Come on SONY! Just make it right and so it soon, you (as a corporation) know that you don’t want to lose any loyal or even first time customers due to a glitch on your part. It is very plain to see that by the volume of posts here this is more than just a coincidence! I personally have a Sony PS3 80gb (US) first gen obviously or I wouldn’t be posting about my bricked PS3, a 46″ Sony Bravia XBR LCD 1080p HDTV “with the sweet floating glass display frame”, a Sony 7.1 surround sound receiver, a 5 disc Sony DVD player…. I really love Sony electronics, and always have since I bought a 36″ Sony Vega flat tube TV. Even though it weighed about 250 lbs. the picture was beautiful. I bought all of the listed Sony equipment except the last mentioned 36″ flat tube TV in the last three years. However, Sony if you leave me hanging on this issue and I am left with a $500+ DVD player that “used” to be a fully functional PS3… well then I will NEVER again buy ANYTHING that bears the SONY name on it EVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yet another one. I have a 60g ps3 and have never had any problems with it at all …. until i did the latest firmware download . My ps3 now wont read game discs or bluray discs . I have been in touch with Sony about this and have been told if you want it sorting out it will cost you £128. They said that it is nothing to do with the firmware and said that they have NOT heard of it being a widespread issue. Surely this cant be a coinsedence that so mant machines are breaking at the same time after downloading the latest firmware.
I just did an update as the missues brought a new sing star game. Console is 1.5 years old and in that time has had less than 24hrs use. went to play the game and the blu ray drive wont read a thing, game, dvd or blu ray movie.
First thing support said that the update cannot break the console and they are just rumours. shocking. currently listing my ps3 on ebay as we speak. sony can go **** them selves
Are people joining the class action suit against Sony? If so, how is it done? I am glad this subject is getting some press finally. Need more though.
My PS3 has been bricked 45 days now. I use my PS3 (or “used”) every day. It stopped working the second I downloaded the 3.0 FW update (80g BC) the day it came out.
I just want my PS3 fixed. Plain and simple I cannot believe that no one from Sony has posted news that this is going to be fixed in future update / etc. I will not pay to fix my system that they broke. Especially since there are so many great games coming out in the next 3-4 mos that I won’t be buying until I have a working PS3.

There is 1 class action lawsuit for the $150 “fixit” charge. There should be another class action lawsuit for everyone else who purchased a PS3 for the on-line gaming aspect – worthless without the current update.

Wanna know how I fixed my PS3 after a month of not playing games?
Tonight I went out and bought aNEW PS3 SLIM… Took it home, installed the update and it didn’t work!
I still could not play my PS3 games on the NEW PS3 SLIM.
Then I took out my Composite Video cords and plugged them into my SONY Bravia TV. Voila it worked again!
I did more tests and figured out what was happening. My SONY Bravia TV was trying to controll the HDMI inputs which was screwing up my game play with the PS3.
—— SOLUTION ——
1. Make sure your TV is not controlling the HDMI inputs.
2. Make sure your TV DOES NOT TURN ON when HDMI Inputs are detected automatically.
Hope this helps someone out there cause It drove me crazy for more than a month.
P.S. Sony, I am not impressed with your response to this problem…especially when I bought your products TV too!

as you can see in the video, it clearly shows 3.00 is faster, how did sony make the load times faster with the new firmware?
Never had any problems with my PS3, and, never visited a blog on PS3, nor have ever posted a comment on a blog… Ever. Until now. I’m going through the exact same ridiculous firmware update nightmare BS as the nearly thousand of other posts I’ve read.
I’ve got my family visiting from out of town and wanted to show my dad (who also has a PS3) my new addiction – Burnout Paradise. Go to the game, select, and.. freeze. What? Hard restart and tried it again. Tried everything. Every. Thing. I don’t know how many times we restarted that machine. Then I hopped online, mad as hell, and with barely any digging, search results revealed plenty. I read through the forums and news articles and am completely flabbergasted. C’mon Sony! I can see firmware problems, sure. But to charge your consumers to fix the problem YOU created?? Unacceptable. This is crazy and can’t believe I’m even going off in this forum, but I’m pissed. I’m a huge Sony fan and have stock with the company, but if this doesn’t get fixed pronto with zero costs to the consumer, I’m done. Fix it.

Our PS3 also stopped reading disks after the firmware update. Has anyone answered the question: “How do you join the class action lawsuit”?

