TGIPBD Patapeeps! (or Thank Goodness It’s Patapost Blog Day!)

We’ve got some great news and then we’ve got some other great news. So let’s skip the formalities and jump right in.

First off, I wanted to invite you all to the epic launch party we’ll be having for Patapon 2. Location: your house.

Now you might be asking yourself: how the jebus are we planning to host an epic pata-party at *your* house? Quite simple actually, we’re going to harness the mighty power of a little thing I like to call “the internets” and give you all a chance to download Patapon 2 directly to your PSP.

Now the mighty power of the drum is but a point-and-click away.

Yes, the rumors are true (way to ruin a surprise, ars technica!): Patapon 2 offers fans a new way to get their Pata-on with a digital-only release for your PSP.

For the Patapeeps who want and need a box on their shelves:
No worries, on May 5th, (Cinco de Pata-yo) Patapon 2 voucher cards will ship out to retail stores in the normal PSP packaging along with a printed manual. The voucher will have a code which you can redeem on the PlayStation Network so you can get drumming.

PSP Patapon 2 retail package

For those of you who don’t want to change out of your jammies to go shopping:
On Thursday May 7th, Patapon 2 will go up on the PlayStation Network for your download pleasure.

What about us, the faithful pre-order-ees?
Well, you guys will get what’s coming to ya… via mail, or whatever form of shipping you requested from the online shop you pre-ordered from. If you have any questions, please contact the retailer you pre-ordered from.

Of course there are hundreds of questions you must have about Patapon 2 as a digital only version, how to download, how to install, other Patapon 2 features, etc… and the answers will come to you via this blog, on the same pata-time, in the same pata-channel so stay tuned.

Did someone say epic party? Yes, I did, which leads right into the second great news: Patapon 2 Multiplayer!

So this is how it works….

Chris…sorry dude, you’ve run out of Blogspace…come back next week…like Wednesday-ish. – Jeff

Oh man…looks like I we got Pata-pushed today…

So I guess more details (and maybe a new trailer?) on this great feature on Patapost Wednesday!

See you then!

  • Digital downloads are a good idea, but memory sticks are not big enough and too easily corrupted to have this as the only option.

  • @198 – You are flat out, 100% wrong.

There is nothing valid in what you’re saying.

    DD is rubbish.

There is nothing good about DD.

  • *sighs*

Figures the only way a Pata-post would break 200 comments would be because people were complaining about the digital only part.

Sorry to hear that so many of you will be opting out of purchasing Patapon 2 over something so small as this. Oh well, more Patapon 2 for me! Which brings me to the real reason I wanted to reply…

*chases after Chris with a pitchfork*

Get back here with the multiplayer portion of the post!

  • Well I am glad this information has finally gone public rather than being lied to by customer service.

My Preorder will be CANCELLED tomorrow afternoon, Sorry Sony, I want a UMD not a file on my memory stick that is subject to corruption.

  • So basically Sony should offer Patapon 2 in both UMD and DD to satisfy everyone or so from what I read in the last few hundred comments.

Now, if Sony wanted to “test” DD-only games, I think it would have been better if they shipped it on say, 1gb Memory Stick cards.

  • Too bad Im gonna be missing out on Patapon 2.

  • awwwwwwwwwwwww i wanted a umd and one question suppose one accedintelly deletes it can we just download it again with some sort of purchase voucher?

  • Hey i know you want more money out of the sales but i mean come on but just think people copy it sell it in cheaper they can also put virsus on they’re and you get nothing that’s even worse because they don’t have to spend money on finding umds so you lose so come on GET UMDS INSTEAD!

  • Why isn’t the psn selling the pre order game? couldn’t they just send me the redeem code to my mail and that’s it… if they arent making the digital, the purchases could be digital too, i got my psn card to buy the game and the psn is not selling it yet, i want the demo, i want to pre order with my psn card!!!!

  • @203

This is in *no* way small.

Sony screwing the customer by going digital only is a *HUGE* deal and people should be shouting from the rooftops about this kind of garbage.

You’ll only pry my discs from my cold, dead hands.

  • So how is this great news?
-I been a collector of games, and nothing says value and like a piece of paper! I understand download games, but nitch games like that are for the collectors and diehard gamers, they are truly the ones that want psychical copies and not Digital.
-I know you are trying to test waters for PsPII, But I will not go for a DL only system ever, Just one reason – you pay 40-50 for a game that you may like, but no way of trading it in or selling it incase you don’t like it… No way.

  • Well, that stinks.

