PS3 Firmware (v2.70) Update

Eric Lempel's Avatar Posted by

SVP, Marketing & PlayStation Network

Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.

In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:

Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)

  • Sort your friends via their online status
  • Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)

Video delivery service on PlayStation Store

  • Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
  • Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

For a quick preview of Text Chat and some of the other 2.70 features, check out this video:

The 2.70 update will be released soon, and as always, we look forward to reading your feedback.

Nice update! Why can’t you back up other things outside of videos, like games? OR Can you? I’m not sure if you can, never backed anything up.

I’m assuming this isn’t the full list? I would like some updates for the Divx/Xvid list of playing formats, I have a few that don’t play. I’ll try them after the update comes up. :)

Also Cross-Game voice chat would be a great add in for the next one update.

Oh can we also have more ‘freedom’ in filing our files? I hate having a folder full of demos and PSN games. It would be awesome if we could make OUR own folders and name them.

Like have a folder called :

PSN games and another called DEMOS and let me press the triangle and select -Send To–> Demos/PSN Games folder… you get the idea? Just a suggestion, I would really like that.

Jesus Christ in the sky, I cannot believe what I am witnessing right here.

You guys better start reading this blog, since you seem completely out of this world. Let me make a shortcut for you:

– Voice chat inter-game
– PS2 BC
– Price drop
– More video codecs
– Trophy room or some kind of implementation for Home
– Home support for showing videos, photos and playing music at HOME
– 1 minute clip voice messaging at HOME or plain XMB
– Ability to create groups of friends
– Not to charge 16 cents per GB to publishers

That’s what WE want.

BTW, I have to admit that giving us up to 3MB of space for messages it’s cool ^^. Thx guys.

Am i the only one that noticed that when he started the demo of the new update he said “text chat or audio, video chat”. He picked text chat just for the demo. I think in game chat is available but he just didn’t pick it to show off the new update. Watch the video and correct me if i am wrong.

I don’t get why everyone is saying there is no cross game voice chat. Did I miss something? Wasn’t there an option to use your headset to?

For all you people who want In-Game Voice Chat
Your gunna wait a LONG time. Implementing Voice is really hard and takes a long time. At least you got a in game chat. So STFU

That sucks i was looking forward to voice chat. No one wants to be typing while playing a game Sony. Im a little upset about this and this firmare update now seem worthless to me.

Is the Canadian Video Store going to be up any time soon? It has been almost 8 months now and I haven’t heard a single thing for a long while. It is a pointless part of the update for us when we can’t get access to the store.

April 1st, 5:55 pm

Anybody else thinks some of these features people want are not here yet because RAM ISSUES WITH PS3s XMB?

They just got more via disabling something, I forgot what Criterion said but one of the updates actually allowed for them to have more Memory to add 1080i support.

Seriously SONY why text chat? Is it because you want more people to buy your msg adaptor to the Dualshock controller? Did your customers cry out for more text-based chat? Why, oh why, oh why?

We live in 2009, talking is so much easier and it’s the only thing I’ve wanted to do with my friends while playing games since I got the PS3. Why does Cross game chat have so low priority in the FW update schedual? Do an official poll and I can tell you now that backwards compatability and cross game chat will be 1 and 2 on that list. Backwards compatability I know won’t make it (You can just get a Ss2 for that anyway) but what about Cross game chat?????

If it’s not coming to the PS3 or it’s not a possibility then just straight out say it, stop lurking around the bushes.

I’ve bought the offical PS3 headset just to be able to talk to my friends online and I guess that was a mistake since it’s a pain having to go in and out of the chat all the frigging time. I won’t be waiting for FW update 3.0 for it thats for sure. Here’s me hoping SONY hears my cry for justice.

Is this going to fix the mic input volume issues that plague bluetooth headsets? EVEN the ‘OFFICIAL’ headset has this problem.

eudaimo said:

Thanks for the update. I really appreciate that Sony is doing its best to increase the quality of the service.

I don’t want to come across as excessively negative, but I do also consider this update to be a tacit admission that voice chat is not coming ever. The PS3 launched in Q4 2006, and the rumor was that voice chat was missing because no memory had been reserved for it.

