PlayStation 3 Firmware (v3.00) Update

1,985 0

Hi everyone, PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.00) adds a number of great new features that we’re excited to share with you. The latest update incorporates changes that improve navigation on your PS3. First, you’ll notice some cosmetic changes to the design of the XMB (Xross Media Bar). We’ve enhanced the look and feel of the XMB so that it’s easier and even more intuitive to use. We’ve also added network improvements and personalization options to help enhance your PS3 experience.

Additional highlights from update 3.00 include:

  • “What’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “What’s New” section, which allows you to enjoy interactive PlayStation news every time you start the PS3 system. Located under the PlayStation Network icon, “What’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games, in a sleek, new animated format.
  • Status Indicator – In the top right corner we’ve added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock.
  • Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles.
  • PlayStation Store Shortcuts – We’ve added a handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily.
  • Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store. A dynamic theme takes your screen to a whole new level as it incorporates animated objects into the background.
  • Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content. Base and add-on game trophies will continue to be combined into a single list so you can see where you stand in a game as a whole. Within that list, trophies will be broken out into subcategories—base trophies and add-on trophies—that way, you can easily view the percentage of your base game trophy collection, and separately track your trophy progress in add-on packs. Look for this enhancement to be included in upcoming games.

We’re looking forward to releasing firmware update 3.00 soon. As always, we appreciate your feedback.

  • I hope you have the choice of picking a trophy Icon as your avatar!

  • Anyone have any idea as to what time the update will be available in the UK?

  • Where is this update anyway? it’s been over 2 weeks since it was announced. Obviously it’s finished or else it wouldn’t have been shown and the PS3 slim is out tomorrow. Just curious.

  • It should be coming anytime now!

  • Is the Bravia sync included in this firmware or it´s exclusive to the ps3 slim?

  • lol were almost in the day.. :P

  • @scotharvath09
Good call and good idea. that wouldn’t be such a bad idea plus sony would be making money doing that as well.. and we would get better updates

    @brkn_ogr
epic fail on your comment. first off they took the hardware out to make the ps3 cheaper and sony took other hardware as well that was unnecessary (for example they took 2 usb ports and the memory card readers)so the ps3 would be cheaper. secondly not all ps3 play ps1 games you dumb a$$

  • IT OUT YA!!

  • i just cant wait.

  • Firmware 3.00 is out! I’m installing it right now! :)

  • Man this looks nice….

  • Installed and ready to go…

  • I installed and Playstation Network failed. Internet and all is working but PSN failed. Is it down for anyone else?

  • Well, I installed the update, but now PSN won’t sign me in :(

  • Yeah, since installing v3.00 I can no longer log on through PSN either.

  • Probably because everyone is downloading the update right now, it should be back when everything calms down I hope.

  • Hopefully this a temporary lack of bandwidth or some error, and nothing long-term with the update. I like it and don’t want the update recalled.

  • Ok, looks like I’m back on PSN. Maybe an issue with the servers busy with the download?

  • Jus came out, its amazing

  • I still can’t log on to the psn :(

  • IT’S OUT YAY!

  • Whats with all these useless updates, I thought 3.0 was supposed to be good. How about you guys start adding usefull features that were due back at system launch? For example maybe some in game chat ( No not ingame text ). Only good things were the dynamic backgrounds and the infobar and even those are minor. WHAT A LET DOWN!

    Not worth download wait time.

  • Download and update went smoothly, love the status bar and new features. I don’t like the look of the new friends list at all, though. It looks too Xbox with the big gray bar behind the name. Please consider the option of different friends list themes and allow the original to be a choice. I think it looked a lot better!

  • wheres the in/out voice chat sony?!?!?!
    with party invite chat invitations
pretty lousy update sony its not bad but xbox live update was amazing!

  • Just downloaded it and I think it’s pretty darn cool! Thank you Sony! I like the new look and I just downloaded the little big planet dynamic them and I love it. Can’t wait to see the new dynamic themes that come out. I love that you can access the videos, ps classics, etc. without having to go into the psn. Again, job well done.

  • Pretty good update! But give me the opportunity to choose the old font size! Sony, Im not blind!!!!!!!!

  • Are you serious?? What’s 4.0 going to be? Updated fonts to increase the overall aesthetic appeal? C’mon, I don’t remember the last time there’s been a FW update that has actually mattered. Don’t get me wrong the PS3 is easily my favorite console, but give me something to work with guys!

  • this new update is great and will glad to see more new avatar’s (long overdue)

  • I want to display my hard earned trophies on the friendslist. Could you guys add that in the upcoming firmware update?

  • I like most of the features, but when I saw the friends-list live this morning I really didn’t like it.. Is there a way to disable the background of the friends?

Also the side-menu color was changed after the update.. It was always black-grey but now I can’t seem to give it that color anymore..

The status indicator in the top of the screen simply ROCKS!! It’s one of the best improvements! Also the blurring takes some getting used to, but that made things really more clear! (Yes, I know how this sounds hahah)

  • WHY IS THERE NO SUPPORT FOR MOVING GIFS.

id also like to add more info to the music videos. like sort by artist and ADD ARTIST. just like in the music section.

  • I love the new ideas behind the XMB. It looks like you’re really streamlining it to make it easier to not only access, but navigate.

I can’t wait to see what you do with the dynamic themes in the coming months, too. I already bought the LBP one (huge fan), but if an inFAMOUS one is on the way, consider that one bought, too.

