COMING SOON: NETFLIX MEMBERS CAN INSTANTLY WATCH MOVIES AND TV EPISODES STREAMED TO TVs VIA THE PLAYSTATION®3 COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM

With Movies Streamed Instantly from Netflix, Blu-ray/DVD Playback and Downloadable Videos via the PlayStation®Network, the PlayStation 3 System Offers The Industry’s Most Comprehensive Options for Watching Movies and TV Shows

FOSTER CITY and LOS GATOS, Calif., October 26, 2009 – Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) and Netflix, Inc. [Nasdaq: NFLX] today announced that they are joining forces to make thousands of movies and TV episodes from Netflix available to be streamed instantly to TVs via the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system. Netflix expects to begin streaming via the PS3 system next month at no additional cost to Netflix members in the United States who have a PS3 system.

Today’s announcement pairs two of the most popular and fastest growing home entertainment brands in the U.S. The PS3 system’s installed base has reached close to 9 million units in the United States, and Netflix recently reported 11.1 million U.S. subscribers as of September 30.

The partnership further solidifies the PS3 system as the most complete home entertainment hub on the market today, enabling consumers to play high-definition games, watch Blu-ray movies, listen to music, view photos, browse the Internet, and download content from PlayStation®Network − from exclusive games to blockbuster movies and popular TV shows. PS3 system owners will soon enjoy an unparalleled experience watching their favorite movies and TV shows streamed instantly from Netflix, downloading from the PlayStation Network or watching Blu-ray/DVD media. The Netflix offering expands on the entertainment experience delivered to PS3 system owners via PlayStation Network.

For only $8.99 a month, Netflix members can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streamed to their TVs and computers via Netflix ready devices such as the PS3 system and can receive unlimited DVDs delivered quickly to their homes.

“The PlayStation 3 system has always been about more than just gaming, and it will soon be the only platform in the industry to offer consumers such a variety of convenient options for enjoying movies and TV shows,” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. “Whether you want to watch content on Blu-ray disc and DVD, download it from the PlayStation Network’s video delivery service, or stream videos instantly from Netflix, the PS3 system is the only solution that offers it all.”

“As instantly watching movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix becomes an increasingly popular way to enjoy the Netflix service, our goal is to rapidly expand the devices that stream to our members,” said Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings. “As a leading game console and Blu-ray disc player, bringing Netflix to the PS3 system is a real win for both Netflix members and PS3 system owners.”

Initially, watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members. The free instant streaming disc leverages Blu-ray’s BD-Live™ technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system, which must be online via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Netflix members simply slide the disc into their PS3 systems to reveal movies and TV episodes that can be watched instantly. These titles are conveniently organized into a variety of categories based on members’ personal preferences, popular genres, new arrivals and members’ individual instant Queues. Members can use the Netflix Web site or navigate directly on their PS3 systems to add movies and TV shows to their Queues. With the PS3 system’s Wireless Controller, members can choose a movie to watch from their instant Queues or just play directly from any of the lists. They also have the ability to read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream via the Wireless Controller.

Netflix members and PS3 system owners can now reserve a free instant streaming disc for PS3 systems by going to www.netflix.com/ps3. Upon availability, the instant streaming disc will be delivered for free by first-class mail, generally one business day after members request it.

  • Awesome, but will netflix work in puerto rico thats the answer we people in puerto rico want to know since we are a united states territory

  • Oh, one more thing (even though everyone’s probably stopped reading this post by now)…

I’m not sure if it would work, but if this were possible on the PSP it seems to me that Sony and Netflix would have some kind of monster!

  • @501…

Why don’t you go to Netflix’s site and find out…

Quote: You may not view a movie through the instant watching functionality anywhere other than within the 50 United States and the District of Columbia. Due to licensing restrictions, you may not instantly watch movies outside of this area, including the U.S. territories, and Netflix may use technologies to verify your compliance.

