COMING SOON: NETFLIX MEMBERS CAN INSTANTLY WATCH MOVIES AND TV EPISODES STREAMED TO TVs VIA THE PLAYSTATION®3 COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM

With Movies Streamed Instantly from Netflix, Blu-ray/DVD Playback and Downloadable Videos via the PlayStation®Network, the PlayStation 3 System Offers The Industry’s Most Comprehensive Options for Watching Movies and TV Shows

FOSTER CITY and LOS GATOS, Calif., October 26, 2009 – Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) and Netflix, Inc. [Nasdaq: NFLX] today announced that they are joining forces to make thousands of movies and TV episodes from Netflix available to be streamed instantly to TVs via the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system. Netflix expects to begin streaming via the PS3 system next month at no additional cost to Netflix members in the United States who have a PS3 system.

Today’s announcement pairs two of the most popular and fastest growing home entertainment brands in the U.S. The PS3 system’s installed base has reached close to 9 million units in the United States, and Netflix recently reported 11.1 million U.S. subscribers as of September 30.

The partnership further solidifies the PS3 system as the most complete home entertainment hub on the market today, enabling consumers to play high-definition games, watch Blu-ray movies, listen to music, view photos, browse the Internet, and download content from PlayStation®Network − from exclusive games to blockbuster movies and popular TV shows. PS3 system owners will soon enjoy an unparalleled experience watching their favorite movies and TV shows streamed instantly from Netflix, downloading from the PlayStation Network or watching Blu-ray/DVD media. The Netflix offering expands on the entertainment experience delivered to PS3 system owners via PlayStation Network.

For only $8.99 a month, Netflix members can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streamed to their TVs and computers via Netflix ready devices such as the PS3 system and can receive unlimited DVDs delivered quickly to their homes.

“The PlayStation 3 system has always been about more than just gaming, and it will soon be the only platform in the industry to offer consumers such a variety of convenient options for enjoying movies and TV shows,” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. “Whether you want to watch content on Blu-ray disc and DVD, download it from the PlayStation Network’s video delivery service, or stream videos instantly from Netflix, the PS3 system is the only solution that offers it all.”

“As instantly watching movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix becomes an increasingly popular way to enjoy the Netflix service, our goal is to rapidly expand the devices that stream to our members,” said Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings. “As a leading game console and Blu-ray disc player, bringing Netflix to the PS3 system is a real win for both Netflix members and PS3 system owners.”

Initially, watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members. The free instant streaming disc leverages Blu-ray’s BD-Live™ technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system, which must be online via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Netflix members simply slide the disc into their PS3 systems to reveal movies and TV episodes that can be watched instantly. These titles are conveniently organized into a variety of categories based on members’ personal preferences, popular genres, new arrivals and members’ individual instant Queues. Members can use the Netflix Web site or navigate directly on their PS3 systems to add movies and TV shows to their Queues. With the PS3 system’s Wireless Controller, members can choose a movie to watch from their instant Queues or just play directly from any of the lists. They also have the ability to read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream via the Wireless Controller.

Netflix members and PS3 system owners can now reserve a free instant streaming disc for PS3 systems by going to www.netflix.com/ps3. Upon availability, the instant streaming disc will be delivered for free by first-class mail, generally one business day after members request it.

  • Sweet! Sony once again delivers on entertainment, always raising the bar and increasing the PS3’s capabilities.

  • so…how does it work? you NEED the disc?

  • Nice now i dont have to watch my NetFlix movies on my X360 now i can watch them on PS3=]. Sony you starting to look good. Only thing you need now is In Game Chat (So me and my friends can play diff games and still talk to each other)

  • WOW!!

  • You won’t need the disc everytime, that’s just for the start. The software will come later. Hence why they said next month.

And they linked you to the disc in case you wanted to get the jump on it.

  • i think it’s a good thing. On XBL u must have a gold accound, i will not play money for what’s writefuli ours. PSN it’s the best, you can play what ever u want for free. Netflix it’s cool.

  • Nice job there, Sony! You make us Netflix members happy! Another reason I don’t need an xbox.

