Fallout 3 Downloadable Content on PSN

Hello PlayStation fans. I’m Ashley Cheng, a producer at Bethesda Game Studios, here to give everyone an update on when Fallout 3 DLC will be available via PlayStation Network.

Fallout 3 Anchorage PS3

We’re excited and eager to bring Fallout 3 DLC to PSN. Unfortunately, the content is going to be releasing later than originally expected. Our DLC expands on the original game tremendously — each DLC offering 4-6 hours of additional content — and is no trivial undertaking. Here’s a brief look at the DLC you’ll be able to play.

  • Operation: Anchorage (pictured above) – Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe – the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders.
  • The Pitt (pictured below) – Journey to the industrial raider town called The Pitt, located in the remains of Pittsburgh and choose sides in the battle between the slaves and the slavers.
  • Broken Steel (pictured below) – Join the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel and rid the Capital Wasteland of the Enclave remnants once and for all. Continues the adventure past the main quest and raises the game’s level cap to 30.
  • Point Lookout – Explore a massive new swampland area filled with new quests and content.
  • Mothership Zeta – The aliens have returned, and they’re pissed. Experience an alien abduction first hand and find out if you’re tough enough to survive.

Fallout 3 Broken Steel PS3 Fallout 3 - Pitt PS3

What can you expect from our DLC?

  • More Fallout 3 Goodness – More weapons, more creatures, more armor and outfits, more characters to interact with, and more loot. You’ll find all of these within the unique new locations of Broken Steel, Operation: Anchorage, The Pitt, Point Lookout, and Mothership Zeta.
  • DLC Trophies – Did I mention we’re supporting trophies in each DLC? This was a big priority for us and one of the reasons for the extra time needed. In the end, we think it’s worth the effort to bring trophies to the DLC.
  • Support for existing characters and saves – Once you’ve downloaded and installed the DLC, the content is accessible at anytime (once you leave Vault 101). You can play the DLC whenever you want — with one exception (see Broken Steel below).

So when can you expect Fallout 3 DLC? We are knee deep in testing at the moment, and we’re hoping to have the first DLC out by the end of September. That long? Keep in mind that not only do we need to test each DLC on PS3, we also need to test each DLC when used in conjunction with each of the other DLC, as well as all of them together, along with the entire original game.

I do have good news! We have decided that Broken Steel will be the first release since it is easily the most requested DLC from our fans. Broken Steel allows you to continue playing the game after completing the Main Quest, raises the level cap to 30, and includes 4-6 hours of additional gameplay. It is also the one DLC that requires you to finish the Main Quest from the game to play the new content. Regardless of whether you’ve completed the Main Quest, the level cap will already be raised and higher level characters will begin encountering some of the new enemies in the Capital Wasteland. For the release of Broken Steel and the other DLCs, we’ll release a new update for the game.

After Broken Steel, we’ll be releasing Operation: Anchorage and The Pitt shortly thereafter, probably at the same time – just to get them out to you as soon as we can. After that we’ll have Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta available as soon as we can, so that the wait between DLC is as short as possible. Once we release Broken Steel, we’ll have a better idea when the other DLC will be coming and will let you know specifics.

We hope you enjoy Fallout 3’s DLC. Thank you for your patience. They’ll be here before you know it.

  • As for the person complaining about Broken Steel coming out first, a lot of us reached the lvl 20 level cap long ago. Why would I have picked up The Pitt or OA, if I can’t level up while playing them? My plan, anyway, was to wait until Broken Steel came out, and then get the other two. This works out.

Oh, and for people saying trophies are mandatory, you forget they are not mandatory for DLC. Otherwise, the Valkyria Chronicles DLC would’ve added them to that game.

  • @346 clupula668
People said that they were not going to pay full price if the game did not support trophies and have an addition extra worth wild. ToV on the other hand has tons of extra including new characters including full voice over for all the dialogs, and a more flush out story. ES fail on the PS3 because it came out during the Holiday season when VC hits which was a far superior game.

  • @Ice_Snake
Sorry to burst your bubble but a large portion of the profits will still go to Bethesda, so you’ll still involuntarily fund those ‘Nazis’.

