Demon’s Souls Now Available for PS3

The Kingdom of Boletaria is now open to you, brave adventurers/PlayStation Blog readers: Demon’s Souls for PlayStation 3 is now available in retailers across North America.

For months leading up to its release, we’ve emphasized the game’s difficulty level, striving in every instance not to misrepresent the game and to ensure that curious gamers are not caught off guard by the challenges that await them. That said, we don’t want anyone to steer clear of the game because of what they’ve heard. If that is not the perfect segue into some starting tips for new heroes, then I don’t know what is.

Demon's Souls burn baby burn

Demon’s General Warning: Fire can be hazardous to your health

*Mild Spoiler Alert*

Your first task in Demon’s Souls, before even jumping into the game world, is to create your character. Demon’s Souls offers 10 different player classes, each with different starting stats and equipment.

Unlike many RPGs, Demon’s Souls does not punish players for choosing something out of line with their play style. Regardless of which class you pick, you’ll be able to eventually do anything another class is more capable of at the start; all it takes is a little extra work. Therefore, if you want to be a spellcaster, archer, or melee fighter, it will make more sense to choose an appropriate class to start, but just because you do so doesn’t mean you won’t be dabbling in other classes’ strengths later on, and you probably won’t be anywhere near as tempted as in other RPGs to keep creating new characters and playing the first bit over and over again in order to make that perfect build. That simply isn’t accomplished at the beginning; it’s done over the course of your epic adventure (as it should be).

I (and most Demon’s Souls players, it seems) would recommend the Royalty class to most newcomers. The Royalty class begins with a Soul Level of 1, which means that the Soul Point requirement for advancing the first few levels is the least, allowing players the most early stat customization options. Moreover, the class begins with a catalyst (wand) and the Soul Arrow spell memorized, making them a long-range spell casting force to be reckoned with. On top of all this, they start with the Fragrant Ring equipped, an item that offers slow but steady Magic Point regeneration. For more class tips, and other helpful info, consult our newly launched wiki.

This description may make the Royalty class sound like a no-brainer (and I’m sure some Demon’s Souls players would argue that is the case), but the beauty of the game is that the class decision at the beginning ultimately makes little difference to the vast majority of the game experience (contrary to most games). Not to suggest that customization doesn’t matter; in fact, it matters a great deal!

Rather, in Demon’s Souls, it is the choices you make on how to advance and evolve your character that are key, delivering a MUCH more satisfying and rewarding role-playing experience than many other entries in the genre. Also, the Royalty class will initially suffer in up-close combat, something to consider if that’s your style (and consideration of what exactly your preferred play style in such a game actually is is crucial to your enjoyment of the game… again, something that other RPGs don’t really take into consideration).

Demon's Souls lookout

My, how many eyes you have…

Don’t worry when you die almost immediately at the end of the tutorial; death is unavoidable by design. You’ll be revived in the Nexus by the Maiden in Black, who will later on be your means for advancing/leveling your character. The first and only region you’ll initially have access to is the Boletarian Palace (1-1). Don’t be alarmed when you begin this area and find a number of bloodstains (indications of other players’ deaths, if you’re connected to PlayStation Network). The game takes a little getting used to, hence some folks meeting early (and repeated, at times) deaths.

Here are a few important tips:

    1. Watch your stamina carefully – Stamina is crucial to melee fighting in Demon’s Souls. There have been very well-received RPGs in gaming history that have allowed players to simply hack away at the attack button, but this is NOT the case in Demon’s Souls. You will only be able to string/combo attack as long as you have stamina (the green bar) left, and when it is depleted, you’ll just stand there and be open to attack unless you move around intelligently and manage your stamina well. Power swings take more stamina (duh), and absorbing a power hit will deplete you as much if not more (and if you’re already low on stamina, will stun you and open you up to attacks).