  • SONY YOU’RE AMAZING!!!
    1. We need Netflix to go to EU as well, although Im not exactly sure it’ll work in EU, perhaps LoveFilm should do it in EU.
    2. Cross-Game Chattin!!!!
    3. Cross-Game Invites!!!!
    4. LESS LAG!!!!!
    5. TONNES MORE CONTENT!!!
    6. Improve PS Home (Weather, Seasons, Pets (WHICH YOU CAN ACTUALLY TAKE OUTTA UR APARTMENT), HALL OF FAME, MORE CLUBHOUSES, MORE SPACES PER WEEK! ETC. ETC.
    7. Keep da good games comin (not a complaint, compliment)
    8. We need MORE dynamic themes, especially more free ones.
Lots more but enough for now

  • that’s sweet i wish sony would make a deal with hulu to be able to stream shows with out having to pay for them :\

  • Thanks alot! I’ve been using a streaming program to log in to my account n show it up on ps3 till now.
Now i can get rid of the middle man!
    Man i love Netflix.
Bluray movies AND streaming for my ps3 :)

Thanks for doing us customers a huge favor!

  • OMG too early in the moring am I still dreaming? :)

  • i live in japan, can i stream netflix from my region? thx

  • it’s nice but sony anything mony

360 just buy online card & download & watch movies free

  • This is just another reason why people should pick up the PS3! I really had no interest with Netflix on the 360 simply because users would be paying twice just to use the service since it’s only available to Xbox Gold members. (Once for the Gold subscription then again just to use Netflix). Now that it’s on the PS3 Netflix seems like a good deal because it is free to access it. Sweet deal if you ask me!

  • Awesome stuff. I’m loving PS3.

  • What does this mean for the PSN movies?

  • I hope I will be able to use the service over here on a US military base in japan. I got handed the short stick when Sony decided to leave anyone out if their IP address isn’t in the states. I loved the service when I before I joined the Corps.

  • ” jayyy91 | October 25th, 2009 at 9:22 pm

This isn’t available to Canadians, right?”

I really Hope at least that PlayStation network Read this and working for solution
-_-I love you sony don’t make anyone say that you are in a disadvantage in Canada

  • Wow this is great news for the PS3 and from reading the comments it looks like Microsoft is probably going to lose a lot of subscribers due to this move from Sony & Netflix. Now Sony offers almost everything the 360 does at NO EXTRA COST!!! Which is just Awesome!!! When Cross game chat comes and all the other things which I know will eventually come since it seems Sony is taking baby steps but they’re still getting places so I’m a happy customer.

Now as for the confusion about the Blu-ray Disc being needed, it seems like it will be needed every time you want to access Netflix Instant Streaming but come on people STOP COMPLAINING. You could either get off your butt and put the disc in or go and pay $50 for Microsoft to do it for you. It may not be convinent but if I was saving $50 everytime I got off my butt I’d be moving a whole lot more often, plus remember the post says

“Initially, watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members”

    to be continued…

  • So what it sounds like is you will need the disc for now but they’re working on a solution to add it directly into the XMB.Now I would think that there are one of two reasons why this is happening…

1.Microsoft has some kind of exclusive deal, timed exclusive or something that prohibits any other hardware connected directly to a TV to do it directly from a Main User Interface.

    or

2.They want to get the service off the ground as soon as possible so they are providing those of you who want to use it right away a means of using the service while they work on adding it to the XMB.

Now to me #2 sounds the most logical since the use the word “Initially” which means in the beginning. So I assume it will be in the XMB eventually.

    to be continued…

  • Finally as for the future of the PS3’s PSN video store this is how I see each store being used. I see Netflix being used as a way to Rent & Stream HD & SD video’s instantly so they act basically as a rental service.

As for the PSN Video Store they become the place where if you want to buy the Movies and download them in SD or HD you can their & the whole rental model from the PSN store I can see disappearing since Netflix will be there for that, so each video store will have & serve a purpose.

Now I’m not a member of Netflix but I am glad I have the option now and maybe in the future I will be inclined to join, since the only bad things I have heard about Netflix is a lack of new content which I am sure they are working on but I have a feeling that all has to do with movie studios such as Sony,Warner Bros,Fox,Disney,Dream Works etc…etc…etc… wanting people to buy the video more than just rent them so they can make the extra money, so initially they really only allow consumers to buy them then later on Netflix and the cable companies get a hold of the content and are able to rent it out to their customers.

