It’s confirmed! The PlayStation 3 is now available for $299. Yes, NOW! Today, Kaz Hirai also announced a new, slimmer form factor 120 GB PS3 (available September 1st). SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton shows off the new hardware in this video.

FINALLY!
Replaceable HDD? Probably. The panel below the disc drive looks like it can be removed. My guess is the HDD is there.
Backward Compatible? Of course not. That is a software issue. When that problem is solved, every PS3 will be backward compatible. I would imagine that if it were included in 3.0 it would have been headlined in the demo video, so I’m going to assume it has not arrived yet. Eyes will be on TGS for that one. But expecting the launch of a new unit to boast that feature over any existing one doesn’t make any sense.
I hope you are right KazeEternal. That would not be a smart move on Sony’s part to not allow the hard drive to be replaced. I hope we get an official response soon.

putting the bd drive on top of the hard drive, with no fans and almost no ventilation holes is not a great idea, is it?

how about instead of wasting time and money on the exact same thing, only smaller. sony actually spends some of that time getting games out on time and oh, here’s a thought, make them actually good. maybe this would be justifiable if they actually made the system better in any way at all, which they haven’t. at least it doesn’t break every 4 months like another system i know of. which they aren’t supposed to do anyway so that doesn’t really count. learn to company management, noobs!
What a letdown, i must say the price cut is good, but no B/C returning is not going to help you, i refer you to that gamefaqs poll that was taken a few days ago, when asked if you’d buy a slim at 299$?, over 50% of the people responded:
if it was bachwards compatible with ps2 games.
Obviously you haven’t learned how big a system seller it is and how now your losing many sales over it, but of course, that means little right?

If it had a better design and backwards compatibility, I would consider buying it (I already own a 60Gb version with backwards compatitbility with ps2)

Pay attention dude. Sony’s PS3 Slim news have been leaked for months now. Microsoft already took measures and lowered their console to $299. Now both consoles are the same price. I even think Microsoft Arcade sku is even cheaper then $299. That’s what happens when you cant keep a secret.

God no! That is part of the reason that Sony doesn’t suck. You buy a product, they support it (for years) and Sony doesn’t release a bunch of products that are only slightly better than the last ones (think all apple products, especially the iPod). No, they will never charge for firware updates.
Great move Sony, now, why don’t you offer the slim at a slightly higher price that plays all of people’s PS2 games? You must realize how many people own a PS2, why not make one for those upgrading so they can play all of their games? I think this is one of the big negatives still hurting PS3, millions of people might upgrade faster.

i think this design is ugly, i prefare the orginal playstation3 design :), and also i dont think playstation would release in game voice chat because if they are goin to release cross game voice chat they would have atleast announced it knowing evry1 would want this feature

Looks like a piece of crap. It’s crap that they redesign so fast. It’s a slap in the face to anyone who just bout a 120 gb system for 479.00. They should offer to upgrade anyones system if they bought in the last 12 months also.
why is it so much more in the uk than the us the price is $300 and it should be £200 but its £250 where did that £50 come from?

Although I applaud the decision to make a slim PS3 and price drop, I have to say, the system is some kind of ugly. It doesn’t look like a Sony product to me… but I suppose looking beyond the aesthetics, all the functionality is there and at the price point, I would really hope any remaining fence-sitters would just hop onto the PS3 train already. 3 years into this lifecycle, it would be foolish not to get into this generation with the PS3 offering Blu-ray movies and the best gaming lineup of all time.