    2. Don’t try to get away with more than makes logical sense – That is to say, if you think it would be ill-advised to take on 4-5 foes at once in real life, don’t put yourself in that situation in Demon’s Souls. Rushing ahead foolishly will get a lot of enemy attention. Sound judgment would suggest progressing with a more measured pace, only antagonizing a manageable number of enemies and making your life easier.

    3. Shield if you got’em – If you are a melee fighter, you’d be remiss not to use your shield at every possible opportunity. With most shields, you’ll still take a bit of damage when you absorb a blow using a shield (although the amount varies with shield quality, and some shields negate all damage), but it will be far less than having no shield at all (even faced with fire/magic attacks, a shield can help reduce damage taken).

    4. Pay CLOSE attention to your surroundings (and if you’re playing online, the hints left by others) – The game will rarely warn you if you’re about to make a mistake or head in a path not quite appropriate for your character. It will instead let you make the mistake, die, and hopefully learn from it. That said, the messaging system and bloodstain system built into the game give players connected to PSN an ample supply of hints and warnings for avoiding ambushes, traps, and dangerous foes (for more info, watch our second walkthrough video, which touches on the online features extensively.

Once you get the hang of 1-1 and defeat the area’s boss, Demon’s Souls opens up to you—literally. You’ll be able to access the initial area of all of the five other archstones AND you’ll receive the Blue eye stone, which lets you drop Soul Signs on the ground and, when you’re dead/in soul form, you can be summoned by living players into their games to assist them in their quest.

Demon's Souls strat guide

You could have helpful information like this if you pick up the Deluxe Edition, which is selling rather briskly, and snag yourself the strategy guide, which is not sold separately…

I’ll suggest beginners proceed to 1-2 or 2-1 after completing 1-1, or, at the very least, leave the fifth archstone for a little later. It’s a bit more challenging (relatively speaking) and will be more enjoyable a little later on.

Demon’s Souls is a very hard game to sum up or describe in a short amount of space, as evidenced by this rather lengthy blog entry. As deep and nuanced as the game is, as much as there is to get out of it, players will find the actual game mechanics incredibly simple and intuitive. It’s breaking out of the run-and-gun (or hack-and-slash, rather) mentality of other games that can be a challenge. Once you manage to, though, expect one of the most rewarding, satisfying, time-sucking roleplaying experiences you’ve ever had, complete with beautiful visuals, haunting music, and some of the most immersive stages ever.

We’re really excited to join you in the Kingdom of Boletaria and perhaps fight alongside you as you confront a towering boss (or help you fend off another invading player from your world), but don’t only take our word for it; plenty of critics agree:

9/10, Editor’s Choice Award — “Brutally challenging and utterly engrossing, this innovative role-playing game is one of the year’s best.” — GameSpot

95 — “Gorgeous, thoughtful, and complete unto itself, it’s the second-best title I’ve played this year. Maybe even better.” — Play Magazine

5/5 — “Demon’s Souls is the best game I’ve played all year.” — RPGamer

95 — “Without question, Demon’s Souls is one of 2009’s finest titles, and an amazing, challenging journey without equal.” — GameCritics

94 — “This is a truly exceptional RPG experience that hasn’t been offered by any other game in its genre.” — GameZone

  • i wish i coulda got the CE, w/o the strat guide there is no point for me to re-buy this game :(

    • OverlordSpike,

As of a couple hours ago (or, when last I checked), some major online retailers were still offering the Deluxe Edition (and even still listed the pre-order bonus items as included). I understand if perhaps you are unable to order from an online retailer for one reason or another, but there are still options left if that is an absolute condition for you!

  • Im pissed ’cause I went to get it and EB said it wasnt even out yet. I’ve been waiting for this game for months!

  • Okay I’m 3 hours in and decided to take a break to say, this game is a piece of cake. I died once in the first level and that boss was a push over. Games tons of fun though and I can’t wait to try the online functionality.

  • I’ve been playing all afternoon and I already got a trophy. Great game, buy it.

