  • I do have a question for sony. does the new ps3 have 802.11n?

  • @199 jbat17 let’s not start that flame war yet again. Just accept that BC is very important to some people and let it go.

  • It’s nice to see the PS3 get a bit smaller, but with no new features, it doesn’t really convince me to pick up a second one or replace my current model. I still use my original 60GB to play PS2 games quite often. I really hope it keeps working (no problems in 2 years) because I don’t want to downgrade to a model that can’t play my PS2 games if I ever have to replace it.

  • Oh wow, and people are already complaining. Were they born yesterday, or did they seriously not expect any price drop, ever? Whatever extra I paid was WORTH IT because I was enjoying it that much earlier.

Or maybe new car owners should get checks every year just for owning cars because the cars they own will most certainly go down in value, which means the “early supporters” get a slap in the face when lower prices are offered… yeesh.

  • When I saw the leaked pictures, I honestly thought you guys had better designers…words escape me other than:

Damn, that thing is unbelievably ugly. Did you seriously pay someone for that design, cause you all got shafted.

I’ll tell you what’s “staggering” is that you actually put that form factor into production.

Glad to see you got rid of the stupid Spider-man font though.

That’s all I have to say about that.

  • Replaceable HDD?

  • Great news. Mr. Tretton is a very good speaker :-)

  • Pretty cool. Bought Madden 2010 for Ps3 this year and switched over majority of multi platform titles. 360 died a long time ago.

I like my OG 60gb personally… But if it should ever give out ill pick a slim up.

  • Price drop is good and all, but how do you even expect to get your PS2 customers to move over to the PS3 when there is no backwards compatibility?

Instead they will probably just buy a 360 which comes for the same price, has better online and is the system that “all my friends have.”

At the moment the PS3 barely has any connection with the PS2, no backwards compatibility, and no PS2 games on the PSN store…so really a potential customer will feel like they are going into “alien territory” with both the PS3 & 360, but they will probably end up choose the 360 due to the reasons I stated above…even though they owned a PS2.

  • The original PS3 system looks waaaaay better. I think Ill stick with the original.

  • Awsomeness! LOL!

  • @201
the official specs state it’s 802.11b/g

  • Great price, but I hate the matte finish. It’s what’s inside that counts, however, and Playstation is still king to me.

  • Nice, cheaper console and slimer, that’s great, but please dond’t take away anything like blueray. wi.fi, bluetooth etc, because i,m getting the new one as soon as posible…thks sony for your products…..best gaming console ever….

  • cross game chat will be on next update after 3.0 i bet.;)

  • OMG !!!!!

THIS IS THE REAL DEAL MAN !!!!!

NOW WHRE TALKING BIG AND GREAT DEAL !!!!!

    WAY TO GO SONY !!!!!

  • Awesome!!! I’m gonna give my current PS3 to my brother and get this one, I disliked the shiny stuff, mine has smudges all over!

  • Looks like you can replace the HDD from the front? Check the front picture, below the disc drive opening. Looks like it can be opened, can be wrong though.

I’ve posted the pictures on my facebook before this blog so I’ve studied them pretty well and I really like the style :)

  • All it needs is PS2 BC to be a serious ass kicking machine! Free motion wand included next year and pow, pow, pow… firing starting.

  • Glad I bought 2 60GB launch units!
I think the front view of the slim is nice but the rest of it looks terrible.
Should make a lot of people happy though, so nice work!

  • My brother recently convinced me to get a PS3 even though I already had an XB360. I’m so glad I did. The graphics are amazing. Even having paid $100 more than the new price – Im no less unhappy.
Great price. However, I’ll keep my FATBOY.
If you cannot upgrade the hdd, that lends itself more to the proprietary issues of the xbox’s hdd. No like it!
However for those not concerned its a great price for a great system.

  • Hello,
I hear a lot of talk about this 3.x firmware.
I hope that you may be still taking suggestions of features? My main one is Matroska support. Support for .mkv filetype containers. Usually with multiple audio channels and subtitle options. Many high def blu-ray rips are contained in this format. And no, there are legal blu-ray rips that allow for a downloadable version of such a move/documentary/film/whatever. Someone always seems to think I’d be doing illegal things with matroska files.
Really, I just want to be able to stream them from my PC to the computer using a media server that doesn’t need to reencode them.