  • So, can we get some sort of update as to when we finally get some sort of video service in Canada on the PS3? One would think the Canadian PlayStation division would be able to negotiate this.

  • And for the record we don’t need NETFLIX sony playstation 3 is better off with out netflix stop wasting are time with petty streamed NETFLIX movies we don’t need them ok get it got it good…

  • For those asking “Why do I need a disc”? Shush and do your research.

    http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/26/netflix-is-coming-to-the-ps3/

Apparently, PS3 cannot have it in the XMB due to a possible exclusivity clause. Another thing is that I imagine this kind of integration into the XMB will be development intensive and I imagine they want to get this out sooner than later!

Quit whining. It will happen, just not at launch.

  • I don’t understand how people think this isn’t any better than the current video service. The video service charges PER MOVIE or TV SHOW. Netflix is offering unlimited streaming AND 1 disc out at a time (also unlimited and I can get 2 movies, sometimes even 3, per week) for $8.99 PER MONTH.

How the hell could the video service compare to that? I watch movies more than I watch television, so it’s well worth it.

Bring it on; I’m ready for this!

  • Hey, I should get something for 500th comment… :)

  • sony is the best.just need facebook/bebo/myspace/mail support/sky tv player. job done

  • Wow this junk what about some new avatars how about some gta4 DLC come on sony.

  • Attention all of you people in other countries! I found the following article stating something of Netflix’s intentions outside of the U.S.:

    videobusiness.com/article/CA6703596

“Additionally, Netflix plans to debut its videostreaming service to customers outside of the U.S. during the second half of 2010, though it has no plans to ship DVDs within the countries, which the company also didn’t disclose.”

I seriously doubt that integration in the XMB would require more effort than implementing this as a BD-J app. I think it’s more probably that an application running in that context doesn’t cross the wording of their agreement with MS, inasmuch as it’s not running as a native Playstation application. (I wonder if this wouldn’t run on any other full-spec Blu-ray player with a network connection? Makes me wish I had one to test it on :)).

  • I wish i was american sometimes. does this mean canadians will get the regular video store anytime soon then?

  • C’mon! I just posted hope that you’ll get streaming (in several months, but still)–let’s not hear any complaints about not having the disc rental service, particularly since it doesn’t have anything to do with the Playstation.

  • lol netflix is good but ps3 should let us watch movies wit are friends any body else agree good job sony

  • The Xbox “Netflix Movie Party” feature only works with friends whose consoles are also registered with Netflix as streaming players and doesn’t work with Starz Play titles. (Starz Play is a product of the Starz premium cable network which provides a subset of available streaming titles–about 1000 out of the current 18600–which include most of the freshest popular theatrical release content. The encodings aren’t as crisp as the best of the rest and never include any 720p24 stuff).

It seems possible that they’ll include that in the XMB-integrated feature which will debut “late next year”, maybe as a feature of Home.

  • SONY!!!! you REALLY need to get your act together, you keep making these announcements as if your sooooooooooooooooooo proud of yourselves, when these announcements mean NOTHING to the rest of the world outside the US and just serves to piss off your fans around the world including good ol Canadians such as myself, STOP focusing on just the US, you say the PS3 is the ultimate media machine? ya MAYBE if you live in the STATES! to the rest of the world its just another video game console, Microsoft is doing a MUCH better job of pleasing fans around the world, i just might have to trade in my PS3 for a 360.

Best regards a once most loyal Playstation supporter.

  • WOW VIKINGBERSERKR WELL PUT I WISH I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT TO SAY SHAPE UP SONY AND NETFLIX OR YOUR GOING TO LOSE ALOT OF PS3 FANS, SHAPE UP…

  • OUTSIDE OF THE UNITED STATES YOU ARE GOING TO LOSE ALOT OF PS3 FANS SHAPE UP SONY AND NETFLIX AND GIVE US NETFLIX STREAMING AND FOR CANADIANS SONY PLAYSTATION 3 VIDEO STORE AND NETFLIX STREAMING AND BY THE WAY I LIVE IN PUERTO RICO AND THE ONLY CONSERN IS NETFLIX STREAMING WE ALL READY HAVE THE SONY PLAYSTATION 3 VIDEO STORE

  • So let me see if i got this right…It’s 8.99 a month PLUS a netflix subscription fee?