  • Ohh and Sony could you expand the amount of characters allowed to be posted on the blog so I don’t have to post 3 times to get the message through.

Again Great Job Sony Keep up the Good Work & continue to improve the PS3 & PSN service with firmware updates & features.

    Thanks Again
    Wolf26pack

  • Awesome Sony!!!!
    Can’t wait for it now.

  • God, I wish this was done sooner… THANK YOU!

  • Sooooo

Why do 360 owners pay $40 a year for LIVE??

  • SONY

COULD YOU PLEASE PARTNER WITH LOVEFILM IN THE UK!!!!

  • Unfortunately for us military service members serving overseas, on foreign soil, Netflix streaming service is blocked (yes, even with some freeware programs to divert your IP address).

Perhaps there can be some legal maneuvering by the movie industry to allow US copyright law to allow streaming video to US Citizens overseas?

I guess we can die for our country, but can’t watch her movies via streaming internet…

Fortunately, I can still rent Blu-Ray on base for $4 a copy, but I’d prefer to use Netflix for $9 a month. :)

I’ll be back in the US of A in Summer 2011… enjoy streaming Netflix til I get back,

    Doc

  • PS: I also have a XBOX360, and they will **Never** get one thin dime out of me for a “Gold” membership!

The only “gold” is the sucker’s money going into M$’s deep pockets.

    No way, Jose!

  • Terrific! I’ve been waiting for this for awhile. Good job!

  • I already stream Netflix via TiVo so this is just a minor nice-to-have for me, though I can see it is good for others. The ability to add movies to the queue from the couch rather than the computer is an advantage. What I’d really like to see is Hulu and mlb.tv.

  • This is great! I’m very happy about this. Good job Sony. Way to go =)

  • ha ha now microsoft can shut up about instant streamin no longr shall we wait an entire day for a movie to download!!! XD

  • sweetness, thankyou SCEA and Netflix

  • I will be signing up for Netflix as soon as it hits the PS3. I’ll finally be able to watch some of the movies and shows I’ve been wanting to see, but couldn’t find in any stores.

  • sounds good but why do you need a disk?

  • this is great news and I’m excited to finally get netflix on the PS3. and congratulation to Sony for being the 1st announce this news instead of it getting linked before the ink was dry on the deal. today is a great day for PS3 owners and netflix plus Sony.

    again congratulations.

  • Great news. Thank you to Netflix and Sony.

  • I’m canadian and I’m pissed of this. Will we have and error message like the videostore in Canada for this thing too? I have a US playstation 3 system and can’t access features that sony claims to be a selling point for the ps3 because I’m form Canada.

At least my 360 gives me some movie here in Canada so yes, for Canadians, the Xbox 360 gives us more features than the ps3 and it more deserves “it only dows anything”…

  • ^^^does :-) Silly Canucks

  • ^^^does* :-) Silly Canucks!

  • smart move sony, hope this feature will come to europe as well. cheers to sad xbox fanboys :-)

  • It really does everything.

  • Wtf, another thing us Canadians get screwed over with.

  • to the people complaining, saying that there is already a video service: you must not get it. 1) i’m not a big fan of the current video service due to high cost and long download times.

if you have a netflix account, however, you can watch movies for free right on you ps3 as long as you have them added to your instant queue on netflix.com.

360 fan or not, look into what the service is like on the xbox before giving negative praise. this is awesome news ;)

  • I guess there are two things I’m missing here: is the activation disc a 1-time thing or for now do I have to put that in every time?

The other thing is that if I’m a Netflix member already (which I am), do I have to pay an additional fee or this?

  • there was supposed to be a 2) ^^^ but oh well haha

  • Glad to hear this. I was afraid that we’d never see it come to the PS3, and I’d have to stick to using it on my Xbox 360.

(Of course, I’m sure at launch it won’t be up to par with the current Xbox 360 interface, but perhaps one day …)

  • Can anyone say – “M$ paid for a one year exclusiveness”.
