Earlier this week you heard Naughty Dog game designer Justin Richmond talk Uncharted 2: Among Thieves multiplayer. This time, you get Lead Game Designer Neil Druckmann. Armed with a heap of your burning questions, I cornered Neil for a juicy 10 minutes of everything from co-op to DLC in Uncharted 2. Hope you enjoy!

    Very plausible.

However, it’s resulting in lost sales for them, so I guess it’s up to them whether they want to give consumers the full game or screw them over.

  • Uncharted to me personally is one of the greatest games ever made, it’s just brilliant in too many ways to mention, but I will say that I have absolutely no doubts as to ND’s ability to create another masterpiece with Among Thieves!!! :D

  • It doesn’t sound like the single player is going to be very long. :(

  • this is my most anticipated game of the year!

  • i want this flocking game now!!

That’s because they gimped the single player in favour of the pointless online modes.

  • This will definitely be nominated for game of year. First one was outstanding with gameplay and graphics.

  • hopefully the multiplayer won’t feel tacked on.

  • as a gamer i prefer the choice of use custom
    sound track
i mite not want to hear the same sound track
    2nd or 3rd time
    after finishing the game

  • Kick ass interview. Can not wait for this game man. IGN said the multiplayer ‘doesnt feel like uncharted’, I want to play it and see for myself. The pacing is obviously different but as long as the climbing aspect is in there, I think it will be awesome.

  • When you say Co-op, you mean local too, right?

  • Very good interview in-gauging questions and strong responses.

    Too late.

It’s been tacked on from the beginning.

  • ^ Yes, I quite agree.

  • Nice, I like what I’m hearing so far. As for the custom soundtrack, I agree and don’t agree with him. I agree that custom soundtrack is not needed in the story mode, but it should be an option in online multiplayer mode(like Killzone 2).

  • Game of the Year ’09, hands down. The Uncharted series has justified the price of the PS3 by itself.

  • out of all questions nobody ask would there be more PUZZLES in Uncharted 2……. it seem like Uncharted went from Action/Adventure to Adventure/Shooter….

in game costume soundtrack(OVERRATED) do y’all want it just because 360 can do it….. man its 2009 did muting or turning down the TV and turning on the STREO suddenly DISAPPEARED. it works the same exact way.

  • Fans were clamoring for multiplayer? I only remember a small handful of people complaining about it.

  • wow Chris you guys have been superb this week , Jeff and you , thanks for asking all our questions , the fans questions, very kool of you guys , lots of info on games that im highly anticipating like inFAMOUS, White Knight Chronicles and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves but i wanted to ask you if we are gonna get info on M.A.G. and Motorstorm Arctic Edge anytime soon ???

  • Nice interview. I really liked the discussion of the game’s music. Also, I hope to see more of those bonus featurettes, including but not limited to the one about the composer in Uncharted 1. :)

  • I am sooo pre-ordering this!
I’ll probably call ebgames next week and pre-order.

  • I’m scarred.

    “we will be supporting DLC”

Why do I get the feeling he means extra modes and a map pack for the fricken competetive multiplayer instead of extra single player or Co-op levels?

You suck Naughty Dog and SCEA. Find another way inprove the value propisition for single player games. Adding a deathmatch mode is lazy and doesn’t even reach your entire audience. You know full well 1/2 the people who buy this game wont even have their PS3 connected to the internet.

  • Heres a good reason to have Custom Soundtracks even though you already have an established soundtrack.

Imagine owning the game and beating it 2 or 3 times, by then you know everything the game has to offer. And maybe you’d like to spice things up a bit and revive the expereince, with your own tunes.

I beleive custom soundtracks can add replay value.

  • Uncharted is the best, can’t wait for this.

  • to the ‘mute music’ and crank up ‘the boombox’ comments:

all my music are mp3 files on my pc. so to accomplish this, i would have to burn cd’s (which last time i checked cost $), buy a boombox (which definitely costs $) just for this one application. seeing as how i have about 20+gigs of music, that’s a lot of burnt cds.

OR… naughty dog could just implement it because they CAN and the people that want to use it, CAN use it and the people that don’t want to use it, DON’T HAVE TO.

seriously, it’s called choice… look it up sometime.

  • Hey I’m worried about my perorder on InFamous. I called gamestop after I ordered InFamous and I asked them “Do I get the Uncharted to beta with InFamous”? And the guy said “IF it becomes availible…That scared me.

  • @21, Neil talked about some things Naughty Dog was doing with the platforming parts! Shoot while you’re on a wall or in the air, free-climbing, the environments, the cinematic sequences, etc. It’s not completely transforming into a shooter. In fact, Naughty Dog is putting more stealth and melee aspects to the combat too.

On topic now, I’m psyched for this game! I love the first Uncharted, and Naughty Dog is going all-out with this one. And apparently Sully’s back! Yay! (I don’t think custom soundtracks would go well with this game though. The music is already going to be geat, and it would be difficult to find more appropriate music. Which reminds me, Uncharted 1’s music was also awesome.)

I will quit my rambling now. Great interview, Chris!