    @Robotinator
C’mon, nothing NIS has ever made has come close to the scale of Bethesda’s games. It’s easy to deliver when your biggest franchises have 2D sprites with craptastic 2D/3D environments. (I love NIS but it’s true)

I can’t believe people are bashing Bethesda about this. The DLC was released on the 360 first, so what?! And now you guys feel entitled to a discount/extra content. I don’t know how the 360 community would feel about that. They paid full price and had the same amount of content. Hypocritical asses.

  • @351 Grind_Axis
Do you even read the comments? People are upset because they were lied to about the DLC not coming the PS3.
As an xbox 360 owners, I do not know. We tend to get all the exclusive DLC, whether it is timed or not.
Second the paid full price because they did not have to wait 9+ months for the same DLC.

  • Wow that is amazing, has anyone not noticed that september was when broken steel was supposed to come out anyways!!!! The first was june, then the next in 4-6 weeks followed by the same in 4-6 weeks. So that would put BS in september. They havnt given us any update… Remember late june.. now late september. Thats not a release date. Thats just a way of giving us the same crap info in a new form… And I hope you all arent thinking the GOTY version will be comming out in october.. If they are really having these problems, how the hell are they supposed to have it all done in time for the GOTY. Id bet money the GOTY gets delayed for the PS3..Lame excuses from the devs. Way to screw us all over! ID LOVE TO SEE A FALLOUT 3 BOYCOTT LIKE THE LEFT FOR DEAD 2 BOYCOTT!!

  • I don’t see why folk are taking this as a bad thing. With the extra couple of months, they can have much more time to test the packs and work out the bugs that were present in the other versions (and any new ones that might have cropped up in the port). And besides, it’s only two months away. =p Surely we can wait that long.

  • Thank you bethesda, for some information. I understand, how much work you have. I wanted to ask : is there any possibility to get DLC sooner than late september???

  • Gamestop has an october release date for the PS3 GOTY edition.. so since the delay till september, im sure you are going to be pushing the PS3 version back till around december right???

  • Many have sold the game…why would they keep it? to light it a candle?

You said NO DLC WAS COMING TO PS3, so people had no reason to keep the game…and you expect people to get the game again to play some extra hours???

You say PS3 don’t buy DLC but the fact is, that most of base installment of the PS3 is adults that payed the PS3 with their own money so it’s not a community you can milk in the same way or treat as kids and making the DLC sounds as if you doing us a favour

A favour would be to bundle it and release one for free at least, so those loyal to you on the PS3 will have something to look forward to.

  • wait,wait……stop!!!!!!!!!

  • I look forward to this, but I must say that I have been EXTREMELY fed up with MS buying out the best in the business. Come on, Bethesda, there are plenty of die hard fans that own PS3’s out there. Show us some love, and take a stand against greedy third rate corporations like MS!! This DLC should have been out the SAME TIME as the other platforms. For shame.

  • All I can say is “Better late than never”.

I have been holding on to the game for months already after I’ve finished it just for all of the DLC. I can’t wait to be able to fire it back up again….guess I have a couple more months.

  • Thank you so much for doing the work to get these on the ps3, you have surely made my day. I wait eager for Broken steel and Point lookout.

    F U Bethesda

  • Wow, this blog post was as popular as the holocaust.

  • why bother releasing it now do you guys know how many better games are comeing out this fall. You guys at bethesda obviously dont want our buisness. i would rather buy a new ip that gets terrible reviews rather than a port.

  • The delay is understandable. In this case, I’m happy that the DLC is being released for the PS3 and do not mind the delay. Also, releasing Broken Steel first is a very smart decision. Due to the spacing release of each DLC, Broken Steel should have always been the first to be released.

All the best to the team who are working on this content.

  • Funny how Ashley isn’t commenting anymore since everyone is p*ssed. Thank god Interplay is deveolping Fallout: New Vegas. I don’t want to wait 6 god damn months for it to come out after it comes out for 360.

Also, honestly, Bethesda, you might as well just make your games 360 exclusive. You neglect your PS fans, you give us great games full of so many f***ing bugs, you can’t even keep a solid release date for your games, yet 360 was just fine with them. Also because of Bethesda’s fetish for MS money, we won’t get GOTY at the same time as 360 does.

