PSP Firmware (v5.50) Update

319 0

Hi everyone, the next system software update (v5.50) for PSP (PlayStation Portable) will be available soon, and I wanted to provide you all with a preview of some of the key features.

The firmware update will introduce an Information Board on the PSP system’s XMB (XrossMediaBar) interface. Those of you who have a PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) may be familiar with this feature, which displays news and updates from the world of PlayStation in a scrolling ticker in the upper right-hand corner of your TV screen. Now you’ll be able to read up-to-date information about upcoming games, new content available on PlayStation Store, and other news right on your PSP whenever you’re at a wireless Internet hotspot.

In addition, we’ll be adding a few more enhancements with the 5.50 update:

  • Memory Stick improvements – You’ll be able to create and access sub-folders on your Memory Stick PRO Duo for music, videos and photos. Separately, the available space required to download a file from PlayStation Store to your Memory Stick has been reduced significantly.
  • Internet search for games directly from the XMB – You’ll be able to easily search the Internet for information about your PSP games. Select the icon for the game, hit the Triangle button, and then select [Internet Search] from the options menu to get search results based on the game title. This feature was added to PS3 with the recent 2.70 update.
  • Trend Micro trial – PSP’s Internet browser is a great tool for checking out your favorite Web sites on the go, and we’re teaming up with the Internet security experts at Trend Micro to make the Web browsing experience safer and more secure. With the 5.50 update, you’ll have the option to access a free trial of two Trend Micro services:
    1. Trend Micro Web Security uses Web reputation technology to block PSP owners from accidentally visiting a Web site that may contain malicious content designed to steal personal information and confidential data.
Trend Micro Kids’ Safety uses URL filtering technology to prevent children from accessing Web sites that feature inappropriate content.

We look forward to reading your feedback.

  • updated my psp looks like some of the features not working when i got to the information bar and it connects to internet the page displaying says psp not fully updated and cant access trenco

  • Ad-Hoc, whats’ this, never used it before.
Tried to use ,but couldn’t figure out, how to use it. Someone explain.

    Peace Out!

  • Nice about less space required for PS Store downloads – making room for Patapon 2!

  • :O Information Board? Are you serious? That feature is so old and useless. Why does Sony disappoint me all the time? Like we all want features that Sony isn’t even looking into. Not trying to be any kind of fanboy but the xbox 360 implemented everything from day ONE such as in-game music on all xbox titles, in-game voice chat and voice chat messages, etc. Sony just seem to take everything step-by-step and give us teeenyy peeeennyyy updates every 2 months or not even. Europe is still stuck without the PSN cards and they have provided us no information or any details about it arriving in Europe. Sorry but SONY SUCKS! WAKE UP! :(

  • how about a music playlist like on the PS3

  • so when are PSP users going to get to add friends who own a PSP and a PS3? hurry up i want to see what my friends are doing!

  • I dont own an iphone but I think the processor is 620mhz and the psp is 333mhz, seems that the psp should be able to do more than you guys letting us have or maybe you should have put something better in it?

  • I would like to be able to use my 8GB memory card on my psp; why is this still not available

  • finelly a new version for my psp i hope it’s cool

  • this is so freakin aswome i love playstion i want it as soon as possible man this is so cool my friend has a ps3 and the new update is sweet and dat for the psp is cool man please make this reell and not be a teaser and just kidding.

  • cross…game…voice…chat…ps3…please

  • @Xenostar
I agree that the DSi Opera browser is amazing.
Considering the HW I was even more disappointed than usual with Sony’s NetFront based browsers.
Sony definitely needs to offer a custom Opera alternative like Nintendo has done.
If web browsing on the PSP /PS3 were useable it would be awesome!

    CZR

  • sub folders! finally!
how about video streaming to the PSP?
or maybe widgets? (like Yahoo,Vista etc’)
oh yeah and please MORE GAMES!

  • this is what we have been waiting for but what i realy want is freinds on the psp

  • The embed search could be better. When I use it the very first two links are always ads, which is so annoying. Also it doesnt have image search option. I dont use it really, when I need to search for something I just go to google using the browser, much better that way!

