Hello everyone,
This is Nao from NIS America, Inc. Today, I’d like to share some exciting news about “Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman!” for PSP with all of you.
NIS America has decided to release Badman exclusively on the PlayStation Network on July 16, 2009. The reason we’re going this direction is because the demo version of Badman on PSN was so surprisingly well received, and we thought Badman would be the perfect title to test the waters of this download-only release opportunity on PSN. Badman is a relatively small title in terms of download size, and with a PSN release we can provide this title to our fans for only $19.99. We hope that you all are happy with this decision :-)
After the launch of the Badman demo, I noticed that some people were a little confused and struggled with the gameplay. Badman has very simple rules, but it is still very challenging. The first couple of stages will be easy to beat, but it gets tougher as you go forward. So, NIS America has created a strategy sharing forum. You can download a dungeon designer program, and then create your perfect dungeon! (To download the dungeon designer program, simply click on “CREATE A DUNGEON MAP” on the right-hand side of the forum page.)
There are some strategies up already, so please visit the dungeon forum if you need some help from fellow Badman fans! Here is one dungeon I created just for fun. It doesn’t help with the strategy, but I just wanted to show how you can make your own dungeon!
When you create the dungeon map, you can export it to a JPG file and save it to your computer. Then e-mail it to badman@nisamerica.com or simply click “SUBMIT A DUNGEON MAP” on the right-hand side of the forum page. Don’t forget to share your strategies and tips!
I hope you guys can connect and help each other kick those heroes’ butts!! :-p
We’ve also come up with some gameplay footage clips, which can be found on the official Badman website. There is only 1 gameplay clip available so far, but more are on their way!
Here is the first stage clip…
Lastly, the cool people over at PluggnPlay.com are holding a contest for Badman. And they have a pretty nice prize, so I hope you guys can check them out and enter the contest to earn an awesome prize!
These are OMNOM figures, and just one example of the prizes they are offering. These are made from Pixel Blocks. So cute, right?
I hope you all have fun with the contest!
Thank you for reading my post! I’d really love to reply to all of you. But realistically, I cannot do that. But I will try to reply as much as I can, and as soon as I can! So, please don’t get mad/frustrated/filled with hate if I don’t reply right away… :)
Have a great day!
Best regards,
Nao Zook
Congratulations – you’ve lost a sale here.
No physical media = no sale.
Keep the digital distribution coming. You have some major ignorance going on in regards to how the system works. Some of the comments are from people who want blu ray copies of small psn releases everytime one is announced..lol
Their not really interested in the game,just making absurd comments. Sorry,but I don’t care about having a ton of cases on a shelf so I can show off on a thread on Neogaf or something.
Keep the digital copies coming..Down with UMD.
Still looking for Cross Edge here. Most stores received only one or two copies since launch and the majority of them were taken by someone working at the store. It’s almost as if the game wasn’t released!
@146 and 147
And the insults just keep on coming from the pro DD crowd, as always.
DD is bad for consumers.
@Triple Lei
There is no freedom with DD – your freedom is being taken away.
@139 You are 100% WRONG.
As a consumer, you have ZERO rights with DD. You don’t own it, if your HD goes on the fritz and you want to replace it, you have to pay AGAIN, and it is GUARANTEED to disappear from servers after a certain amount of time.
There is NO freedom with DD.
@146 Wow – more insults from the pro DD crowd who have no facts to back up their argument. What a surprise.
@149..No psn id?? hiding behind a fake log in here hmmm Sorry,but I am a consumer. 30 psn games,15psp,25 PS3 titles,etc. It’s one thing to make a sound arguement,it’s another to troll everytime a post is make about a digital title.
Your probably the same guy as Pooka who does the same thing in every one of these.Gladly Sony isn’t stuck in the past and they continue to look to the future.
Digital titles are tied to your PSN id and it isn’t going anywhere. You can buy some empty UMD cases from Gamestop if it will make your shelf look better though.
I am confused. I think a lot of people think that the ownership between physical copies and digital copies are significantly different, when in fact they are quite similar.
In both cases, a consumer does not “own” the software, they merely license it for use. Next time you buy a physical copy, look it up. (In fact, some parts of the EULA could actually be used in the argument that second hand selling is a breach of contract.)
It would seem to suggest that any rights and freedom that supports of UMD believe they have, don’t really exist, at least legally, so the only difference between UMD and DD is the form in which our games take.
I respect those who have simply stated that they want a UMD and that Sony did say that UMD will continue to be supported, but those who have just been saying that UMD is better in every way? Well, you need to get your facts straight and really look at what it is you’re against digital distributon for.