Q2 2009 we’re getting text chat, an unrequested stopgap that is useful, but a shrug in the direction of the feature that was actually requested. A year ago, I would have believed that voicechat was coming. Now, the answer seems a bit obvious.

All i have to say is crap. Text chat makes no sense we already could do that with the old message system. And sorting my friends? Forget them. I’m starting to think you guys are wasting update’s.

Voice chat not text chat- Stupid
you guys talk about how powerful the ps3 is but no simple Voice Chat.
I also think you should charge for PSN, because we get no good demos at all.
Make my damn Socom space already. DAMM IT!

Text chat is cool, but it would be better if you could also use an AIM client or other ones. Also where is in-game voice chat? This is probably one of the most requested features since in-game-xmb.

what does it mean when you can now watch movies purchased for the PSP now on the PS3??? Last time I checked there was no video store on the PSP’s PSN store, just games and themes.

Is there any chance that we can get a copy/delete multiple function for the PS1 and PS2 virtual memory cards? It would be nice if I could back up all of my virtual memory card onto a physical one with one click.

Looks great. I agree, it’s nice to see all these free updates adding functionality and features to the PS3!

Any easy way to backup game save files? As of now, I can copy game save files one at a time, but it’s a major hassle. I’d love a “backup all game save files” option or at least the ability to select multiple game saves at a time to copy to my USB drive… :)

Keep up the great work guys!

bunnyhunter said:

a video for voice chat would’ve been great too as it seems some people can’t read or hear when that feature was mentioned.
What are we able to do with that feature exactly?

and when is EyeCreate ever going to get a ‘post to youtube’ ability? The program, and promo video’s encourage user video’s and yet the animations that I have created with LEGO I can’t show to friends because there is no option what-so-ever to. I can understand how Sony may not want to allow videos to be sent in messages, but from EyeCreate to YouTube, should be a possibility at the very least.

Please please please!!! Thank you!

Great job guys , its always nice to see a new firmware being released to the system

Sylvrfonic said:

April 1st, 6:02 pm

This is an excellent update to the system. The ability to backup video to an external drive makes the video service a true contender for my $$ when it comes to video purchases. The service already had immediacy. What it lacked was ownership and convenience (it also takes some of the sting out of extreme!! limitation on the number of times you can d/l video content).

In game text chat?….seriously?! Instead of being useful this just highlights one of PSN’s deficiencies. Instead of talking to my friends while I enjoy the PS3 experience I have to stop playing and navigate the menu. Only then do I get to type my message and wait for my friend to repeat the process on her end. Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate all the work and features we get on the system. Especially one that will be so helpful to the hearing impaired. But, for the rest of us, text is not nearly a substitute for the full voice feature that many of us enjoy on other services.

Eric, comment 64 already said it, and so have I and many others in the past.
Could you fix the battery icon which hovers over the clock. It isn’t something big, but can be annoying, like the blue light on the PlayStation Eye being on while your PS3 was in stand-by (you fixed it in firmware 2.40 eventually I think)

xBerserker said:

I actually have a idea, check it out here –

Right now the friends list is maxed at 100 I think, which is good. But if you do have that many friends. It’s hard to remember who everyone is, what games you play together, etc.

A “Games Played Together” section which will automatically fill in games you have played with that person with the most recent at the front. When you highlight the game icon a small pop-up will show the name of the game. It will show all the games ever played together, so if the list gets longer that the profile box, you’ll need to press the right or left directional button to scroll threw them.

When in that section you press the R1 button to go the next tab, and this will show which games your friend are playing at the moment. This should update automatically as well, say all the games played in the last month. With the most recent game listed first. Same type of layout too.

When will they actually listen to the CONSUMER and add in game chat. Most features being added are useless.

Enigma777 said:

@160,164: Voice chat probably refers to the current voice chat thats available in the PS3… the one that you can’t use in-game and can only talk to 4 people at once…

JKC31 said:

April 1st, 6:03 pm

Did someone already ask this midget if we could use the Voice Chat in-game?

MUGEN02 said:

April 1st, 6:03 pm

Text chat? I think this is a very outdated feature and would like voice chat in-game for around 6 people.

Anyway how will we know if someone posts a new message in the chat room? will their be a pop-up icon showing unread messages or a little box in the corner of the screen showing the incoming messages like PS Home?
