing career mode, if you hit over like 100 or 120 homeruns, the HR total starts counting backwards. So when the season is over, you wont be the league leader.. Its been the same for the past 2 versions and if it still isnt fixed on the 2009 version I WILL BOYCOT!

  • IM TELLING YOU GUYS THIS IS GOING TO BE BEST BASEBALL GAME EVER!! REALLY “NOTHING GETS YOU CLOSER!!!”

  • Awesome game! You guys know how to make baseball games, i can’t wait to pick up my copy! I got one question:

Will the Tomahawk chopping cow thats in Turner Field(Atlanta Braves) be on the game? I’d really like to know, because if it is, that would be awesome! Please reply

  • Great job guys. This is shaping up to be one of my favorite games ever.

Two questions I have to ask.

One. Is Stomper (A’s mascot) in the game? I don’t think anyone’s asked yet.

Two. If he is in the game, does he ride out in his car and start breakdancing like in real life? Thats would be AWESOME.

Also, I kind of have a general question with the game. Does the batting clutch stat really matter with a user controlling the batter? I kinda wondered last year.

  • Oh and another thing I noticed from the ’08 game.. I’m guessing that the sign on the monster at Fenway that says “Batta who? Battalucco” has to do with the designer. Am I right? xD

  • Any chance of seeing the Braves crowd starting the Tomahawk Chop at the start of a rally?
    – Go Braves

  • Hey Here’s Some Ideas For Next Years MLB The Show…How About Flashes From Fans Cameras In RTTS-When Your About To Break A Record Or Something…Also How About When You Retire In RTTS That You Can Have The Option Of Becoming A Manager.

  • great game, one question for ya Greg, is the Rally Monkey one of the mascots included? lol

  • PLEASE RESPOND!
I wouldn’t boycott the game, but if HR derby isn’t in this year a good idea would be to make it a free downloadable. I asked about a HR derby add-on last year but it didn’t happen so i’m hoping this year it will.

  • Wait a minute, K…K…K? MOTHER OF GOD! Jokes aside, I have a few questions. Is there a way to use a AA or AAA team in franchise exclusively or is it Major Leagues strictly with some management options for the AA and AAA teams?

Mini games would also be a nice plus and a create your own team would be awesome. Locate the city, build a stadium, find players, management, hire coaches, play games, etc.

  • I like to thank everyone on the SHOW team for making such an amazing game every year. I’ve been playing since MLB The Show 06 I am a DIE HEART FAN. I don’t even watch baseball half as much as I play this game so thanks. I only have Two Major Complaints if its not in then possibly Downladable content or a patch if lucky (THERE WAS NONE LAST YEAR HINT HINT)
1.Will there be Multiple “ROB HOME RUN ANIMATIONS” I swear that its been the same for some years and the ball goes over the fence numerous ways in REAL life so it would only make since to have different leaps and situational animations.
2nd. Will there be a Home Run Derby on PS3 version? I don’t think this is hard to add if you can add a practice mode build, just add celebs in the crowd and a crazy atmosphere presentation with an award ceremony at the end to the same build of practice mode LOL . Also in the franchise during All star weekend! I mean that’s the purpose of trying to hit all those home runs right? That gives me more reason to not simulate my games in a long season. You guys nail the presentation every year & actually have me leaving the controller untouched to watch the what will happen jaw dropping to make me forget this is a video game for a second.

  • In response to XiXVenomXiX: I am with you 100% on that “create-a-team” mode – That would be a solid addition to an already remarkable baseball series.

    – Another year, another show!

  • Will this year’s version have the WBC Tournament??

  • Why don’t the MLB 09 The Show scorebar at the top have the Team Logo’s next to there score? Like the other new baseball game has?

It looks very nice that way.

Please add this to 2010 :)

  • this looks like the greatest game ever.
    by far the most realistic.

this comes out march 3rd right?

  • Please let me know if Fans will catch balls hit into the crowd…This is the only thing missing from the game…PLEASE add fans catching balls and picking them up off the ground and holding the ball up like in real life…Is this in the game? If not PLEASE PLEASE ADD…This would make this game just amazing

  • And one other thing….Did you guys take out the camera angle that shows just the batter when he hits a homrun…To me this is the worst…I want to see the ball fly into the crowd,,,I dont care what the batter is doing…I dont mind if you show the batter then it switches to the ball while in flight…But just to show the batter the whole time is terrible …Please tell me this is gone…Thanks…Awesome job guys

  • UNIT-352, I hate that to, but when i played the demo, it was still there, but when it does just show the ball, it is beautiful! Maybe they will take it out before they release it.

  • First of all, I LOVE this game. It’s always set the bar for realism by getting the little things right to better immerse you in what is slowly getting closer and closer to being just like real baseball.

That being said, I’ve always had one big issue with all baseball games, The Show included… there’s never been a way to change your mind when throwing to a base.

I can’t tell you the number of times when I’ve accidentally thrown to first base instead of second to turn a double play because I wasn’t paying attention to the number of outs or realized too late that I should just go for the sure out at first instead of attempting to throw out the runner at home. Has that been addressed at all this year? If not, can you pleeeease add this to the wish list for next year with a couple of exclamation marks behind it?

    Thanks!

  • The game looks awsome!!!!
i have a quick question i noticed in the video that they mention the players haveing custome styles like eye black, glasses, wristband etc….
Do these accesories include to your players style in road to the show like can we chose eye black adn batting gloves in the back pocket etc…
a reply is greatly appreciated thanks and the games looks great keep up the good work.

  • Will there be all these things for PS2 also?

