Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

Ok the dude wants feedback on 2.70 not what you want for future updates, stop worry about the features you want and lets focus on the updates and issues at hand, media streamers having issues, and some brainiacs say update your NAS blah blah blah, ATTENTION braniacs, some of these people have done that and the problem still exists THUS the problem is the 2.70 update.
People like my self are experiencing not being able to play DVD Bluray or games as tehir system goes to a black screen and freezes, and things were working up till we updated to 2.70, the issue here is obvious but we get brainiacs who tell us we need to format or restore our stuf and when we do it fixes noting, what you got for that brainiacs, looks like a lot of us have paid 300 to 600 dollars for a Sony WebTV as that is all my ps3 can do is surf the net and chat to my friends who are online and play mp3s and show pictures, if I wanted that I can use my laptop!

Its sounds like your PS3 already had a developing issue, and the 2.70 update simeply triggered the symptoms when accessing certain chip sets. I dought it is the actual cause of the actual failure as we’d all have broken PS3s by now. You should contact customer support.
New avatars okay but please keep this one in the list of US / EU avatars. Its the only thing I beg you guys, oh yeah and more RPG’s and PS2 BC, but that’s now besides the point. I’m very attached to it and it seems I’m like the only one around here using it. Yeah I’m a woman so its obvious I choose a female character and not any female character of course :-)

This is a great addition! I may have to get a chat pad, though. Love the ability to backup the videos to an external device. Now if only the downloadable Demos and Episodes of Qore could also be backed up to an external device.

My PS3 gets black screen sometimes and back, not freeze but if i´m in a middle of a game imagine how happy i´m feeling without watching what i´m doing in my tv for 3 seconds.

well i just have one freeze recently just after putting the update for all the others that read this…DONT PUT THE UPDATE!
Anyone else noticed that some mpeg files that did not play previously now play.
I had at least two MPEG 4 files that I was unable to watch that now work since the update Yeah!
Oh as for txt chat? Seems pointless so cant see me using that. I hate typing on chat pages as as when something cool happens that you want to comment on generally by the time you have typed your ‘witty’ comments themoment has past leaving your comments to look as pointless as well, er, text chat!
I really wish sony would add some really easy simple stuff to make the experiance of using internet sites a little easier such as ability to add bookmarks to the xmb.
This would allow us in the uk to add bbc i-player, five on demand and such like as well as u-tube etc to the xmb so we can just launch straight into them without the need to open the browser first.

They’re still available, and they’re cheap. And what’s with the rants about voice chat? I’d be muting you all. Do you even know what gratitude is? If your system is bricked, call Sony’s support line. If you want certain features, ask in a mature way. Filling a blog with 1800+ complaints isn’t the way to go. Grow up.

i cant wai til you can share videos. i think it would be cool if you could get a flatscreen in ps home to put in your summer house, then you could play vids on the tv for others to see. another thing is the avatars for ps3 should be able to have a real pic of the user instead of these crappy one we have now.
For some reason people have a lot of issues wih FW updates. I think it’s the way they take care of it. Because I, myself, have NEVER and I mean EVER recieved an issue with any update I have ever downloaded. And i’ve had my PS3 since 3/22/08, (1/14/08, but the Blu ray drive died, and I blame myself.) Stop complaining like little immature kids and grow up. ACCEPT things in life, and don’t take the for granted!

I have also never run into a firmware issue, then again there are several models out there. One of the complains on the previous few pages of comments is from someone that has the 160GB model, so its very possible that its only affecting a few models.

Love the “games played together” idea as well!
Please make custom soundtracks a system wide feature or make it mandatory beyond a certain point for all ps3 games. If cross-game VOICE CHAT is ever going to happen, please make it a system wide feature. Don’t leave it up to the developer to implement. If you’re going to leave it up to developers, then don’t even bother.

2.70 trashed streaming of DIVX files over my network from a Linksys NAS200 server. This capability has worked fine for me for the past year that I’ve had the PS3 (and was one of the reasons I bought it.)
This is a HUGE PROBLEM for me as I record TV shows OTA and stream them off of the NAS when I want to watch them. This has KILLED my PVR-like capability of the PS3!!!
Looks like this is not an isolated issue (I found 11 references in this blog alone!). If you have encountered this please speak up so Sony can fix this!

Before this update i could play for example one video i made and now i cant playback the same file.

Firmware 2.70 = great.
The ONLY thing I’m REALLY aggravated about is the RIDICULOUS CENSORING of the chat room. It’s absurd, the chat should be 100% uncensored, yet there’s a billion senseless censors. Cave? Horse? Lul? Bite? That’s just to name a few, it’s CRAZY.
Please, for the love of God, uncensor the chat . . . or at least make the censorship depend upon a parental setting.

In direct response to the v2.70 firmware, I (like many others) am suffering playback issues with streaming, and with certain file formats. Files that were supported prior to the update no longer worked after the update.
AAC files, in particular, say that the data type is unsupported – but for the effort of copying the file to external media, deleting the file from the PS3, and copying the file back, they work again. No changes to the file. This is absurd, and most certainly is something broken in the firmware.
Tech support has asked if I’ve tried to reload the media to the playstation, which is a mind-bogglingly ridiculous expectation of one’s customers, and is simply not going to happen. Tech support has also suggested restoring default settings, which I’ve done to no effect. I have not yet received a response to this, nor any acknowledgment from Sony that this is a firmware issue.
I’d also like to address the mandatory nature of these updates. Any time something tells the system that “a required update is available,” my system develops a serious case of “flunk you” and stubbornly refuses to do most things unless I give it the go-ahead. There is no good reason that such updates cannot background download and offer to install at the user’s convenience.
I also find it dismaying that backwards compatibility has been completely dropped. I’m fortunate to have one of the early models with the emotion engine, but should something happen to my system I no longer even have emulation available as an option. I do not understand this as a design decision – once the emulator is written (and it is) including it on any given system is essentially free.
Even if you want to charge a nominal fee for it as a download, what motivation is there unless you simply want to strong-arm customers into buying last generation’s hardware?
Voice chat in game Hello?
My ps3 streamed divX fine UNTIL I upgraded to 2.7. Sony what are you doing. I don’t use the ps3 for games I olny got it for the streaming. So now I have a black box that is know good until this problem is fixed. and in the mean time my 2 yr old will drive my wife crazy because he can’t watch his shows I did for him.
I have a 60GB PS3 that i bought in September 2007. I have never had an issue with upgrading my PS3 to the latest firmware. This time the 2.70 firmware has caused my games to freeze and makes my PS3 useless. I am extremely disappointed with this and i hope SONY provides a fix 2.71 and admits to bricking a lot of peoples’ PS3s. CMON SONY!
How about linking my saved games to my PSN account so I don’t have to copy the saves on a usb drive whenever I want to go play somewhere else? Then I could just log-in at a friends house and have everything there waiting for me. Talk about convenient…