According to the complaint, Kennedy purchased a PS3 in January, which operated without any problems until he installed the firmware update in September. The update, when downloaded, caused the Blu-ray drive to malfunction. Courthouse News has the complete complaint in PDF form.

I am waiting to see if we get any help from Sony from this as there seems to be more and more failures of the same kind and this cannot be a coinidence .. if nothing is done i will defo be moving over to an x-box
I have also fallen prey to this mandatory system suicide. I updated to 3.0, didn’t experience many problems, then I got 3.01, now whenever I try to play a BD game or movie, it will play for like 10 minutes then stop. I tried Demon Souls yesterday, I played for 10 minutes, then I was playing in the level further except the main graphics didn’t load, I could barely navigate thru the level but I could still play, until I got far enough that it would need to read the disc, then could go no further. It was a very weird experience. I have called Sony several times concerning the issue, they want me to spend $150 to fix what they broke. I have since filed complaints with the BBB and FTC, hope for a positive outcome. I want to continue spreading the word, Sony needs a wake up call, I joined this facebook group, I suggest we all do the same.

i spent over a $1,000u.s. dollars on games, updates and ps3 just to have you ruin my console with your updates.
we updated last week, and since then have been unable to play any games on discs. None too pleased. Hopefully, there will be a software fix for this soon, and the hardware isn’t fscked.

They should make a update so that you can listen to music while playing online or offline this feature should work for every game!!!!!! Also being able to move all your music files into one folder example: all you music like your bands into one folder say ‘MY MUSIC,’ ‘MY TRACKS’ or somthing and it arranges it in alphabetical order like a,b,c say BANDS starting with a,b,c….ect similar to sorting it ‘by track’ but rather ‘by band’ instead also so that when you listen to your music while gaming it plays all your music rather then having to manually change between music files, give it a random shuffle setting to. Same for movies,and make it be able to read more movie formats like better media player. Being able to upscale and curate better resolution and compress films. For those of us in the UK that are affected by this, i think it maybe worth sending your info and complaint to Watchdog, (i already have, and pointed them to these forums) as they are our largest consumer advice tv programme over here.
They already slammed Sony for it’s YLOD, and poor treatment of customers on the show 2 weeks ago. If enough of us UK based consumers that are affected fill out the form on the Watchdog website, maybe they’ll look into this for us, and hopefully name and shame Sony on tv again.
Though however we get our dissatisfaction across to the media, fingers crossed we eventually prompt the cowboy programmers into finding a solution for this…
I was not affected by 3.0, but after the 3.01 update the sound on all games, blu-ray films and DVDs would cut out every 5 mins or so for a few seconds, then return to normal. This was when sourcing sound through HDMI. Obviously this points to a shoddy HD cable, but it didn’t do it for 10 months before the 3.01 update and started happening as soon as I updated! I have managed to get round this by outputting the sound through the component cable into separate speakers.
So at the moment I’m in a much better position than anyone whos blu-ray functionality has failed, but I’m just counting down the days until that happens. SONY HAS CLUTTERED MY LIVING ROOM WITH AN EXTRA CABLE, AND ONLY ANN ROBINSON CAN PUT IT RIGHT!!!
Hey, I’m still at 2.80 and when I play Blurays I have sound during previews but none during movie. Anyone else with the same problems or solutions?
I just got back from a long vacation – and went to watch a Blu-ray with out reading forum – Installed the latest 3.1 patch and guess what – Bluray drive no longer works – Found the forum too late – Any news on fix or removal – Got the Orig 60Gig PS3 – never had a problem – I also have a 80 gig MGS console – Not going turn it until issue is resolved or more is known
Add me to the list of bricked PS3 owners after installing the 3.01 update. I have an original 20 g PS3 which has run perfectly for years, installed the 3.00 update and the controllers would no longer work unless plugged in, waited patiently for 3.01 update and my ps3 downloaded 51% of the update but stopped working. It will not even load a thing but safe mode now and nothing in there will make it work. I have approached Sony and all I get is the same pay $150 for a repair garbage. Sign me up for a class action lawsuit.