  • its coming out 2morrow for us here in bc..i was so excited 2day too that i was gonna play it!!! i guess i have 2 wait =p

  • I’m thinking of starting as the Temple Knight for my first play-through.

  • When I saw the videos for this game I just wrote it off as another crappy RPG game, with a stupid 10 hour linear story line. But after reading this blog, and looking at some reviews. I know I was completely wrong. I can’t wait to buy this game. From what I’ve seen and read, this game looks like something that will actually challenge a hard core gamer. I’ll be a soldier when I buy it.

  • I also had a semi bad experience with gamestop. They didn’t give me my pre order goodies but just as I got in the car I remembered the video of Aram sniffing the game and recalled the Artbook and soundtrack. I went back in and asked him about it and he was confused at first but after looking through some cabinets found it. No harm no foul or whatever that saying is. It’s all good cause I got my Demon’s Souls Deluxe Edition and all my goodies at the end of the day.

    • Jon_Mclane,

Glad you had a happy ending, Jon.

It\’s always a good idea to mention the bonus items often, at the time of your pre-order, upon your pick-up, and any time in-between. Again, with as many great games coming out this holiday season, and many of them also offering bonus items, it can\’t hurt to be extra careful and double-check that your pre-order bonuses are set aside for your reservation!

  • Thanks for the tips. The game is on its way to my house as we speak. I’ll probaly take your advice and start out with the Royalty class, but I’m definitely going to invest in becoming a close range fighter as well later in the game.

  • I’m gonna wait and hopefully play a demo of it before purchase. I like hard games, but I don’t like controller smashing hard games (broken too many controllers in my days). :P

  • So after reading that blog post thoroughly from work I realized the world I lost my 14k of souls in was also the hardest. To my underdstanding at least. So when I go home I’m going to enter one of the other archstones n I’m assuming it will be more balanced. I’ve now psyched up myself again to be playing this game when I get off work tonight. I’m thinking of starting another game with a new class since I lost all those souls…

  • Can I have a copy? :D?

I really want to add a RPG to my PS3 collection , but so many great games are releasing this month…so little money. D:

  • I’m so excited for this game. I nearly imported this back in the spring until I heard Atlus picked it up for North American release.
Sadly, my local EB Games won’t have it til tomorrow (I hope). I’ve got it paid off in full! I want to play it NOW!!

And Aram: Thanks for the amazing customer/fan support you’ve been giving here, and on the Atlus site. And not just for Demon’s Souls, but all the Atlus brands as well! And I commend you for being upfront and honest about the game not being for everyone! Not many PR reps would do that in the interest of costing sales.
All you Atlus people deserve a round of applause! :D

  • i’ve played and completed the AS version of this game. I must say it’s so addictive that you cannot leave it alone for a few hours. TRUE CLASSIC + NEW EXPERIENCE. True hardcore RPG that you could not find anywhere other than the PS3.IT’S A MUST-HAVE, guys.
Still lookin foward to import the deluxe ver. coz i dont live in USA.
But you know what alot of people want after this…WE WANT MORE :) PLS GIVE US A SEQUEL.

btw, i wonder if anything WILL ever happen to the sixth stone (the one with giant race). I mean: is there any DLC for this game, EVER???

  • theres so many classes, i can’t decide which one to choose from when i play it 2morrow =p

  • you know, my nephew watched me playing this game all the time… and because i played it again and again, died again and again from places to places that he knew almost every detail of this game. When it came to making sth in his summer class, he chose to make a monopoly board with demon’s souls theme ^____^. The only thing he doesnt like about this game is i played it alot that he didnt have time to play his game.

  • Pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition months ago, and I’m loving this game already!

  • Aram Jabbari replied on October 6, 2009 at 2:33 pm
    RyuPower,

There will be no demo for Demon’s Souls. Anyone on the fence and unlikely to choose a side without a demo is advised to rent or try the game at a friend’s house.