  • Hey, Pata-Sony-Pon dudes! Got a suggestion for ya that’s probably too late… For the retail boxed editions, I’d really like to see a spot molded into the case to hold my memory sticks similar to the old PS2 game cases.

  • This is great news for me, I think you guys should do it for all of the new games! Now you need to release some Ps2 classics for the systems, just tweak the controls so they would work well. I’d love some Jak and Daxter!

  • You can redownload games from the PSN an unlimited amount of times, so whats the big fuss about?

And I for one pre ordered the game under the notion that I would be given a game, NOT specifically a UMD.

I hope that DDL becomes standard, the payoff from solid state media has far surpassed disk drives.

  • I just wanted to mention that Sony’s Media Manager is NOT necessarily a viable alternative to internet access like several folks have mentioned earlier. The problem is that the Media Manager is a PC-only application — NO MAC SUPPORT WHATSOEVER. Mac users without internet access have no easy way of accessing the PSN Store and are completely S.O.L. Consumers are NOT going to want to spend an additional $200-$400 for PC emulation software just for the privilege of accessing the PSN store. (And please keep any anti-Mac discrimination to yourselves…)

Any just to reiterate what I mentioned in last week’s “Pata-post Friday”, I too have cancelled my pre-order for PATAPON 2. No UMD = No Sale. I want a physical medium that I can still play for the next 20+ years…

  • Count me in– or out, as the case may be– as a buyer as well. Digital downloads pretty much destroy the concept of ownership. For cheap (say <$5) games on a console it’s one thing and I kind of hold my nose and very occasionally buy from PSN, but for full on games– absolutely no way. There are too many things that can go wrong, there is no collectability/resale value (I don’t buy games just to collect, but I DO appreciate the fact the games I do buy are a physical object), and what happens if Sony decides to stop supporting the PSP DRM? I know, it SOUNDS unlikely, but ask people with large libraries of music from Walmart or Microsoft music how things are going.

A UMD will work as long as you take care of it and have a working PSP 1000/2000/3000 model.. ANY PSP. A digital download won’t keep working forever.

I’ll be importing this from the UK or just going Pon-less. And if the next PSP goes UMD-less, well, I guess my PSP game purchasing days are over.

  • I agree buzzy42 i want a UMD i am just glad i never preoderd it and if i wanted it digital i woulld just buy it from UK right now.

  • but in the end i still want patapon 2 so i am going to buy it but watch out one virus or curruption and i am NEVER buying psp games AGAIN!

  • I had pre-paid for my copy but i canceled it.

I’ll be importing my copy, thanks. DD only for the US? I’ll just go somewhere else to get my UMD.

It’s just another example of Sony treating every user like a criminal.

  • This, is very much disappointing. I’ve been getting along with a 1 gig memory card, obviously haven’t bought anything from the online store, simply not enough room. I was banking on this being a UMD game. I just do not have the money to spend on buying the game ($20 pre-ordered from Game Stop), and a new memory card (apparently $30 for a 4 gig MSPD from Best Buy).

I was really looking forward to this game too, especially after playing the demo. Makes me sad. *frowns*

Also, regarding the demo, aren’t they supposed to be for advertising purposes? If so, what was the point of making the North American demo available only after pre-ordering the game? Seems to defeat the purpose, in my point of view.

Quite disappointing, Sony, for not covering all your bases and at least offering the DD and UMD, to accommodate all your customers. It makes me seriously wonder just what’s going on in there…

  • Well I just got back from the store for my pre-order refund. This is stupid.

    – I share my games with my boyfriend, so now we have to get 2 copies?
    – So if my computer crashes and I lose my data I have to buy the game again?
    – What if I’m done with the game and want to sell it?
    – So all the thousands of people who pre-ordered the game will all be online downloading it May 5th. I doubt your server is prepared.

I don’t see an advantage. You tell us it’s a download without any sort of customer support or questions answered. If it’s that I don’t have to go to a store, well I can can something shipped to my door. In fact I think I will buy it off ebay right now.

    SOOO STUPID.

Sony… you lied to me. You cheated me. I am oh so angry and disappointed.
You went all digital download on this one, without making it painfully clear. This wasn’t advertised clearly, and I hate you for it. I was expecting a physical disk. I got a piece of paper. Why did you even bother to put it in a plastic game case? Why did you choose this great game for your digital distribution? You owe us Sony. I want my Patapon 2 UMD disk. I paid for a Patapon 2 game disk. Sorry Sony, you screwed up. Fix it.