  • @ Dusty Blue: “I don’t think custom soundtracks would go well with this game though. The music is already going to be geat, and it would be difficult to find more appropriate music. Which reminds me, Uncharted 1’s music was also awesome.”

I disagree. Without custom soundtracks implemented, I don’t have a choice in the matter. You seem to misunderstand that if this feature was put into the game, YOU DON’T HAVE TO USE IT. But if the developers don’t code it into the game, i don’t have a CHOICE.

Seriously, go to dictionary.com, look up the word ‘choice’, and then get back to me.

I could choose not to get UC2, but it looks to be a great game that i would 100% buy if they put in this one feature. That’s all i’m saying…

  • I will definitely purchase this game I have no clue if its rated Teen or mature but it sure looks like it will be a sellout can’t wait!..But seriously the first thing SCEA needs to fix is Trophies I can’t stand the Syncing when it doesn’t work in LBP, Uncharted,Burnout Paradise etc!.Hopefully 2.71 or 2.75 fixes this problem that everyone is having for issues with those annoying Trophies no its not my Internet Provider I have cable not Wireless SONY!..

  • somerandomguy112

that last comment about how they were crazy to do all three modes is making me wonder if the release is gonna be pushed back…

  • It’s impossible for Naughty Dog to NOT dissapoint me or others. I’ve loved them since Crash(best game ever) and they’ve been my favorite devolper since.

  • I’d like to know who is the man we see Nate with in some of the pictures and what role does he and Cloe play in this game

  • Neil didnt answered my question :(… I am sad. Well at least Chris asked my question whoopie XD.

  • @128
I agree completly, its supposed to be an option, not a requirement. So if you don’t like it, then don’t enable it.
I don’t think people are thinking long term about this either, I mean sure when I first play the game of coarse I wanna hear the original music! But after the 3rd or 4th time after I’ve already exerienced it, I’d like to try something new. It could bring some of that old excitement back to the expereince. And leave it upto the gamer to decide what fits and what does’nt.
And how hard is it to code into a game anyway? I’m sure by now its a matter of copy and paste.

  • one question…is Uncharted 2 going to be seamless like the 1st Uncharted? (no loading)

  • Please add custom soundtrack at least for multiplayer, and if possible one of the unlockables after finishing the game, I love the soundtrack for the 1st game but most of the game had no music at all.

  • TJ-Max: I don’t think it’s a matter of copy and paste… haha I wish it was that simple. It would take time and probably several thousand bucks to put it in the game but the thing is, since the release date is still a good 3-5 months away, it has time to be put in the game.

I’m hear sounding off because it remains a possibility.

As for whether to have it in multi-player or single player, is it too much to ask for both? Honestly though if I had to choose it would be single player to make the repeated play throughs that much better.

  • @LihimSidhe

I don’t understand, Why would Custom Soundtracks would be that complicated and expensive? All they need to do is add access to the XMB, and the PS3 should do the rest.

  • @TJ-Max: I’m just assuming there is a fair amount of coding involved to make it happen.

Firstly, streaming in music from an outside source would have to compete with the ram that’s open for the game. Now how this can be mitigated by being able to turn off the games ‘native’ music is anyone’s guess. I’m not a programmer so I don’t really know.

Secondly, this isn’t a technical issue but if it really was just a matter of ‘copy and paste’, then why in the WORLD wouldn’t every PS3 developer just include it for the sake of it? A developer could argue against it due to money and time constraints but if it’s just a simple matter of dropping the code in the game but choosing not to do it, that really says a lot about the developers that don’t do it.

I mean I could be wrong on all fronts though. We won’t know until a developer actually comes in here and says something about it though which if they listen to the fans as much as they said they did, you would think we would have seen a response by now aside from such a trite answer of, “Why would you want custom soundtracks?”

  • Were vehicles just confirmed for multiplayer?o_O

  • I really enjoyed the first “Uncharted”,but when you add a multiplayer and co-op component it just makes the game so much better.”Uncharted 2″ is an ultimate buy for me right exactly when it comes out,Sony did an amazing job with this one.

  • This how I feel about custom soundtracks. On Story mode, custom soundracks should not be a option. After playing the first Uncharted, I couldn’t see myself playing a custom soundtrack during game. Even after beating it three times. The soundtrack theme was perfect for the game, especially when you are approaching danger (gun fights). If custom soundtracks were played, it most likely play though the whole game. It won’t start and stop in certain events in the game, and that was the main reason I loved the original soundtrack. Gameplay won’t be same with custom soundtracks.

As for online mutliplayer, custom soundtracks should be an option. Like most action packed shooters, there is no music in online play, and sometimes players needs something to pump them up. Custom soundtracks can give them a little boost adrenaline to be ready for gun fights. Plus, it’s accessible for people that have a PS3 as THEIR ONLY MUSIC PLAYER NEARBY (don’t act like you don’t why I capitalize words). That’s how I feel about it. You can love it or hate it. Doesn’t matter to me.

  • I’m happy to see co-op for Uncharted 2! I thought that was one thing the first game needed badly.
Although, they better have full 2 player story co-op and not just a co-op mode like Resitance 2 did.

  • What is this game gonna be rated?