We were open and honest about Demon’s Souls being a challenging game because we wanted people to know exactly what they were spending their money on: a deep, rewarding, brutally satisfying action RPG that might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Best to be sure before spending your hard-earned money.

Thanks for your interest and support

Finally a developer who is loyal to a specific fan, and not one trying to make a game for everybody. I will be purchasing this game! I appreciate the honesty. It shows that there are still a few artists left in this industry.

  • Woo Aram

Already started it, being a thief! Heard it’s the hardest class, but I’ve stayed alive so far (other than the good ole tutorial).

    Such a fun game.

  • this game getting alot of good reviews so i might pick this up.

idk tho im not really good at RPG

  • Im gonna b a templar! super melee stuff yo.

  • I’d have to be a priest. I’m all about support classes.

  • I found this game at gamestop!!! They only received one copy of it too, which is weird.

    This game is B-R-U-T-A-L.

  • Realllllly want to pick this up now, but if I do, my school work is going to go down the toilet.

Asking for it for Xmas….but I want to play it now. :(

  • I don’t have a credit card so I purchased Gran Turismo at Best buy via the Playstation Network Game Card. Now Sony tells me I don’t get the PSN gift (2009 Nissan GT-R Spec V) b/c I used a voucher to download the game. WTF?!?! Way to screw your loyal customers Sony! That is the last PSN game I ever buy. The only reason I bought the PSN version was for that car. Hope the PSPGo is a complete failure b/c I’ll be playing only UMDs on my PSP-3000 from here on out.

  • Received my copy earlier today from amazon and the guide in the deluxe edition is amazing. The slip box it comes in is very solid. The bonus artbook and soundtrack are great too. This is how a collector’s/deluxe/limited edition should be done. Totally worth the extra $10 and the game’s fantastic. Keep it up Atlus!

  • how come this game doesnt show up in whats new eventhough its my most recently played game? is there gonna be a update about this?

  • Hey Aram, as I await Amazon to deliver my Delux Version, I shall tell you what class I plan on playing as! (oh wait..playing? More like DIEING)

Going to be Knight class, I love my armored classes with sword & shields!

  • Thank you Atlus for getting me into a whole GENRE of games that I’ve never had any interest in before! (i.e. RPGs)

Also, I’ve thought a lot about what class to play as when my copy arrives tomorrow, but there’s SOOOO many to choose from, its INSANE! I’m leaning towards Wanderer because it sounds closest to my personality (also cuz I like Shadow of the Colossus a LOT :P), but I have no idea what its strengths/weaknesses are. If I don’t like the stats, I’ll probably choose barbarian or hunter just because they sound cool. Perhaps I should take a peek at the Demon’s Souls wiki… :P

Thanks again Atlus, and special thanks to Aram – you are the most awesomest PR dude EVER!!

  • Lucked out at EB games this afternoon… was able to pick up my DE and preorder bonus. Awesome game!!! Great job Atlus!!!

  • Just got off of a 4 hour session. Thanks Atlus for bringing over another great game! We love what you do!

  • I have been amped up for this game since it was announced for NA. I rushed over to the nearest best buys, since I had only $30 and a $40 best buy gift card, and what do you know; BEST FREAKIN’ BUY DOESN’T HAVE IT!!! I checked three different BestBuys and found out that none of them have any idea of Demon’s Souls coming out their. My question is WHY DOESN’T BEST BUY CARRY IT! It’s not on their site either. Quote from Siliconera “Atlus is shipping a ‘metric poop-ton’ (their words, not ours) of Demon’s Souls in preparation for the October 6 release date.” FAIL!!!

  • This is an amazing game. I pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition and picked it up today. It is extremely satisfying and very rewarding.

I made my character a Knight, and so far, so good :)

  • This thing is hard as hell, but fun, to bad i gotta do homework or else id be playing through the night.