  • at 520

i think the 8.99 is the only fee you have to pay.

to those that think netflix wont be any good to the ps3, think again. i mean, you might have to start off with a disk but im sure sony will eventually integrate it to the xmb. plus with the addition of netflix and price drop for the new ps3 models, sony has microsoft in the hole. i have a 360 but i have noticed that even paying for xbox live that sony service is still better and the service they provide is free (excluding repairs probably). all sony needs now is a complete ps2 emulator for the new models, which would be really cool since the new models dont consume as much power.

  • So if I already pay 13.99 a month for a Netflix account then I have to add 8.99 a month to that to have Netflix on my PS3?

  • (For only $8.99 a month, Netflix members can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streamed to their TVs and computers and can receive unlimited DVDs delivered quickly to their homes.) $8.99 a month sounds a lot better than the price per tv show or movie on psn. hell, just to catch up on a few shows through psn would be over $10.00 in a day

  • I’m one of those who hold the opinion that this is an end-run around any console exclusivity agreement Netflix has with MS. This BD-J implementation can probably be run on any BD Live 2.0 player and is not embedded and console-specific; the PS3 just happens to be one of a number of BD Live 2.0-compliant Blu-ray players 8^). Clever.

Netflix has talked about a Wii version of their streaming player, but I’m betting that it will have to wait for MS’ console exclusivity agreement to expire (presumably “late next year”, when Netflix claims that the PS3 embedded player will appear). There’s no facility with which they can do this on a DVD.

  • 522 you dont have to add the $8.99 plan. I think the $8.99 plan is the lowest you can go to get streaming on your ps3

  • it says that members can now request the cd at netflix.com/ps3. but when i went to that website it says enter ur email so we can let u know when netflix becomes available for the ps3. so what is it, has anyone gotten a cd?

  • It’s $8.99/month for the 1 disc out-at-a-time plan ($10.99/month if you want to rent Blu-ray discs). There are other plans: $13.99/month for 2 discs, $16.99/month for 3 discs and $23.99/month for 4 discs; if you want Blu-ray, they’re respectively $16.99/month, $20.99/month, and $28.99/month. (There used to be 6- and 8-disc out-at-a-time plans, but they don’t offer them now. Perhaps they weren’t popular). Unlimited streaming is an ancillary feature of their unlimited disc rental plans–you don’t pay extra for it.

To use Netflix, you go to their website and add titles to rent to your queue. You have both Disc and Instant queues, whose order you can arrange. They’ll try to send the discs to you in queue order and the Instant titles will appear in the queue view of your stream player in that order (important since your queue can get very long). The Xbox player (and, supposedly the new BD Live player) has a limited ability to browse their library–you browse according to 15 categories and get to see the 100 most popular of each (which would amount to 1500 titles out of 18,600). You can play items immediately from the category views, or place them at the end of your Instant Q.

  • Why the freakin disc that completely defeats the whole pupose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • **crying** stop being like 360 **crying** i bet their the same people crying for cross game chat

  • This is exactly the type of solution I’ve been asking for for the last 6 months. Sure it’s not as nice as an installable program that sits on the XMB, but some Netflix is better than no Netflix at all, don’t you agree?

The reason we can’t have it on XMB is because M$ likes to pay lots of money for exclusive rights. While it’s being advertised for PS3, the disk will work on any BD-live 2.0 bluray player. However, most BD-L players already have Netflix online support built in, so this merely makes the PS3 comparable to all the other bluray players out there that already support Netflix.