MS probabley paid for GOTY to come first. Bethesda is probabley just lieing about “testing” the DLC. Sure did a hell of a lot testing for when the game came out right?

  • This is really disappointing, its pretty obvious your company doesn’t care about the Playstation community.

  • only reason ill buy it for the PS3 is because for some reason the DLC doesn’t work on my PC……..and because for some reason i’m obsessed with vault boy (re bought the DLC disc for my PC just for the vault boy poster, and bought the collectors edition on the PS3 just to get the bobblehead)…just couldn’t have fallout without vault boy

  • I don’t understand the people saying that those who are unhappy are acting like children. Just because you don’t mind being metaphorically bent over and taken advantage of, doesn’t mean we have to.

And to the guy that sympathizes with Bethesda since he’s a 30 year old programmer and knows how tough it is to test games: none of us that have typed up reasonable responses are disagreeing with that. In fact, we appreciate when developer’s take their time to craft a good PS3 game…

  • …Yes, games are hard to develop/test, but that is something they should have been factoring in and working on while pretending the DLC was 360 exclusive. They managed to release 360’s DLC on schedule, it is not too much to ask that they do the same with the PS3’s.

Honestly, what is their excuse that this is happening to PS3 owners? Trophies? Should have been part of the gameplan seeing as they are mandatory. Testing? Should have been done alongside the 360 version (just “delayed” so they could bank Microsoft’s cheque that made the DLC timed exclusive(s)).

  • So, no. Don’t tell us we are being immature. If this type of customer service was happening anywhere else you’d have just as many displeased customers. And no, don’t give Bethesda your hard earned money saying “it’s ok, I don’t mind waiting, keep up the great work, love you guys” because they’ll just continue to treat other gamers before you, and expect you to take it (or love them for it…).

As a side note: no, it may not be ok to handle it as some have (swearing and writing all in caps etc.) but as a customer, or potential customer, each and everyone of us should be willing and able to demand better customer service after being deliberately lied to and ignored over the past few months – despite being expected to pay the same as those who are treated first.

  • @350
It does not matter why people didn’t buy it to Namco. When a company looks at their sales, all that’s on the chart is the numbers. It doesn’t matter that Valkyria Chronicles was a better game than Eternal Sonata (which it was). It matters that the PS3 port didn’t sell as much as the 360 version. Period. Square-Enix has already used the sales drop off between PS3 to 360 ports as the reason they’re not giving us The Last Remnant. Namco might very well do the same.

The Fallout 3 DLC doesn’t sell, it doesn’t matter why, it’ll just translate to “We will make more money with 360 exclusivity versus staying multiplatform.” None of the complaints made here will matter at all. It’ll just be raw sales. Now, if they sell well, you will definitely see the next round of DLC release at the same time. Reason being, they will see they can make an equal or greater profit on PS3. All the emotional responses and name calling will mean nothing.

  • I still havm’t got da cash 2 get this game yet. i rented it & loved it.but if the dlc is an outragious price then i will jus buy the GOTY edition.

Of couse like evry1 else evn ho i dont own the game yet i’m still pissd we had 2 wait almost a year aftr 360 2 get the dlc

  • Bethesda, you sorry bunch of developers, I sold my copy of Fallout 3 ages ago due to you telling us that no DLC will be coming to PS3. Now after I sell the game off you decide to just change your mind and give it to us ages after the 360 had it?

You even blatantly lie to us and tell us its STILL in testing just to let 360 owners have temp exclusivity.

Pfft… if I could line up all the developers from Bethesda and just punch you guys in the face one by one, that might get my anger out and I might forgive you.

Then again, I doubt it. You guys know where you can stick this DLC.

    Bethesda = FAIL

  • I think this 360 vs PS3 issue can be summed up like this: the budget and staffing for 360 development must be more practical or maybe even greater than that of Sony. That being said, like clupula668 said, it is all about sale numbers and money. It may well just be a business model of develop for one platform and port to another, every company likes and prefers to use their own favorite software tools to develop. What works on one platform may not work so/as well on another. Porting may cost more than the original dev. Which is to say that depending on how this DLC sells, they may very well be breaking even for Bethesda.