  • Sony people, since a while now im not able to browse WAP sites on the PSP, particularly The site of Yahoo (m.yahoo.com) I thought this update would fix that, is there is anything that can be done at it? gracias for the amazing work you put on this and give us such a great times! :)

  • Awsome man, I dont remember any body asking for this, awsome suprise man!

  • You should make things like the “information bar” an optional download. I have it on the PS3 and have it turned off.

Information… isn’t that what we have the browser for? Why not provide better browser support rather than using up valuable OS space on nothing more than bad advertising?

  • The reason they gave it to us now was to remove support for ONE file type of picture(NOT as a package for ACTUAL update), to close a security hole, sony can ban me for saying it if they want.

  • Aww, I was hoping that maybe the new firmware would have the ability to make a music playlist from within the psp, by like adding the option to check or uncheck which songs are to be played during the playlist. maybe next firmware update…

  • I don’t seem to understand the motivations behind Sony’s method of development. The PSP is a mobile device and features as such added or devoloped for the system should be implemented with that thought at the top of the ladder.

If you are allowing customized options on media organazation with nested folders or folders of any kind why in heavens name do you not allow this feature to be used from the PSP itself.

There are a lot of features sitting on my PSP that I can’t even access because it requires the use of either a computer or a Playstation 3. If I am constantly on the road and need the best choice for a mobile device it must have atleast the most basic features available to it. This is why I am considering the switch to the iPod Touch.

If Sony is going to go as far as offering media options on the PSP they should atleast offer features head on. Bad move Sony. The device is a mobile device please allow it to function as one without relying on other electronic equipment.

  • Nice to ear about 5.5 and subfolders. I am in 5,3 and today the access to PSP Network is not working…
So ?? 5,3 or 5.5 when? Y want to see the PSP Network…. what is going on?

  • HERE’S MY QUESTION, ONCE AGAIN!!!
where’s this “create folders” option?? that’s the option I was mostly excited about, next to the subfolder support one… the rest of the “functions” are blah…. CAN ANYBODY PLEASE ANSWER THIS Q. FOR ME???

  • im wondering if sony is going to come out with a new psp with a camera, scence nintendo came out with the “DSI”

  • Why dont we get an update that ACTUALLY MAKES THE OPERATING SYSTEM GOOD.. I Mean the homebrew stuff they have for it lets me know it has the capabilitys, you can’t watch videos you download on it, even in MP4 WHEN IT SAYS its compatible with MP4….you can’t hardly surf the web because even with a HUGE memory card, your cache size is limited….you can’t do ANYTHING good other then put in a UMB and without ANY GOOD NEW GAMES for it that are exclusive to PSP why the heck bother!!!

While im ranting about this, lets update java not just on the PSP but on the friggen PS3 TOOO!!! some of us, actually try to USE those features!!!

  • ok sony plz listen 2 me

first u need 2 unlock more or the ram while on the internet for faster load times ant 2 stop getting the annoying reduced quality message. Also how about some flashplayer 9 for watching vids. online? we’ve seen it done by people with homebrew and we know that the psp has a higher potential than what you are giving us also some more files allowed 2 be played on video because all we have is .mp4. but ur updates are still good but we expect more because random ppl can do more than a worldwide company.last how about listening 2 music while on the internet?we kno tht the PS3 has more power 2 multitask but like i said before…homebrew has showed us higher potential and i kno of a program that lets us multitask

so like i said before plz listen 2 me because i think a lot of people might want this ok.but these r suggestions and since we r consumers i think u should give us the good stuff to keep the PSP head strong.

P.S. thanks 4 the awesome line upthis year for the PSP i thinkthis will be the year of the PSP/PS3 unlike last year

  • the psp team should talk to the ps3 fw team. i mean, i would love to listen to podcasts on my ps3 while i do my homework. its too bad it takes me a half hour to go ahead 15 minutes of a show.

why cants the cell handle more then 1.5x fast forward for audio files, and how about some psp/ps3 rss reader integration?

as per psp related stuff, any chance that there will ever be a connect to the internet button… reason i ask is because at most hotspots you have to type in an email address or a code to get access, meaning, no rss reader to download shows. i have to sit and hope for 30 minutes that the page will load and i can download a podcast that way.