Saying that owning digital content is the same as owning a physical copy is like saying that typing *hugs* on IM is the same thing as actually hugging someone.
As I see this, it was poor decision to make this (or any other) game download only. You are alienating a part of your base for no good reason. Make the physical copy slightly more pricey if need be. A lot of people wouldn’t mind paying a few extra bucks for ACTUAL value… Think of it as “collector’s edition”.
This was the best Demo i ever played. I can’t wait for the full game, because me, my friend and my other friend have played it a total of 25 times. HURRY!
@158
Don’t continue to spout that pro-corporate jargon.
If I’m leasing the content, why am I paying full price for it?
Disc is ownership, and that’s what publishers want to kill.
The very sad problem with DD only is that you will never find those titles in a big bin at Walmart at very low price. Sony will always control the price and never sell low.
What about paying for size, and not content? Of course, there would have to be sysems in place so they don’t fill with empty command lines.
@82
I have stupid download speeds at home, and am certainly not going to go sit in a coffee shop for 2 hours waiting for something to download, thanks.
Also, you never do own it. If yo have to delete it off your memory card for some reason, and 5 years down the line sony cuts the PSN servers to one reason or another, will you be able to download it again? Probably not.
And also 82, the only game i have ever bought second hand is SoTC. So whatever
Triple lei
Sorry you fail, as far as i know you can’t back up PSN games
@165
I’m on your side, dude. But on this particular facet of the subject, you are wrong. You can make infinity back up copies of anything that can be gotten inside a PSP. Just connect it to the PC via USB and copy away…
almighty-slayer:
“Sorry you fail, as far as i know you can’t back up PSN games”
More ignorance from the chest-pounding “no UMD, no buy” crowd.
If you ever actually TRIED downloading, you’d know they’d appear on your memory stick as a folder in your PSP\GAME folder with a similarly named file appearing in a new PSP\LICENSE folder. You copy those folders to your hard drive. Burn those folders to a CD, or DVD, as many times as you want, and you’re golden. The Media Go application makes this even easier.
On the other hand, your UMD gets lost or stolen? Have fun hunting down a good condition copy on eBay, and getting ripped off in the process.
Other than Japan, are any other regions getting a UMD release as was done for Patapon 2?
Yes, I would rather go to the trouble of waiting until I can import a UMD with the english version of the game than settle for digital. If that doesn’t happen perhaps the JP edition wouldn’t be too hard to figure out. I like actual media because I want to be certain I can still play the game in 20 years. I still play my 2600 games despite it being unsupported by its manufacturer for quite some time. When the PSP is long dead at retail I still want to play my games. I don’t trust any company to make that sort of a commitment to provide digital content in case my memory stick goes kerblooey.

Even more ignorance from the chest-pounding “no UMD, no buy” crowd.
Worst case scenario: the PSN servers are no more, or Sony merges to form MicroSoNyntendo.
Remember that PSP you activated online with your account back in 2009? It would STILL be activated, so you’d be STILL be able to play your games. You know, all those downloaded games that were so ridiculously easy to back up? And why would you even worry about any memory stick going “kerblooey?” 20 years later, you could probably buy new 32 GB memory sticks like candy.
Another benefit to DD games: No more scratched/cracked disks…
As far as things go, Trioptical is right on the money. It doesn’t apply only to video games though. Owning a physical copy for pretty much everything (games, movies, music, software) means that you are just paying a license fee to use it. The ownership of the content remains in the hands of the creator(s)/company…

“Even more ignorance from the chest-pounding “no UMD, no buy” crowd.”
Memory sticks could be lost easily. I’m not sure how reliable a storage method they would be long term. I’m also not sure if DD titles have any sort of encryption to prevent data from being copied to another method of storage.
I would just like the option of being able to purchase an actual UMD. If it was offered for, say, $30 or $40 and only available directly from the publisher to offset the higher cost to produce it I’d be happy. It’s great that you have faith in Sony providing support for its products long-term but not all of us share that faith.
While physical media can be damaged it’s usually more due to carelessness. I’ve had only two games in over one-thousand accidentally destroyed in fifteen years. Also, rights to actual media are hard to revoke… one can lose games easily to a banned account but an Aquanaut’s Holiday PS disc will still play fine even after thirteen years.
Do not see it as ignorance but as a preference. You’re fine with downloads and that’s wonderful. I would just rather have a boxed disc to clutter up a shelf with.
Currently playing Cross Edge, and i’m actually enjoying it quitte a bit.
1) Is Namco looking to secure a release for Tales of Vesperia in North America?
2)… Katamari Forever/ tribute?
