It Only Does Everything

I’m excited today to unveil our brand new ad campaign for PlayStation 3. This year is going to be a game-changing year for PlayStation. Last week, we extended an incredible value proposition with the $299 price move and the introduction of a sleek new form factor for the 120 GB PS3. We’ve coupled this news with a truly unmatched content line up this year with some of the most eagerly anticipated games in our history. But this is just half the story. Today we are laying down the final puzzle piece with a new marketing campaign for the PS3 and the introduction of its new tagline, “It Only Does Everything.”

You may remember our MLB ad from earlier this year where we introduced Dustin Pedroia’s “Dear PlayStation” spot and our resident PlayStation expert Kevin Butler. These new ads, created by our partners at Deutsch LA, birthed a new campaign in which we will have direct conversations with consumers about everything the PS3 can do. And as you’ll see below, “It Only Does Everything.”

We know many of you would agree that the PS3 is an unrivaled gaming console. It’s also the best Blu-ray player on the market. And most of you are probably aware that you can now download more than 2,000 movies without even leaving your couch. However, we recognize there are still many consumers who may not be aware of how powerful the PS3 truly is. So we’ve tailored this campaign a bit differently to extend our reach and PS3 family.

From now through the holiday season, you’ll see and hear about all the broad features and benefits this amazing device has to offer across multiple media including TV, radio, online, retail and social networking outlets. A total of 9 TV spots will roll out throughout the holiday, each highlighting a different benefit and feature of the PS3. So whether you’re a hardcore gamer or a Blu-ray enthusiast, you will have something to takeaway from these ads.

We’re kick starting the campaign with a TV spot highlighting the new $299 price point on September 1. But for you, our loyal fans, here’s an official sneak peek.

It’s a fully integrated campaign that seamlessly intertwines hardware, gaming and PlayStation Network benefits under one umbrella, each with a dose of our own irreverent humor. We knew you’d want more than just one peek, so here’s a spot in which Kevin commiserates with a consumer about getting her boyfriend to get his PS3 connected to the PlayStation Network. Enjoy!

We look forward to your feedback and continued excitement, for what will be a truly great holiday and year for PlayStation. There’s more to come, so stay tuned.

Thanks,
Peter Dille

  • BIG step in the right direction! Go get’em, Sony!

  • I love these :D Can’t wait to see the other ads :D

  • It Only Does Everything … but Linux.

After removing the OtherOS feature this sounds like a bad joke to me :(.

  • Unsatisfied Girlfriend …. lol

  • These ads are brilliant! Well done! :D

  • I do NOT like the “It only does everything” campaign.

There are several HUGE gaps in the “everything” that would prevent me from needing to consider hooking my desktop computer up to my living room television.

    1. DVR / PVR – Come on! You gave it to Europe! Just make one with ATSC / ClearQAM support and IT WILL BE A HUGE HIT in the US! I have been waiting on a decent non-subscription (NOTE: I hate that business model from Tivo) DVR system for a long time. Seems to only be available as an add-on to PCs still :-(. Sony almost had it, but just hasn’t followed through.

    2. Additional streaming video sites, such as Hulu.com…. I am disappointed that sites are allowed to refuse a media request just due to the type of device it is coming from. You guys should get the legals of that corrected!

    3. Streaming tv shows with commercials inserted. I only want to watch a movie or tv show 1 time, and 1 time only…. so I do not want to buy it. I would consider renting, but would prefer commercials placed in it instead.

Get features like this fixed, then you can say “It only does everything”!

  • Funny, but did they have to go there with the Nigerian millionaire thing.

  • Well it took long enough but everything shouldn’t be said if your not planning something big update wise.

    1.We need adhoc

    2. I don’t like how everytime my tv has to reset the resolution and we need upscale of all PS3 titles to 1080P

    3. We need a overhaul of the XMB cause 3.0 is still blend but with some twist and get rid of the grey icons

    4. Voice chat and ingame invites although I don’t care about it

    5. Support for PS1 & PS2 titles on all models

    6. Playtv

    7. Options for what appears on the xmb cause I hate the picture thing that was added

    8. More codec support like mkv and 3gp and such which isn’t supported

    9. Playstation blog app

    10. Browser needs flash 10 and performance updates as well as some other improvements.

  • hey guy… Backwards compatibility is gone for good. Its time to move on.

  • 11. More visuals for the media player

    12. File manager for removeable disk

    13. Manditory trophies, ingame music, screen capture

    14. A better media UI for Music along with more fast forward options like x1 and x2

    15. We need a better community and a way to interact with developers and Sony

    16. Improved UI across the system

    17. Video store needs a lot more content and Canada needs some love

    18. PSN needs more PS & PS2 content

    19. UK and other countries get a lot more then we do also we need a better look for the blog cause the UK is nicer

I understand there are some restrictions but talk to us more and let us know what’s going on instead of keeping is in the dark about things.