  • And all you Canadians, WHY ARE YOU ANGRY AT SONY?! Sony has absolutely no control over which countries Netflix operates its services. Jesus, you people sound as retarded as someone from the USA angry at sony because the BBC iPlayer doesn’t work in America.

  • Seriously, what’s the point in this? My dad has a Netflix account, but only to rent DVDs.

What saddens me that game consoles nowadays rely on multimedia gimmicks to get them to sell. Anyone Remember the SNES and SEGA Genesis? Both were great consoles that don’t need the ability to play music, movies, etc. to be fantastic.

I’m probably going to get a bunch of Sony fanboys all over me for this, but remember when game consoles used to be about games? *Sigh*…

  • SNES and Genesis didn’t have multimedia support because they couldn’t (Genesis had a CD add-on which could play audio CDs as well as games on CD). If they’d had the technology, I bet that they would have done media.

Multimedia capability doesn’t make consoles any less about gaming; they’re just also about a few other things, giving them more value.

  • all of u retard that think u have to put disc in all time you wrong

YOU PUT IN DISC FIRST THEN YOU GET A NETFLIX APP AND NEVER NEED DISC AGAIN

  • Yes, I no longer have to share my husband’s Xbox 360. I can just use my PS3 Slim for EVERYTHING!!! =)

  • Yes, I no longer have to worry about sharing my husband’s Xbox 360. I can just use my PS3 Slim for EVERYTHING!!! =)

  • this is the end of MS, first was the PS3 price drop now this. I love it keep it up Sony, and you will definitely be the winner this generation just like the last. You guys rock can’t wait for the GOW collection

  • MS has apparently issued a non-response:

    xboxlive.ign.com/articles/103/1038969p1

I doubt this will have any large effect on MS’ business; Netflix streaming was just a minor line-item in their battle with Sony on capabilities. I can’t believe that many (if any) people were buying Xboxes or subscribing to Xbox Live Gold just to get this–it’d be far cheaper just to buy a $100 Roku box. It might have swayed a few people who didn’t want to own both an Xbox and PS3, and were going back and forth about which one to get.

  • Sorry–apparently that link to MS’ response needs the “.html” on the end (just trying to fool the board software, which seems to hold responses containing URLs to await moderation):

    xboxlive.ign.com/articles/103/1038969p1.html

  • I was just at my local Best Buy to buy a Tivo that was on sale because I wanted a DVR that had netflix streaming. It was at of stock and coming in tomorrow. I just saw that article about Netflix streaming on Ps3 next month. Now I will stick to my cable companies inferior DVR and get a slim 250gb Ps3 next week.

  • @CrystalX3D

Its not just the Net flix thing, sure they may have no control over that but they DO have control over There CURRENT movie and TV service which we Canadians and other countries have yet to see, oh and for the record, 360 has Net flix, and in CANADA!:P so its not a Net flix thing, its a Sony thing.

  • I remember when xbox said that they got nexflic on their system, but it looks like we got it now. GO PS3 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Well it’s about time! Now if Sony would just include a HDMI cable with there system. What else could xbox do that ps3 can’t? I know X box has compontant cable but it is still HIGH DEF. out of the box. They should also learn that Infinity Ward/Call of Duty rules the game world by far. Why did we not get a Modern Warfare 2 Edition? Hmmmmm Sony take note.

  • icek9thor: After that last $100 price drop, Xbox Elite ships with only a composite cable as well. Sorry.

  • nice.cant wait to know exactly how it will be done..

  • I dunno if this has been asked already but what’s the chances of this being remote play compatible? I’m assuming not likely and what’s the chances us psp users will get something like this in the (near) future?

  • I don’t think its for Canadians and neither is the psn video store, but at least we have itunes.

  • thats awesome im totally gonna see if i can get that.

  • Why do people want Cross Game Voice chat?? Do you need to talk to your “boyfriends” 24/7 and what good is a Cross Game chat when in a multiplayer game like SOCOM, Warhawk, COD ..etc????