So many people here angry about this game going DD. Personally, I’m all for it. It means more money going to the smaller developers and publishers, instead of the money going to retail, packaging, distributors, etc. I wish you would have told us exactly how big this game is, though. I imagine it being incredibly small due to the nature of the game’s assets.
Hello all,
I was trying to reply to your comments yesterday, but I just couldn’t keep up with you all!
There is a heated discussion about whether download-only was a good move or not. I really appreciate everyone’s opinion.
I wish we could satisfy all of our fans/ prospective Badman lovers/everyone else. However, we realized that it is simply not physically or financially possible. We wish that we could release Badman in both forms: download and UMD. But we had to choose one or the other. If we were to release UMD only, most major game retailer would stock few/no copies of Badman. So rather than making Badman an “impossible-to-find” game, we decided to go with download-only to give everyone easy access to it. Because Badman is actually a great game for PSP, we didn’t want to waste this fun, addictive, unique, and great game just because we wanted to have physical media.
I know that some users here mentioned they don’t have access to PSN, or they don’t support download-only, or have other issues. I totally respect your opinion, and I am not here to say you are wrong or anything. I just want both sides to understand each other’s, and our, position. And sometimes you have to just move on with your life. You cannot make everybody agree with your opinion, right?
I also want to mention that we make the same amount of profit if we sell the UMD for $29.99 or the digital download for $19.99. We could charge less, but then we lose money and can’t release future titles. And if we only wanted profit, of course we could charge more for the download version. But it’s not all about profits. We believe that satisfying our customers is the most important thing. And especially because it is downloadable, we wanted to keep it as low as possible for easy access.
The decision has been made, and we cannot change it now. Some of you told me not to just say sorry, but to do something about it. But I really cannot change the direction of this decision. But at least I can emphasize to you and apologize for not being able to satisfy all of your desires.
For those who support NISA’s decision for download-only, THANK YOU! And some of you went out of your way to protect (?) me in your comments. It really meant a lot to me. Thank you very much.
We are not here to take advantage of our fans, consumers, or anyone else. We want to do the best thing for everyone. But sometimes we also have to make tough decisions like this. So I hope you understand.
Thank you very much for reading my post.
PS. Badman is 43mb.
Best regards,
Nao
Well, sometimes its hard for ppl to change. Samr thing happened when music mostly changed from cd’s to downloads.
But for now we are in the middle of a war, between the diskers and downloaders.
But the one thing the diskers refuse to see is the games are coming as downloads, and when more and more ppl get them, the more sony will focus more and more on the downloads. So in the end ether ppl will ether adapt to the change or move on.
And there we have it – why DD is better than UMD, straight from the (VERY beautiful) horse’s mouth!
The only thing I disagreed with was the apology, because Nao wasn’t the one who should be apologizing…
I want to know if Japan got a UMD release and if Europe is getting one.
In reply to afdgsfdgnb, Japan has not just the original on UMD but its sequel as well. Recently the first game was rereleased under Japan’s version of the Greatest Hits line for roughly $30. Europe is supposed to be getting a UMD also but due to the PAL territories being habitually overcharged (VAT doesn’t help) and the poor exchange rate it cost about $50.
If a UMD is made available after sufficient DD sales I would still like one. Until then, however, at least the DD version exists and when I can I will purchase it. It was just disappointing to have the physical release withdrawn completely from the NA region alone. Considering pre-orders from some retailers were also supposed to have a free soundtrack, is there any chance of it being made available online?
Omg that game is the worst crappy original idea I have ever seen lmao!! Who did you hire to make that game SCEA a 7 year old kid?
Seriously Xbot has better ideas then you guys come up with! This game I played the demo and thought Wth is this junk! Seriously use your brain and stop giving us PSN users crapware!..have you ever thought perhaps a Tetris like game perhaps? Or some oldschool games like ChopLifter, Cause I did like GunStar Heros classic all the way and its Under Vintage software add more cool ideas like that and you’ll be fine but lose the badman its so stupid!! Seriously!!..
Thanks, Nao, for that surprisingly candid response.
While a UMD release isn’t possible now, perhaps to calm some of the people here, is there a chance that a UMD might be released after October 1st? What sort of factors would effect such a decision?
Hello Trioptical,
Thank you.
We really regret that we couldn\’t release UMD version of Badman, so we are definitely trying to find a way to do it in the future.
I am not sure when we can do this, or if we can do this. But we would love to release a UMD whenever we can because we know that our hardcore fans love to collect and own physical discs.
And our hardcore fans have been supporting NISA for a long time, so we really want to make them happy every time we release a new title.
So hopefully in the end, everybody will be happy:-)
Thank you.