  • 100/100 :D

  • Awesome!

Love the new ads and I love my new PS3 Slim!

  • Can’t wait for the PSP Go!

  • “It Only Does Everything*!)

    (*except play PS2 games)

Am I the only one that sees the irony in this new campaign?

  • The commercials weren’t too bad, I got a chuckle or two. However, my African-American friends didn’t like the Nigerian comment too well! I wonder how N’Gai Croal is going to take that one.

On a side note: My PS3 does do everything because I bought an used 60GB model a year ago after my PS2 was stolen. Of course I think Sony broke in and took my PS2 to force me in buying a PS3! LOL

  • These ads are great.

  • Great ads, I cant wait until they are all on You Tube.

  • haha those are pretty awesome

  • haha those are pretty awesome :)

  • And he hates candles too!!! COME ON!!!!!!! Lol. Nice.

  • LOL, the moon with 299 was awesome.

  • It’s time to get over BC! I was pissed for a while, since I missed the PS2 completely. Now, there are too many games to play on the PS3! Time to move on people!

  • These are excellent ads! And truly hilarious! Can’t wait to see the other 7!

  • I lol’d at Unsatisfied Girlfriend :)

  • Does this means we are gonna get a Party System for a games not just a few like costume music?

  • These are the ads people want to see…along with the over the top Socom action hostage rescue ads and exagerrated humor Ratchet and Clank weapon testing ads.

The ads with the hip music, guys walking and flashy graphics will not pull in people to buy the product. You need humor or something dramatic.

You did the humor today! Great Job Marketing team.

  • After seeing these on Kotaku I had to stop by and say kudos. It’s been a while since a commercial has gotten genuine laughter out of me. Get these out everywhere and make sure they play often.

  • Lol i like the 2nd one better

  • lol, I’ve used the BC ability on my PS3 maybe twice…cross-game chat is probably the one legit gripe. Sony isn’t bringing BC because it will cannibalize sales of the PS2…which is only 99 bucks anyways…

  • FINALLY I LOVE YOU

FREAKIN POST THIS EVERYWHERE(well post as in put this on every channel possible not late at night on select channels LOL)

  • Come ooonnnn!!! haha golden, its good to see that Sony is advertising the PS3.

  • Wow, ads that make sense now….. AMAZING!!!!

  • lol awesome! especially the one with the “unsastified girlfriend” :D

  • Hahaha very nice, it’s refreshing to see these types of ads again. For one, they are actually entertaining. And most importantly it shows a shift in Sony’s thinking. I’m hoping they are realizing the mistakes they’ve made since the PS3 launched and are trying to return to the roots of what made PlayStation a hit.

  • LOL these commercials are freaking hilarious, great job Sony, hope to see these all the time, C’MON!, lol, hilarious.

  • I love the new ads.
but you guys should make one that will cater kids. I mean c’mon! let the children know of this!
this way you’ll grab more profits.

  • Very good ads. Will we be able to see any of these ads here in Quebec? I have yet to see any ads about Sony products on Quebec channels

  • Excellent advertising. A hell of an upgrade over the launch ads nearly 3 years ago.

  • Very nice ads, and it is good to see Sonys Ad campaign starting to do decent commercials. I would have done it a bit different, but you still did a decent job!

  • Great Ads, both made me laugh and I think they will help a lot.

To all the people saying it doesn’t do BC or install Linux, wrap your head around this.

These ads are targeting the greater percentage of people that don’t know about the console, the ones on the fence, the ones that would buy it for playing PS3 games not PS2 games. Most of the average people this ad is towards, don’t even know about this blog, and certainly don’t know what if at all linux is, let alone want to install it on a games console.

we are a select few wanting BC, Linux etc. I do agree we need voice group chat tho..

I think they are great and hit the audience they intend to. Well Done, keep them coming.

  • For some reason, I can’t sign in from my ps3?! Anyway I think Sony should have been designing commercials for the non gamer/layman audience from day one. Most people over the age of thirty think the ps3 is nothing more than an overpriced gaming console, not a gaming console/BD player/Internet browser/CD ripper/social networking device/photo storage/video download service/substitute girlfriend, LOL.

Any news on the video store for us Canadiens?

  • The second video still makes me laughing, so hilarious…

It’s like a bathroom without aroma therapy candles… I know, he hates candles too!… Common… what’s wrong with him?! Hahaha… You should release the commercial over here in Europe as well.

  • I think these are great! Shold be very effective. I assume there will be more.

  • JESUS FINALLY!! You actually have GOOD comercials. Now all you need to do is put them on every station during every program and your good.

  • cmooooooooooooon!

  • Great ads…so proud of you SONY.
    ALL HAIL SONY!!!

  • It Only Does Everything…
    Except bake me cookies.

  • nice adverticements lol. they are funny

  • awesome ads guys.