Well I did the update and now my PS3 does not even boot how do I fix this? I’m wondering if the update did something to the firmware or just data on the drive. I could probably format the drive get it reinstalled on the current hard drive but i dont even think that will work cause im not even getting what looks like a boot screen.

um..Hi Everyone. I hate to be so “Brand New”…but, could someone please point me in the right direction and tell me where to get the actual link to download the PS3 update?!
My PS3 hates me!! Im trying to upgrade the HD, but it won’t let me because I have to back-up the system update to v3.01. It’s rather large and I dont have the storage space to do so (yet) so I want to download it on my PC, extract it….and yada, yada, yada!! Any help on this would be great, thanks!
well, HOLY S#!T…(this is why I act so brand new sometimes)!! I failed to read the blog, and I would have fallen victim to the very same thing everyone is complaining about!! Why in the world is it possible to upgrade the HD, but then the stanky machine won’t work properly anymore?!
OK update it worked last night for about an hour then i played a demo quit the game and back to it being locked up. Tried to go back to safe mode now that isnt even working! Now i think my PS3 is a boat anchor thanks to the 3.0.1 update. Much appreciated SONY!
Swapping your HD will not help because this damaging firmware update is stored in flash memory, not on the hard drive. I still think someone needs to try to play a bluray movie via a linux operating system loaded onto their system. If that works then we have hard proof that the update is at fault.
WHy OH why, did i do this updat, I haven’t had internet all summer machine worked fine played games, before this new update and 3 months ago i went on playstation home I am fine, I update and i cannot logg into play station home, it played the movie i wished to watch no problem.
I go to log on to playstation network, i press to get on, then you see the (www) thing rolling then IT FREEZES i have tired 6 times, I give UP!, what a useless update, whoever designed it GOOOD JOB. THis machine is one year old not over played well maintained for as much dust as possible.etc

Saturday October 3rd my PS3 disc drive stopped working for the third time in 2 years. The first time the drive died days before my warranty ended. The second failure occurred moments after I removed my system from the box from the repair. The most recent failure has occurred after installing the recent 3.01 Firmware update from Sony. Now the system will occasional show a title in the XMB and will appear to load the opening menu but from there it’s useless. It will not read any Blu-Ray or Playstation 3 discs I load, meaning it’s now worthless as a Blu-ray media or game player. I contacted customer support and found out I am expected to pay $150 to repair it, even though I had nothing to do with its failure to operate and the fact that this is the 3rd failure since the purchase date. How can I be expected to
pay an additional $150 annually to keep my PS3 working?
And for what it’s worth I just updated to a new hard drive this week and that does not have anything to do with this issue.
As much as I enjoy Sony’s exclusive IP’s such as Gran Turismo and Ratchet and Clank I am forced to trade my PS3 in and convert to the 360. While MS. Has had hardware issues they appear to have corrected it. And if a user does get a RROD they’re covered. I will surely spread the word of my experiences with a reoccuring problem with a faulty Blu-Ray drive that has failed 3 times in 24 months, leaving me stuck with a $600 paperweight.
For what it’s worth I also bought a Wii the day it was released (11/19/06), 2 days after the PS3 launch). Granted it’s a less sophisticated machine but that continues to work flawlessly nearly 3 years later…
Since my last 2 posts I have been successfully playing PS2 games on my PS3, yet it still has the same behavior with PS3 discs… occasionally shows in the XMB, begins to load, then gives me a 80010514 error. And to think I thought my lens was buggered up so I spent the money to order a $60 replacement to fix myself versus $150 to have it serviced by Sony. I am so angry right now!

I had been playing COD4 on my 60GB UK PS3 (never ever had any problems with it before) and afterwards I noticed there was a V3.01 update available.
After the install, I suddenly noticed that the disc icon for COD4 was missing from the menu!
I have tried some problem solving and noted the following…
PS3 will –
– detect and play CD’s, DVD’s, PS2 games.
– only sometimes allows USB to be used to copy and back-up saves
PS3 WILL NOT –
– recognise and play BluRay films
– recognise and play PS3 games
I have tried restore to factory default settings but it did not help.
Reboot and unplugged all cables but nothing helped.
Just leaving a note to say the firmware seized up my 60GB PS3(purchased 01/08) also. Can’t play BD, DVD, CD’s, or games but I do have a great big media server sitting next to my TV.
Called Sony and they told me to give $149.
Not a happy camper.

Hi, i just updated to 3.01 and one of the MAIN FEATURES I USED IS NOW BROKEN. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO PLAY MUSIC ANYMORE WHILE SEEING PHOTOS ON THE XMB. And do not tell it should be done on the photo gallery, because the photo gallery does not support music playlists, just a single music for slide show.
I used to show all my digital picutres(taken on a Sony DSC-H20 by the way) on the PS3 while playing music, and now no more. PLEASE FIX THIS, it was fully working until 3.00/3.01.