  • I am definatley going to be a guy with really big armor and a huge sword and shield, and i think i’d want to perform miracles rather than spells, they seem more useful.

  • Woot! Love the game, may I ask if we will see any DLC in the coming months this game would be perfect for it. Also one of you guys need to sing to me still its my B-day. (You promised)

  • Hey Aram, does this game have a blood filter? Could you pleeeeease answer? That’s the only thing separating me from buying Demon’s Soul.

If I get the game (hopefully you answer), I’ll start off with the thief.

  • it’s great game for those who have the imported version, just a question can US players play with other players on the Asian server in the future; like 5 months after the game release in US.

  • I can’t believe how much I love this game! O_O I died about 14 times from traps, falls and dragon breath but I just kept going when I would normally just quit. Some people that were reviewing the game couldn’t get pass the first boss and that kind of worried me but I got pass it on the first try thanks to a message left behind. Anyone that’s on the fence about this game go get it! Yes it’s hard but not in an unfair way there’s just strategy behind everything.

Thanks for suggesting the Royal class btw, if I didn’t have that ranged spell I would have been screwed in a few spots.

  • After spending a good couple of hours with the game, I gotta say that it’s great! The combat is excellent.

Now if ATLUS would only release more of their PSP games on the PSN so I can play them on my Go, life would be sweet (coughcrimsongemsagacough)…

  • @187: I believe I saw an option to turn off the blood, so it’s a yes…

  • Game looks amazing, my most hyped game. Anticapating it somewhere in top 5 favorite games this gen.
To bad im not getting it til my bday

  • I bought Demon’s Souls at Gamestop earlier today, he asked me what game I was getting and I said the deluxe edition of Demon’s Souls and he said for what system lol I just started laughing It’s funny when I worked at gamestop I knew what games belonged to what system now a days the employees are a joke they know nothing about these games!

  • I will take your advice and be a royal

  • Thanks Aram and Atlus! It is great how you have replied to the numerous comments regarding the launch of Demon’s Souls! I have played for a few more hours since my last post and I must say I am completely hooked! Great game, great challenge, great fun! Once again thanks for getting this spectacular game to the U.S. I’m playing as knight, but looking in to playing as a royal.

  • Soldier class. All the way. I’m going to man up and fight sword to bone.

  • Atlus your my hero. Plain and simple. I must say I’m a little both amused, and taken back by some of the comments. Amused that people want a “fix” for the difficulty, when this game is meant to be actually challenging, it’s not broken.

While I’m saddened by the comments of people angry at you because they did not get their preorder bonuses, when this is more likely Gamestop’s fault. While I shop their and love it, they don’t always do the best at giving the preorder bonuses to whom actually deserve them.

Anyways thanks for bringing this State side, and thanks for the very awesome artbook.

  • when i first heard about this game back when it was released in Japan i thought this looks like an okay game… i really didn’t think i would buy it at all however after time went by i kept hearing small praises about this game every so often and i was more and more curious about what was the big deal and then i heard some more about it at E3 and was sorta intrigued but still not sold but about a few weeks ago after reading a game review online and watching the gameplay i decided that this is definitely a game that i am looking forward to purchasing and when i first heard it was produced by atlus i was confused because i would only associate them with the SMT and disgaea series but demon’s souls was a completely different game even though it was still a hardcore RPG it was more western oriented but i’m happy with the way the game looks and am hoping to get my hands on it this weekend and start dying A LOT… i’m thinking of starting out as either a theif or a magician i’m avoiding magician just because looking at the gameplay there seem to be a lot of places where the character is ambushed and a magician would probably get owned very quickly so yeah i might just pick theif because the sneaky aspect fits my style of play…

  • and what about Australia?
yes, ps3s do exist outside america just encase you dident notice.

  • I’m considering starting as royalty, but my copy won’t be here for a couple of days so I have more time to think it over. Can’t wait to play!