Don’t look at this issue as a PS fanboy, you’ll be doing the exact same thing that Sony execs did by assuming “we’re great and everyone else will come along”. That’s why the PS3 was not properly marketed.

I love my PS3, and no I don’t own a 360, but just remember, game companies will only go where the money is, or else it isn’t worth doing.

btw: I’m still upset about being left in the lurch about DLC and moreover patching (vamp glitch for GOTY) that should’ve been addressed for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, so I have my own gripes about that! lol

  • modern warfare 2, uncharted 2, assassin creed 2. sorry bethesda u made a huge mistake

  • Wow, I’m impressed by the level of anger over Bethesda’s buggy titles. A few hundred comments generally raising the same points, and not a single response to them.

Bethesda, this is not how to win over customers. You need to fix your darn bugs. You’ll have a much bigger set of loyal customers, and that leads to bigger profits. Unless of course microsoft are keeping you sweet with funds just to ensure your releases to rival consoles are to be bugfests and remain substandard.

  • I lost all faith in Bethesda, this is just a straight up spit in your face insult

  • i wont support it because i dont like the way ps3 gamers were treated

you want support? you give ps3 gamers the same treatment as other console gamers

i dont want the dlc a year later than the other console so you can do some more milkage, i want it at the same time

if you cant do that then no money from me

  • Either fully support your product on the PS3 or keep your next game a 360 exclusive. You guys and gals deserve all the hate from this blog post for lying to a large portion of customers and favoring another who all purchased the same game.

I have NO problem with deals made for exclusive content, but don’t say it is NOT going to be available on the PS3 console, drive sales for the 360, then turn around and say “Gottcha!”, you guys will get it too….9+ months later. like you are doing us a favor and pacifying us with your “reasons” within this blog post.

again, I will not be buying this DLC and I hope the sales figures represent that as well. I don’t care if your stats show that you make more of your money on the 360. The reason for that fact is apparent…you care about that user base first and foremost.

I know your support for the PS3 will not stop because there is too much money to be made here. Your release of this DLC only proves that. We are more than ATM’s Bethesda, treat us with SOME respect as consumers.

  • Wow Thanx for answering my question as to whether the DLC will be region free. There’s no way I’m going to risk buying it from the UK store if there’s a chance it’s not going to work.

Bethesda you’ve really made a mess of this DLC for PS3, (second only to the mess of Rock Band’s European release) you should be ashamed. Terrible way to run a business, irritating your customers and fans. Joke of a company. Shove your DLC.

  • Sellout company.

Take Microsofts money, shaft the PS3 owners then expect to come back down the line with DLC thats been available for ages elsewhere.

Your not making quick cash from me Bethesda, run back to M$ surely they can slip you a few extra $.

  • @354 “With the extra couple of months,
they can have much more time to test the packs and work out the bugs that were present in the other versions”

    They wont.

    Enough is enough, can’t take it anymore, sorry if I offend anyone but;

  • I can’t believe you guys defending Bethesda, I may look like an “Idiot” or a “Crybaby” to you, but you look to me like you have some nationalist fetish. With Vaseline.

And to those using the old “Business=money, dude, you don’t get it” sophism I tell you:

Nintendo spent 10% of it’s budget in R+D for the Wii, The other 90% in an aggressive marketing campaign with happy families eating salad and Nicole Kidman Getting Smarter.

    Sony did the opposite.

Now, are you gamers or stockbrokers? are Wii games better than PS3’s? Is Nicole Kidman making your games more fun? WTH with the sales and money argument?

You see, in the Bethesda forums you can find the same kind of damage control, be it masochists, or being downright Bethesda employees.

Bethesda’s attitude and permeability towards criticism can be explained in 3 phases:

    1-Cover Ears.

    2-Sing LALALALALA very loud.

3-Hire people to destroy any information relative to the unplayable
amount of bugs their games have.

    Period.

  • Hmm… now it looks like the 360 and PC will get Mothership Zeta before the PS3 sees it. Screw all of Bethesda’s DLC.