  • Outside power source? Memory Stick slots? Anyone know?

  • feature wise and updatability wise Microsoft simply cannot compete!
their hdd max is 120GB while the PS3 allows user upgrades to upto 1TB “soon”.

the next xbox360 update isn’t going to allow user upgradeable hdd’s either and it’s peak is going to stay around 250GB for the same price as a PS3 which really is pretty overpriced for the xbox360 as it lacks blu-ray and free online…

  • Now fix my bluray drive for less than 150 please

  • I have three things to say. Two of them are questions and the other is my personal opinion.

    First off,

Will there be backwards compatibility with this newer, slimmer version?

    Is the hard drive swappable?

…and thirdly for my personal opinion.

Don’t take it in offense but the design of the slim is atrocious!

    Thanks!

  • PSlim looks like the most ghetto system to walk this dear earth. Sad really…I dont care how small you make it. Crappy design is crappy design…no getting around it. :/

  • From the pictures it looks like the lower right faceplate with all the compatibility logos under the disk drive might be removable and there could be a HDD expansion port there…

  • @201 the PS3 has gigabit Ethernet.
    what more do you need?

802.11n isn’t necessary for gaming or video streaming, just use 100mbps ethernet or connect gigabit.

  • @225 fix blu-ray?
what did you do with your PS3?

  • Love the new slim form factor but I’ll miss the piano black and ability to load Linux on there.

They should also bring back the software emulator, or even better bring back the emotion chip on higher end models. If they can put one on a PS2 Slim for $99, why can’t they put one on the PS3 Slim for an extra $99 or less? I can’t imagine the chip being that expensive.

Until then I’ll hold onto my original PS3 w/ full backward compatibility and swapped out 320GB HD… :)

Still, good job to Sony for keeping a large portion of the major features like blu-ray and WiFi, while slimming down the hefty bulk and upping the HD to 120GB. Hopefully this will up the install base for PS3 gamers this holiday season and ultimately attract more developers to the PS3 platform.

  • No PS2 playback back? :-(

  • According to CNET, the HDD is upgradeable through a panel on the front.

  • What the hell, i can’t believe that ugly ugly really ugly thing is real. As soon as Ken left, Sony lost it’s freaking style. This is ugly and so is the Go!.

I’ll be keeping my original PS3 as it’s shiny, sleek and eyecandy at every angle.

really what’s up with the ugly design? and that ugly logo? its actually wider even though it’s a slim, why is there need for a slim version now anyway?…….

    /rage.

  • acceptable

  • Good: Slim
    Bad: Ugly
    Best: Price

  • I’ve got the 60GB version with the emotion chip. However, I’ve played out my PS2 games and have given them away to family members with PS2s. I have never used the memory card slots and I can accept 2 USBs compared to 4. Can someone give me a good reason not to sell my old BC PS3 and trade up to the Slim?? I think I’m just trading backwards compatibility for new hardware.

  • nice to see a price cut…. that PS3 logo though is ugly to say the least

  • LOL is that the real reason why people got a ps3, for it’s SHINE. XD cmon I know I don’t really need this… until I get the YLOD ;)

  • I think the new design is ugly, but the hard drive space is nice and price drop is great.

I have a 40 gb “Big Lug” PS3, so I’m bitter that I paid $399 last year for it. But hey I got Spider-Man 3 on Blu-Ray for free!!!

Quite possibly the worst movie ever. >:O

  • Great news !

I think the sales are going to increase quite a bit now with this.

    A very good move Sony.

  • The slim looks SEXYYYY! I am selling my fat PS3 for the slim!

  • wish u guys would have stuck with the old font and style. dont really like the mate finish but im still gonna try to get one.

  • Thats amazing! Very tempting to get a 2nd one… Just one question will it be backwards compatible?

  • how much will the 160 gb and the 80 gb cost now that the slim is out???

  • Price cut is awesome and the slim version too but personally i prefer the look of the original tho i guess you needed some change to make a significant price cut its all great

  • I noticed they said a couple of times that it has a ‘built-in’ 120G HDD. Does this mean it’s an integral unit built in or will we be able to swap out HDD’s? That could be a deal breaker for me if it’s truly built-in.

  • No backwards compatibility.

    Fail.

  • I got 1 question does the new ps3 slim decode Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio in bitstream so it shows up on my receiver as Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio? and not LPCM. Thanks