The only thing I don’t like is the PS Store icons under GAME and VIDEO. It was enough to have them in one spot, rather than scattered here and there. And, the tags on the friend’s list makes it look too busy and harder to see, just at a glance, who’s online and who’s off. I liked just seeing an avatar, name and quote… not a huge box.

Besides that, its still pretty cool and, as I said, I can’t wait to see its potential realized in the coming months.

  • I have a 1080p Bravia and the new bigger icons look really awkward, the XMB definitely needs an option to make it smaller again (prior to 3.00).
And besides the new grey boxes on the friends list are ugly, really ugly. Please take them back.
The new status bar is nice though.

  • so this is why u didnt show the friend section… you knew it sucked :|

  • Pretty good update, the status bar is good, although the font reminds me of my 98 PC running low resolution, its really sucked the fun out of the HD. At first I thought the freind bars had customizable backgrounds and was like WOW but… grey?… rrreeaallyy?

  • All this is pretty awesome but its still not what i want
the thing i want is the only thing which is on the xbox 360 which i want on ps3…
this thing is in game chat…
i want to be able to tlk to my friends whilst im playing a game like oblivion…
    please do this, soon :)

  • Why can’t we revert back to old font size. I am far sighted and I am having a hard time seeing it.

The friend’s list really reminds me going from a Vista computer to a Windows 2000 machine. It’s lost all it’s class.

And for the life of me I cannot find the option to go back to the old XMB.

Please don’t classify my Playstation 3 as a PS3. I have 2 of the holy grail of Playstation 3’s (60gb) and now it turns on with the logo of the cheap chinese plastic PS3 that just came out. Bring back the beautiful Playstation 3 logos back.

And where are the things that matter? Cross talk chat, shoutcast support. You know? This should have been 2.9, because this was only a asthetic update, not a functional one IMO.

  • Now I turn on the Playstation 3 to play a Manly game of COD4 and I see my screen tossing pixie dust around. Are you sure that wasn’t there to represent salad lettuce?

  • It Bumped Up My GTA IV Trophy Percentage From 69% To 81%. So When I Get Platinum Ill Have 115%. My Friend Was At 84% and Bumped to 98% without platinum

  • “Do you want to run the plug-in?”

  • Ok so first off…

    Whats New?

Well which genius thought up this? because if I was playing a game the night before the disc is most likely going to still be in the playstation, and I have it start on the game screen anyway so I can just press X.

Whats the point in moving it to another menu?

The same for downloaded games, they are in the game list too.

Playstation Store in more than one menu? whats the point in that? I had no problem crossing over to the menu for it.

I dont like the new logo, dont like the changes you’ve made.

EPIC FAIL PS3 Network Operations and Strategic Planning.

Give us the ability to start a chat in the playstation screen and then play a game while still chatting.

    Give us PS2 Emulation

Dont give us pathetic changes that make your £300+ PS3 look like a cheap slimline PS3.

If I wanted one I would have bought one.

  • This update sucks copious amounts of balls.

  • iam downloading the version 3.00, and a cant wait! It looks wicked!!!!!

  • Sorry Eric, the new friend list is crappastic ugly. Take it back.

  • FYI: OtherOS option is still available after update to v3.0
Linux on PS3 still works. Thank you Sony!

  • Downloaded it and it’s even better than i thought but just one small thing i’m not sure about and thats how the friend list looks now ;-( i liked the older one better but i’ll get use to it i suppose, but a big thanks to SONY for this update 9 out of 10 from me people.

  • REQUEST
(for things that actually matter to the end user)

    [Main Priorities]
.Better Browser – Get an Opera build perhaps? It works great on mobiles.
    .Better Music/Media Player
    -search function
    -library support
    -more visualizations
    -larger album art display mode
    .Better Codec/Format Support (FLAC,OGG,MKV)
    .Netflix support
    [Secondary]
    .RSS feed support
.improve wallpaper setting to behave like psp
    .Bluetooth as sound output device
    .DVD working with remote play

I’m not sure I really like the idea, but perhaps you just need to open up a strictly regulated apps store if you’re not willing to offer actual functionality in your firmware updates.

Address the laughable browser stability – yes the system has no RAM, still. Also, I have an HDTV, and it’s really, really annoying to have to manually reset my zoom just to get it to fill the screen without overscan-zooming horridly outside my 1080p viewport every time I switch back to a page from another.

    Thanks for listening

  • When i first got my playstation 3 some years ago, it was great for playing games, then they added in-game XMB and adding the playstation store, movie downloads, now i am so so glad i bought one. And i LOVE the new features of animated backgrounds! i can’t believe computer companies haven’t adopted this idea. pictues get boring but this is really cool. As is the ease of accessing the store through each of the XMB tabs. Sony, You have went above and beyond my expectations with the playstation. And i cannot believe they have already released a slim PS3 3 years after its release. It has come a long way from its humble begginnings, i can only imagine as whats to come…

  • ^^^Nice trolling…

I NEVER post on message boards or comment sections, but, like so many others, I too was compelled to fully express my disappointment.

Pros: Scroll Bar, Video Controls, Notification Area, Triangle on Trophies to Sync

Cons: Multiple Store Icons, Horrible Friends List, CONSTANT TICKER, Fade Effects (Wallpaper Blur & Album Disappearance)

I have a 50″ and the font/icon sizes don’t bother me (nor does the start-up or splash screen issues), but the main icons are so big on some themes they swallow the entire section name underneath (Photo, Video, Game, etc).