  • The TrendMicro security service is useless bloat. The Information Board is a good idea, but it will probably go the way of the Playstation Underground’s RSS feeds for the PSP. Not very usefull, and will end up never used.
Speaking of RSS, some worthwile updates, support more types of RSS feeds. It seems if it is not Atom, it isn’t supported. MORE RSS SUPPORT! And please update the flash version in the browser. People running homebrew firmware have YouTube support, why don’t people running the native firmware? Come on Sony, they’re beating you on your own hardware! Someone hire these guys.

  • Almost forgot. Support for more file types for video! Come on, MPEG has been around for a long time. The MP4 support could be improved. I have a hell of a time getting the settings “just right” when encoding a video. How about native FLV support too?

  • How about:
    1. Ability to use PSP while it charges though USB port without having to be in some friggin’ Computer Mode
    2. Support for more video codecs, I really don’t want to re-encode everything all the time

  • Sweet Great Update

I just wish the PSP browser could get sereously redone. it really sucks.
    You cant even view youtube

    Come on Sony

  • can you watch youtube videos yet?

  • This is a great update. But when if ever will Playstation Home be available on the PSP? Its a great feature on the PS3. You guys shoiuld really think about adding it to the next PSP update.

  • I just want online play on my psp, and they can leave the improvements right there…

  • Who would’t get the new update for the psp 3000 or 2000 or the 1000

  • Its great but they need to make an upgrade that lets you watch videos on the internet browser that would make A LOT of ppl happy!

  • It would be really nice if the psp got a pdf viewer in the photo category. I know that the psp can handle it and if it were added to the next update the psp would be a serious competitor with the amazon kindle…

  • Also, I must agree with #287. We need some kind of video support to remain competitive with the ipod. I’m jealous that my girlfriend can browse youtube on her i touch and I can’t on my psp.

  • #278 rather

  • why go to v 5.50 from v 5.05?
    yall skipped mad numbers

  • I would like to have my PSP connect it to my PC wireless (no USB), and be able to stream my PC videos. alike PS3.

still waiting for this kind of update!

  • Finally! Subfolders! Ha! Heck Yes!

  • I hope the psp creaters (Sony) can create a big update maybe one that costs money in order to watch youtube videos or other video sites. That would sure make the psp a lot more cooler. I want it to beat apple and the itouch. :D

  • great update
    Sweet subfolders
dont need the psp info thing

    need better internet browser
Hey it would be awesome to have trophies
it would also be cool if you could update Skype so we can can instant message and if we are doing something else we can still be in skype
it would also be cool to have some kind of a text reader
and a gps sounds awesome not needed though

  • this is an ok update, thanks anyway sony but i would like to be able to contact my friends from my ps3 on 2 the psp, that my friends at sony would be the ticket to the show. give as much as you can sony, we appreciate every little bit.

  • Sounds like a good update to me, lets do it!

  • “You’ll be able to easily search the Internet for information about your PSP games. Select the icon for the game, hit the Triangle button”

Great except for the fact theat everytime I quit an app I have to log in to the wi-fi internet connections like 40 billion times every time I quit an application.

    goes something like this.

connect to psn store,,,,, log into wi-fi routers,,,,

set time log in to wi-fi router again.

search internet log back in to wi-fi router.

open web browser …Guess what I got to log back in into the wi-fi aceess point YET again! wow .

Skype…Oh wait Guess whatI have to do it agin Because I quit an app and it closed ai-fi network connection again.

I waste more time on that damn log in screen than I do using the psp.

for god sakes just get an option to connect to a Wi-fi hot spot 1 time and never have to again until you say to turn it off.

the ps3 I do not have to log back in to the wi-fi network 999999 times in a day when i am using the web apps

by now I am starting to get really annoyed with having to reconnect to the internet all the time on the psp every time i change an app.

  • the support folder will be a great addition. its about time.