  • Wow. You Guys have really pushed it.
But I still have some questions. Well, When I was playin’ the game I tried to tag the guy for an out, and guess what the ball went right through him. Will there be more….realistic figures now?

  • Well theres a few lies told during this presentation! One there is no bat boys, and two.No active bullpens and bench coaches. If you see the 2k9 demos they got it right! Don’t get me wrong, mlb the show is the better game! But it’s still those little things that “the show” still missed that piss off the true fans of the game!

  • PLEASE REPLY. i have a few questions.

1.) If i am playing at Wrigley Field and i hit one of the wall is it possible for it to roll in the ivy

2.) Will you be able to see the players in the bullpen warming up when your in the middle of a game

3.) In the dugout can you see all players or just a few.

PLEASE REPLY. Everything is great, keep on improving it!

  • Also, i have one more question. I know that there can be collisions at home plate but is it possible for collisions in the outfield?

  • Hey, I’m a big fan of this game. Does this game have fireworks of any kind in here; because the last two years didn’t have any.

I also have one request, can there be realistic stadium celebrations during homeruns and when the hometeam wins the game. You have several ballparks that do this. For instance, the exploding waterfalls in Anahiem or the two tall smoke stacks in Cincinnati; even the tracks at Houston have pyrotechnics shooting out of it during homeruns and hometeam wins. I think that would crazy if they can provide that. It’s not hard, it just takes some creativity or merely looking at footage of these things occuring during a ball game.

  • Is it too hard to have the maybe 12 ballparks with retractable roofs, to have the user ability to be able to close or open . If in 2009, that area or stadium realism have yet to be taken care of, that what the heck is going on here!!!!!!

  • hey, i love this game and cant wait until i buy it the first day it comes out, but i thought you guys should know that on the demo the PITCHING COACH IS A BLACK GUY WITH WHITE HANDS!!!! idk if my demo just happened to be corrupted or something but i thought id let you guys know..

  • You guys have already talked about bringing a smoother online experience, but please add more time on exhibition mode, say like 2 minutes or something for going extra-innings. 5 minutes can be difficult to manage on very close games. and if you’ve addressed this issue, thanks in advance:)

  • This game looks amazing. Is there a create-a-team function like other sports games? Maybe for 2010?

  • Guys, you are AWESOME!!!

I am without words. You have filled every single item on my presentation wish list and done so with exacting precision. Everything looks spot on. Not only all of that but everything comes together in perfect scale. All the logos are the proper size, all the figures are proper in relation to one another. The stadiums have the feel of scale and distance that you get when you stand in their real life counterparts (for the ones I have been too). This collectively results in the most believable atmosphere of any sports game I have ever played. And the pitch/bat timing tweaks are spot on.

The lighting of this years game is just perfect, just perfect. Certainly, one of the main things I had wished for and y’all came through in your usual way, amazingly!

For every die hard baseball fan like myself, a game created on the level you guys are achieving becomes the stuff of legends in our circles. It heightens our emotions, and with the immersion you guys create, can bring about yelling, jumping, screaming, and tears.

I thank you so very much for your attention to detail and your hard work and dedication to the video game and to the game of baseball.

  • One more thing, these videos are very impressive and very effective. The production quality matches the game’s production quality. The music, the editing, oh my! All of this, the whole thing, the game, the box, the demo, the previews, put on a clinic for all the other sports developers out there. They need look no further for a textbook guide on how it should be done!

  • awww man, oh well, lol, still gonna be an awsome game :D

  • Just want to say great job on this years game it looks awesome, i have been a fan of your mlb series since it debut and it does get better and better each year, so thank you and congrats on making awesome baseball games.

  • @97

    what about doing both?

when i say both i mean the inital hr be the normal behind the player(how its always been) and like in real games do a replay that does follow the ball all the way to the spot it lands.

  • Can you tell me if the player we created in mlb08 RTTS will be able to be transfered to MLB09 RTTS so that we can continue our carrers in the new game ?

  • I’m wondering if MLB 09 will have realistic all star game uniforms – in other words, whether all the players will be wearing their own uniforms during the game, instead of some generic “American League” red colored top.

This is something that NO baseball game has been able to get right in the past 15 years. I don’t know if it’s even possible or has been attempted. However, I have seen basketball and football games where this has been done effectively.

This is something that would add immensely to the realism of the all star game and the fun of playing the mid-season classic during a franchise.

  • Hey guys, I love this game. Each year it keeps getting better and better! I am impressed with the new additions such as the 40-man expanded roster, the lighting effects, the mascots, and the cheers/jeers capability. Those things are awesome! Also, I have bought MLB THe Show every year since 2006 and twice that year: once for the ps2 and once for the ps3. In fact, your game is the sole reason I got a PS3! Here comes the but…actually think of it as constructive criticsm…I am curious to know why the questions about HR Derby and old stadiums have been ignored? Are you guys avoiding the questions for some reason? I understand that there may be licensing issues with the old stadiums but you did have them available for the ps2, and for that matter HR Derby was also in those games? I just don’t understand and would like an explanation please? I mean if it is a matter of time to implement these things, could you put them out as dlc. I’ll wait…shoot I’d even pay extra for these things as dlc. Anyways, thanks for making the greatest and most addicting game in the world. Peace out. Oakland A’s 2009 Champs!

  • This is SO SWEET.

Did you do alot of re-recording audio? I love playing MLB 08, but the audio started to get a little repetitive. Some new play-by-play and color commentary bits would go a long way towards sprucing it up. I mean, you’ve got the whole Blu-Ray disc to fill up! :)

  • hey guys. just curious to know if Southpaw the white sox mascot is included in the game?