  • @351

You are a moron. There should be a discount because the 360 got the DLC so long ago while PS3 owners are STILL waiting. Try buying every media product you want 9 months after release at full price and see how long you like that.

  • Might aswell not release the DLC, how many people wait an entire year for DLC? Most already have it on 360 or PC.

  • @372 clupula668
All those games you mention have one KEY factor in common. They all came out late or was going to come out late on the PS3. Eternal Sonata was a year late, these Fallout 3 DLC are going to be basically a year late, and The Last Remnant was caned because it is the worst JRPG to ever be release this generation next to Blue Dragon.

“It’ll just be raw sales. Now, if they sell well, you will definitely see the next round of DLC release at the same time.”
-Keep on believing that. All these companies are going to see it…”oh look they buy year old ports and DLC, we can keep making them last on the list between the Xbox 360 and PC because they will just buy it anyway.” We need to make them realize that we will not stand being treated like a red headed step-child. Release the contents on all systems at they same time, and you will make more money from the consumers on the PS3 sides of things. Release it a year late with not additional benefits for the PS3 owners or at a lower price and watch as you do not meet the expected sales.

  • Here’s some news for ps3 fans. Mothership Zeta DLC for the xbox 360 will be released by August 3. You know what that means. It means that all 5 of the Fallout 3 DLC will be released for the 360 before a single piece of DLC has been released for the ps3. Here’s something else for people who haven’t realized it yet. If the ps3 hasn’t received the first piece of DLC until late September, then the GOTY edition for ps3 probably won’t arrive till late December at best.

  • Are you serious, Ice_Snake? Bethesda are NAZIs now???

  • @391
Ever run a business? I have. Trust me, it’s all about money. If you have group A who you can sell to, and you’re guaranteed a profit, you sell to them first. Group B becomes secondary simply by the uncertainty of whether or not you’ll make a profit from them. Group B does not buy said product, when it is finally offered to them, why bother with them, at all next time? Group B may have had legitimate reasons for not buying, but those don’t matter if Group A will still buy, no matter what.

In other words, a boycott would only send a message if they weren’t going to make a profit from the 360 either. You’re not teaching anybody anything if one group still makes them money. Company accountants only look at the numbers. If the PS3 version doesn’t sell, they don’t think, “Boy, we should release the PS3 version earlier.” They think, “PS3 sales are lacking. See if Microsoft will give us more money for exclusivity TO MAKE UP FOR THE POOR PS3 SALES!”

  • Bethesda is a joke. No one should support them. But all of this is also Sony’s fault for not working with third parties. Sony spends money with trash like Haze, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Heavy Rain, and Home, instead of actually trying to secure good third party exclusives.

  • @387

Uh, what? Was there actually a point in your post? Now, before I get too harsh with you, I am getting the feeling English is not your first language, so I’ll try not to judge.

However, I don’t actually get what your point is. That Sony makes better games than Nintendo? What does that have to do with Betheseda or game sales determining what games go to PS3/360?

And a Nationalist fetish? What would being attracted to people who love their country above all others have to do with anything? Because that’s what having a Nationalist fetish would mean. But as I said, if English is not your first language, I can understand why your point would’ve gotten lost.

  • so its literally going to have been TEN MONTHS since i got the game before the DLC comes? Damn. I’ll wait as long as it takes, fallout IS that good of a game, but in the future don’t tell people even a rough date (i.e. end of june) if you’re going to delay it 3 MORE MONTHS (i.e. maybe september). it alienates your fanbase

  • @395

Yeah, how dare Sony try to make original IP’s. They should just stick to Nintendo’s Mario/Zelda/Metroid/rinse/repeat formula. I mean why are we not at God of War 8 already? Who actually wants innovation, right?

Oh, and Sony didn’t make Haze.

  • Evil Microsoft is going to come and get us!

  • RyanMcBainDOTcom

    F U Bethesda!!!!!

  • Absolutley horrid, end of september …screw that ive been waiting, checking online, asking ppl at eb EVERYDAY and now i hear this …selling the game as much as i like it. Keep it up, keep losing peoples interest bethesda
